Oh well if you appreciate 'arty' movies then I definitely recommend watching 'J'ai tué ma mère' and 'Les amours imaginaires'. 'Laurence Anyways' wasn't all that for me (it just wasn't as relatable, mostly) but the other two are both fantastic movies. Creative plots, creative way of dealing with said plots, great acting and great soundtracks!
Never seen any of his films but know him from being in more of a 'film festival' circle... not really part of any of the circles you mentioned. All I know is that Laurence Anyways is supposedly a chore to sit through, albeit a very pretty and well-acted chore.
As it is for you! I really wouldn't have expected much of anyone on PC to know him (he seems to only be known in either French, gay or hipster circles, and I don't think much of PC fits into that). But yes he is wonderful, 'J'ai tué ma mère' is my favourite movie ever.
