That's wrong, I think; just because you are a supporter, it doesn't make you any different from a regular member and I really hope that you are teaching the new members that status shouldn't matter on a forum, and that moderators are there to be a guide.
Please stop pining for moderator status- the way you've handled situations in the past (throwing fits and leaving when someone disagrees or things don't go your way) prove to us that you're not ready for it. I'm a firm believer that people can change, but you're still stuck in the same mindset. You'll need to learn to mature a lot before you're going to be taken as a serious contender for modship.
It is nice that you are there to welcome new members, and as a member yourself, you are valued for that. The reason why you are a "magnet" to them, is simply because to talk to each an every one of them, so obviously you'll get more replies from a bunch than if you were to only welcome a few each month.
Another reason why they may go to you instead of a moderator is that you try and "butt in" or take over when others are welcoming members. You've done it twice to me when newbies have approached me and I've tried to make conversation with them. You've stalked my conversation and answered the questions "for me" and even tried to correct my answers. Excuse me, but I find that to be a little bit rude and invasive. Newbies don't know any better, but I do.
I realize you'll probably delete this comment, but mods will still be able to read it, but I'm screenshotting it for my own records. You wanted an answer to why? Well here it is. And if you delete it, it just proves again why you're not ready anytime soon to be a moderator.
