Thats... Interesting. Firered tiles do make it a Pokemon game, yet too Nintendo for me. I like the feel when it isn't Nintendo but is Pokemon. A good hack is original but also nostalgic to me, so... But yeah, your opinion, of course. (by the way, fake replacement tiles is perhaps the wrong way to say it. Custom tiles that some people like sounds better and less negative)
Well, how about other skils? Do you ever do anything just because you can? (like scripting)
Even if doing it just because you can could help you get better in that skill?
