You can indeed have a job as a Researcher and Seeker too. Tell your friend to get work as a researcher she has to do missions for the travelling Research aides, there's usually one in each Community Centre. I said the Skrelp at Clearwater Pond MIGHT not be catchable after the Beast Trio event, since I hadn't extensively tested it personally. =P As for the water changing again, it's working completely fine for me and nobody else has reported it, what did your friend do to make it happen? it sounds like a minor bug but still quite annoying, haha.
