I know exactly what you mean. That's one of the reasons Nidoking is one of my top 3 favorite Pokemon in RBY. He completely destroys other Pokemon. When I did the Ground mono on Blue, I just used a Nidoking and a Nidoqueen. I think Nidoking was in his 60s, and Nidoqueen only made it to like 40...
