I tend to agree with you there, I just take the view that I respect that everyone has the right to their beliefs but I can respect the person themselves if there is something to their reasoning.

Fair enough, I'm too lazy to change my vote right now though xD

What can I say? I really enjoy reading your posts, even when you take a totally opposite view point to me haha. As for the possibility of being a mod I think you'd make an excellent one; you're active, are present in a few sections and constantly make quality posts.

"A little off topic, but food for thought"

Or, let's not derail an existing thread any further than you already have and let's bring up a similar topic in a separate thread.

    Spoiler:

A little off topic, but a little food for thought.

Recently I've been thinking about the whole "race" game and it's made me think of a strange occurrence in Michigan. I know things might be different in other places of the country but I think it's worth bringing up as a possible factor of matters.

Detroit, as I've previously talked about in the past, is a city that was ravaged by race riots in the 60s which still defines its culture today. A lot of people within the city still blame race on the corruption that goes on in the city, and that makes sense, since most of the population is black, and most of the population is also in intense poverty - poverty that can't really even be imagined by most other places in the United States. It's easy to look and that and want to point fingers.

Detroit is also a city that was ravaged by corruption as well, especially in the turbulent last 50 years. Just a few years ago there was huge news regarding a mayor of Detroit doing a lot of back-end stuff, as well as the city council and other groups of individuals. This also doesn't address the general dysfunction of the city, despite being lead by black individuals. Most recent advancements in the city come privately from companies such as Quicken Loans and most recently, Little Caesars.

Now is this to say that white people are good, black people are bad? No, of course not, and people who read those lines are idiots. But at the same time, claiming the opposite isn't really true either. Ultimately Detroit's problem is that it's very weak and therefore very open to manipulation from anyone who can get into power. Perhaps there is a real danger to putting on "whitey did it" blinders because of the fact that in reality, anyone can take advantage of the system. It's just that because of the financial struggle of many black individuals in the city, they have no opportunity to do it themselves - just like the poor whites in the city and some surrounding areas.

I've always held the proposition that the problem in this situation is as follows:
inception-mid 1900's - Black people, due to racial prejudice in the past, in general had much more difficulty reaching financial gain. As legal prejudice began to subside, the corpse of being impoverished remained, leaving them in a state of inability to advance into higher financial classes. However, this was levied somewhat by factory and blue collar work.
1960's - Racial tension boils. Due to race riots, large amounts of white people flee the city near the end of this period.
1970's-2000's - Detroit falls further and further into ruin. Because most of the wealth was held by whites, whether by consequence of having more well-off families or truly because of racism in some cases, wealth was withdrawn from the city. Many headquarters moved further north or west, or moved out of the metro area completely. Those who were capable of leaving did so, which lead to high black populations in surrounding cities with far better living conditions such as Southfield.

A similar situation occurred in Pontiac, a city about 30-40 miles north of Detroit. Pontiac was less afflicted by racial riots though and more by crippling failures in local industry and over reliance in blue collar work, which downsized. Also the silverdome
2010's - Detroit is labeled as an unlivable wasteland by most outsiders, however, metro area, while avoidant, does try to pitch it to help. As stated previously most recovery is provided privately. Some upper-lower class black people start to move into higher-class black populations, such as Southfield, causing tension (best described as "a blight of crime and poverty extending into a city", although not really the individual people's fault).

Through this time there was quite a bit of internal conflict politically and even quite a bit of corruption too. But the reality was, Detroit was a city that was essentially dominated by black people, and it still faces corruption and massive problems, problems that 99% of the country can't even imagine, to this day. Again, this isn't that "black people are incapable of taking care of themselves", but a lot of the populace blames it just on "white people" when white people haven't been involved too much since the 60's. To put this into perspective, the city had no white mayors between the early 70's until literally January 2014. By attempting to avoid the facts that corruption has still struck a city that is run by the same race of individuals that mainly live there, a lot of people have been quite ignorant to the fact that corruption of money, not racism, leads to problems, regardless of race or creed.

Will the city recover? I hope so. It seems to be making progress, especially with the funding coming in from private organizations. However, the city is far more than just its downtown area and some of the darkest, scariest places in the United States lie in the neighbourhoods of Detroit. I've talked to locals in downtown before, I think awareness to the problem of corruption of power rather than race seems to be growing, but it's still not enough since many are still not aware of the problem and are incredibly racist towards white people. The problem seems to be far more propagated in Pontiac, despite having similar circumstances. (Sometimes you get charming individuals who like to "fake" their problems by claiming that since they're black that they're somehow living the same life that they are in Detroit. Sorry bub, if you're living in Royal Oak or Auburn Hills or something, you are FAR from what people go through in Detroit. Race =/= your experience).

I think that last bit is important though, since the experience of an individual can be incredibly different from the general experience of a race. Especially when you take into consideration different areas, such as the aforementioned Southfield and various other areas with different populations. A black person living in the nicest reaches of Oakland County likely faces nowhere near the level of difficulty as a white person living in Detroit does.

Just something to think about, I suppose.
