The bit about fart-eating made me think of this. X3

Agreed: much love for the new black hatchling designs. Also for the updated ochredrake sprites and for the male sunrise and male electric sprites.

I came across the original Astinus yesterday while reading Time of the Twins, which I haven't picked up for years. I was a little confused until I remembered you saying something about it earlier. XD

Reading about this Astinus was a strange experience @_@

Hey Asty, I remember you enjoyed Hamlet so I thought I might drop an essay I wrote. A characterisation on Hamlet, though it's up to roughly the end of Act 3 or Scene 4 so it's lacking a little. That's just because we were assigned the essay before we finished.
Here it is anyway if you wish to read.
    Spoiler:
Hamlet is arguably the greatest dramatic protagonist ever created. From the moment we see the crestfallen prince we are enraptured by his elegant and persuasive intensity. The cryptic character that Hamlet is, he is full of radical contradictions, he is reckless yet cautious, courteous yet blunt, tender yet ferocious. He takes his father’s death with consuming outrage and righteous indignation, yet he does not show compunction when he scrambles the minds of those around him, a strong example being his love, Ophelia. He uses the fragile and innocent Ophelia as an outlet for his irrational disgust with this mother, the Queen Gertrude. Hamlet is a man full of faults, yet his seemingly negative qualities such as indecisiveness, hastiness, hate, brutality and obsession breathe life into the legacy that is Hamlet, creating a cunning and contemporary view on what a main character should be.
The first time we see Hamlet, it sets the tone for the entire play as our impression grows from his words and actions. Without Shakespeare having to convey a detailed image of Hamlet, we see this dark, condensed character battling many inner depressions. Hamlet displays all the “forms, moods and shapes of grief”. His mother cannot help but notice Hamlet’s outer appearance of mourning, yet Hamlet makes it evident that the overt signs of grief do not come close to portraying the sorrow he truly feels. “For they are the actions that a man might play, but I have that within passes show, that the trappings of woe”, Hamlet cannot forget his father, even when around him have all resumed their lives, content to offer him conciliatory words of wisdom. His own mother even having lost a husband offers the rather unhelpful “Thou know’st tis common all that lives must die, passing through nature to eternity” and her replacement husband Claudius add “We pray you to throw to Earth, The unprevailing woe and us as of a father.” Hamlet remorse is intensified by those around him, and more significantly by the cold more significantly by the cold hearted actions of his mother who married her brother in-law within a month of her husband’s death, “But two months dead, nay not so much, not two.” This act of treachery by Gertrude, who Hamlet had loved dearly, rips th every fabric of Hamlet’s being, and he tortures himself with memories of his late father’s tenderness towards his mother, “So excellent a king, that was to this... Must I remember?” The respect Hamlet bears for his father can be seen in that quote, comparing him to a titan of Greek mythology and speaking of his kindness towards Gertrude.
The high regard in which Hamlet holds his father is intensified once compared to his successor Claudius. Hamlet begins to develop disgust for Claudius and not only for the new king but for all the behaviours and excesses associated with Claudius. Hamlet begins to find revelry of any kind unacceptable and supports none of Claudius’ endeavours. As Hamlet, Horatio and Marcellus await the ghost on the castle wall, Hamlet hears the king engaging in merriment down below, and is mutual across the country, “This heavy headed revel east and west, makes us traduced... The pitch and marrow of our attribute.”
It is unfortunate for the naive Ophelia that the actions of Claudius and Gertrude have also tainted, forever, Hamlet’s thoughts and feelings towards women. It is evident that Hamlet did once love Ophelia based upon the letters and gifts he used to give her, and possibly the same level of admiration had been cherished upon his mother. But, whether due to some overwhelming desire to become the spokesperson for his father who cannot himself chastise his traitorous wife, or due to the possible fact that all Hamlet’s love has “dried up”, Hamlet turns to his once devout Ophelia and destroys her with cruelty once not home to Hamlet, “I have heard of your paintings too well enough, God hath give you one face you make yourselves another... Make you wantonness your ignorance.”
Hamlet’s attitude towards Ophelia begins to change as the play he has arranged for the king begins. Hamlet begins a somewhat raunchy discussion with Ophelia. It can be argued that this conversation he has with Ophelia can be used to support the theory predominantly held by Polonius, which portrays Hamlet being mad. He loathes Ophelia one moment and longs for sexual intimacy the next. But Hamlet is not expressing his desire for Ophelia; he is not lost in the mist of his own madness. Although he does not, on this occasion, lash out with overt cruelty, he is still treating her with demeaning and disrespectful behaviour. Hamlet is cunning in using Ophelia to further facade his insanity, his actions are clearly for the benefit of Polonius, who already believes that Hamlet has already gone mad for want of Ophelia’s love.
Hamlet must be held accountable for his treatment of Ophelia. He is not incoherent or paranoid; his ferocity cannot be blamed on his apparent insanity. In his destruction of his beloved, Hamlet is lucid and brilliant, fuelled by rage and thoughts of his mother’s betrayal. Ophelia is the only outlet for the hostility that he must keep hidden from the king. The belief that Hamlet still genuinely loves Ophelia, and that his deep sensitivity and hunger for justice compel him to behave the way he does, allows us to conclude that Hamlet is at once so heartless yet so virtuous.
Hidden beneath Hamlet’s bitter cynicism and cruel is a desire to embrace those that fate dictates he must despise. Regardless of Hamlet’s hidden desires to be comforted by his mother and to comfort her, the royal couple’s actions have destroyed his faith in humanity, and he contemplated suicide “I do not set my life at a pin’s fee” and further in the play he soliloquizes “To die sleep, no more and by a sleep to say we end... To die to sleep.” All hope Hamlet had of regaining a semblance of normality and happiness vanished when the ghost of his father demands that Hamlet seek revenge. The ghost has placed Hamlet in a most unnatural position by asking him to commit murder. Hamlet hates the king for his treachery, but he would not act on that hate if he were not prompted by the ghost.
Hamlet is an introspective scholar shown by his treatment of the players once they arrived. He is also very reflective and pensive as he procrastinates the action of killing Claudius and is even still uneasy at the thought of fulfilling the vendetta when he proves his father’s ghost to be speaking truthfully.
Hamlet’s paradox of emotions and personality lead the audience to many sceptic thoughts as to whether he is the noble prince or the suicidal, philosophical scholar. “To be or not to be that, is the question”, Hamlet’s third soliloquy gives the audience an insight into Hamlet’s emotions but contrasts with his bitter treatment of Ophelia “God hath give you one face and you make yourselves another.” Hamlet is one of literature’s most diverse characters and sets the tone for the play with everything he says.

Yeah, probably. At which point, I'll let them have the FFL and go back to the BBS or Serebii. And hopefully, I can coax you to come with me because I still like you and want to talk to you, but PC's turning into even more of a pit of voles than the actual Pit of Voles. ...Which is seriously an achievement right there. I mean, holy crap at the quality of the average story, guys.

As for the pic, hee! Yeah, I saw that too and thanked the anons over there for the times when the meme isn't hilariously full of wank. And yeah, he would. The chickens would come from everywhere.

...And now, I kinda wonder what Ender would do in Hyrule. Not Andy. Ender. Because you know there would be chicken bits everywhere.

XD Oh, that's awesome. Hilariously, either way, you can feel free to close it. I might bring in the new version sometime soon, but I'll end up putting it in a new thread if I do.

Incidentally, sorry for stirring drama in your forum. It's nice to see them ready to get to work, though.

XD Oh no. Now I'm hearing it, too. X3 That song has been wandering into my mind here and there ever since that episode first aired, in fact...

Can't say that I've seen those yet, but I'm certainly interested. ^^ There's several things on that site that I've intended for a while to check out but still haven't. I feel like I've probably just barely scratched the surface of awesomeness there.

I want a mango pastry now. =( And money as well, naturally.

Ooh, Orre fic. I'm interested. =D Anyways... going by in-game stuff, it never actually says just how a Pokemon's heart gets closed (except that in Colosseum they mention it's 'artificially' done to make it into 'a fighting machine'). It is kinda hinted though that the Pokemon gets tortured or put under some sort of stress or the like. Worthy of note in Colosseum Shadow Pokemon are made in a remote lab in the middle of desert which when you get there is full of empty prison-like cells, and in XD it's in a 'Shadow Factory' (hardly a nice place as you may imagine =P). Also the original way is to visit the relic stone, a shrine for Celebi, or meet Celebi itself, which will purify the Pokemon's heart (via the power of time and all I suppose). That's the view I've taken anyways, and from what I've seen of other people's thoughts it seems to be the general consensus.

Actually you've reminded me of that tvtropes page linked to recently.. there was a bit about Shadow Pokemon and some theory on it, heh, with many a tangent mind:
    Spoiler:
And how could we have forgotten Cipher already? The organization as a whole can be factored in as Complete Monsters (individual members like Miror B. can be excused).

It may sound hilarious that their scheme is to seal the hearts of Pokemon, but the real horror is what it implies - they inflict a variety of horrors, both natural and artificially-induced, to strip a Pokémon of all sense of compassion, emotion, and empathy, leaving nothing but a soulless, heartless killing machine behind. If any of the Pokemon species on this page caused you to freak out, imagine how much worse it would be if there was nothing stopping it from doing that to you.

You have to fix this by showing them kindness and trusting them. As the Pokémon gets better, it enters Hyper Mode, its Berserk Mode, more frequently, mirroring a pattern seen in some real-world mental problems stemming from abuse or trauma. Plus, myths of Pokemon like that exist from before science could even do such a thing. Celebi can undo the shadow completely via time travel. The only logical assumption is that the psychological/neurological aspect of a Shadow Pokémon comes from sustained, deliberate, explicitly objectifying abuse, and most Pokémon have the personalities of children.

I know that it's terrible for all the shadow pokemon, but somehow a shadow Togepi is just incredibly awful. In the games its a carefree egg that brings happiness, and the anime it has the mentality and personality of two-year old. I just started XD, I reeally want to get the Togepi now.

And I'm also very glad there isn't a shadow Alakzam, in more of a story context than actual gameplay, you'd be screwed. (Yes, I'm the one who thinks spoon mage is a freakish creep.)

To add on to this, Hyper Mode causes an increase in critical probability with Shadow Rush, which back in Colosseum inflicted recoil damage on its user. In XD, it's replaced with Reverse Mode, which instead has the Pokemon sustain damage at the end of each round it's afflicted. Either way, the afflicted Pokemon are not likely to use any non-Shadow move while affected, and refuse to accept any items from the trainer, which can be a bit of a ***** when fighting other Shadow Pokemon. Oh, and to fix either state, you have to either call out its name, use a pack of cologne, or stuff it in Daycare for a while. That's right - not even the freakin' Pokemon Centers can snap them out of it, and given ordinary and improperly equipped people aren't even aware of what their Pokemon are doing freaking out and hurting themselves, they'll probably only notice something's horribly wrong when their Pokemon finally pass out from overexertion! Imagine your pet Pikachu going into seizures at random and passing out, and not only do you have no idea what the hell's going on, neither do the trained medics. That will scare the **** out of you.

And then there are many of the actual owners of Shadow Pokémon, who fall into four categories - people who want to set them right (Wes, Rui, and Michael), people who don't know the bum deal they got, people who want them for their power, and the members of Cipher. Your rank in the organization is typically indicated by how many Shadow Pokemon you possess - lowly grunts typically have one or two, with higher-ups having up to four. Greevil (bastard that he is) has a grand total of seven - four of which are legendaries, and one of which is so thoroughly corrupted that its physical appearance changed to reflect this! The translation to all that is that advancement through the ranks requires its members to be Complete Monsters to their own Pokemon (that may be why Miror B. is roaming freelance in XD; he quit!). Add in that Cipher is one of those Names To Run Away From Really Fast, and it's easy to see how the whole group beats out Cyrus in terms of sheer evil.

Hope that helps some? I'm eager to talk more on Orre stuff though, seeing I know too much about it I feel. XD

And yes, that is a good thing. Miror B should never have such unfabulous hands. =P
