I do have to admit I didn't really approach Inland Empire in the right way. I wasn't in the mood for some of Lynch's craziness, after about 20 minutes I just thought "okayyyy idk what is going on" and didn't really put much thought into it after that point.

Blue Velvet I had to watch twice before liking it, but it is a good film. It's a bit of a drag at first but gets so much better once you get into it.

March/April should be really nice for the weather. I wouldn't recommend going as far north as Hokkaido where I was living for a while since it won't quite be spring there, but in Tokyo it would be pretty nice, I think. Depending on where you go you might even get to see the cherry blossoms, which is always beautiful to see.

So Tokyo, as you might know, has a lot of little areas for different kinds of shopping: Shinjuku, Harajuku, Akihabara, and so on. It has a lot of nice parks, too, like Yoyogi. Tokyo would be great if you just want to go and see a lot of different things. It's also close enough to Yokohama and other places in case you're there long enough to travel away from the center of the city.

If you want to see historical and cultural stuff then Kyoto seems like a place to go. All the temples, castles, and the old imperial palace are there, plus you can take a subway to another old capital, Nara (not that I know much about that area), and the second biggest city in Japan, Osaka, which has plenty of shopping and other things that Tokyo has.

If you want to see nature then maybe somewhere in Kyushu would be good. I spent a week in Kagoshima, at the southern end of the island, in spring, and it's got this semi-tropical/tropical landscape which is amazing. There are also lots of old-ish buildings (not old, like historical old, but still interesting) and in Kagoshima itself there's a monstrous sleeping volcano that spews ash everyday. Kyushu also has lots of onsen (natural hot springs) and those are one thing that I love, just sitting in the different baths and relaxing with all the natural surroundings.

And if you want to go for food then you can get that anywhere, though each area has specialties.

Yeah I didn't like it tbh. I have a love hate relationship with Lynch.

Eraserhead and Mulholland Dr. are on my top films of all time list. Blue Velvet was good, as was Dune, Inland Empire was okay, Lost Highway was really bad, and Twin Peaks is absolutely terrible. Still have to see the rest of his films.

Going to Japan? I recommend not going in August unless it's up north. I'd say that any large city is good. I've been to Sapporo, Tokyo, Yokohama, Kagoshima, Kyoto and Osaka now and they were all very nice. Of course, I enjoy shopping a little more than sightseeing so big cities are what draw me.

And I did go to some interesting places. Kyoto/Osaka have some amazing temples, castles, and palaces to see. What were you looking to do with your maybe-holiday?

Apologies for those expecting a Futurama reference, but I can assure you that I have not missed a 'the' in the title of this blog post.

I assume that maybe three people will check this out (those three being shenanigans, maccrash and Rest), but I thought I'd do my part to publicise the brilliant new short animated film World of Tomorrow by Don Hertzfeldt. The brief synopsis is below, although...

So... it's been a while! But it'll be worth it when you see evidence of my visit to London's first cat cafe! Similar to the ones in Japan, Lady Dinah's Cat Emporium opened up on March 1 of this year in London (about 15 minutes from my house)... and it's already fully booked up until June! Deservedly so, as well. Home to about 10 rescue kitties - all adorable - it's a supremely relaxing environment where you can read a good book (on offer included The Art of War by Sun Tzu, Long Day's Journey Into...

The following may not be suitable to all ages.
The following is suitable for people aged 13 or over.

A bit of background is necessary for this one, as it's my favourite in this burgeoning 'series' of blog posts and a bit of context goes a long way.

At the end of last month, in and around Thanksgiving, I went to the US for just over a week to visit some friends out there (one in New York who is from there originally, the other in Virginia who's doing an internship at NATO for 6 months). I'm lucky enough to have been to NYC a number of times, so have done...

A pretty interesting article comparing Nintendo's recent fortunes to those of Walt Disney Animation Studios in the early 1980s.

If you like either of those things (whether recent or from the early 1980s), I suggest checking out this article.

Let me know what you think in the comments!

(I haven't totally left this place forever, just yet. :D)
