The photo of the monitor from the bottom... wow.

    It's like a revelation.

*just notices that he got a bit too excited and posted several VMs in a row*

Hmm... The monitor was set up with dynamic contrast enabled out of the box, named "SmartContrast". For some reason I never noticed the backlight intensity changes, unlike the Samsung display I had with my now-dead desktop. Guess given time, even that becomes good and worthy of being left on.

    But still... *disables it*

    *sets up HDMI audio passthrough*

*plugs in stereo speakers to the monitor's audio out*

    *Taylor Swift*

For a moment, when I pulled a black-to-white gradient on Paint.NET, I saw lots of steps.

Zooming in reveals that the display is showing the difference between, well, pretty much every step, and that the display is displaying it as-is without dithering. All the ugly truths uncovered by a better monitor. This got verified when I went to monitor test sites. (Paint.NET is not capable of dithering gradients, unlike GIMP or Photoshop)

Pretty much the only fault I have with the monitor is nitpicky - calibration is loaded using a separate program at boot, so the display uses the accurate colour profile after the computer boots completely, unlike how Windows "fixes" my MacBook Air's screen as soon as I log in.

Seems like the HD3000 breaks no sweat in handling a 1080p desktop. Then again, anything these days won't.

I've just done further testing, and I came up with zero dead or stuck pixels.

    1920x1080 24bpp is already a significant improvement from 1366x768 18bpp /w visible dither, no?

I've certainly noticed! Turns out, it isn't my phones are oversaturated - it was the MacBook Air's that's undersaturated! The display's now much closer to what I'm getting on the phones.

It was painful, but after the second try with it, everything works now, with all gamma blocks looking blended in!

I've also replaced my printer inks with XL carts :D

(Hey, if the laptop doesn't have to power its own display, do you think I'll see at least 5 hours accidentally unplugged?)

Lazy way to see if a panel is TN or IPS: squat. If the screen inverts, it's a TN. (This screen never inverts.)

    Hooooooooooooooly caaaaaaaaaarp

I just bought a Philips IPS monitor in-store along with adaptor after I got hooked on what I'm looking at, and at SGD 250 including HDMI cables, DVI cables, VGA cables, and a miniDisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter... (I use my eyes to pick monitors. I don't deal with online reviews. Some things are best seen in person.)

In fact, I'm using it right now, and my eyes feel much better now, having things to be bigger AND having more screen real estate.

(Even more el cheapo than your monitor, and comes with three years of warranty.)

6-point colour calibration, on the other hand... HAEEEEEEEEEELP

What's so "weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" about the iPad?

I think I'd probably get a monitor first before planning on an adapter. I wouldn't trust anything without a warranty or something that I can't see in person, though, so I guess shopping time in Singapore.

I think I only need a mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt to HDMI cable to use an HDMI monitor.

    Which one out of them?

I think I should plan on the monitor first. And check them out in person.

(They don't sell them on the local Apple Store. Then again, it's Belkin. Probably have to find it elsewhere.)

Of course, if something already has a DisplayPort port, I only need a cable, right?

Linky? Also monitor suggestions - one of these things that stay good even after their time. Also, I reenabled mouse acceleration. I've left the mouse pointer speed at the default - middle.

Also, after messing around with my old DSi, man, the screen was better than the 3DS in every regard but ghosting, colour depth and resolution. That's a screen that I can see from the side and be even brighter than the sun!

I've noticed that I'm getting a bit used to linear acceleration, but it's still too imprecise for web browsing. I keep finding myself missing targets. Think gaming mice have a toggle for enabling and disabling acceleration? I've noticed that while disabling it makes a lot of sense for games where the mouse controls the camera (e.g. FPSes), it gets in the way during web browsing or games that rely on pointing.

As for adapters, there doesn't exist HDMI adapters, so I'll have to make do with DVI.

What I'm looking for is Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI or DVI, depending on the monitor's resolution, for monitors with DVI support. Am I right? Do you think there exists third-party alternatives for it? You can plug a Mini DisplayPort cable to a Thunderbolt port, right? So confusing.

I think I'll take a look at some of them when I get a monitor.

Precise, you say? I've noticed that I am not going to get the precision I need at such a high mouse pointer speed with my mice. Sometimes, compromises, man. (I should try these Razer mice and see if that changes my opinion. Using a normal mice might skew me towards having acceleration on.)

My university's book store stocks a lot of Razer goodies. (It's also half a tech shop with ultrabooks and tablets for show.)

I find myself needing mouse acceleration, Windows-style, for the precision in pointing. It feels more... natural. Never gotten the way it moved without it on.

I've noticed that the light sensor behaves faster under Windows - and I've also found that the sensor is to the left of the cam.

What do you think of Razer mice?

Mum's thinking of getting me a new monitor because she finds the 11" screen to be small. Wonder what should I get. Probably need to get a Thunderbolt-to-HDMI adapter, too.

Yes, because Melbourne is clearly superior to Sydney and demands greater respect.

Stilll on the way home from the shops, but the connection tour was great.

I met up with Eon-Rider there and we took on the various mini games that were part of the MotionPlus series. I've got to admit, the games were mostly great and intuitive, although the Virtua Tennis was really clumsy. Quite literally, the players occasionally trip over without warning. Maybe that was just me - Eon-Rider thrashed me. XD

I have to say the best games were the Fencing, which was a...

Okay, I want to start making blogs again, so Imma start with a Platinum Log, as it's holidays and nothing interesting is happening :D.

Beginning - Load from save in Canalave Gym

I entered the battle with Byron expecting it to be a tough battle, so I had my Magmortar sitting in the wings to roast his Steel Pokemon.

Well I went to a friend's the other morning, so I wasn't online yesterday.
Pretty awesome time, though. We (there were four of us) sat in a boat on their dam, for ages with coke and chips. We did a few other crazy things, like jumping of the roof into the pool and playing with fireworks.

Also watched a few movies: Tropic Thunder, Pineapple Express, Boogeyman 2 (lol, it's pathetic, considering it's supposed to be horror.)
Yeah, it was all good.

Uh, that was just to get your attention. If it did, post a comment saying so. :D

Um, it's raining, which is good - it keeps the weather cooler. (It was ~40% Yesterday.) Um, boring day at home. Yeah.

I might be going to a friend's place tomorrow, so that'll be interesting, although I won't be here. Hmmm. I might actually get a name change to my real name, if only it wasn't already taken by some noob with 3 posts and no activity since 2004.

Hmmm... I've achieved...
