Ok, so about, your, Vampire Kisses question. I dont think using the same name matters unless both heroes/heroines have the same name, and the stories have similar themes.
Why just Vampire Kisses? I honestly dont think it matters, and I didnt read the book either. Take it up with some one with more legal status if your actually planning on publishing and selling, otherwise just like minor stuff or just for fun, it dosent matter at all.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beta_reader

Also, I've been to college too. As an English major. Moreover, I'm currently in graduate school for publishing, so I also know what different positions do in relation to a manuscript. (Even the ones that are technically not professional, such as a beta reader.) I can safely say that, no, beta readers don't just check grammar and spelling. It's likely that your friend's friend was thinking of a copy-editor, which is both professional and essentially someone who checks those kinds of details but shies away from modifying the actual content of a piece.

Besides, even if that's all they did, why would the Beta Thread have betas that are specifically geared towards checking plot and characterization? Also, why would you ask for a character beta reader if you think one wouldn't check anything but your spelling and grammar? Sincerely curious here, just to get a good idea of what you were asking the people on the Beta Thread to do for you.

Lastly, if I may ask, where exactly did this point even come from? Last I checked, in my first VM to you this month, I was pointing out that beta readers might not be comfortable working with you because you seem to be hostile and resistant to listen to any of the people who try to give you advice (given what you said in the A/N of your fic). I never said anything about what a beta reader does.

Sorry but not really. Only grammar betas and proofreaders restrict themselves to nothing but grammar and spell checking. That's why the beta thread has listings for things like comprehensive beta readers, plot beta readers, and so forth. I mean, you are requesting a character beta reader, which in itself isn't checking over grammar and spelling but is instead looking particularly at character development. Character beta readers would then need to be able to comment on plot because everything that happens in a fic relates to how the cast acts. Not to mention we've given you advice about characterization in a past thread, and you didn't want to take it. So... yeah, asking for a character beta but then not really being open to characterization advice in public isn't a good sign for potential betas.

The first post of the Beta Place should be able to give you a good idea of what kinds of beta readers are out there and which ones to ask for. I'd suggest taking a very close look at which one you want and directly asking one of the betas who specifically advertise themselves as betas for the areas with which you need help. Alternatively, seek out reviewers who seem to be good in grammar and ask them if they would also function as your grammatical beta reader. In any case, be careful with what you're asking because there's really different types of betas. (And most betas tend to be comprehensive, meaning they'll point out a little bit of everything if they feel the need to do so. Betas are basically reviewers before you post your work, so there's no reason why they'd restrict themselves to only one field.)

Moreover, the point is that if betas get the idea that you might not be receptive towards them, they'll be less likely to take you as a client, no matter what kind of beta they are. I'm a grammatical beta myself, and to be honest, the point I was making in that second paragraph of my other VM still stands for me.

Have you tried asking around the forums or maybe checking other forums (like Serebii) for potential betas? Because I'm not sure if you've realized this (in all honesty), but only a handful of people actually look at the Beta Thread. And that handful of people are all only looking for betas.

In the meantime, it probably won't do you any good to be demanding. I know that capslocking that you REFUSE to write anymore and stating in big, bold letters that you're essentially going to blow off advice we've given you in a previous thread (regarding the fact that, no, the anime has not done everything and that there are thousands of alternative options you can take) make me feel a little uneasy about taking you as a client, even if I had the time to do it. The reason why is because I feel like you're going to lash out at me and demand that I make you a priority, which is rather unreasonable for any beta client to do to their readers.

Point is, if you want to attract a beta, you'll need to actively look for one, and you'll want to make it absolutely clear that you won't be difficult to work with.
