It's not just her though. It's a curse with me. If someone on PC is a girl, I call them boys, and if someone is a boy, I call them girls. XD

A miswording on my part, I meant the usage of a 3rd party program to retrieve keys monthly for NOD32 and install them automatically. That is what I was referring to.

I did. but I still would never condone the use of a third party program, no matter how safe any reputable site claims it to be. it's the way I see it.

and those programs may be modifying NOD32 in some way which could be detrimental to it's function. (unless it's only rewriting registry keys with a fresh trial key every month, but to prove that you'd have to show me something from the program's developer saying that's all it does)

A modified program may operate outside intended parameters if the 3rd party modification isn't properly coded. (and it'd render NOD32 useless if the modification had malicious code in it)

http://i43.tinypic.com/v60lu9.jpg <-- That's talking about how many ITW viruses it finds, not it's overall score. You should do deeper research if that's the only source you have.

My primary point is that Avast! isn't bad, it's free, and you dont need to go through the hassle of getting a new key as often (it's only yearly with avast!) with NOD32, you're at the mercy of ESET, and I don't believe that they're giving 1 year trials out for free.

ok..how about a direct link to the pictures posted on the av-comparative site? (instead of using TinyPic) And are you looking at the LATEST test results? (Febuary 2009)

I said it was equally rated, if it was not rated higher in some categories. I did say 'most categories' but I did not say ALL categories. Overall, ESET scored higher than Avast! because Avast! had a few more False Positives. I did not discount that fact, but I did not mention it either.

I didn't imply that vendors could not legally give out trial keys, you misread my message there. I said that it was illegal for users (under the EULA) to use more than one trial key. (Because according to the EULA, you're supposed to only use one trial key, then BUY a key from them) I'm assuming ESET is only making trial keys readily available for users to make things easier (because they're a larger company than Alwil is)

How does that prove I'm being biased exactly? It doesnt. I noted that the charts and graphs you supplied to me were from ESET's website. That is slanted and biased. (I never belive the charts and graphs the vendor puts up about their own product vs. others)
  10. Melody
    March 28th, 2009 04:42 AM
I am not being biased. I have not once insinuated that ESET is inferior to Avast! at all, I have simply told you what I feel based upon the data I have seen.
That being said, you're running off the current topic again, by attacking my own neutrality.

We have already established that exploiting the trial keys that ESET 'hands out' is illegal, so there's no need to revisit that point and beat a dead horse so to speak :3
You may cite ESET's pricing setup as a counterpoint to my price argument, but outside of that, you're falling outside of the debate parameters. (Which means you have to admit that avast! isn't as bad as you say it is. :3)

(I'm a debater, XD get used to me calling you on topicality) :P

Hahaha. The fact that avast! was monthly in the past has no relevance over it's performance or pay structure today, When I compare the price I paid for a 3 year avast! pro subscription (69.99, plus taxes), to what I had to pay for one year of norton, and Mcaffee (both cost about 79.99 for only one year I even got a special deal through the OEM), Avast! is far cheaper than the major vendors by far. I have not looked into NOD32's pricing, but I have a feeling they charge as much, if not more than norton or Mcaffee does. (If I'm wrong, then that's fine but I still find avast! home to be a better suggestion than exploiting a trial subscription of NOD32)
  12. Melody
    March 28th, 2009 04:21 AM
Not in the home version of avast! in fact, the home version IS free, you just have to obtain a new key yearly. Did you read the fine print on avast!'s site? I don't think you did.

Avast! DOES have pro versions, and I do personally own avast! pro myself (it's a 3 year key, the only thing the folks at alwil are charging for is access to the advanced interface (which most newbies dont need, and a key that lasts longer than a year) ESET's NOD32 only offers trial keys, on a TRIAL BASIS. you're not supposed to milk the system ;) (You can do so, but I won't go as far as advising anyone to do so, especially not when Avast! is equally rated, if not superior to ESET's NOD32 in most categories)

    March 28th, 2009 04:12 AM
trail? don't you mean trial? and actually there ARE laws preventing you from doing such, it's all in the EULA you have to 'accept' before you install the software.
Don't try to downplay or forget that the EULA is backed by THE LAW. Technically it's illegal. Simple as that.

    March 28th, 2009 04:06 AM
Key-gen, Key grabber, there's not much of a difference dude, you're breaking the law no matter what. I'd never recommend that to anyone. (I've not said your suggestion was impossible, but I like to suggest something legit if at all possible, saves people from trouble down the road)

    March 28th, 2009 03:59 AM
I did look. I know what I saw. Experts or not, the forum seemed to be strictly tailored to ESET's NOD32, which makes it hard to believe it's neutrality.

"If you're smart"? Sorry, I'm a little old fashioned, while I do happen to feel that modern day EULAs are bullcrap, and companies do overcharge, I personally don't tell anyone to go hunt up a keygen. (Dude, hunting keygens is what gets you infected in the first place, especially for newbies who dont know a legit site from a hole in their bum)
How about thinking a little before making such a suggestion. (it works wonders)
