 PSH YOU GET IT ANYWAY First one is done by factoring. I'm not sure how they're teaching you but I just do it by eye. So you have x²+4x-12=0 Since the highest power of x is two, you know you're looking for two roots: the values of x at zero. You have no coefficient in front of the x², so you know your answer is going to look something like this: (x + a)(x + b)=0 where a and b are either positive or negative numbers. When you're factoring like this, here's a trick: your two numbers will ALWAYS be factors of the number without an x. In this case, it's -12. So the factors of that are ±1, ±2, ±3, ±4, ±6, ±12. Those are the only numbers you can possibly have. So technically you could just start guessing combinations until you get it right but that might take forever. :P It does help to list them out though. So! When you use FOIL, the two numbers you're looking for become the +4 and -12 in your expanded equation. You get the +4 by adding two of the numbers together and the -12 by multiplying two of the numbers together. So you know you're looking for some a+b=4 and a×b=-12. The only combinations you have are (these are all ±) 1×12, 2×6 and 3×4. You know one of them has to be positive and one has to be negative. So what positive and negative numbers add up to give you 4? With a little thinking, the only answer can be a=-2 and b=6 which gives -2×6=-12 and -2+6=4. So tossing a and b back into your factored equation gives you (x-2)(x+6)=0. You can always just expand with FOIL again to check your work and make sure you did it right. :D
It took me an hour to finish that (only, of course.. there were more than that). >:[

Today, I made a Tier 5 donation to the Pokemon Community Forum and I couldn't be happier. It feels good to give to a forum and community that deserves it and I hope that I will be here for many years and that we all will be as well. I look forward to getting to know to all of you!
