as for my game im using surf to make the girl follow u
(ok soundS silly i know but hear me out)
At the start of the game u start off as a 1 person sprite (movement permission c)
then after getting the girl as your partner
the movement permissions are all fours for surf (so the surf sprite is gonna be the two partners following each other)
when u return to a place youve been to when u didnt have the girl (i know what ur thinking youll be on your own again right?)
well ill make a copy of the maps (with movement permission four)
so when u return to place u have the girl/boy following u
(lucky for me there was no surf in colosseum) -

here is my previous sulotion to your problem:
i have a solution to ur pikachu following problem........
its kinda wierd but here goes:
its possible to make OW sprites bigger
so if u make the running shoes sprite bigger u can add a pikach u in it
so if u obtain the running shoes aswell as pikachu from oak when u press B/X u have pikachu following u -
