    To answer your question by saving the file as an Index will keep it as an index file even if you paste a 16 colour image (e.g a pokemon) I'm not sure what happens when you paste a 256 colour image.

    I suggest if you don't have it you don't have to buy it because it may not always work.

    Have you tried indexing your image on Photo Shop?
