[JOHTO LEGACY] Pokémon Christmas - 2014 Version Released!
Trainin' in a Winter Wonderland

Hack of:
Pokemon Gold (U)

This is much more than a simple graphics hack to add snow. This game takes place the same year as GSC, just later in the year. It assumes that the events of GSC (the radio tower take over, magikarp being forced to evolve, and all that) took place that summer, so the major events will be different, and more winter or holiday themed. Since this is part of what I'm calling the "Johto Legacy", I like to think of this as something of an "alternate third version" as well as a sequel -- sort of like Crystal, Platinum, and Christmas themes all mixed together.

What's New:

- Ability to play as a Boy or a Girl player, chosen in the intro
- Kris as the player's main friendly rival
- Hiro or Mei (Whichever player you didn't choose) as an additional rival
- Major events changed to new and/or holiday themed ones
- New tilesets to give it a snowy winter feel, as well as a "Gen II-and-a-half" feel
- Map updates to be more in line with Heart Gold's map designs, but not exactly identical
- Physical/Special Split added, like the newer games have
- New Pokémon added (NO FAKEMON. See list below.)
- New moves. Flame Ball is a new "Special" Fire-Type move to melt ice blocks, and there are a couple moves from newer gens as well.
- New items (Key Items, Regular Items, etc.)
- Ice sliding on frozen lakes, not just in Ice Path
- A few references to my other hacks you might catch (including hints at the prequel)
- New locations, including: South Isle, Battle Tower, Ecruteak Shinto Shrine, Dragon Shrine, and more
- Restored Kanto locations, including: Viridian Forest, Pewter Museum, and more
- Some wild Pokémon location changes, some are the same
- Trainers sprites and rosters updated
- All Gym Leaders have additional Pokémon, and all of Kanto's gyms are higher levels
- Lots of events have been redone, removed, added, etc.
- Some trainer classes have been changed
- There have been changes to the Elite Four
- Viridian has a different leader
- New Game Corner prizes (Johto and Kanto)
- Additional Prize Exchanges added at the Battle Tower
- Practice Battle Machines added for the Battle Tower. (They are like the ones in the old Sterling Silver, but improved)
- Move Tutors, who will teach your Pokémon a new move in exchange for a Heart Scale
- A version of the "Trendy Phrase" which can be used to unlock certain things, or just to amuse yourself
- More

Pokémon You Cannot Get (Even by trading)

Hoppip (Replaced by Snover)
Skiploom (Replaced by Abomasnow)
Jumpluff (Replaced by Rotom)
Spinarak (Replaced by Mamoswine)
Ariados (Replaced by Weavile)
Dunsparce (Replaced by Leafeon)
Tangela (Replaced by Glaceon)
Sunkern (Replaced by Snorunt)
Sunflora (Replaced by Glalie)
Yanma (Replaced by Froslass)
Sentret (Replaced by Zigzagoon)
Furret (Replaced by Linoone)
Oddish (Replaced by Ralts)
Gloom (Replaced by Kirlia)
Vileplume (Replaced by Gardevoir)
Bellosom (Replaced by Gallade)
Remoraid (Replaced by Relicanth)
Octillery (Replaced by Luvdisc)

Trading with other players via Link Cable has been removed. However, there are ways to evolve Pokémon that normally evolve via trade without having to trade them.

In Goldenrod City's GTS/Global Terminal/Pokémon Center, you have the opportunity to Wonder Trade. The system is still a little rough at this point, but it will be more polished for the Full Version. It is still totally usable though. Just like in Gen 6, you offer up any Pokémon you want from your party (eggs can be traded too, no need to hatch them first) and you will receive a totally random Pokémon back in return.

Known Bugs
* Very Minor
* Potentially Major
- There are no Wild Pokémon in South Isle Woods. This will be fixed in the full version. Sorry about that.
- People may blink out and back in for a second when you talk to them.
- Headbutt and Cut have minor graphical errors under the animation.
- The female player's sprite doesn't load properly on the Fly map in one or two areas.
- Some locations don't have the right name on the Town Map, because I ran out of area names.
- Female Kirlia can still evolve into Gallade.
- Playing on VBA-M may rarely result in graphical glitches when a textbox first loads. This only seems to appear with VBA-M and is not gamebreaking, nor does it always happen. Only observed a few times during testing.
- The Hall of Fame will always display the male trainer's sprites, even if you are a girl.
- There is an error with an NPC's script in a house in Blackthorn. Exiting the house will fix the graphic error.
- Fixed
- Attempting to trade via link-cable will corrupt certain areas of the save file. (Specifically: The player's gender and several new flags used to keep track of events) Don't do that. (In-Game Trades with NPCs or Wonder Trade are still PERFECTLY FINE though). - Fixed

RED - Contributed a lot of the code for the gender selection, also a few devamped tiles
Miksy91 - Taught me ASM, and was a lot of help with the routine for the Pickup ability
Tauwasser - Created the Ex Tileset patch which I used
Koolboyman - Original designer of the Physical/Special split routine
Kanzure, and the other contributors to Pokecrystal - Even though this is a hack of Gold, Pokecrystal helped me track down several various routines that I needed to modify. Sorry I talked bad about that project in the past, that was very stupid of me.
~G0LD! and Chamber - Town Map graphics
Chamber - Original script for Generic Move Tutors from Whack-A-Hack
Luigi-San - Various sprites
Amvz08 - Various sprites
Pixel Eye - Various sprites
Berries Inc - Various sprites
Blue Emerald - Various sprites
Pia Carrot - Various sprites, Various text
Mateo - 99% of the devamped tilesets, also primary scripter, mapper, designer, etc. Generally everything else.

Hey nice job mateo i really enjoy it! :)

Britani Knight March 22nd, 2012 4:21 PM

nice to see this posted, gonna have to try this out as it sounds pretty fun.

Mateo March 23rd, 2012 3:32 PM

Thanks guys! I knew it probably wouldn't get a ton of hits immediately with it not being Christmas time right now, but glad you guys enjoy it!

Urist McHemlock March 23rd, 2012 5:31 PM

It sounded kind of awkward to release a christmas hack right now, but oh well, I might try it.

Mateo March 23rd, 2012 8:29 PM

Well it was one of those things where I originally released it at Christmas on Skeetendo, and then I got bogged down with classes so it took a while to get caught up on bug fixes, so once it was finally *done* I figured I would post it around, even if it didn't make a lot of sense in March. Although I guess I could have waited until July and said "Happy Christmas in July!" like people sometimes do.

ablahblah987 March 24th, 2012 3:43 AM

This looks good. Nice work. I appreciate surprises but is there any way you could explain some more about what makes this different than the original? What are the new pokemon you've added and have you changed the trainers or the wild pokemon locations?

jstolze March 24th, 2012 6:37 AM

Hey, did you happen to edit the trade evolutions so they evolve by level instead? I want to know if I should even train my geodude and abra.

Mateo March 24th, 2012 9:34 AM

bigdonga March 24th, 2012 3:55 PM

Hey is it possible to get eevee before Celadon City?

Mateo March 24th, 2012 4:05 PM

Yes. Eevee is available from Bill in Goldenrod city (he was in original gold, too) Although now you can get him before Ecruteak, whereas in Gold you had to have Bill tell you the time capsules were online first.

bigdonga March 25th, 2012 4:05 AM

Oh yea of course, been a while since I played gold. Thanks mate.

And sorry to be annoying, but can you get evolution stones before Kanto?

JimmyJ99 March 25th, 2012 6:50 AM

Mateo the hack is great. No surprise there, all your hacks are epic and well done.

Mateo March 25th, 2012 1:24 PM

Thanks, glad you enjoy it!

And yes, you can purchase the stones in the department store. It bothered me that they took them out of the kanto dept. store in Gold, so I made up for it by putting them in both.

bigdonga March 25th, 2012 10:48 PM

OK, thanks mate.

Great hack btw :)

Mateo March 28th, 2012 7:26 AM

No problem, and glad you're enjoying it!

naczkens April 10th, 2012 4:05 AM

Oh, I simply love GSC hacks, and this one is really great.
Nintendo should be proud of this modification of Gold :)

Btw. Some movesets are weird - for example Glaceon can't learn return ;)

Mateo April 10th, 2012 9:16 AM

Ah, thanks for pointing that out. I've found a few more small things after release too. I'll get a patch together soon that will fix them. The others that have been found have pretty much been text errors (someone says you met Lance when you didn't, and the "How does ELM know you got an egg from the daycare couple?" question people ask)and other minor things, like a couple of the new Pokemon were in the wrong egg groups. If you guys find anything else, let me know and I'll include it in the minor fixes patch too.

Glad you guys are enjoying this, even with it released at a random non-christmas time xD

Joshawott April 10th, 2012 12:14 PM

Wow! This sounds great! How much of the hack is done?

Mateo April 10th, 2012 1:25 PM

The whole thing is done, and it should be mostly bug free, other than the ones I just mentioned.

ablahblah987 April 10th, 2012 11:30 PM

This may be a dumb question, but what do you do after you meet Lance at the Lake of Rage? It's clearly different than the original game.

Mateo April 11th, 2012 8:46 AM

Remember that gatehouse leading into the woods that had rockets blocking the exit saying they were stirring up trouble? You should check that out again after talking to Red at Lake of Rage.

ascension7 April 11th, 2012 4:55 PM

I loved this hack, especially near the end. I haven't played the fixed version yet, but I'll make sure to try it out! I'll be pretending it's December again whilst I play

Alright thanks. I'm enjoying this hack.

TheChaosBlue April 11th, 2012 6:23 PM

I'm really thinking into downloading the file so I can play this, I read every single positive post here, and while I don't get as much excitment from GSC hacks (personal peference) I will try this out, knowing that this will be more enjoyable. :D
