[RMXP] Pokémon Agate Version

Hey everybody, I'm just an average guy trying to create a fan game. This game is being revived, hopefully for the final time. Over the four years of on and off progress, many talented people have worked to put this concept together. It started as Pokémon Agate Version, and then it blended with Pokémon Tanzanite Version to create Pokémon RoyalJade Version. After that died off, Pokémon Agate Version was reborn. This game is being developed in RPG Maker XP, and it's my first time using this program. The majority of things are complete, but I am in need of an all new team to make this game happen. All I can say now is I hope you enjoy what you see below.

*The story begins 5 years after the events of the region of Johto, with you having a dream.*

In this dream you are in a fierce battle using a Hiranezu against a Togelis. Suddenly, you shift dreams and you see a weird dark and ominous area, in front of you a Pokémon shadow appears along with two human shadows. One of the human shadows steps closer, and then…you wake up.

You are greeted by Yami, the lady who lives with you and their sister. Yami has been taking care of you since your parents had disappeared four years ago; she is a warm and kind hearted woman. After saying hello, Yami informs you of info on the Pokémon league and says you should finally go on their journey, since you were supposed to go on a journey six years ago. Yami tells you to go to the P.A.S University and gives you a card, that reads “Pokémon Ouritso League, fill in the information needed on the back and send to Professor Holly.” Yami says that all today and tomorrow Professor Holly will be giving out free Pokemon and a free Pokédex. She tells you it's time. Yami pulls out a pendant in the shape of a crown with Agate stones in it. Yami tells you that it had belonged to the hero’s mother and she think the hero should have it.

Yami tells the hero to get going before they're out of starter Pokémon. The hero walks outside, and after taking two steps, bumps into a teenage girl. The girl quickly apologizes and goes into the apartment building. The hero walks towards the P.A.S. They walk inside to find the professor giving out Pokémon. She only had three left, and they were Leafryx, Flahare, and Grindygill. The hero picks one. Right after the hero picks, the girl who bumped into the hero takes the Pokémon with a type advantage over the hero's. After that another trainer comes in and takes the last one.

The trainer who took the last starter left quickly. The other girl introduces herself. She says she's Yami's grandchild, and was visiting. They both walk back to the apartment and show Yami their Pokemon. Yami congratulates them, and tells them to follow her to the basement. They walked downstairs to find a field for battling. She tells them to have their first battle.

After the battle, Yami gives each of the trainers 5 pokéballs. She tells them to go upstairs and rest up for tomorrow.

In the morning Yami tells the rival and hero that they should visit Cue ledge after breakfast. The rival didn't say much on the walk there. When they got there, the rival says that she is going to challenge the league and see where it takes her, and walks off to the first route.

Yami calls the hero over and tells him/her to touch the stone relic in front of her. The hero touches the stone relic, and many visions appear, the last one showed the Pokémon League building and the face of someone. Yami asks what the hero is going to do, and the hero explains what he/she saw. Yami says to the hero that he/she should go to the Pokémon League but the only way to get there is by challenging the league. Yami says her goodbyes, and the hero goes off on his/her journey full of adventure, mystery, and emotions.

I approved this since it seems you've got a lot here already but you're just missing two in-game screenshots. I'll give you 48 hours to edit your post with at least two screenshots. If you don't add them in I'm afraid I'll have to lock this.

this game looks really cool. ive been working on my own pokemon game as well. i only have the starters and their evolved forms and a couple of other pokemon and their evolved forms. but yours is amazing!

Narodin July 25th, 2012 10:51 PM

First post has been updated with screenshots, which are definitely a work in progress.

And thanks a ton oshawottlover13!

Nijiri July 26th, 2012 8:56 AM

Wow, at the beginning of the premise, it really caught my attention! The problem is, I think there's a lot of "Yami tells hero/heroine" in it... Not that it didn't deter me from the game, though! I like how the "mom character" gets a lot of involvement with the story (from what it appears to be). It shows how much she cares for the hero / heroine (again, from what I take from the story). Not that the moms from the other games don't seem to care about their son / daughter, but I think this game shows how much Yami cares.

Rocia does kind of remind me of Roxanne a little, but hopefully that won't be TOO major.

youre welcome Narodin and if you need any help i could help you if you want

I wrote up a whole critique but the page gave me some bad resubmission thing and deleted it, but this game has a lot of potential and reminds me of the good old days of game dev. I'll make this one quick and just say that in the map

-Brick path shouldn't go in the road, doesn't look all that great aesthetically and such a mapping style isn't present in the official games/looks awkward in general.
-The shrub near the train station is a bit too vibrant, maybe you could change the palette or find a smaller one in kyle style or something
-Grass near the train station looks a bit out of place too and really clashes with the city's road/sidewalks, you could maybe using a darker grass tile like this and a dirt path to make it blend more, or possibly get rid of it all together.

Hopefully it was at least helpful, I'm not too used to giving critiques like this and as I said the better one got deleted lol :1

oshawottlover13 July 26th, 2012 7:26 PM

i wanna play it too but honestly i have no idea how to play it or practicaly what im dooing. lol

Narodin July 27th, 2012 9:00 PM

The D/P/P styled map has been replaced with the B/W mapping style.

I'll PM you about the details oshawottlover13.

And thank you Nijiri! The storyline definitely needs some revamping, but Yami will play a bigger part in the story than the parents in the Nintendo games. And there's only so much you can do with a rock type gym leader, but I will try to make the differences clearer in the game.

Also, with regards to what you said AceDragonite, I did change the map design drastically, but I'm still using the same grass tiles for the time being; they will most likely be changed however because of the obvious clashing.

Here is the updated map, which clearly has some issues (shadow, nature vs. technology, empty space) but is still a work in progress. This is the starting city in the game, which I'm sure I have the name saved somewhere, but I can't seem to find it hahah.

Small Update: A slightly changed Ouritso region, fixed to match up with the grid for RMXP

All the cities and towns have been names as well, the first city is named Dewbery City.

If you want to script that would be unreal! And it would give me more time to sprite (which I'm going to do until I find a spriter). Storyline development can always use work too, but scripting for sure!

And I'm redoing the starter sprites, starting with Grindygill.

The dex style and icons are borrowed from Aocom on deviantArt. His original art is here

oshawottlover13 August 2nd, 2012 6:59 PM

ok ill need to start learning how. this is all new to me. haha

Narodin August 2nd, 2012 8:40 PM

Okay, I'll PM you some good tutorials.

And I've updated all of the starter sprites, I think they turned out really good actually!

Nimphious August 14th, 2012 2:33 PM

The fakémon are great. The shading could do with a bit of work, but it could be a lot worse!

The map looks well designed and seems to have a good variety of locations and certainly not a lack of them.

Keep up the great work!

Thank you! But I agree, they are definitely going to need redoing..

UPDATE: I've been working on game play more now, so Dewberry City-the starting city-is basically done (mapping, eventing, etc.)
Dewberry City
The map has been updated drastically. (CLICK ON THE NAME TO SEE IT)

Also, a few screenshots have been taken to show some of the components in the game (D/P/P styled OWs, B/W styled sprites, new map concepts, etc.)

And I promise Agate isn't dead! It's just a lot of work and only one yeah I'm trying haha!

Fire Flyy August 19th, 2012 11:04 PM

Man, it makes me so happy to see this game progress, I really love Tanzanite's old fakes and I love seeing them being put to use. I'm not a huge fan of the BW backsprites, they just look awkward in a gen 4 battle system/on gen 4 battle bases. Not a fan of the B/W trees in Dewberry City, I just feel like it would look so much better with DPP/HGSS-styled ones, I'm not sure why, the city does have a lot of potential though, I like the square near the pokecenter. Also this is AceDragonite lol, just made this since I wanted a new name [/secret]

Narodin August 20th, 2012 6:51 AM

The progress is slow and steady, it's getting there though. And yeah I'm just going to stick with the older style. Also the trees are easily fixable, so I can do that quickly some time.

And hey hahah.

Fire Flyy August 20th, 2012 9:55 AM

Yeah, I know the feel, I'm in the progress of developing my own fangame as well, and the maps are hard to perfect. I'm really glad you've stuck with the Gen 4 style, it's not a downgrade by any means, I really think Gen 4 maps look better than Gen 5 ones and the battle system looks fine. Anyways, does Agate's dex follow the Tanzanite one exactly besides the starters, or were there 2 seperate dexes for the games and they merged? If there are, I hope you keep these guys, their designs are fantastic, haha.

Narodin August 20th, 2012 3:07 PM

I find that I'm always editing them and I'll never be satisfied haha. But I've gone back to the Gen 5 trainer OWs and battle sprites mainly because of the essentials pack made for them. But I agree with the maps, I really like Gen 4 map style!

Also, the dex has a bit of both. But the majority of it was all new Pokemon designs. And you'll be happy to know that they are in the game.
