The Low Level Challenge

The Low Level Challenge!
So the basic idea of this challenge is to go through the game with as low levels as possible! Sounds easy? Try it out and see for yourself! ;)

Now, here's where things get a little trickier. To help ensure you stay at low levels and add difficulty, you can only catch pokemon that are of the same level or are a higher level than the highest pokemon in your party (so if you have your highest leveled pokemon out in front, and use a repel, anything that shows up can be caught).

But because one could just solo this challenge, there are some check-up points. Your pokemon must be lower or equal to these levels: (spoilering because it's a huge list)

3rd Gym:
R/B: Level 20
Y: Level 23
G/S/C: Level 17
R/S: Level 18
E: Level 19
Fr/Lg: Level 17
D/P: Level 25
Pt: Level 21
HG/SS: Level 16
B/W: Level 21
B2/W2: Level 21 (same level for challenge mode - you wanted a challenge, right? As for the easier mode it's preferable if you didn't, but level 19 should work (I guess))

6th Gym:
R/B: Level 36
Y: Level 45
G/S/C: Level 30
R/S: Level 28
E: Level 27
Fr/Lg: Level 36
D/P: Level 34
Pt: Level 36
HG/SS: Level 30
B/W: Level 30
B2/W2:Level 33 (for the modes, see above 3rd gym)

R/B: Level 58
Y: Level 58
G/S/C: Level 43
R/S: Level 52
E: Level 51
Fr/Lg: Level 55
D/P: Level 58
Pt: Level 55
HG/SS: Level 42
B/W: Level 47
B2/W2: Level 52 (for modes see 3rd gym)

To have completed the challenge you have to beat the champion once, except for in BW where you have to beat the Alder twice you only have to beat Ghetsis.

The only way to lose this challenge is if you have any pokemon leveled higher than they're supposed to be during any of the checkpoints. It's harsh but there needs to be a consequence. This also includes boxed pokemon. (Feel free to box though)

Tips (take em or leave em):
  • Try rotating your team, and keep in mind you can catch as many pokemon as you want.
  • Also, try and evolve ASAP as evolved pokemon take longer gaining experience
  • Try and avoid battles, here's a location of the item smoke ball to help you escape wild battles:
  • Here's a list of pokemon that take a lot more experience than others to level up!:

I think that's basically it, so here's the sign up!

I think those are all the rules, so good luck! Use this gif for inspiration!

*As a side note, I wish an extra amount of good luck to anyone brave enough to try B/W or B2/W2, due to the leveling system!

My gosh, this sounds fun. I suppose I can add another challenge on the list of things for me to do...

55 is too high for the Champion in FRLG, I managed it with L50 Pokémon, even without using Revives. I think L45 would be more appropriate.

Golurks Were Meant to Fly January 17th, 2013 6:37 PM

BlueShellBeast you've been added. Good luck! :D

@Cerberus I know it's possible to do it with lower level pokemon, but I didn't want to make it too difficult, as success really depends on your team, the skill of the player etc. I tried to make the level for the champions be 7 levels lower or so than the champion's highest pokemon. And anyway, the maximum levels are just that, maximum ;) I encourage people to go lower if they feel like it!

Twihiki and Sophie, you've been added!

By the way, I noticed I made an error in the rules:

"you can only catch pokemon that are of the same level or are a lower level than the highest pokemon in your party"

should have been, and is now:

you can only catch pokemon that are of the same level or are a higher level than the highest pokemon in your party

Update Number 1
-Started up Diamond, did pregame stuff yada yada
-Went to Verity Lake with my best friend (we so tight) and got attacked by level 2 starlies! (guess I should've listened to mom about that tall grass!)
-Decided to go with Chimchar, the only starter I don't think I've completed the game with, and why not go with one of the two fire type families in all of Sinnoh?
-Beat those birds with my awesome chimchar! It's too bad he's level 5... guess that means no early route pokemon for me!
-Got a pokedex yada yada, and named my chimchar Malcolm, after Captain Malcolm Reynolds from Firefly.
-Got pokeballs, but again can't catch anything...
-Fighting unavoidable trainers brought Malcolm up to level 8, this is not looking good!
-EPIPHANY! As soon as I got to jubilife, I raced west. No, not to the GTS, but to somewhere greater.... route 218(I think that's the route?) And after hours of fishing (no joke) I caught myself a level 8 magikarp. I kept on getting level 7 or level 9 ones. >_< I named him Jayne (this is gonna be a naming trend I guess!) Since magikarps take a ton of exp to level up, i figured I'd catch another to help stop Malcolm's assent to level 9 during my rival battle. The next one was also level 8, he was named Cobb
-Went to face my rival and JUST BARELY avoided Malcolm reaching level 9. Phew!
-Raced along to Oreburgh Mine, avoiding all the trainers along the way.
-Caught Inara the zubat, Atherton the geodude, and Badger the onix.
-With a combined effort I managed to beat Roark, thanks to screech, magikarp meat shields, supersonic and the fact that rock is normal effective against rock.
-Saw the Professor in trouble. Didn't want to get bogged down by another lecture, so I skipped around and headed North.
-Reached Floaroma, and showed some Galactic Grunts who was boss! Got honey, smeared it on two trees and went to sleep. In the morning I awoke to... OMG A WURMPLE. I ran, and resmeared. On the other tree was... Aipom! Having to leave for school I had saved beforehand.
-After school I came back to Aipom who I caught at level 11 and named Kylee, and on the other tree was... OMG A SILCOON. ran
-Beat Mars (had to try two times, I'm really low-leveled lol)
-Continued to Eterna Forest, catching Tam the wurmple, Serra the buneary, and Lenore the budew. I reached Eterna City, and ran to route 211 where I caught Jubal the bidoof, and YoSafBridg (actually Yo-Saff-Bridge, but character limit :( ) the meditite. Smeared some honey and trying to figure out what I want to do next (i.e. switch out team members, catch a ponyta even though it's higher leveled etc.)

WOW that ended up being a lot longer than I had intended it to be! My next updates should be a lot shorter than that! Here's the team by the way:

Cobb - Magikarp - Level 12
Inara - Zubat - Level 12
Atherton - Geodude - Level 12
Malcolm - Chimchar - Level 12
Kaylee - Aipom - Level 12
Badger - Onix - Level 12

If anyone has any suggestions for who from my roster of extra pokemon I should add to my team in place of someone else, I'm all ears! :D

I was wondering about that. I assumed that you made a mistake about the repel. Should I restart my Fire Red file seeing as I caught a few that were a lower level than me?
Edit: Also, when you say Party, does this include only your party of 6, or does it also include your box?

Golurks Were Meant to Fly January 22nd, 2013 5:55 PM

I don't want to have to make you restart! I'd prefer you just permanently boxing those pokemon.... but since it was my fault with the rule, you can keep them on your team if you want. I won't be mad :D

And yes, this includes all pokemon in your PC, since otherwise you could keep one pokemon low leveled and then have the rest of your party at solid levels, and then box the good part of your team when you wanted to catch something.

BlueShellBeast January 30th, 2013 2:56 AM

Do you mind if I switch Fire Red to regular Red? My set of Japanese Pokemon games just came in, and I'd rather do the challenge on that.

Golurks Were Meant to Fly January 30th, 2013 11:45 AM

Of course I don't mind! Feel free to. :D

I shall probably have my second update today or tomorrow, I'm right outside hearthome :D

Hey Golurk, I hate to say it, but I must withdraw from my Low-Level Challenge. I am busy enough without all my challenges with school, and my Youtube channel, and the three challenges are not helping. I am hoping that maybe I will restart this challenge once I am done with my current Ultimate challenges, because I always take a little break once I finish. I'll be back!

lineofdeath February 10th, 2013 9:37 AM

I have to pull out, all my consols were stolen, sorry.

I thought that I would give a small update on my Japanese Red leg of the journey. I finally got my batteries replaced and found an hour to sit around and catch Pokemon. (I lost to my rival battle in order to catch more Pokemon). Most of the reason why I haven't advanced yet is because I'm getting incredibly unlucky with running into a level 5 Pikachu... I might just give on that one soon. I still have 8 more Pokeballs, so I'll go catch more copies of the Pokemon once Pikachu comes into my grasp.

Currently Obtained Pokemon (All Pokemon are at Level 5):
