The Legend of Zelda - 3 Hearts Challenge Event

The Legend of Zelda - 3 Hearts Challenge Event Introduction

Hello there, and welcome to The Legend of Zelda, the 3 Hearts Challenge thread! As the name suggests, in an attempt to celebrate the upcoming release of Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker for the Wii U, and the Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds for the 3Ds, this event has been made! Now then, what's this event all about? Well, if you know about the Three Hearts Challenge that people do in the Legend of Zelda games, you'll know that The Three Heart Challenge is a challenge where the player completes a Zelda game without gaining a Heart Container or a Piece of Heart throughout the entire game, keeping the three heart health bar that most Zelda games start out with in the beginning of a game. Rules The final day to post all logs and progress is October 14th, (or about a month from now) which is when the event will end! Please don't use any cheat devices or codes. D: If you want to join, refer to the Sign-Up Section below! Feel free to use emulators if you wish - you don't have to play these games on a normal handheld or console! Try to jot down your progress in this thread - juuust to see that you're at least attempting it, if its a little tough to beat. And of course, you ARE allowed to use any faeries, or potions to keep your health up. Got any other questions? Feel free to ask in this thread! Restrictions & Legitbility

There are a few restrictions to this challenge - in which in this case, you can't do this challenge while playing A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening, because you have to collect a Heart Container after defeating a major boss in order to progress further in the games. So, barring that, you're allowed to do this challenge on any of these Legend of Zelda games below, but keep in mind some things to watch out for, which I'll put in brackets:
The Legend of Zelda
The Adventure of Link (game starts out with four life bar panels, and leveling up Life is optional)
Ocarina of Time
Majora's Mask
Oracle of Seasons
Oracle of Ages
The Wind Waker (one Piece of Heart must be acquired in order to complete the game; however, the player does not have to complete a Heart Container)
The Minish Cap
Twilight Princess
Phantom Hourglass
Spirit Tracks
Skyward Sword (technically a "Six Heart Challenge" as the game begins with this many hearts.) Prizes

Aw, but, what's a little event-challenge without prizes in store? You may be able to get these two emblems for participating, and going beyond that (but that is up to you!): Sign-Up Sheet

If you want to participate, fill out this SUS below!

I can't promise I'll get very far with uni starting soon and the sheer length of the game, but I'll try my best! Great idea for a challenge though :D

skyluigi2 September 14th, 2013 8:14 AM

I'm guessing so, but would I be allowed to do this challenge in Ocarina of Time 3D?

Starlight Sprite September 14th, 2013 8:14 AM

I'll give this a shot. I could use an excuse to go tearing my hair out over game overs. :7: I'm guessing any other optional upgrade (sword, shield, quiver/seed satchel, etc) is allowed?

I can't wait to bomb some Dodongos!

Yes of course! You're allowed to play any Zelda game on any port~

No guarantee that I'll have time to finish this, but we'll see! Gonna try and emulate it so I can take screenshots. B)

Starlight Sprite September 14th, 2013 8:24 AM

I'll probably get started later today. I have some cleaning and other work to be done that will occupy me for most of the day. I've never done one of these before, so this is going to be fun. :7:

tbh I just want an excuse to start this game again 8D

If it turns out I don't have that much time to play on the Wii, I'll probably switch to OoT3D if that's okay.

Heck, this might be my first Let's Play. We'll see where it goes, but I've been meaning to beat this game, so I might as well do it this way.

DavidtheDeadPhilosopher September 14th, 2013 10:20 AM

I'm going to really, really regret this seeing that I havn't even beaten the game yet but...

Game: Adventure of Link

I'm assuming it's keeping to the spirit to not level up health even though it's optional?

Yup! That would definitely cater to the spirit. :3

Awesome, I just started a new game in A Link to the Past-...oh 8(

And since my N64 likes to randomly reset itself, this should be all sorts of fun 8D...

DavidtheDeadPhilosopher September 14th, 2013 11:42 AM

I guess I'll be the first one to post some progress

I've named the file Spiamph

I've managed to beat the first temple...twice...

So as I beat it the first time I accidentally leveled up my health (unknown to be, but apparently if you skip leveling up something, it defaults back to the previous level, so if I skip health and level up attack, It auto-resets back to the 50 exp health level. Every Time. I'm going to have to be very cautious during level ups so I don't accidentally do it again. )

It's going to be a long hard road, The First Temple is the only temple I'm super acquainted with, I've only beaten up to the Second Temple on my actual run. Oh, I did aquire the candle, and sheild spell. I'll be aiming for the trophy, jump, and Second Temple before too long.

My current stats are 3 Attack, 3 Magic, 1 Life

Oooh, I've been looking for an excuse to replay the Ages/Seasons games. I remember doing through NG++ (Ages->Seasons->Ages) after they came out, then haven't played them since.

Started a new file (playing the version downloaded onto my 3DS). I just got the Seed Satchel from the Maku Tree, and I'll head over to the graveyard tomorrow probably. So far no game overs. Woohoo!

Skyward Sword was a very hard game for me, so I don't exactly know how far I will be able to get with only six hearts. I'll probably have to quit the challenge by the time I get up to the third boss, but I can't be totally sure until I actually try it out. xD Also, good luck to everyone who are participating!

Tlachtli September 14th, 2013 6:17 PM

My progress so far:

Two down, a bunch to go. No embarassing deaths yet, but we'll see how long that lasts :P

Starlight Sprite September 14th, 2013 6:46 PM

I was bored, so I continued on a little. I just got the Harp, and that's as far as I'm going to get tonight. No game overs yet, but I came close twice and lucked out that the monster dropped a heart when it died.

I'll do this on an emulator as I can post screenshots much easier than taking a picture of my 3ds all the time. I'll start after first paper for philosophy is due, which is October 1st (Contest ends in the 14th, so I'll still have time)

Challenge Accepted, mate!

Is it ok if I get a Piece of Heart? (one that doesn't add a 4th heart) Because there is something I wanna do and I have to keep on doing it and I can't skip the Heart Container.

Okay! I just finished Woodfall Temple! Here's my stuff so far!

Anyway, one down, 3 to go!

Dragon September 15th, 2013 4:17 PM

Wooohooooo~ It's time for me to mark down my progress so far:

Name: LGD
Essences: 0 so far /crys

> First we met Impa, who asks to drag a rock away. MENTAL STRENGTH AHOY
> We see loads of animals on the way - including monkeys!
> Soon we see a crowd, and someone was kind enough to scoot out of the way so we can hear it. She's quite good!
> We're introduced to Ralph, who acts like an ass, but then we meet Nayru, who seems like a sweetheart!
> Theeeen Impa turns evil. Apparent with the "Ahahahahahaha!". The alter-ego from her comes out, introducing her as 'Veran', as she then possess Nayru. Oh no.
> Nayru goes on a rampage, where eeeeevil stuff happs; people and animal disappear, time goes outta wack and EVIL STUFF HAPPENS /RUNNNN
> Ralph becomes angry and threatens to slicer her to bits, but if he does Nayru dies and he'll be real sorry. Nayru then fleds in some time portal, and we are all alone as Ralphy runs away
> Impa wakes up nonchalantly and gives us the Wooden Sword
(it doesn't sound like WOOD tho)
> Now we go to town and into a shop:
> And we also get THE RING OF FRIENDSHIP! yaaay
> Goin' through Maku road! Nothing is in here! Hooray for non-activity!
> Then I met the Maku Tree, and.. she dies. My breath wasn't that bad.
> Ah, but we can go back in time to rescue her! Thrrrough the portal. However, it was awkward as then some dude thought we were from space like Nayru and then runs off.
> Going south through the town, we come across the BLACK TOWER OF DEATH, where I saw workers working against their will with ridiculous hours and is slowly passing off from lack of dehydration. Let's get a shovel from them!
> I can help them dig stuff but decide not to.
> Instead, we go back to Maku Road, where this time, it's crawling with Keese, and Stalchilds. Fortunately, I didn't get hurt, so, the challenge is going good so far!
> Then I see the baby Maku tree in trouble, and its time to slay some Moblins! Soon I aquire victory, with the sweet sound of success!
> Though, I have to take off soon, back to the future.
> Which seemed fine, until the tree wanted to marry me. What.
> ...She still remembers. Damn.
> Tells me about the Yoll Graveyard to the east, which is the first dungeon!
> Now I also get a Seed Satchel! It has Flare seeds! Time to buuurn things!
> Coming to the east, some kids talk about a ghost. Then they run off. But I'm brave, so I press on.
> Acquired the Graveyard Key, where they didn't tell me where it fits in whatsoever. Till we reach a gate and tried it there.
> First Dungeon sighted!

Tlachtli September 15th, 2013 4:45 PM

Progress report: Another 3 down, bringing my total to 5/8. Yet to die, which is impressive considering I may not have been sober for some of it. Ignore the fact that I'm at 1/4 heart for two of them; I like to live dangerously.

Peitharchia September 15th, 2013 5:00 PM

So far, I've gotten my goddess sword, my green uniform, and met Fei. I'm off to Faron Woods now. I'm getting myself prepared to battle Demon Lord Ghirahim. It took me nearly two days for me to get him defeated the first time I've played Skyward Sword, but I'm not really sure how long it'll take me this time around. ): I'm familiar with all of his attacks and movements though, so it should be a little easier.
