The benefits are that they are 100% free (in most cases), and many come with built-in cheat code support. There are some downsides, though. If your computer is low on RAM, the Emulator may lag. DesMuME is famous for that. Also, it may be hard to find the right emulator for your purposes. But, they can play many different systems, like the NES, SNES, Atari 2600, N64, DS, and Gamaeboy. Some, as well, can display things that a normal system cannot, like the borders of some old Gameboy games.
