I think you're on the right track. You could use some study on realistic shading, but you will steadily improve as long as you keep practising.
My suggestion is to just look at a picture you love, and blatantly try to copy it. Obviously if you share it you should give credit to the original artist, but it's just for you to learn how to get the look you desire.
