it would be nice to have things a little bit like gen II i remember how excited when i beat the e4 and found out there was another set of gyms to take on
what they could do is set up like a path system where some gyms are mandatory and then you get to pick one of two paths of 5 gyms and you can do one path before the E4 and one path after.
