France Legalizes Gay Marriage

Although there was unfortunately a ton of conflict involved with allowing gays to wed in France, it was finally approved today, 331 votes to 225 votes, in the French National Assembly. I'm so, so, so, so happy for France and its people, and it's really satisfying to see this type of stuff occurring more frequently nowadays. Also, with this bill passed, gay French couples can now adopt children as well, which is definitely another plus. :]

This is a victory for the world. Hope there's many more to come. :D

France became the 14th country in the world to allow same-sex couples to wed Tuesday, when its parliament approved a law that has sparked often violent street protests and a rise in homophobic attacks.

Lawmakers in the lower house National Assembly, where President Francois Hollande's Socialists have an absolute majority, passed the bill by 331 votes for and 225 against.

The law also allows same-sex couples to adopt children.

"I hope people across the country will celebrate this moment," Martin Gaillard, a 31-year-old advocate of gay marriage, told English-language news site France24.com.

Opponents of the law have held increasingly angry protests in recent weeks, including a string of confrontations with police in Paris.

They fought hard to scuttle the parliamentary bill because it also allows the use of surrogate motherhood by gay couples wanting children.

The debate is also blamed for fanning a spate of homophobic attacks, including the beating up of a 24-year-old in the southern city of Nice on Saturday, Reuters reported.

I don't know what to think about the French. They're harsh on Muslims and on gays as well - well I mean that the minority conservative part of the population is very vocal. They're lucky they got this only because they've got a Socialist president able to push this through. I think never under Sarkozy.

Even if Hollande is removed soon (French politics are hell right now), he'll have done something good for society (although I'd rather have him recover and end his term well, we need more socialist leaders in Europe, not more conservatives drowning us in austerity).

Sadly, this has exacerbated greatly the anger of the religious nuts- last Sunday, 40,000 people marches through Paris claming for gay people to have less rights than straights because "it's how family and society works". And several gay couples have been assaulted in the last weeks by angry mobs. It's very disturbing.

Yikes, that's terrible. :( So much for Paris being the city of love in that regard.

It is pretty strange to see people protesting this so angrily. France all but had same-sex marriage, except for adoptions, in the form of civil partnerships, but people are angry over this one thing. I think that points to some big underlying prejudice, which makes me kind of sad because I had this image in my head that France was a modern, Western country that didn't have the kinds of social problems that other parts of the world had.

Still, they did the right thing and I'm happy for France. :)

Not surprising, but nice to hear. I'm surprised France took this long, to be honest.

Another country to allow it, eh? That's good to hear. The riots disappoint me, though. You think people would understand. Another sign of humanity's reaction to people being different.

I'm disappointed with France because of the riots and mobs right now :(

I'm glad that they stepped up and legalized gay marriage though, Hollande is trying pretty hard to change things in France but it's unfortunate that his efforts are being met with hardcore conservative backlash.

...Anyway, congratulations France!
