China and the United States have formed a pair of working groups to examine and work together on the issues of climate change and cybersecurity.
US secretary of state John Kerry announced the cybersecurity plans during a visit to Beijing, following months of rising tension over state-sponsored hacking. "All of us, every nation, has an interest in protecting its people, protecting its rights, protecting its infrastructure," he said.
Cyberspace should be an area where the two countries can increase mutual trust and cooperation, Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi told Kerry, according to the Xinhua news agency.
The two countries also published a joint statement on climate change, saying: "The United States of America and the People's Republic of China recognise that the increasing dangers presented by climate change measured against the inadequacy of the global response requires a more focused and urgent initiative."
China and the United States vowed to "set the kind of powerful example that can inspire the world".
It's not yet clear what, if anything, will come out of the formation of the working groups. But it's notable that the two largest economies in the world are attempting to work together, rather than against each other, on a pair of the largest problems facing the globe.
