It's probably because the battles are scripted and the value that takes held items into account is set to Master Ball (0x1), it should be 0x0.

I have done some scripting for a while.
I should probably finish the main event in Breeze Town though, but I got bored in mapping so I did some scripting.
Here's the result.
If you are wondering about what those screenshots are for, is up to you to find out. xD

the mugshots still bothers me... they don't look he same... as in "in each other"... the graphics don't look the same
