chapter 1 ; ROUTE 30

Spoiler:
You have just received your new pokémon, a pokédex and some pokéballs from professor Pine in Cherrygrove. Having made the necessary preparations beforehand, there's really no point in lingering there anymore. Thus, Route 30 is the first step on your journey.

Leading north from Cherrygrove City, the environment of Route 30 is lush with hills and groves and many bug catchers and kids from the city hanging out to train and gather pokémon. Expect to be approached by rookie trainers seeking battles. At the northern end of the route, with Dark Cave nearby, there is a Pokémon Center where travelers can rest up and sleep for the night.

Weather - SUNNY

You can now choose between the events below... Remember that every event only happens once, so you need to check if someone else wants to do the same and do it together with you, or if they are okay with missing out on it and letting you do it alone. It's encouraged to be creative and just follow the milestones of the set events.

Events:

1) Get lost. You are not used to wandering the countryside, so as soon as you step away from the main road, you suddenly can't find your way back again. But you run into one or more other players and together you find your way back again. While you are lost though, you find something glimmering on the ground. They seem to be parts of a broken crystal of some kind, but you can't identify which. Better just keep it with you for now, one piece each.

2) A couple of young siblings from Cherrygrove are trying hard to capture an elusive wild Loudred. If you capture the specified pokémon for the kids, they will give you their combined spare money as a reward! It's relatively much and will come in handy in the future, you just kind of hope their parents won't get to know about this. If you are several people doing this event and share the reward, it'll still be plenty for both of you.

3) In this chapter, you can also choose to not do any special event and just capture pokémon or meet your rival or a random trainer or another player. No loads of money or special crystal thingy if you do this though.

Nathan set out to head North on Route 30. He'd ventured to the start of the route many times, but he planned on going much farther than that this time.

Fang-Lin trotted along at Nate's heels, enthusiastically darting his eyes back and forth to fully take in this new location. I wonder if I should keep him in his Pokeball... Nate wondered. Fang-Lin had been outside of his ball ever since the professor gave him to Nate. He couldn't think of a reason why the fox shouldn't stay by his side, so he decided to let him run free. Besides, what if a wild Pokemon appeared?

Speaking of wild Pokemon; I should probably try to find some Nate thought. The path he was following ended at a wall of stone and the only way around was a large patch of thick weeds running along the trees. Exactly the kind of place that Pokemon would hide.
Nate put his gloves on and pushed through the weeds that came up to his knees. Before he and Fang-Lin had ventured a few meters, something hit Nate in the face. He wiped some white goo off of his face and realized that a Caterpie was crawling through the tall grass, and it didn't look very friendly.

"Ack, a String Shot user. Uh... Fang-Lin! You've got some kind of fire thing you can do, right?" Fang-Lin looked up at him inquisitively. "Ember, right?" Nate mumbled. "Yeah, Ember! Use Ember!"

Fang-Lin yipped and shot some pellets of fire at the Bug Pokemon, easily knocking it out.

"S-sweet!" Nate stuttered. He still wasn't fully used to the fact that his new friend could spit fire, but he was grateful for it. "Let's see what else we can find."
He found a handful of more Bug Pokemon before he eventually got to the other side of the patch of weeds. Fang-Lin had come out almost unscathed, only taking a Tackle from a quick Ledyba.

Nate saw that the treeline that he was walking along thinned out at one point up ahead. Instead of turning and heading North, he figured that he should investigate up ahead. There was a large pond behind the copse of trees. Fang-Lin quickly ran up to the water's edge to lap up some water.

Nate looked around to find some good-sized rocks. He didn't have a fishing pole, but he figured that he could lure out some Pokemon by agitating them. He found three baseball sized stones and chucked them in, one at a time, not far from the shore.
Soon enough, a Poliwag leapt out and, seeing Fang-Lin first, jumped on Nate's Pokemon with a Bubble attack. Fang-Lin was knocked back; Poliwag had the advantage here.
"Use Thief!" Fang-Lin responded quickly, slamming the Poliwag back into a shallow part of the water. Before it could respond with another Bubble, Nate tossed a Pokeball at it. The ball easily captured the weak Pokemon.

"Perfect!" Nate had caught his first Pokemon! He quickly realized that Fang-Lin was struggling, however.

The Water attack did a good amount of damage. Nate hadn't grabbed any Potions, though. The only thing they could do was push on towards the North.

Melody Hughes

Chapter 1 - Route 30

Melody's First Steps

This was it. The moment that Melody had been dreaming of for so long was finally here. She had a Pokedex! She had a Pokemon! Some spare clothes and her sleeping bag were backed up tightly inside the backpack on her back! All that was left for the girl to do was to take that first step that would lead her from Cherrygrove City onto Route 30. Melody could feel her heart beating anxiously.

"Well... no sense in putting it off any longer!" the girl exclaimed. Taking one deep breath, Melody took that first step, leaving behind the plain, boring life of Cherrygrove and beginning that of a trainer. Her eyes lit up with excitement. A broad smile stretched across her face. She even did a little dance. "This is so cool, I'm actually a trainer now!"

A happy, squeaking sound landed in her ears, causing Melody to glance down at the source of the noise. By the teenage girl's side was a Chikorita, one who looked almost as excited and happy as Melody did. The teenage girl could not help, but grin at her new friend. The two had managed to get off to a somewhat awkward start, and for a somewhat understandable reason. The Chikorita, which Melody had affectionately named Blossom, was a most unusual color. In fact, all of the others who had received a Pokemon from Pine had received a Pokemon that was quite differently colored from what it was supposed to be.

Just thinking back to the situation caused an embarrassed blush to climb its way to Melody's cheeks. Upon seeing all the weird colored Pokemon, Melody had ended up having a miniature freak-out. She began to panic and worry that the professor had brought a bunch of ill Pokemon for them to look after. It was only after she had managed to calm down somewhat that Professor Pine was able to inform her that they were not ill, just of a unique color. Melody had still been somewhat skeptical of the professor, but as she walked through the town to Route 30 with Blossom, the Chikorita did not seem to act like it was feeling sick.

"Heh... I hope that they didn't get the wrong idea about me... The last thing I wanna 'em to think is that I'm some sort of weirdo that needs to be locked up in a zoo or something, you know?" Melody asked, glancing down at Blossom as the two began to walk down the path of Route 30. The Chikorita glanced up at Melody. A look of confusion glanced her features as if she was trying to understand just what all the new trainer was trying to understand. A sheepish giggle escaped Melody's lips. "Um... Don't worry 'bout it, okay?"

The Chikorita gave another chipper-sounding squeak in reply. Melody was glad that Blossom seemed to be such an easy-going Pokemon. It probably would have made things much less enjoyable at the start of her journey if the Chikorita was not. The two walked for a bit, Melody talking about various bits and bobs of whatever came to mind. It was not long at all before the two came to a fork in the road... Or rather, the main path of Route 30 heading in one direction with the grassy hills and trees leading another. Melody glanced back and forth between road and the grassy hills, the teen fidgeting with one of her pigtails.

"Hmmm... Following the path here would probably take us straight to the Pokemon Center that Professor Pine mentioned..." Melody mused. "But... I bet going the other way would totally be a lot more fun! I mean, who knows what sort of fun could be waiting for us!"

Blossom looked both ways, watching as Melody turned to the right and began to head away from the main trail of Route 30. The Chikorita let out a nervous squeak, quickly bouncing over to the trainer and biting onto one of the girl's shoelaces. Melody almost tripped up over this, but she quickly caught her balance and glanced down at the Chikorita.

"What's up with you all of a sudden, Blossom?" Melody asked. "We're just going a different way, that's all. Being a trainer is all about having adventures, right? It wouldn't be much of one if we just go the normal, boring way! Now, let's go!"

The trainer reached down and scooped the Chikorita into her arms. Blossom began to fidget in response, but eventually settled in when she seemed to realize that Melody had intended to go down the opposite path regardless...

Christina Langley – Just entering Route 30

Taking a deep breath of the fresh, forest-y air, Christina opened her eyes and looked down along the road that went somewhat into the distance and then twisted off to the right somewhere down the line, trees and bushes dotting the sides, creating a very open forest, at least here at the border of the forest and Cherrygrove City.

Her hands were placed at her hips and her legs parted in what could be mistaken for a heroic pose, and she certainly felt like a hero right now. Looking down to her companion, the Cyndaquil was kind of skittering about the ground to her right, occasionally raising its head to take a little sniff of the air, its eyes looking as if they were closed. Christina wasn't sure whether they actually were and it was just great at sensing things, or if it just had really, really sensitive eyes, but one thing was sure, it looked absolutely adorable.

"… Alright, that first stretch was just the warm-up. From here on out, it's going to be tough and probably dangerous. But, we'll rise to the occasion and meet every challenge head-on, right Sindy?"

The Cyndaquil raised its head to 'look' up at her new master, looking a little unsure at first before the patches of reddish patches on its back flaring into billowing flames as it let out a little squeak. Christina smiled brightly and nodded, kneeling down and giving her a gentle pat on the head. "That's what I like to hear. We'll do everything we can do reach our goal, right?" She reached out a hand and patted the little creature, whom responded by rubbing her head against Chris' hand, the flames dying down again.

"Okay then, adventure and fame awaits! Here we go!"

As the two started down the road, Christina was cheerful as ever. She'd started on her Pokémon journey, and she was accompanied by what she'd like to think was a pretty adorable but also pretty tough little lady. On their way to Cherrygrove, a Hoothoot had decided to try and make Sindy its lunch, but the duo had managed to dispatch of it fairly easily, which made Chris' all the more confident in their abilities. Her head was in the clouds as they turned to follow the road, Cherrygrove disappearing from sight behind them. She glanced down at the Cyndaquil, smiling at how the little 'mon was happily trotting along besides her on all four. Alright… so we need to get to Violet City. Following this road should take me right to it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They continued onwards and were only briefly accosted by a Weedle, which Sindy managed to deal with, although the Pokémon on this route were definitely tougher than previously. Christina was undeterred though, thinking that the tougher their opponents, the stronger they'd get as a team. Plus, Weedle was a bug, and she would rather die than have a bug Pokémon travelling with her. The thought alone caused her to shudder.
After the two had walked through a clearing Chris' had sworn they had walked through five times by now, she stopped and sighed quietly. "Damnit, this can't be right. There has to be a quicker way." She glanced upwards at the bright, blue sky with only a few white clouds here and there, wrinkling her nose thoughtfully while brushing a strand of red hair behind her ear. "… If the town is to the north-west, and I've been going north… going north-west –now- should save me a few hours of stomping along this road!"
Hitting her right fist into her left palm, she nodded. Sindy glanced up at her, tilting her head to the side inquisitively. Chris' looked down at her and pointed into a somewhat large gap between the trees, which had, by now, started growing a little closer, making it feel like an actual forest. "Alright Sindy, here's what we'll do. We're going to cut straight through the trees here, make it to Violet city in a few hours, and bam, first part of the trip's over. What do you think?"
Glancing over at the trees, then back at the clear road they'd been following, Sindy looked rather unsure of the choice of her trainer, but Chris' smiled and shook her head. "Don't worry, I promise we'll be fine. Besides, you're tough and really strong! We'll be able to fight off any nasty things attacking us, yeah?"
The Cyndaquil looked a little down and squirmed on the spot as if bashful over Chris' compliments. "Alright then, it's decided. Come on!" Smiling, she strode towards the gap in the trees, which she proceeded through, into the undergrowth, with Sindy right behind her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The two travelled between trees, through a bush here and there, and past a weird-looking shack which they didn't dare to go near. Eventually, after about twenty minutes of walking, they made it into a clearing with a little pond-like lake, which Sindy hopped over to have a drink of while Chris' looked through her bag, taking out a potion and an antidote, which she placed in the easy-to-get-into pouch at her hip.

"Enjoying your rest, Sindy?" She asked, smiling over at her companion. The Cyndaquil didn't respond at first, as it was staring deeply down into the water. Chris' raised a brow and stepped a little closer. "Sindy? What's wr-"
Sindy proceeded to squeak out in panic and rush back, next to Chris' as the water's surface in the pond broke, an orange, weasel-like Pokémon leaping out and landing on the shore, glaring at Sindy. "W-whoa, what's that? It looks –angry-!" She pulled out her Pokédex and aimed it at the Pokémon, identifying it as a Buizel. "… Right. I think he's cruisin' for a bruisin'. You ready Sindy?" She asked, looking down at her companion with a confident smile. The Cyndaquil looked back up at Christina, seemingly noticing her confident attitude before turning back to the Buizel, hopping a few steps forwards and the flames on her back billowing into life while letting out a challenging, adorably-sounding squeak.

The Buizel snorted and lowered itself onto all four, letting out a low growl at Syndie, which visibly shook her before managing to… well, shake it off. "It's okay Syndie, the Poochenya that barks the most, doesn't bite! Go get 'em with a tackle!" Christina hadn't actually figured out that you could use the Pokédex to see what kind of moves your Pokémon was able to pull off, and as such, she just went off of what she'd seen most newbie trainers doing on television, often accompanied by her brother, which was why they'd been watching in the first place.

None the less, Syndie lowered her head and charged forwards, knocking into the Buizel, which was sent stumbling a little backwards. This only seemed to agitate it further as it suddenly stood up again and swung itself around, something akin to a blast of air being sent from the whip, which knocked straight into Syndie and slammed her to the ground with a yelp. "S-Syndie! Are you okay?" The Cyndaquil quickly got up and shook her head, turning back to her opponent. Phew… okay, let's see, what else could we…

Raising her hand and pointing at the Buizel, Christina shouted out her next strategy. "Alright Syndie, use Ember!" Syndie turned her head back to Chris' with a confused expression, causing some of Chris' confidence to flutter away. "Oh, uh… you don't know that? Uhm… Growl?" Syndie simply stared. "Pound!" Still staring. "… Scratch?" Stare. "Growl?"

With a command she finally understood, Syndie turned back towards its opponent, only managing to let out half a growl before another blast of air slammed into her, sending her tumbling to the ground, Chris' letting out a yelp. "D-damnit! This thing is really tough!" Syndie seemingly had some trouble getting up this time, wobbling a little as she turned to face her opponent with determination again. "S-Syndie, I think this is… this is too dangerous, we need to just get out of here! Then I can give you a potion and we-"

The Cyndaquil growled out challengingly at the Buizel, drowning out Chris' suggestions. Deciding to ignore her companion's stubbornness, she ran towards Syndie in order to pick her up and make a run for it, but as Chris' began running, the Buizel began running forwards, leaping into the air as it started spinning, preparing for another Sonic Boom, this time, aimed at Chris'. Noticing this, Chris' eyes widened and her arms raised to cover herself defensively.

Just then however, the Cyndaquil that had been staring at her opponent emitted a flash of flames from her back, just for a second. The Buizel barely managed to react as the air around it rippled for a moment before seemingly exploding without there being any fire or… well, anything at all. This sent the water-type flying backwards, into the ground next to the water, where it was knocked semi-unconscious.

Chris' lowered her arms, staring at Syndie, whom stumbled a little towards her. She dashed over and knelt down, fishing out a potion, which she began spraying on the little thing. "W-wow, I can't believe you did that! How –did- you do that? That looked more like… a psychic attack or something." The Cyndaquil just squeaked softly, perking up as the potion went into effect. Chris' smiled with relief as she scratched Syndie's chin before standing up. She glanced over at the Buizel that was struggling to get back into the water and she felt a pang of guilt. After a moment's deliberation, she picked a Pokéball from her bag and threw it at the water 'mon, hitting it's tail and causing it to be data-rized and be sucked into the ball. After just a few shakes, it clicked and Chris' walked over to her new Pokémon, picking up the ball with a smile as she put it away in the ball. "Get some rest, I'll get you to a Pokémon center."

She then turned back to Syndie, the Cyndaquil looking rather cheerful despite the dangerous battle a moment ago. "Well, I'm glad you're at least alright. Heh, I'll need to figure out what kind of move that is. Would be invaluable in any fight, seems like. Anyways, let's see where exactly we are…"

She reached into her bag and pulled out her pokégear, navigating through the various screens such as the phone-part of it, the radio, finally reaching the map. She pressed the middle button to load it, and an error came up on the screen. 'Application not found' "… Huh?" Chris' furrowed her brows and clicked it several more times, becoming even more furious with every click until she eventually shut the gear and tucked it away in her bag angrily, gripping her hair in frustration.

"… Mom got me a pokégear without a –map-?! But I have no clue where I am…!"

Blaine - Was this such a good idea? - Route 30

Blaine didn't know really where to go at first. He had just gotten a ton of information and really no direction. Yeah, there was one way out of town, but was that really the best way to go? He didn't know much of the surrounding area after all, but he was a trainer now. He didn't know if most pokemon stayed on paths, so it would make sense to actually go off the path to find some... right? It made sense to him after all. Pokemon were animals and probably wouldn't want to live close to humans or try and hinder them on the road. He didn't know if pokemon LIKED being captured, but his Totodile didn't seem to mind so much. He looked on down at the pokeball yet again and had to wonder why he was stuck with the energetic one. The water type had bounced around all over and he finally had to suck him into the ball to get him to stop.

Was he already a bad trainer if he couldn't control his first pokemon even? He had the small blue guy to stop repeatedly, but that had somehow translated to 'KEEP JUMPING AND RUNNING AROUND AND BEING ANNOYING MORE!!!' If he couldn't handle this one mon... how could he handle more? He had heard of trainers that raised hundreds of pokemon and had control over each and every one of them. Could he even be trusted to do that? He rubbed at his neck as he went down the road. There had to be some sort of side road right? Maybe something more experienced trainers used that was a traner hot spot.

He kept on looking about until he finally found something, a dirt trail off to the side of the main road. It seemed hidden well enough so that just made him suspect that this could be some sort of training hot ground or perhaps a place where good pokemon could be found. It made sense when he thought about it. He walked on down the path and glanced here and there. For the most part he saw no distinguishing marks, but that was probably to hide the path even better. He kept on following the dirt and finally he had to stop. The path had ended, so had he arrived? He took out his ball and sighed. Was this even worth it? Maybe he should have gone to school after all.

He opened the ball and groaned out as he saw the little mon was still in his energetic mood. Great... just great. He sighed and had to kneel down and grab the Totodile by his shoulders, "Hey... hey!" He finally had to raise his voice and the little mon settled down with a curious look on its face. He let out another sigh, "Listen. This isn't a game right now. I don't even know if I like you yet. You understand?" The Totodile just stared and just began jabbering on in its own langugae and he hung his head. "Just... just forget it." He muttered. He rose up and took in deep breaths, "It's okay Blaine... just don't worry about it. Maybe... maybe I'm not right for this?"

He looked on down and withdrew the Totodile. "If I get so tired out from one mon... yeah, I'm not cut out for this." He shook his head and turned about. "Shouldn't have even come." He muttered to himself as he began to follow the dirt again... but as he headed down he noticed something that caused him to pause. It seemed there were multiple dirt paths that were going every which way. No... there had only been one single path before. He had only looked in front of him... so did he take a right or a left? He... he had gone left. That was right! He went down a left path and... he didn't see any road. He had walked for some time and he was sure he should have come upon the road. No, he couldn't be lost. He knew his way around, and he had only gone in a little bit...

Well... this was bad. Well at least nothing else could go-Cue rustling in some nearby bushes that hand him tensing up. Okay, it could get worse. He had heard of young kids dying from pokemon attacks before... but he had a pokemon with him! He had to be safe! He stepped back a bit from the bush and as it moved agian he turned and ran. It didn't matter if he ran furhter into the forest, he just had to find a safe spot and he would be okay.

Route 30

The morning sun glimmered in the ponds and made a lazy pattern on the ground beneath the leaf trees. A calm breeze fluttered over the hills and grabbed the brown hair of the boy, letting some of it fall in front of his eyes. Blowing it away, he just continued to watch the creature in front of him closely.

Chespin was a peculiar kid. He seemed like the bold kind, and he was always smiling stupidly. Not as if he was actually stupid, but as if he couldn't really wipe the grin away. A pair of large front teeth showed at all times. The teeth of a rodent. His brown fur and thick brown helmet made him look very squirrel-ish. Chespin was currently staring back at his trainer, the grin not so apparent, but also more with a look of expectation than annoyance. They had been doing this for several minutes now. Just staring in the silent wind, on the southern edge of Route 30.

"Okay," Ab said, finally, and got up from the rock on which he had been sitting. "I think you're fit enough to come on the journey with me. You're not a weakling, and not a coward. Right?"

"Chess!" the pokémon said with a determined look, still with the grin though.

"Right. Let's go north, I think we should train some. Wanna be strong if we're gonna do an adventure properly."

Chespin didn't seem to want to object to that, so side by side they walked the wide path, further and further from Cherrygrove. Ab did have a feeling in his stomach, like a lump growing the further he got from his hometown. But no. He shouldn't be afraid. He needed to do this. To get out and live. This was really what he wanted, most of all. The sun and the breeze and the grass and the hills, everything was alive around him. Nothing like the stale city. And he had a creature trained to obey his commands. If they trained, Chespin would grow, change shape, learn more attacks. They would be able to take anything on. He would accomplish something.

Some ways ahead, there was a battle going on. Aberdeen heard the noises from it before he saw it. Turning around the thick trees of a grove next to the road, he saw two youngsters battling it out with pokémon they had no doubt captured here on this very route.

"Sentret, Scratch again!" the blond girl called out. Her pokémon lounged forward, claws at ready, almost shining against the sun, scraping the opposite pokémon before it could escape.

The other pokémon was a pink bunny-like pokémon, a Whismur. Its trainer called out another command, but Whismur was too weak to keep battling by now. It had lost its will to fight, and crept up to the kid's leg with a shudder instead of obeying. The kid, a brown haired girl, got angry and tried to shake the pokémon off.

"What does she think she's doing?" Aberdeen commented, still outside of hearing range, but he couldn't help saying it when he saw how insensitive she was to her pokémon. He wouldn't have done that, he told himself.

Chespin agreed. Before Ab could stop him, he had rushed ahead and grabbed the poor Whismur with his Vine Whip! He pulled the pokémon away from its trainer, making it shout in confusion. A Whismur's voice isn't something to play around with; all three humans had to put their hands over their ears at the outburst. Sentret even fainted from the noise. Chespin seemed to endure though, for he still held Whismur tightly in the air with his vines.

"Chespin, let it down!" Ab called out, running up to the scene. Luckily, Chespin released the other pokémon.

"What do you think you're doing?!" the girls cried out. As if Ab was the one at fault here.

"I... What, I was just-" he began, but was cut short.

"Don't touch our pokémon unless you've been challenged or have challenged us, okay?" the brown haired girl said, putting her hands on her hip with an angry face. Whismur crawled back to her, too loyal to do anything else.

Ab just shook his head, picked up the agitated Chespin and kept walking on the road. The irritated chatter from the kids faded behind him.

"What was that for?" Ab asked his pokémon, still holding him in the arms in front of himself. "Did you think Whismur was attacking its own trainer?"

Chespin looked surprised, then shook his head eagerly. Aberdeen raised an eyebrow. "You too thought the trainer was being mean to her pokémon?" A nod this time, a very energetic one. Of course the pokémon would have wanted to defend the pokémon rather than the human. Though, Ab wasn't really on the human's side. Ah, it wasn't worth thinking about, even.

"Well, that doesn't matter. We can't just throw ourselves into someone else's matters just because we think we're right and their wrong. Okay?"

Chespin looked slightly crestfallen, as if this went against what he had been taught up until now. Ab sighed and finally smiled towards his little friend. "Don't worry. I thought she was being stupid too. Had she hit Whismur or something, it might have been different. Okay?"

Okay? Chespin smiled his dorky smile again as he was finally put down onto the ground. Okay!

He's a righteous one, Aberdeen found himself thinking. Righteous and courageous. And maybe a bit reckless. That's just the right kind of partner.

--------

After a while, Ab had decided that following the road wouldn't lead him anywhere exciting. He started straying from it, walking in the fields and groves of trees alongside it. Never losing complete sight of the main path though; he didn't want to get lost after all (OOC: ;P;P;P)

Chespin walked beside him at all times, although he was sometimes jumping from tree to tree, really like a squirrel. Suddenly though, he froze and hid behind a bush.

"What are you doing now? I don't see any-"

Ab hesitated when he saw a bird sit and polish its feathers in a clearing further ahead. It wasn't normal for Pidgey to be down on the ground other than for hunting worms and stuff. This one must either be brave like Chespin, or just reckless. Though right now, Chespin didn't seem too brave, peeking out from behind his bush. The bird hadn't noticed the human yet. Ab knew why Chespin hesitated though; grass types were hit harder than most by flying types.

But that wouldn't stop them. Quite the other way around. "Live dangerously..." Aberdeen murmured before kneeling down beside his pokémon, whispering something to him. Chespin seemed to be okay with the idea, for he nodded and quickly disappeared up into a tree.

Pidgey raised its head as if it had heard something. Slowly glancing around itself, not seeing the human now hidden behind its bush, it decided that it could keep picking at its own feathers for a while longer. That's when they struck.

"Tackle!" Ab shouted, and Chespin swiftly responded by shooting down from a tall tree branch and hitting Pidgey's back with its body before the bird could take off in flight. As Chesping bounced off the bird, it turned around and managed to muster up a Sand Attack by waving its wings as it desperately tried to get airborne. Chespin was hit and rubbed its eyes in pain from the sand particles.

"Don't let it fly! Tackle right in front of you!" Ab said, but he wasn't sure it would work. Pokémon didn't blindly trust and obey a trainer they had just met. He had seen pokémon on TV documentaries shun their new trainers for weeks before they were decent in battle.

But Chespin, still with closed eyes, lounged forward on Ab's orders and actually hit the Pidgey again. They both fell back down on the ground, the Pidgey clutched below the grass pokémon. Ab found himself raising an eyebrow. Chespin... was he stupid or just trained by professor Pine to be stupidly loyal? Either way it suited Aberdeen well now. Pidgey didn't look too well. They had beaten it.

He could... Yes, he could. He would. He took up an empty pokéball from his bag - making a quick mental note to put them somewhere more accessible in the future.

"Okay, move, Chespin," the boy said, and Chespin again obeyed. Pidgey tried to get up, panting, but the pokéball hit it before it could start flapping its wings again. It didn't take many seconds of shuddering before the pokéball clicked, indicating that a pokémon had been captured inside it. Aberdeen had captured his first pokémon!

"Hey," he said to Chespin as he picked both him and the pokéball up. The grass type looked at him with reddened eyes and that toothy grin. "You're pretty decent. But don't ever obey anyone else but me like that, okay?"

Chespin laughed, then sneezed. Okay.

--------

Luckily, Ab carried some potions with him. His mother wouldn't have let him leave town without them, of course. He could heal Pidgey up just after capturing it, which possibly was the reason that it didn't try to fly away immediately. Instead he just earned a sour gaze from it as he directed his pokémon towards the bird and read its information. It could evolve twice - he already knew that of course. And it was female. He didn't know that. But since most species existed in half male and half female, just like humans, it wasn't a weird thing. The bird didn't want to sit on his shoulder or fly alongside him or anything, but at least she didn't protest when Ab called her back inside her pokéball and moved on with the journey. From what he'd seen on documentaries, they could have had a much worse start than this. Pidgey was probably mostly bitter for Chespin being clever enough to attack from above when she was vulnerable on the ground. It would pass. No use in being bitter for long anyways, Aberdeen thought.

As he and Chespin kept walking alongside the road but not quite on it, they heard some shouting ahead. Approaching the sounds, Ab realized that it came from two kids who stood on a grassy field and seemed to be arguing. The boy was sitting on a rock, arms crossed and his glasses deep down as if he was thinking hard. The girl was pacing back and forth, blaming the boy for having failed at somehting. Her own glasses were almost falling off from her violent arm waving.

"Seems like they have some kind of problem," Ab commented to Chespin, who just nodded dorkily. "Not our problem."

Then, just as Ab was about to step up onto the road again and pass them by, he heard the girl say: "If only we could hire someone to capture it for us or something! I mean, we've got a LOT of money."

Yeah, Ab couldn't really walk away after that. Chespin glanced up at him with a face saying are you seriously going to take money from kids for a simple capture. Why, yes. If they so wished, he could!

Alex

"Get ready sonny. You don't want to be late don't you?" Alex's mother said shuffling the pots and pans. It was a miracle that she wasn't exercising at this point. But if you came to think of it, it made sense. Her son was leaving on a pokemon journey and she had to be ready for him.

"Mum, seriously I'm already dressed up and everything. You just need to serve me food." Alex groaned. "And anyway, what about work today?" he questioned.

"Now, now son. I've taken a holiday today. Here's you're breakfast," she said, clearly in a hurry, handing him a plate with bread and sausages with a cup of coffee on the table. Alex studied his mother a bit while wolfing down the meaty sausages along with his bread. For some weird reason, he had a feeling deep down inside that she was going to get back onto her lovely treadmill as soon as possible. After drinking his coffee, Alex licked his lips in order to clean them up. However crazy he was, Dad was an extremely good cook.

In about 15 minutes Alex had packed all his needs in an azure bagpack and set off to Professor. Pine's Lab. It was a pleasant day with the sun shining brightly and the tall grass rustling slowly due to the wind blowing gently. Alex entered the lab and found himself in something of a futuristic house that you would normally see in a sci-fi movie.

He saw a young woman about the age of twenty five with black hair, wearing a white lab-coat handling some Pokeballs noisily in a corner. Alex came slowly behind her and when she heard the shuffling of feet behind her she suddenly jumped back as if she had come face to face with a burglar. "Oh it's just you Alex," she sighed.

"Would you like your new pokemon?" she asked. Barely when she finished these words a Froakie leapt onto Alex's shoulder and gave him a tiny punch on the face. "Ow, that hurt." Alex cried. "She seems to like you!" Professor Pine laughed. "Would you like to take her?" she then asked.

"Well, alright then." Alex sighed. He received the pokeball of the Froakie along with a few Pokeballs, a Pokedex and a Pokegear. He then headed outside into Route 30 and encountered a Whismur.

"You ready Fraokie?" Alex asked as he sent out the Froakie. It just smirked as if it didn't care about nothing in the world. 'Oh well…. I guess I just have to stick with you till now." he sighed.

Continuing on, Nate tried to avoid running into wild Pokemon for fear of Fang-Lin getting hurt even more. His new Poliwag wouldn't be a help; that was assured by the last battle. He couldn't go very far without running into a territorial Pidgey that hit Fang-Lin down to almost fainting.

Nate returned him to his Pokeball, and tried figuring out what to do. He'd never had a Pokemon before, and he'd never been given responsibility over much. He couldn't decide his next move.

"Heya!" A young kid, about twelve years old, appeared around a corner in the line of trees. "You look like a trainer! I think it's time for a battle!"

Nate tried to say no, but the kid had already let a Ratatta out of a Pokeball. The kid took up a battle stance and stood in anticipation. Nate stood still with look of shock on his face.

When he realized that Nate was complying, the kid lost his battle stance. "C'mon, you have to battle me; we're both trainers!"

"I-I can't. My Pokemon is already hurt too much..." Nate replied.

The kid pulled out a potion from his bag and tossed it to Nate. "Well, let's get it back to fighting shape!"

Nate was even more shocked. What trainer would erase their advantage in battle? He hesitated, then called Fang-Lin out of his Pokeball. As he applied the potion, the kid gasped.

"What is that? I've never seen a Pokemon like that. It's not a Vulpix, is it?"

"No; at least, I doubt it. Vulpix are red and brown, right? This is a Fire type, though. My name is Nate by the way. Thanks for the potion."

"I'm Joey. Now let's get to battling!" Joey took his battle stance once again. His Ratatta hadn't even moved.

Nate smiled, then rose and took his own, akward, battle stance. "Fang-Lin! Use Scratch!" Fang-Lin followed through with the order, leaving a faint mark on the Ratatta's snout. After an order from Joey, the Rattata replied with a Tail Whip.
Nate wondered what that attack did, as Fang-Lin didn't seem to harmed at all. Nate had him fire back with Ember, and Ratatta responded with Tackle. Fang-Lin looked somewhat more hurt than Nate had predicted. Maybe Tail Whip strengthened Ratatta somehow? he wondered. "Go again with Ember!" he called.

Ratatta looked pretty hurt, and it was unable to get to its feet for a few seconds. However, it couldn't even gather the strength to stand back up and fell down on its side.

"Ratatta! I thought for sure you'd win!" Joey said as he rushed to his partner's side. He looked back up at Nate and reached out his hand. Nate hesitantly shook it as Joey congratulated him on his victory. "You may have won today, but if we battle again and I might just win!"

"Oh, I doubt I'll see you again, Joey. I'm heading out on a journey today. I'm just passing through on my way to the next city." Nate replied.

"Really? Are you going to Violet Town?" Joey asked excitedly. "Because that's where I live! I'm just training here on Route 30. I'm going to go on a journey soon, too! Maybe even tomorrow. My dad said I can leave whenever my Ratatta is strong enough. He likes to exaggerate though. He wants me to make sure that its in the 'top percentage of all Ratatta.'"

Nate was surprised that someone so young would be going out on his own already. Maybe it was just because Nate wasn't given the opportunity for his own journey until now. "I guess that means I may see you again. Maybe."

"Wait, I know!" Joey exclaimed. He held up his wrist, which had some odd little machine strapped onto it. "We should trade PokeGear number."

Nate hadn't a clue what a PokeGear was, other than the fact that Joey was referencing the machine on his wrist. "I... I don't have one."

Joey looked saddened. "You don't? That's a big surprise." He put his arm back down. "They're great machines. You can call your friends, listen to the radio, and check the time. You should try to get one."

Nate didn't have any friends, he didn't listen to music, and he didn't really care what the time was when he could just look for the sun. "I don't think I'm interested. But thanks for telling me about it, anyway. I have to go; my journey awaits." Nate was trying to get out of this conversation and continue on.

As he left, Joey turned and said "I think the man in the house up ahead has a couple PokeGears; maybe he'd give you one!" He turned back around and Nate thought he heard Joey mumble "Top percentage..."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Soon after leaving Joey, Nate came across the house that the kid had mentioned. In the front yard of the house, there was a small tree that was only about four feet tall. As he got close to the tree, Nate realized that there was some kind of fruit nested on top of the tree.

Nate investigated it, and saw that the fruit was green and very similar in size and shape to a Pokeball. He looked towards the house to see if anyone was looking through the windows. The lights were off. He didn't see anyone nearby when he glanced around, either.

Nate reached out for the fruit to pluck it, but found that he had to rustle the entire tree to free it. When the fruit finally popped out, he realized why it was so hard to pluck. The attaching stem was as thick as his thumb.

"I wonder what kind of fruit this is." Nate thought aloud. He figured that it probably had some kind of use, so he decided to keep it. He dropped it into his bookbag, then proceeded towards the door of the house, where Fang-Lin was sitting patiently.

Nate knocked on the door, but there was no response. He was somewhat interested in getting a PokeGear, even though he saw little use for it. His real reason for wanting to speak to the man inside was that he wanted to find some potions. There was no response after knocking a second time, so Nate decided to get in another way.

Surprisingly, the door was unlocked. He crept in quietly, searching the large room for any signs of potions. Around the corner was a small kitchen, so Nate investigated that first. The house's resident kept a lot of potions and medicinal items inside a large cabinet. Nate picked out a couple potions and a Burn Heal, just in case.

He walked carefully back into the main room, where a large table was set up. Five small machines like the one that Joey wore were on the table. A black and gold one caught Nate's eye. This was an easy choice for him.

Before he left, he made sure to peek through the windows in case the resident was approaching the house. Seeing that the coast was clear, Nate crept out of the house, beckoning to Fang-Lin to follow.

The path lead him further North and let the house disappear behind the trees. When it was no longer in the line of sight, Nate pulled out the PokeGear and strapped it to his wrist. He tried playing around with the buttons, but the machine wouldn't respond.

Just great, I stole something defective. He realized that he might be able to get it fixed, however.

Nate remembered that he had some potions, so he let his new Pokemon out of its Pokeball. The Poliwag had lost all sign of aggression that it had shown the last time Nate had seen it. It looked anxious, but also like it was in pain. He pulled out his potion and sprayed it on the young Pokemon.

After that, it looked ready to go, so Nate decided to train it for a while. He called the two Pokemon along and headed farther up the path.

Suddenly, he heard the voice of a young girl. All he could make out was "
We've got a LOT of money."

Route 30

"Hey kids!" Ab shouted and walked up to the two, smiling. The boy instantly put down his arms, and the girl stood with gaping mouth for a second, then shone up as if she realized immediately what Ab could be used for. He had a pokémon walking next to him = he was probably a trainer!

"A trainer! You're a trainer, right?" she said eagerly, eyes glimmering behind the rather large glasses.

"Certainly am!" Ab said proudly, patting Chespin on the head. The pokémon smiled its usual toothy smile.

"You have got to help us! There was a Whismur we befriended, it was wild, and we really want to become trainers but we're pretty young, you see, and finally our dad said we could be trainers if we managed to capture that pokémon we've been playing with, but it evolved and now it's different and won't listen to us, it's fighting us even and-"

"Clara, will you shut up for a moment," the boy, whom Ab now guessed was the brother of Clara, spoke up. "We don't have any pokémon of our own," he said solemnly to Aberdeen. "Befriending a little Whismur is one thing, trying to capture a Loudred a completely different."

"Well of course, jeez, aren't they a bit dangerous even?" Ab said, scratching his head. "Sound powers blasting your eardrums off and stuff."

Clara looked terrified at Ab's words. "I didn't know!"

"And their fists, whoa, they can probably crush a Caterpie without even trying."

Chespin raised an eyebrow up at his trainer. He knew what Aberdeen was doing, and didn't quite like it.

"I guess it's futile then," the boy said, putting his glasses higher up on his nose and turning away from the trainer.

"No, Jim, I really want Loudred! I want to be a trainer with Loudred!" Clara pouted. Aberdeen glanced from one to the other. They couldn't be more than 9 or 10 years old, seriously. Not many kids were allowed to travel, or hardly train a pokémon, at that young age. Teenagers were more mature... At least for that.

"I'm a trainer, though. I could capture it for you," he said, almost nonchalantly. "But it's dangerous... It'll be pretty hard."

"We'll pay you! We have lots of spare money!" Clara said, smiling at the chance.

"Well..." Aberdeen pretended to consider the deal. He had already accepted it though. But Jim butted in.

"No, if it's that dangerous, you shouldn't go alone. We need another trainer to help you."

Aberdeen looked crestfallen. "I, um, okay but, no really, I can probably-"

"How long have you been a trainer?" Jim asked with a suspicious glare. A breeze fluttered through their hair and made some leaves fly by in the quiet seconds that passed.

"Okay then, a second trainer it is!" Ab sighed, rather sourly. He looked around. Where to find another trainer here though? One which wasn't an annoying youngster or crazy bug catcher...

Hang on, there was someone walking on the road towards them. A guy in gray clothes and a cap turned backwards. He didn't look as immature as most of the trainers around here. He would do.

"Hey, you there!" Aberdeen called out and waved with a smile, even though he was a bit bitter for not getting the whole reward if he had to split it. "Want to earn some money?"

Melody Hughes, Christina Langley, & Blaine Debour
Chapter 1 - Route 30
A Most Unusual Meeting

Melody was not sure how long she had been wandering about. What had originally started out as a grand idea to lead into a fun-filled, adventure-packed journey across Route 30 had quickly turned into a rather puzzling trek. Shortly after stepping off the main path of the route, Melody noticed that most signs of any trainers being about seemed to more or less disappear. In fact, the only company the girl had had, besides that of her Chikorita, was the occasional wild Pokemon. While the teenager had no qualms about this initially, as it let her and Blossom get some battle practice in, she began to think that half an hour's worth of walking around without sight of another dirt path... much less a fellow trainer, was a bit much.

"You know, Blossom... I'm starting to think maybe this wasn't such a cool idea after all," Melody said, glancing down at the Chikorita who walked beside her. "I mean, it's totally cool the way you handled that Caterpie back there, but... I'm starting to think we might be a bit lost."

The Chikorita glanced up at Melody as she spoke, a small squeak escaping her small mouth. Blossom nuzzled up against the trainer's leg, as if she could tell that Melody was starting to get a bit worried about their situation. Melody sighed as she bent down, scooping her Chikorita back up into her arms.

"Maybe we should take a breather, yeah?" Melody suggested, making her way towards a nearby tree stump. "You fought like, four or five times already... So I know you wouldn't mind."

Blossom cheeped in with a small squeak. Taking that as a yes, Melody took a seat on the stump and placed her Chikorita in her lap. It was very quiet for the time being, almost unsettling so. If it was not for the fact that the sun was so bright and it being so clear this morning, the trainer might have been a bit on edge.

"Some start off this is..." Melody sighed. "One hour in and I already have no idea where I am... What if I can't find my way back to the trail and we end up stranded out here in the middle of nowhere for the rest of our lives? I only have one or two potions on me for the time being and I doubt I should really eat any berries. They would probably make me break out in a rash or something and then I'd get dizzy and pass out. What if it gets really cold at night? Or some wild Mightenya jump out of the trees and try to eat us! I mean, I don't have a lot of meat on my bones... I wonder if they like things that way..."

As Melody continued to quietly debate with herself about the dangers of living out in the forest, she noticed something odd. A somewhat quiet, but slowly rising noise from somewhere off in the woods. The sound became louder and louder, eventually being distinguished as someone screaming at the top of their lungs. A second later, a red-haired girl tumbled into the little clearing, arms flailing around with something oddly green on top of her head. Following her was a small, oddly-coloured Cyndaquil with the flames on its back billowing while squeakily hissing up at whatever was on the girl's head.

"It's in my hair! It's in my hair! Get it ooooouuuut...!!!" she screamed, just as one of her arms struck the thing, causing it to fall to the ground. It squirmed around a little, turning out to be a small Spinarak, who now looked thoroughly dizzy. The Cyndaquil growled and semi-ran towards it, causing the little bug Pokémon to turn and make a break for the trees, where it disappeared into a bush.

Christina, now feeling the insect having left her hair, slumped to her knees, quietly whimpering while brushing her hands over her hair, the Cyndaquil worriedly hopping closer to her. "I... i-is it gone? P-please tell me it's gone..."

Melody did not know what to make of the display she had just witnessed. At first when the red haired girl came charging out of the bushes, the girl had thought about making a break for it herself, thinking that it might have been a wild Usaring charging at her with hunger in its eyes. Needless to say, the trainer was quite relieved that that was not the case.

"Um... Y-Yeah, yeah. It's totally gone," Melody replied to the girl, slowly getting up from the stump where she and Blossom had been resting.

Blinking her eyes slowly open again, Chris' started out by patting her head to make sure the thing was really gone, before looking up and actually noticing the somewhat wild-looking girl in front of her. "... Oh!"

Quickly getting to her feet, she brushed herself off while the Cyndaquil tilting its head while watching the Chikorita accompanying the other girl. "Uhm... sorry you had to see that." Chris' said with a bit of a blush to her cheeks, followed by a sheepish smile. "I... got a little bit lost, and that... -thing- jumped on my head while I was trying to find my way out of here. And... uh, I'm a little bit more lost now." She paused, offering her semi-gloved hand to the girl, smiling. "I'm Christina, by the way. Nice to see someone else out here."

"You got lost out here too?" Melody gasped, her eyes widening in surprise. Was Route 30 really that much of a confusing path to navigate? If it was, just what was the rest of her journey going to be like? The girl could not stomach the thought of getting lost on every route she happened to cross... Snapping out of her daze, Melody realized that the trainer who had held her hand out and introduced herself was still waiting. An embarrassed giggle escaped the girl's lips as she shook Christina's hand. "Sorry 'bout that. My name's Melody! It's nice to meet ya!"

Glancing down for a moment, Melody noticed a Cyndaquil standing close to Christina. Melody suddenly snapped her fingers, a broad smile stretching across her lips as she noticed the Pokemon's odd coloring..

"Hey! I know you!" Melody shouted. "Well, not really. I mean I saw you. At least I think I did. Well, I'm sure that part doesn't matter. What I mean is that you totally got that Pokemon from Professor Pine, right? Well, of course you did 'cause it's like mine, but isn't it weird with how they're colored?"

Raising her brows a little at the girl now known as Melody's little outburst, though giving her a smile, looking down at her Cyndaquil, who had now shuffled a little closer to Melody, sniffing at her leg. "Oh! Yeah, I did, actually!" She then tilted her head, a confused look on her face. "What do you mean, it's weird? Isn't this their normal colour?"

"Well, not really. I mean, I guess it's sort of normal but not. I mean, um... hold on a sec!" Melody replied. She sat her Chikorita down on the stump for a moment before sliding her backpack off of her back and then sat it down on the grass. Bending down and opening it up, the girl began to rummage through it, pulling out a somewhat faded photo of a young boy who looked to be about her age. But more importantly, he was holding a Chikorita that was colored green instead of the yellow-ish-brown like Melody's was.

"See? They're a totally different color!" the girl said. "I don't think it's normal... Unless maybe this one in the picture is the weird color. Which it might be because it's an older picture, but I don't think the fading on it would make the color look that weird, ya know?"

The Cyndaquil, now seeing the Chikorita had been placed down on the stump, waddled over and pushed herself onto her hind legs, with her front legs placed against the stump, raising her head a little to sniff at the Chikorita and give out a little squeak. Chris', meanwhile, bent a little forwards to see the picture, raising her brows.

"Huh... that -is- weird." She looked over at the Chikorita and then down again, brows furrowing. "I... have to say, the green colour does kinda look more... natural on it, sorta. But... mnnh. I guess we'd need to ask someone who knows." Standing up straight again, she shrugged lightly. "Then again, the colour of your Pokémon doesn't -really- matter, right?"

Blossom glanced down at the Cyndaquil who she had really noticed for the first time at this point. A small smile graced the Chikorita's mouth as she gave the Cyndaquil a rather proud look, as if being on top of the stump was something special that not just any Pokemon could accomplish.

"I guess you're right..." Melody nodded, putting her picture back away into her backpack. She put it back onto her shoulder and smiled at Christina. "So, um... Do you happen to know where about this is? I mean, I know it's Route 30, but um... Like, I mean do you know where on it is?"

Sindy seemed to notice the proudness and confidence Blossom was exuding from being on top of the stump and let out a little huff. Grasping the corner of the stump, she began pulling herself up, not wanting to be outshined just because she was standing slightly below the Chikorita.

Christina sighed a little, rubbing the back of her neck with a little frown. "I wish I knew, but I don't have a map application in my pokégear... -apparently-." She scowled a little, shrugging her shoulders. "If I'd have to guess... we're probably about... a third up the way of the route? We might be close to the Pokémon center near the cave that's supposedly at the west-turn of the road, but if we can't even find the road, then..." She sighed again, looking a little lost.

"Oh, we should totally go together then!" Melody quickly decided, seemingly missing out on the information that Christina had shared about their probable location. The shorter girl grinned as she began to jump, as if excited by the thought. "I bet if we worked together we could totally find where we are and where to go! It works in the movies and stuff anyways!"

Meanwhile, Blossom gasped in surprise as Sindy began to climb up on to the stump... her stump. The little Chikorita began to squeak in defiance, jumping up and down as if her precious castle was about to be invaded by intruders. Unfortunately for the grass Pokemon, she suddenly lost her footing. A squeak of surprise escaped Blossom's mouth, before she slipped off the backside of the stump and tumbling onto the grass below.

Christina giggled at the girl's eagerness. Sure, she might look a little wild, and she might be a little... hyperactive, but she seemed like a really nice girl, all in all. "You know what? You're right. Besides, if there's two of us, there's less chance that the bugs around here get any bright ideas." She subconciously raised a hand to scratch the top of her head at the memory of the sneaky Spinarak. "Right then, let's go find our way back to the road!"

As Sindy managed to climb onto the top of the stump, she was surprised to find it empty. Peeking over the edge, down at the now fallen Blossom, the Cyndaquil raised its little front legs into the air and let out a rumbly little growl, clearly happy with her taking over of the stump.

Blaine really didn't know where he was now, but if anything he was safe. He could only wonder just how long that could last out here though. He was sure he could die any second now, so he had to be prepared for anything really. If he could just find some sort of bearing... mabye a sign... or some sort of road. That was when he heard some noises and paused. He gripped the pokeball on his waist, feeling far safer with at least some sort of defense on his side. He pulled it out and sighed, "Alright... one time. One more chance." He opened the ball, "Alright, get at it or something." He said. "There's noise there... and you fight. So go at it."

The Totodile for a moment just stared up at him before letting out a loud and happy gurgle and ran right past some bushes and... just jumped up and down while letting out jabbers left and right. Blaine groaned and covered his head. He could hear no attacks coming out, so did that mean Totodile had given up? He peeked his head out slowly and then withdrew it. Other people here? Not just humans, but GIRLS. He shuddered and shook his head. Okay, he could do this. He just needed to keep calm was all. He didn't have much experience with them, but from what he read online they could be very... complex.

"Hello?" He asked as he stepped out, his Totodile just plain old running around and looking like a derp face at the moment. Dear Arceus why did he have to get the broken one? "What are you two doing out here?" He asked warily.

Melody jumped at the sudden voice, almost falling onto her backside. Looking around, she spotted a boy probably about her age with a Pokemon in tow... or maybe it was more of the other way around, as it seemed the Totodile was the one leading him around. Regardless, Melody was relieved that it was another trainer and not a wild Scyther coming at the duo to cut them down to bits. A broad smile quickly replaced her surprised look, as the girl quickly hopped over towads the boy.

"Hi! We're um... well... We're lost!" Melody replied for the two girls. From the tone of her voice, it almost sounded as if she was happy about this fact. Quickly extending her hand and taking his into it, without a moment's delay one might add, Melody began to shake it with glee. "My name's Melody. Who are you?"

"Uh... Blaine." He said after a moment. He quickly snatched his hand back and rubbed it a bit. "Uh... nice to meet you?"

Christina gave a sheepish little smile after Melody had made her introduction, lifting a hand to rub the back of her neck. "Uhm... hey. I'm Christina, it's nice to meet you too. Sorry about Melody, she's a little... excited." She stepped over besides her new friend, smiling a little more easily at Blaine. He looks about the same age as Melody. Wonder if I'm really the only one of my age group who just started out... wow, and now I feel old. Good job, Chris'.

Shaking her head, she gestured back at the trees behind her. "But, yeah, as she said, we're lost. We were going to go try find our way back to the main road and up to the Pokémon center on the way to Violet Town. Oh! Maybe you have a map application in your pokégear?"

Blaine frowned and looked down, "Not really. I would have my computer, but I had to leave it behind... which I think is stupid." He added in. "I think I got a broken one though..." He glanced over at the Totodile who obviously had no concept of personal space as it grabbed at the Chikorita's head leaf and then went over and jumped on the Cyndaquil, trying to ride the little mon like some sort of Tauros.

Sindy let out a squeal as the Totodile landed on top of her, managing to squirm out beneath him as the flames on her back billowed up, letting out a string of squeaks and growls while wildly gesturing her tiny arms at him, clearly trying to get something through to him, with the Totodile just standing there, staring at her tantrum with a dumb smile on its maw, its head tilted to the side.

"Damn, that's a shame." Christina sighed and rubbed the back of her head, glancing over at the ruckus with the three 'mons. She walked over and leaned down to pick up Cyndaquil, the flames dying away as she held it up against her chest, the little 'mon seeming to calm down while still glaring daggers at Totodile while Chris' returned to the conversation. "Well, I guess we'll just be going in a straight line and hoping for the best. What about you?"

As the Cyndaquil had her tantrum the Totodile quickly raced at it and picked it up to dance with it, though once she was picked up the 'dile went on over and began poking the Chikorita insistently, almost as if it was born to only poke and be overly annoying. Blossom, who was already angry at the Totodile for yanking her leaf earlier, snapped at the little water Pokemon by attempting to bite at it. Quickly realizing that it was probably best for the Chikorita not to get into a biting contest with something that had so many teeth, Melody reached down and scooped Blossom back into her arms.

Blaine shrugged, "I suppose. I really don't have any better plan." He looked on over at the spazztic water type, "Would any of you be willing to trade?"

"You should come with us then!" Melody suggested... which sounded more like an order if not for the downright peppiness of her voice. "Three trainers together out in the middle of nowhere would definitely be better than not, right? Of course!"

Blaine frowned, "Uh... I asked would any of you be wanting to trade...?" He glanced about and down at the Totodile that was currently running in circles, pausing and catching his breath, then resuming running around like a derp face. "Why me?" He groaned to himself.

"Trade...? Trade what? I don't have any baseball cards with me..." Melody replied, spinning around to face another direction. "They'd get all bent up out here."

Blaine silently stared at her and then hung his head, "You know what I mean." He pointed to the water type who had somehow gotten onto the wooden stump... and somehow, don't even ask Blaine how, he had managed to clamp his large jaws on the top of it and was flailing wildly in the air as drool dripped onto the ground.

Christina, having been watching the Totodile flailing about, was now watching it as it was flailing about with its jaws wrapped around the stump, a barely held-back snort of a snicker escaping her, quickly covering her mouth with her hand to try and hide it. "It, uhm... definitely is lively."

Melody glanced back over at the Totodile. She watched the water Pokemon flailing about, part of her wondering if he had somehow gotten stuck like that. It was sort of cute in its own way... He definitely had some energy to burn. It sort of reminded Melody of something, but the girl was not able to put her finger on it. Slowly, she glanced away from the Totodile and down to Blossom, a thoughtful look in her eyes.

"Well..." Melody mused, causing the Chikorita in her arms to suddenly begin a small panic. Blossom began to shake her head, a pleading look in her eyes. "No, I couldn't possibly! Me and Blossom are best buds! Well, maybe not best yet... We're friends though, yep! Besides, I think the little guy likes you too much to go with someone else!"

Blaine was about to protest, but then he felt something... wet. He glanced down and somehow the Totodile had not only somehow teleported right in front of him inexplicably fast, but was now busy gnawing on his shoe. Blaine was quick to pull it away and recalled the little demon. "How about you?" He asked, turning to Christina. "Surely you would like a Totodile, no?"

Blinking her eyes back up from watching the Totodile gnawing on Blaine's shoe, Christina's brows raised and she quickly raised a hand to rub the back of her head and glancing off to the side while the Cyndaquil seemed to curl up into a semi-ball in her arms to seem as little and unnoticable as possible. "Oh, uhm, uh... I... mmh, I think I'm good with Sindy here, thanks, heh..." No way in hell am I taking on something as active as that thing. I may be shooting high, but not that high. "Maybe you just need some time alone with him to... get to know him? Lots of trainers have problems with their Pokémon at first, I hear."

Once the debate on whether the Totodile were going to any of the girls was done with, Sindy seemed to relax a little more, even letting out a little sigh of relief while glancing over at Blossom, waving her little arm over at the grass Pokémon, as if trying to say 'No hard feelings about before?', or even 'What a relief, huh?'. Christina smiled and looked between the two with an obvious eagerness in her eyes. "Either way, we should get going. I'd like to at -least- reach the center before it got dark, but hopefully we'll get all the way to Violet Town before nightfall. So, let's get going, yeah?"

Blossom nodded in response to Sidny, letting out a small, pleasant sounding chirp before she snuggled against Melody. This earned a small giggle from the said girl, before she turned and nodded at Christina. She flashed the girl a rather toothy-looking grin, rocking back and forth on her heels as if she could not possibly sit around for another moment longer.

"Totally! Let's get going already!" the excited teenager shouted with glee. She glanced over at Blaine, flashing him a similar smile that she had to Christina. "Ready, buddy?"

Blaine sighed and looked down at his ball, putting it once more on his belt, "Yeah, I suppose so. Soooo.... You two SURE you don't want a Totodile?" He asked in an almost pleading voice as he followed the two along.

Right up the road, two children were speaking to each other as another trainer, who looked a year or two younger than Nate, was approaching them.

The trainer started talking to them, but Nate couldn't hear what they were saying. As he got closer, though, the trainer noticed him. He called out to Nate, saying something about money.
Nate stopped in his tracks. "What did you say?" he called back. Fang-Lin looked at the other trainer with a cocked head.

"You heard me," Aberdeen said, putting on a smile as welcoming as he could. "These guys need help catching a certain pokémon. And you're a trainer..." He glanced at the Fennekin by Nate's side. "Right?"

"Oh, please, would you help us?" the girl Clara said pleadingly, the sunshine sparkling in her glasses.

Hmm... It's not like I'm on a specific path. Nate thought. He looked down at Fang- Lin. The fox had his attention pre-occupied by the other trainer's Pokemon. Nate didn't recognize the brown rodent.

"Yeah... Yeah, I guess I could help." Nate turned his cap around so that the bill protected his eyes from the rising sun. "Where's the Pokemon?"

Chespin shone up seeing the other, odd, pokémon. He waved at it with his tiny hand, smiling widely. Fang-Lin yipped in reply. Ab turned back to the siblings with a questioning look.

"Um..." Clara said, looking to her brother.

Jim sighed and stepped up. "Last time we saw it, it ran north. Since we chased it for a while without success, we probably tired it out. So it might have gone to the lake by the road to drink and rest." He proudly put his glasses higher up on his nose after this conclusion, and his sister praised him for his cleverness.

Ab rolled his eyes. "Okay then. Will you come with us or...?"

"Of c-"

"If it is that dangerous, and if we do pay you, I think you trainers should go alone," Jim said solemnly.

Figures, Ab thought. "As long as you will pay us!" he said and then nodded towards the other trainer.

"Y-Yeah. You two should stay here." Nate replied. "Wait—what kind of... dangerous Pokemon?" he asked Ab, as the two started walking on the road.

"Oh... It's just a Loudred," Ab said with a shrug and a wink to the other guy. "But they're also just kids. It's probably better we help them than them running around breaking legs or whatnot. Plus, they mentioned a reward, as you heard. Haha!"

"Yeah... Well, I should probably introduce myself. I'm Nathan. Nate for short." Nate responded.

"I'm Aberdeen!" He put his hands together behind his head, as if supporting it while he walked. "Ab for short, I suppose. So you're just a trainer running around here, or you're on a journey like me? I haven't seen your pokémon before," he added, nodding down towards the gray fox.

"I haven't either..." Nate said. "I don't really remember what Professor Pine called it, but it sounded something like 'Fang-Lin,' so that's what I call it. I'm kind of on a journey. Not sure where to, yet. I just really wanted to get away from Cherrygrove."

Ab nearly flinched. "Whoa, you're doing Pine's errand too? Heh, it's not that strange, I suppose. I knew I couldn't be the only one who got the chance. Chespin here is my first pokémon. Also caught a Pidgey earlier! And yours... Fang-Lin, eh?"

He picked up his pokédex from a pocket and pointed it towards the silver fox. "Eating a twig fills it with energy, and its roomy ears give vent to air hotter than 390 degrees Fahrenheit." The robotic voice, rather gender-neutral, sounded from the speaker of the pokédex.

"Cool. A Fire type, I see," Ab commented. "Don't have any of those yet."

Nate's eyes widened. He scrambled to grab his machine-thing from his bag. "What is this thing?" He opened it up and it repeated the same words that Ab's machine stated. The screen said "Fennekin."

"Oh, that's what she said." Nate mumbled. Wait.

Where's my Poliwag? He stopped walking and looked back. "Poliwag! Where are you?" A bush rustled and Poliwag stumbled out, then ran up to Nate. Nate was a little mad that his new Pokemon had wandered off, but he couldn't help smiling after seeing the little thing looking up expectantly at him. Nate turned around and started walking again, beckoning for Poliwag to follow.

"Sorry, I forgot that I just caught this Poliwag. She must have gotten curious and wandered away." Nate stated. "But, yeah, I'm from Cherrygrove. Pine gave me Fang-Lin and had me set out for an adventure."

Aberdeen now pointed his pokédex at the little dark blue blob wobbling on the ground between the trainers. "The direction of the spiral on the belly differs by area. It is more adept at swimming than walking."

"It's a Water type," he mumbled. "Don't have any of those either yet. I guess I don't really have anything yet!"

Chespin's smile couldn't help but falter a little at that. Luckily, Ab noticed. "Oh, sorry buddy! I didn't mean it like that. I just mean I'm very new still."

He looked up to Nate again. "I just left Cherrygrove today too," he said. "So we're in the same situation, then!" Ab wasn't the one to ponder things deeply. At least that's what he liked others to believe. But he couldn't help wondering who this guy really was, now. They were in the same situation at the moment. New trainers, appointed by professor Pine. Going away from their hometown alone. Or together. Every adult who had journeyed at some point in their youth had stories about how they had met allies and adversaries along their path. Few journeys were completely without danger. But Ab wouldn't be the suspicious one. He never was. You didn't get far in life by not taking chances. And Nate felt like a pretty friendly chance.

They walked in silence for a minute or so, the little lake the siblings had mentioned slowly becoming visible near the road ahead. Poliwag got a small spring to her step when she saw the water up ahead.

Nate was a little worried about her wandering off again, so he picked up his steps a bit to follow. As he got closer to the lake, he heard a pulsing noise that almost sounded like a broken radio.

"Hey Ab," Nate called back. "Do you heard some kind of pulsing sound?" He looked down at his PokeGear. It wasn't the source; it still didn't work.

"Huh?" Ab said. He had been wearing his red headphones around his neck all this time. At Nate's words, he picked them up to his ears to see if the sound came from them. But his Pokégear and its radio function was off at the moment, safely in the pocket opposite the pokédex pocket on his trousers. "No, why?

But Chespin had noticed too; the brown pins on his helmet-like head stood right up and his goofy smile had changed into a suspicious face. He made a little squeak and a gesture towards his new ally, the silver fox, to ask if he could pinpoint the source of the noise.

Fang-Lin responded with a few yips, twitched his ears, and ran off to the east of the lake. He didn't go too far before stopping and turning to look at Nate. Poliwag made a little squeak and she and Chespin both ran after the Fennekin.

"Whoa, what now?" Ab started.

"I think Fang-Lin hears it too." Nate said to Ab. He started off in the direction the Pokemon were going and Fang-Lin started padding off again.

Oh, great. My Pokemon are hardly trained for this... Nate thought.

The Pokemon were running towards a cave nestled within the forest. The sound was getting much louder as the trainers got closer to the entrance. "It must be in there." Nate hesitantly added. Fang-Lin had stopped to wait for the party to catch up.

"Time to face the monster..." Aberdeen panted, with a grin.

Melody Hughes, Christina Langley, & Blaine Debour
Chapter 1 - Route 30
A Web Of Trouble

"... And that's how I ended up where I found Melody." Christina finished, glancing between Melody and Blaine. Having just finished her short story which began with her running late to the professor's office, the three of them along with their various Pokémon (Minus Blaine's Totodile because he didn't seem inclined to make friends with it just now) walked along the undergrowth of the forest, the trees starting to seem a little more confining, with progressively less sun shining down through the crowns of the trees.

"All that just because of one little Spinarak?" Melody questioned, a small giggle escaping her lips in the process. "That's kinda silly to make such a panic over a little spider, isn't it? Besides, most bug Pokemon are kinda cute... He probably just wanted to be friends with you!"

Blaine however remained silent. He stared at the ground in front of him and every so often let out a sigh, wondering how long this would go on for. He wasn't a really deep conversationalisty and in fact he found this quite boring.

"Bug Pokémon aren't -cute-." Chris' snapped at Melody without even turning her head back, squeezing Sindy a little tighter, which caused the Cyndaquil to squeak out in protest. Chris' lowered her down onto the ground to let her walk on her own. "They're horrible, icky things that I just want to burn. With their... large, shiny eyes and multiple limbs and..." She shuddered all over, shaking her head while looking a little embarrassed about being afraid of something so silly. "... I just don't like 'em."

Melody offered the red-haired girl a smile, turning to face the two trainers as she walked. "I guess it's something you just can't help. Kinda like brusslesprouts. Those things are what's really gross. Oh my gosh, could you imagine there being like, a brusslesprout Pokemon? Now that's what'd be all scary and nasty, lemme tell ya. He'd be all slimy and green with that weird odor comin' from him, and then your parents would probably be all like, 'You should take one with ya on your journey because he's good for you!' Now, that's what I would call gross, Chrissy!"

About that time, due to the girl's walking backwards, she managed to trip over the root of a tree that was sticking out of the ground. She let out a rather loud "oof!" as she fell backwards, landing on her rump with a small groan. Blossom had toppled out of her arms at that point, but the little Chikorita seemed to be alright for the most part.

"W-whoa, Melody!" Chris' hurried over, leaning down with a worried look on her face. "... You need to look where you're walking or you'll get really hurt."

Blaine for the most part had to wonder how she did not see that coming. He just stood there, not really sure if he should help her up or let her get up on her own. He mostly just stared at the ground and kicked a rock about.

Slowly, Melody climbed to her feet followed by Christina, while Melody was rubbing her backside slowly. "Hey... Don't ya think we should have found like... I dunno a road or something by now?" Melody asked as she bent down to make sure the Chikorita she had been carrying was not hurt. "We've been walking for a bit and it's just getting like, darker you know?"

"I think so." Blaine said out of the blue, "I think we're too far from the road. If it gets too dark we'll just look for some lights. The towns have lights so we'll be able to find our way then." He looked back at his ball, "You two sure you don't want to trade?"

Christina waved her hand dismissively as she walked past him on their continued way through the forest. "Yeah, I'm sure. I'm -very- happy with Sindy, thanks. But..." she halfly turned to look at them as they walked, a frown on her lips as she glanced a little upwards as well. The trees' crowns had now grouped so much together that it almost blocked out all light. "... It's nowhere near evening yet, so it's not like it -should- be this dark. The forest's just really dense here, I suppo-"

Just as she was about to finish her sentence, due to still glancing back at her companions, Christina didn't see the large, almost see-through spiderweb that was strung out between two trees, and walked straight into it, prompting her to let out a squeal. "A-aaah! W-what's going on?! Get it off of me, please!" She began flailing, which only caused her arms and torso to stick to the webs even more, her Cyndaquil squeaking out worriedly from the ground beneath, without really knowing what to do.

An amused smile made its way to Melody's lips as she watched her friend panic and flail about. Sitting Blossom down on the ground, the shorter girl quickly made her way towards Christina. It took every ounce of willpower in Melody for the girl not to burst out into a fit of giggles at her friend's dance-like flailing. Her Chikorita had a concerned look on her face, wondering if the red-haired girl was going to be alright or not.

"Okay, okay! Just hold still for a sec and I'll help pull the stickies off ya," Melody said, trying her best to grab hold of the webbing on Christina. It was something a bit easier said than done, as the webbed girl's constant movements were making it hard for Melody to actually take hold of a spot. "I guess you really weren't kiddin' when you said you were scared of bugs, huh?"

"I-I'm not scared of bugs, I just really -really- don't like them!" Chris' replied through grit teeth.

Blaine looked on and let out a shaky sigh. He wasn't high on bugs either, but really they were nothing. He went over and began to pull as well, "Hm... fire burns silk. Just get the Cyndaquil to burn it off. That could work I think." He said as he tugged as best as he could. "This stuff is rather strong. Anyone have a knife or something?"

Sindy turned her head to look up at Blaine with her squinty eyes, clearly confused about what he meant. However, with Melody and Blaine's help, the three managed to break the webbing and Christina staggered back, quickly peeling leftover webs off of her body, wrinkling her nose and shaking her head. "Eugh, that was -awful-. If I ever see the spider that made that thing..."

"Like that?" He asked as he pointed above them. Right above the three were four small creatures that were hanging on webs. They looked to be like green and black spiders, but they were quickly skittering down the sorrounding trees toward the three with anger burning in their eyes, furious that their trap had been ruined. Blained slowly stepped back and chuckled softly, "Uh... I think we should get out of here... uh..." He threw his ball out, "Quick Derpy! At them!"

"Derpy? Really?" Christina asked sideways at Blaine, throwing him a cocked brow and an amused little smirk before focusing on the oncoming threat once again.

The Totodile danced about happily even when the bugs approached with murderous glares. The water type just gurgled and the bugs paused, seemingly confused at the happy act. He took another step back, "Uh.. do... uh..." He pulled out his pokedex and looked over it. Thankfully it had a screen just for Derpy and he took a quick glance, "Aqua Jet!" He cried out.

The Totodile gurgled a bit more, but then stopped at the sound of the command. It seemed odd as in an instant it's cheerful attitdue disappeared entirely. A dark look entered its eyes and it let out something akin to a murderous screech. His whole body was surrounded with water as he flew out at a Spinarak and slammed right into it. Blaine's eyes widened in surprised as it flew out further and slammed the bug against a tree. The very second the attack ended the Totodile fell to the ground. It quickly got up and began dancing with that happily dumb look again. "Great... I got the derpy psychotic one!" Blaine groaned in despair.

"Who cares, it worked right?!" Melody shouted. The girl honestly was not expecting the three of them to suddenly be forced into a battle like this. Quickly glancing down, Melody noticed that Blossom kept glancing back and forth between her and the spider Pokemon, as if she was waiting for something. Snapping back to reality, the teenager pointed at one of the closeby Spinarak. "Quick, tackle it out of the way!"

Blossom chirped in response and dashed towards the Spinarak that Melody had pointed at. The little grass Pokemon charged into the spider as hard as she could, causing the Spinarak to tumble backwards and roll back some. Blossom let out another chirp, this one sounding much more fierce... which really was not saying much.

Having noticed what Blaine had done with his pokédex, Christina reached into her shorts' pocket and pulled out the item, flicking it open and aiming it at Sindy, standing firmly between Chris' and the oncoming spider, growling out quietly, which sounded oddly cute. The girl was surprised to find the amount of information posted on the screen. "Whoa... this thing's -really- handy, actually." After a moment, she'd seen the moveset of the Cyndaquil and smirked confidently, shutting the 'dex and tugging it away in her pocket.

"Alright Sindy, we've got this covered! Use Extrasensory on that thing!" She raised her arm and pointed, peering down at Sindy as she simply looked over her shoulder at Christina in confusion, prompting a somewhat defeated look on her face. "... What? But the Pokédex-" She paused, wrinkling the bridge of her nose a little in thought. She had an idea of why Sindy was confused about it, but she put that thought aside, once again striking a pose with her arm stretched out.

"In that case, follow Blossom's example and tackle that thing back where it belongs!" The Spinarak reared back onto its hind legs, shooting a string of webbing towards Sindy, but the Cyndaquil managed to expertly hop to the side before charging straight at the spider, looking ready to respond with a tackle of its own. The two Pokémon collided, but Sindy was just a tad bit stronger, which sent the Spinarak tumbling backwards, landing on its back where it flailed its legs about.

"What was that Extrasensory thing...?" Melody asked, watching as Sindy had been settled to tackle instead of whatever the other move was that Christina had mentioned. "I think your dex might be busted, yeah?"

"No no, I had this battle earlier, we were just about to lose, but she created some kind of like... explosion, that won the battle! It said on the dex it's a Psychic attack, but..." She trailed off, scratching the side of her neck uncertainly.

"No matter, let's just finish this off and get out of here before more come!" Melody replied. She glanced back at her Chikorita and nodded. "Finish the last one off, Blossom! Use another Tackle!"

The Chikorita charged forward once more, aiming her sights on the last of the Spinarak. However, the Spinarak that had been targeted seemed to be ready not to share in the fate that fell upon the other three of its kind. A strange, fang-like dart shot out from the Spinarak's mouth, colliding right into Blossom as she was about to hit the spider. The little grass Pokemon staggered back. A slightly sickened-looking expression gracing the Chikorita's features.

"B-Blossom! What's wrong?!" Melody called out. The Chikorita only gave a somewhat whimpy sounding chirp in response, her little legs looking a bit shaky. Christina's eyes widened a little, a gasp escaping her. "Oh no! I think she's been poisoned!"

Melody quickly took off, running to the Chikorita's side. She completely ignored the fact that the last remaining Spinarak was closing in. "Blossom!"

If anything, Derpy seemed more on the ball than Blaine as he rushed forth, that same dark gleam in his eyes. He flew right past Melody and let out a malicious cry. The Spinarak tried to shoot out yet another dart, but it shattered against the Aqua Jet's force and the Spinarak's eyes widened in fear as the Totodile slammed right into it. Though that didn't seem to be enough as Derpy clamped his jaws around the bug and began to swing his head back and forth while sickening crunches were heard. The Totodile spat the bug out of his mouth and just like that the happy smile retured to his face as he danced about.

Blaine stared on, "Uh... maybe I did get the best mon..."

Christina was equally dumbfounded as she simply shared a little glance with Sindy, followed by a shudder and the hope that they didn't have to fight that... thing.

Melody however, was completely oblivious to the fact that the Totodile had more or less saved her and Blossom. Concern was written all over her fave as she held her Chikorita close, another sickly chirp escaping the plant Pokemon's mouth. Quickly, the short girl glanced up at both her friends.

"P-Please? An Antidote! One of you two have one on you, right?!" the girl pleaded.

"O-oh! Of course!" Christina fumbled with the little pouch by her left hip as she pulled out a little sprayer, hurrying over and kneeling down next to Melody and Blossom, with Sindy shuffling up next to Blossom, squeaking out a little worriedly. Christina raised the sprayer and proceeded to squeeze it lightly, a fine little spray of some sort of light-purple substance rained down over the Chikorita, dissolving as it hit the little Pokémon. "I... think that should do it."

A small smile came to both Melody and Blossom as the Pokemon began to feel better. Melody sighed in relief, still holding her Chikorita close. Blossom seemed to look quite thankful, partially because Christina had an Antidote to help her with the poisoning the Spinarak had caused, and partially because Melody risked herself coming to her aid when she needed it.

"Thank you so much, Chrissy..." Melody sighed in relief.

Smiling in equal relief, Christina put away the used antidote in the pouch by her hip, dusting off her hands with a bright smile as she stood up, Sindy squeaking out happily as well. "Heh, you're welcome, Mel'. It's what friends are for, right?"

As those two talked Blaine saw something catch his eye... the scene of Derpy seemingly chewing on something. He didn't fully trust the mon, but of course he didn't want him to accidentally eat a stick or something. He sighed and walked on over, kneeling down, "Come on, spit it out." He said as he held out his hand. The Totodile's mouth was bulging and he shook his head, his puffed out cheeks jiggling a bit as he did so. Blaine frowned and grabbed the lower jaw, trying to force open the water type's mouth.

"I'm your trainer! I said open up!" The Totodile fought on until finally the mouth opened and strange jewels seeped out. Before Blaine could move he felt something tighten around his hand. Derpy had his teeth against Blaine's skin and had a look in his eyes, something that signaled to Blaine that if he ever tried that again his hand would be forcibly removed. Then just like that the happiness returned to the 'dile's eyes and he danced about. He opened his jaws and held up a saliva covered crystal to Blaine who, not wanting to anger the Totodile again, gently grabbed it.

"Uh... where did you get this stuff?" Blaine asked as he looked down at the other crystal fragments. The Totodile stopped and stared at him with good natured eyes and resumed dancing and gurgling. Blaine sighed and got up, "Hm... several pieces. Might be worth something..."

"What might be worth something...?" Melody asked, giving Blaine a curious look.

Blaine shivered at the voice and forgot that no, he wasn't on his own. "Uh... stuff." He said off handedly. He quickly put his crystal into his pocket, "Stuff that Derpy found."

Now curious, Christina stepped over to him, mindful of not walking into the webs again, she knelt down besides him, her brows raising as she picked up the other two, oddly-shaped crystal fragments. "... Whoa. And... Derpy found these?" She held one of them up in front of her, tilting her head a little to the side, looking it over. "They're really pretty. Wonder what they are..." Turning her head a little, she smiled at Melody and tossed the final piece to her. "Mel', catch!"

Melody's eyes widened as the shard of crystal was tossed to her by Christina. Blossom quickly hopped out of the girl's arms as she attempted to catch it. The shard bouncing about in her hands before it bounced up and smacked her in the forehead. Melody let out a small groan as she reached down and picked the shard up, glancing at it curiously.

"Wait, where did these even come from...?" the girl asked. "Did those Spinarak have 'em or something?"

Blaine shrugged, "Not sure." He said. He looked at Derpy who was now rolling about in the dirt and quickly recalled him into his ball, "I think however-" He didn't get to finish his words as he looked up to see more Spinarak quickly moving down to them, no doubt angry at the treatment of their friends, "Uh... I think we should go, okay later!" He said quickly as he broke out into a run. "Get moving you two!" He shouted at the two females.

"H-huh?" Christina said, still kneeling and studying the shard in her hands as Blaine raised up and raced off at mach 2. She looked up and paled as she saw several more Spinarak as well as what could only be their six-times-as-large evolution, three of 'em none the less. And all of them looked very angry.

"I-I think that might be a good idea!" She scrambled to her legs, still clutching the crystal as she grabbed Sindy on the way, hugging the little Cyndaquil to her chest while darting after Blaine who was pretty much long gone by now.

"R-Run...? Run from what...?" Melody questioned.

The girl gave both of her friends a confused glance as they took off running. Slowly glancing up, her eyes widened at the sight of the oncoming spider Pokemon. Melody let out a loud squeal of fright as she fumbled about for a Pokeball, quickly calling Blossom back into it before she scrambled to her feet and took off running herself... in the opposite direction that both Blaine and Christina had run in. Not once did the smaller girl think to look back as she ran.

Hien Midori
Chapter 1
Route 30

The red haired boy took a deep breath, sucking in the cool morning air. It was a beautiful day in his opinion, and being out of the house made it so much sweeter. After all, he was officially a Pokémon Trainer now. He had an ID, and a Pokedex so kindly given to him by Professor Pine, and most importantly, he had Maura. The small Froakie was hopping by his side, doing her best to ignore him. Hien bit his lip, wondering what was with her. She seemed kind of serious, and a little quick tempered. After all, so far, she'd rejected all of his attempts to engage with her properly, only responding with a glare or a growl, and this concerned him a little. He didn't want to have a bad relationship with his first Pokémon at all. Or any of the ones he was yet to meet, for that matter.

They turned around a corner, and Hien stopped, finding himself facing the long expanse of all of Route 30. Here and there, he could see Pidgey's everywhere, along with a large variation of other species of Pokémon. It made Maura, in her ice blue colouration, seem slightly out of place. His green eyes glanced back down at her, recalling that when he'd been informed that he was to receive a Froakie as a starter, he'd expected a more vibrant hue. But, as the professor had explained, Maura was special. She was a "shiny" - a rare coloured Pokémon. She'd showed him some other Shiny Pokémon, ones with more dramatic changes in hue, to illustrate her point. They were kind of cool, being so unusual, but he did like the subtly that Maura had as well.

He glanced at her, then promptly crouched down next to his Pokémon - he really did need to try to engage her.

"Hey, um Maura?" He said, receiving a glare as a result. "Er well, I'm Hien okay? I'm your trainer and I'm really looking forwards to working with you and um well... Err I guess we're going to try and take on the Pokémon League, okay? Does that sound good to you?"

She stared directly at him the whole time, making Hien feel slightly uncomfortable, only to be offended when she laughed cruelly at the mention of taking on the League, almost as if she didn't think he was capable of something like that. He stood back up, turning away from her slightly, and allowing his hair to fall in front of his eyes, hiding in his own way from her. What had he done to make her act this way? They'd only been together for a short amount of time and she already seemed to think he was useless... Maybe he would just use her to help him catch another Pokémon, and then leave her with the Professor again...

Hien stopped brooding as he felt Maura tug on his jeans, pointing behind him. Quizzical, he turned around, only to spot Xuan walking towards him, seeming perfectly at ease. Beside him, his Elekid strutted. Upon seeing that his younger brother had spotted him, he raised one hand in greeting. Hien raised a hand half heartedly back - he really didn't want to talk to him right now, not when he couldn't seem to get Maura to want to work with him.

"Hey Bro!" Xuan grinned as he approached. "Glad to see you've got yourself a good looking 'mon there!" He pointed to Maura, who seemed slightly flattered by that.

"Oh, um," Hien stuttered, "Er this is Maura, she's a Froakie."

His brother laughed, "I knew that. I may not have a Pokedex, but I'm not stupid yeah? Well, Hien, you already know Raiden, but Maura, allow me to introduce my Elekid, Raiden! He's a real go-getter, in my personal opinion."

Maura looked at the Elekid sceptically, who gave her a suggestive wink. This only resulted in her narrowing his eyes, then turning so she didn't have to look at Raiden. The Elekid seemed incredibly amused by her reaction.

"Ah, doesn't seem like they get along." Xuan mused, and shrugged. "Oh well! So anyway Bro, I was wondering if you wanted to have a battle? Seeing as this is the start of both of our adventures, we might as well have a battle while we're both total noobs yeah?"

Hien's eyes widened, glancing at Raiden. "Um, but that wouldn't be fair at all, really. 'cause er, Raiden has a huge type advantage over Maura, and I don't want her to get hur- OW!" He yelped, as Maura had punched his leg, and ignored his obvious pain and displeasure at that by hopping in front of him, cracking her knuckles.

Xuan laughed at that, "I guess Maura wants to have a go huh? Well, I'd hate to deny her the pleasure, so, Raiden, use Quick Attack!"

Suddenly, his brothers Pokémon became a yellow blur, as he raced forwards and slammed his fist into Maura's face, causing her to yelp in pain. Hien called out to her, wondering if she was okay, and crouched next to her, trying to see if she was in too much pain. She slapped him away angrily, seeming to be insulted by his concern for her. He jumped back a little, slightly unsure of what to do.

"Hey, Bro, its your turn - command Maura to attack! Don't worry about her - Pokémon are pretty tough creatures, and battling is in their blood - she'll be fine." Xuan reassured him.

"Um, okay..." Hien's eyes flicked up, as he tried to remember exactly what moves Professor Pine had said Maura knew. In his head, he summoned up an image of the paper which she'd written on, listing the moves and their effects. There weren't many, and none of them would do a lot of damage to the Elekid, however, some had some interesting abilities that could come in handy, especially since he remembered that while Elekid was faster than Froakie, the difference in speed wasn't huge.

"Maura, use, um bubble." He commanded.

The Froakie glanced at him weirdly, probably because the attack wasn't very effective against an electric type, but complied, and created a bunch of bubbles in each hand, before hurling them towards Raiden like they were weapons. Most of them popped upon contact, but a couple, near his feet, stuck to him, and also to the ground. The Elekid seemed less than pleased to have noticed this, as when he tried to take a step, the bubbles clung to the ground, making it far more difficult for him to move. His small eyes found Maura, and glared at her, the dislike between the two intensifying.

"Huh, clever." Xuan gave him a nod, as if to acknowledge a well made, but unexpected move. "Too bad Raiden doesn't need to move to attack. Thundershock!"

At the command, Raiden raised his hands, and a spark appeared between his two horns, quickly getting brighter so that they glowed blue. Hien froze - a supereffective attack would probably knock his Pokémon out. What, what did he do? He couldn't lower the accuracy - Maura didn't know any moves that could do that, nor anything to protect herself with. That moment spent panicking wasted his chance to actually do anything about the incoming attack, and thus a small bolt of electricity sparked from the Elekid's clawed hands to Maura. Her body jerked as the volt sparked through her, before collapsing, smoke hissing off her body.

"Maura!" Hien cried, crouching by her side. She appeared unconscious, having been knocked out. "What- What do we do?"

"Calm down Bro." Xuan approached, pulling out a small, diamond shaped item, which he slipped into Maura's mouth, forcing her to swallow it. "I've got it covered."

As the item went down her throat, Maura stirred, opening her eyes suddenly. She got back on her legs, seeming not at full health, but she was a lot better than she had been previously. Xuan reached out, to help her off the ground, while behind him, Raiden laughed at her. Seeming perfectly calm, she accepted Xuan's hand, but the second she was up, she bolted over to the surprised Elekid, and proceeded to pound him with her fist, a vicious expression on her face.

Raiden toppled over, unconscious, while Maura stood over him, triumphant. Both of the brother's stared at her in disbelief, before Xuan laughed aloud, running his fingers through his hair.

"Well, you sure have a feisty one huh? I don't even know if I won the battle or not now..."

Hien shrugged, still slightly shocked. "Errr, I think you did - you knocked my Pokémon out first..."

"Eh, no idea." Xuan stood up, and pulled out a Pokeball, recalling his fainted Pokémon. "I don't have another Revive on me, so I guess I'll just walk back and find a Pokémon Centre huh? Don't worry about giving me a cash prize for winning - we don't have a clear winner after all! I'll catch up with you later Bro!" He walked off in the direct he'd come, then paused, and turned back to face his brother.

"Just a suggestion, Bro. You need to think fast on your feet in battling - getting all freaked out by a Super Effective attack will put you at a disadvantage. Because you could have won that battle outright if you hadn't frozen up. After all, Raiden went down after one Pound from Maura, and his speed was reduced, so it was highly unlikely that he would have been able to move before she did. Just food for thought. See ya."

Hien watched his brother's back moving away, before sagging, releasing his breath. That wasn't exactly how he'd hoped his first battle would have gone really, and judging by his Froakie's expression, she was less than impressed with him. He shrugged helplessly.

"I'm... I'm kinda new to this okay? I'll improve Maura, I promise."

She just sighed, and turned away from him, walking further along Route 30. Hien gritted his teeth together, and followed her, his hands in tight fists, feeling his fingernails digging into his skin. He had to get better than this - He needed to.

***

Hien plonked himself down on the ground, resting against a rock. They'd been walking for a fair while, and frankly, he was getting kinda hungry. He pulled his green backpack off himself, and dug around it, searching for a sandwich he'd made that morning. He was pretty sure there was also a bit of Pokémon food in there, for Maura. Maybe that would make her hate him less? He sure hoped so - he had no idea how he was going to manage with a Pokémon so adamant about ignoring him. Within the bag, he felt his hand connect to a package. Pulling his arm out, he found that he had found the Pokémon food.

"Hey! Maura!" He called to the Froakie, who had been sitting slightly away from him, continuing with her silent treatment of her trainer. "I've got some food for you - are you hungry?"

She turned her head slowly, eyeing him with suspicion. For a moment, he thought she wouldn't come over, but to his surprise, she slowly hopped over, as if expecting it to be a trap. While she was taking her time to fully scout out for any surprise pitfalls he might have somehow placed, Hien pulled out his sandwich, and unwrapped it, taking a bite. Maura, having decided there was nothing to fear, picked up a piece of Pokémon food, and nibbled at it suspiciously. Almost instantly, she spat it out, and threw the piece she'd had away, and started to eye Hien's sandwich with interest.

"Hey, the sandwich is mine okay?" He placed it on the rock beside him, and reached out to the Pokémon food, holding it out to Maura. "Come on, it can't be that bad."

She rolled her eyes at him, and then widened them in alarm, pointing towards the Sandwich. Hien glanced at it, only to find that it wasn't there anymore. He jumped up, looking for where it had gone, only to spot a Sentret bouncing away from them on its tail as fast as it could. In its little paws, the Pokémon held the sandwich.

"H-Hey!" Hien yelled after it, causing its ears to prick up. "That's mine!" Its response was to flee faster. Maura took after it, bounding as quickly as she could, and after a split second decision, Hien grabbed his bag and ran too.

The little creature was honestly kind of slow, and couldn't really keep ahead of the determined Froakie. Upon realising that the water type was about to steal its stolen lunch, it used its tail to bounce up into the branches of a nearby tree. Maura stopped under it, and found that she couldn't jump high enough to reach one of the lower branches. With a growling stomach being his primary motivation, Hien took what could have been a dramatic stance, one finger pointing at the spot where the Sentret had disappeared into the foliage.

"Maura, use Acrobatics to get up into the tree!"

She gave him a quick, almost approving glance, and her feet and palms glowed white. She sprung upwards, catching the tree branch with ease, and swung herself up higher up, disappearing into the leaves. He waited for a moment, and then heard a high pitched squeal, promptly followed by the Sentret being kicked out of the tree. It landed at Hien's feet, and Maura dropped down next to it, holding the sandwich triumphantly in her hands. He smiled, and then held his hand out expectantly, waiting for her to deposit the sandwich there. She held it close to her, giving him a glare, before finally sighing, and then threw it in Hien's face. He pulled the sandwich off him, trying not to flinch or anything, as that would have made the situation more hilarious for the Froakie, was was visibly laughing at him. He gave her a playful glare, then glanced down at the Sentret.

It had curled up in a ball, wrapping its tail around itself, and seemed to whimper slightly as its stomach growled. Hien could feel pity for it rising within himself, and before he knew it, he'd taken half of the sandwich and offered it to the small brown Pokémon. Its nose wiggled, and it eyes the half sandwich suspiciously for a moment, before its eyes lit up and it happily accepted the gift. One of Maura's eyes twitched, and she looked ready to pound her trainer again for giving away what she'd gone to all that trouble to retrieve. Mentally mourning the loss of his sandwich, Hien held out the other half to the Froakie, who blinked in surprise, as if she never expected him to offer it to her. She took it, and looked kind of guilty, then ripped it in half, and offered part of it back to Hien.

He smiled at her, and accepted. "Thanks, Maura."

She gave him a half smile back, then promptly punched his leg, as if to remind him that she still thought he was useless. He cringed, mentally reminding himself that he was probably going to have to get used to this. Hopefully she grew out if it before she got any stronger.

Once they'd finished eating, Hien stood up, zipping up his backpack. "Alright, time to go now Maura."

The Froakie got to her feet, and the two of them started to walk away, only to find the Sentret jump into their path, looking at them pleadingly. It took a moment for Hien to get what it was asking, and then it clicked.

"Oh! Do you want to come with us?"

The Sentret nodded happily, jumping up and down at the idea. Hien laughed, and pulled out a Pokeball, then pressed it the the Sentret's head. It disappeared in a flash of light, and the ball wiggled three times, before laying still. He then released the normal type, which promptly threw itself at his face, hugging him. He laughed, and pulled it off, sitting it on the ground. The trio started walking again, Hien knowing that he was definitely on the right path to get to the Dark Cave Pokémon Centre. He glanced towards his Pokémon. Maura seemed to be cringing at how over-the-top excitable the newcomer seemed to be, and he kind of agreed with her - this one was over the top.

"Oh well, at least it doesn't hate me." He thought to himself, as the continued towards their destination.

chapter 2 ; ROUTE 31

Spoiler:
You will travel Route 31 from east to west, starting by the Pokémon Center near Dark Cave. Dark Cave is off limits for now, because of a recent cave-in that is still being investigated. Route 31 is filled with farmlands and flower fields, and it feels like you are going upwards, knowing the beautiful Violet City lies ahead. Farmers and their feisty kids are likely to be encountered here.

Likely, traversing Route 30 took a full day so you can either write about spending the night in the center at the beginning of chapter 2, or just mention it. It's unadvised to sleep outdoors without a proper tent or other form of shelter.

Weather - SUNNY

1) Oops, you trampled, burned or otherwise destroyed some crops. Or maybe just just happened to be in the vicinity when another player did that. The farmer won't listen to reason and blames you all blindly though, so you will have to help him out with something on the farm. Afterwards, his wife is thankful for the help though, and gives you one REVIVE each as a thanks. The crops will grow back anyways. REVIVES are very rare as they are not sold in conventional stores.

2) Someone has stolen a Victreebel from a farmer! Search for them in the direction the farmer points. You will discover that the culprits are a couple of people in peculiar suits... Get the stolen GREAT BALL containing Victreebel back from them! As a reward you will each receive a young pokémon as a gift from the farmer. It's one of the species that live naturally on Route 31, but this one knows an egg move!

3) In this chapter too, you are free to skip the events and just move about your own pace and story.

Melody Hughes

Chapter 1 - Route 30

After The Escape

Melody was not sure how long she had been running for. The trainer did not dare to stop or look back as she moved as fast as her feet could carry her, out of fear that the Spinarak and Ariados would manage to catch up to her and her friends. At the pace that Melody ran, it did not take long for the girl to finally make it out of the wooded area that the spider Pokemon had made their home in. As the warm light of the sun became visible again, Melody gradually slowed down. Her face was quite flushed, as she was quite sure that she had never sprinted that fast before in her life.

"That was insane..." Melody huffed, taking a seat on the grass to rest her legs for a moment. A small smile made its way to the girl's lips. "Well... At least we got away okay... Still, if bug Pokemon act like that all the time, I can totally see why you're scared of 'em, Chrissy..."

Melody waited for her red haired friend to respond with her usual remark that she was not afraid of bug Pokemon. However, all that Melody was replied with was the sound of silence. Slowly standing up, the girl spun around and looked behind her. Her smile slowly dropping as she did so. There was no sign of Christina. There was no sign of Blaine. This caused the girl to feel quite confused, as she was fairly sure that the trio had all taken off together when the spider Pokemon decided to take revenge for their friends. Slowly, Melody walked towards the entrance to the wooded area. She peeked her head inside and looked around carefully.

"...Blaine? Chrissy?" Melody called out, biting her bottom lip. Much as she had feared, there was no response or sign of the other two trainers. "Oh no... W-What if they tripped or something while they were running? What if those spiders got 'em all wrapped up in their webs and drug them back deeper into the woods so they could drink their blood like the two of them were just some kind of human-shaped juice box?!"

Melody took a step back from the entrance of the wooded area. She realized that she was just being silly. There was no way that her two friends had not made it out of there okay. Melody took another step away from the wooded area, before turning and looking around. She spotted a nearby path, the sight of which brought her smile back. At the very least, it looked like she managed to find her way back to the main road of Route 30.

"Guess I'll just follow the path this time," Melody decided. "With any luck, it'll lead me to Violet City."

With her choice decided, Melody resumed her journey along Route 30. Not really wanting to journey alone just yet, the girl released Blossom from her Pokeball once more. The Chikorita chirped happily, seeming quite pleased that she and her trainer were no longer be in the wooded area and back on the main path. Melody gave Blossom a warm smile as she followed behind it, her mind still wandering a bit.

"I really do hope those two are okay..." she thought with a sigh. "I mean, the way we more or less got chased out of there was so sudden... And Blaine's Totodile is a bit of an odd one. I hope he managed to keep him safe..."

Glancing up as she walked, Melody spotted a Pokemon Center coming into view. While it was not part of Violet City, the girl had to admit that maybe making a small rest stop along the way probably was not a bad idea. She looked down at Blossom, who seemed to be thinking the same thing. A big smile on her little mouth as she hopped about some what anxiously. Melody could not help, but giggle at the sight.

"Okay, okay... Let's grab a quick rest, then we can finish up our walk to Violet City," the girl told her Chikorita.

Blossom nodded and chirped happily at the girl. Unfortunately, it did not look like it was going to be a simple walk to the Pokemon Center. No sooner had Melody made her choice did a small boy come running out of the building and towards the girl. He was wearining a pair of yellow shorts with a light blue t-shirt covering his torso. He had somewhat messy brown hair which was kept under his blue hat that he wore backwards. Melody watched as the boy ran right up to them. His smile getting wider with every step.

"Um... Can I help ya with something?" Melody asked, giving the boy a curious look as he stopped just in front of her.

The boy took a Pokeball that had been resting on his waist with glee. "Yep! You could help me to a Pokemon battle!"

"Well... so much for that break..." Melody thought. She glanced down at her Chikorita, wondering if Blossom would be up for a battle considering all she had been through already today. However, the Pokemon seemed quite anxious herself, almost as if she was just as eager as the boy was. Giving a small smile to Blossom, Melody nodded. "Alright, you're on!"

The boy pumped his fist with glee, letting out a small cheer at Melody's agreement. Tossing his Pokeball into the air, the capsule opened up to release a Ledyba. Curiously, Melody took her Pokedex and aimed it at the Ledyba, wanting to get a bit more information about the Pokemon Blossom would be facing in battle.

"Ledyba, the Five Star Pokémon. These naturally gentle Bug-types gather in groups during cold weather to keep warm." the handheld device told her in a mechanical sounding, female voice.

"Great, more bugs... Well, he doesn't look as dangerous as Spinarak, so I guess it'll be okay," Melody thought. With a nod, she put her Pokedex away. "Alright, Blossom! Let's get ready!"

Blossom chirped in agreement, giving the Ledyba a determined look. The boy and his bug Pokemon seemed ready too. His anxious smile was just as broad as ever and the Ledyba was buzzing in circles. Melody herself could not help, but feel a bit anxious herself. After all, this was her first battle against another trainer. Taking a deep breath, the girl began.

"Alright, Blossom! Tackle it, quick!" Melody shouted.

Blossom chriped in agreement. The Chikorita took off charging towards the Ledyba. The boy quickly ordered his Ledyba to follow through with the same attack. Ledyba charged forward straight towards Blossom. The two Pokemon crashed into each other, causing both of them to bounce back in surprise at each other's strength.

"Tackle it again, Blossom!" Melody ordered.

Blossom once again took off towards the Ledyba. Unlike last time however, the boy did not give his bug Pokemon a command right away. Rather, he waited until Blossom was right in front of the Ledyba, before ordering it to dodge it to the side and then tackle into it once more. Blossom let out a squeal of surprise as the Ledyba plowed into her, causing her to skid off to the side. The Chikorita slowly picked herself up on her feet, giving the Ledyba a rather nasty looking glare.

Not wasting a single moment, the boy ordered his Ledyba to tackle the Chikorita again. Melody's eyes widened as the Ledyba charged forward. She quickly fished her Pokedex back out, scanning Blossom quickly. A small smirk suddenly came to Melody's lips as she glanced back at her Pokemon. Chikorita seemed a bit nervous as she glanced over at Melody, wondering why the trainer had yet to give her a command. Melody gave Blossom a reassuring smile as the Ledyba got right in front of her.

"Now Blossom, Razor Leaf!" Melody commanded.

The Chikorita chirped in response, letting loose a storm of sharp leaves in the direction of the bug Pokemon. The Ledyba was quite surprised as the leaves cut into it. Realizing that this was her chance, Melody quickly followed up with another command.

"Quick, Blossom! Finish it off with another Tackle!" she shouted.

The Chikorita charged forward as told, her body colliding right into the Ledyba. The bug Pokemon fell to the ground, rolling towards its trainer. Slowly, the bug Pokemon tried to get back up, but it was not able to. It fainted on the spot, letting out a weak cry in response. Melody cheered happily as Blossom ran to her, hopping up into the girl's arms. The boy sighed as he called his Ledyba back into its Pokeball, before giving it a soft smile.

"You did well. Take a nice rest," he told it. He then glanced up at Melody, giving the girl a smile as well. "You were pretty good too. I hope I get to battle you again someday!"

Melody gave the boy a smile and a nod. "You too! You and your Ledyba were pretty strong!"

After parting ways with the boy, Melody resumed her walk to the Pokemon Center. She glanced down at the Chikorita in her arms with a smile. Blossom let out a small, tired sounding yawn. Giving the Chikorita a small hug, the duo entered the Pokemon Center.

"Good job, today..." Melody told Blossom. "Let's get you fixed up, and then you can take a nice rest."

Blaine - Route 31

Blaine kept on running and running until by some sheer coat of luck he ended up back on the road. He panted a bit and then proceeded to get the various leaves off of him. He waited a bit, but no one came out after him. He had always heard his father say that if you were ever cornered by an Ursaring, have a buddy with you. Just push your buddy down and the Ursaring will get him instead of you. It was a cheap tactic, but if it ensured your own survival then that was paramount. He supposed his father was right after all. None of the bugs had come after him, which meant they had another more helpless target to abuse. He didn't ENJOY the fact that one of the girls possibly was being beat up by now, but he also hadn't wanted to die. Like he said, he didn't enjoy the fact that someone possibly died for him in there, but at the same time he couldn't say he felt like dropping to the ground and sobbing with agony that ached from the deepest recesses of his heart. He hadn't even known those girls and if you were a traveling trainer... well, he assumed stuff like this COULD happen.

He began to move along the route and glanced down at Derpy's pokeball. A psychotic Totodile on his team... it wasn't that bad of a choice now that he thought about it. He was strong enough and seemed to love to battle while still being just in general a happy mon. As long as he didn't force open Derpy's mouth again then he could see this working out... to an extent. If he really was psychotic then would he have to be taken to someone to see if that anger could be taken away? Perhaps a better question was why Professor Pine was giving away psychotic pokemon? Well, the others really hadn't shown the same symptoms Derpy did, so was it possible he was the only one that had been given away who was like this? Well, that meant he had a sort of trick for his battling didn't he now? Just let his opponent's think Derpy was carefree, then let him unleash his anger and bam, instant win.

It wasn't long before he got to a pokemon center and night was already hitting the area. He walked on in and managed to get a room. Much better than sleeping outside in his opinion. The night itself was very uneventful, though as morning came the sunlight hit him through his window forcing his drowsy mind to start awakening. As he began to roll over to the side he felt a weight on his chest. His eyes barely opened, but he saw Derpy right there. The Totodile was leaning over Blaine with that same old smile on his face, but he wasn't gurgling or jumping around in joy. He simply stared...

Blaine didn't know why, but he had a sinking feeling in his chest, one that told him the Totodile was doing this for a specific reason. Derpy continued to stare and then got off and jumped to the ground, happily gurgling yet again. Blaine sighed and finally got up from his bed and looked down at the Totodile who running around in place.

"Derpy... as usual." He muttered. He was rather tired from last night, so he figured a quick shower was in order and as he came out his eyes widened in surprise. Derpy must have had a field day as most of the room seemed to be covered in either drool or was gnawed to death by those jaws. Derpy himself turned around as he chewed on the complimentary alarm clock and fell silent. Blaine just stared on and facepalmed. Hard.

Derpy just stared for a moment and then continued chewing on the clock. Blaine himself quickly made his way over the Totodile and as he reached for the clock that same look passed Derpy's eyes. The one he had given Blaine while in the forest. Blaine stopped dead in his tracks and slowly began to back away. Derpy was silent for a bit longer and as he saw Blaine stepping even further away a bemused look covered his face and he happily continued chewing on the clock.

Blaine grabbed his pack and was more than thankful that Derpy had chewed his own things to ribbons. Derpy himself saw what Blaine was doing and he spit out the clock while still having a large smile on his face. Blaine quickly returned him and slowly opened his door, peeking out before quickly getting out and closing the door as fast as he could behind him. He quickly moved along the hallway and was soon out of the center in a heartbeat. Well, that was one place he couldn't return to again. He hoped the nurse wouldn't be that mad with the room.

The weather was bright and sunny, which meant that it was also warm as well. It was a nice change from the darkness of the forest that was for sure. He made a mental note to himself NOT to step into a forest again. Blaine however was drawn out of his thoughts as Derpy's pokeball shuddered and the Totodile himself popped out with a happy cry. Blaine blinked in surprise as the Totodile danced about. Had he gotten a defective pokeball? Was there even such a thing? Blaine grabbed his ball and once more returned Derpy. As soon as the mon was returned the ball burst open again, this time with the Totodile looking a tad annoyed. Blaine gritted his teeth and tried one more time and yet again it burst open with a now angry expression on the Totodile's face. As he readied another try the Totodile let out a very low, but also threatening growl.

Blaine found his muscles freezing up as the Totodile's eyes glowed a deep red. Blaine found himself quickly taking a few steps back and finally lowering the ball. At that the Totodile's smile returned and he began to hop about excitedly in place. Blaine shakily reached into his pocket and flicked out his pokedex. "Oh… Leer." He glanced back at Derpy who was just having a ball of fun rolling around in the dirt on the road. Blaine sighed softly and began to move forward experimentally. Thankfully Derpy wasn't against this as he stayed by Blaine's side and began to move his arms as if he was marching in an army.

He had heard of dominant pokemon before, but this was ridiculous! Being bossed around by a being who was so short that Blaine could probably squish him if he so much as stepped on him. Were the other mon like this as well? Were they bossing around their own trainers or was Derpy just defective? He would have kept on walking, but Derpy stopped and suddenly began to gurgle out happily.

Blaine glanced over near a small flower field off to the side of the road and after a while he saw something move about. Derpy let out a happy cry and pointed over at it excitedly, so Blaine wasn't sure if the Totodile wanted to dance with it or fight it. Suddenly a purple face poked out from the flowers and a light squeak came from the Rattata. Blaine looked down at Derpy and nodded, "Well, maybe you'll listen to me here? Derpy, try a… hm, ah, try a Water Gun!" He cried out.

The Totodile took in a deep breath as water foamed around the edges of his mouth. He then opened his jaws as a stream of water was flung out right at the little rat who squeaked out with pain. Water dripped off the rat's face, but he was just as quickly to rush up to Derpy and slammed into him. Blaine looked down at his dex and frowned, "A… quick attack. Okay, Aqua Jet!" The Totodile growled angrily at the hit and his body was quickly covered with a light coat of water. He jumped out and flew right at the wild mon, crying out as he slammed right into the Rat's face. The Totodile finished his attack and jumped back a bit. The Rattata fell and twitched on the ground while Derpy jumped about happily.

"So… that's when you listen huh? Battle only?" The Totodile turned and stared at him with a wide smile. "I guess it's better than nothing." Blaine commented with a shrug. "Okay, I can deal with this." He looked around the fields again, "So… I guess more battles?" He asked his mon. The Totodile danced about and let out happy gurgles. Blaine chuckled a bit, "Yeah, you're Derpy alright."

Surprisingly despite the Totodile's earlier energy he seemed to calm down after that battle. He just looked about idly while he walked alongside Blaine, though he still had that derpy smile on his face. Blaine and Derpy soon began to pass by small farms here and there, one in particular had a young kid near the fence and as he saw Blaine coming the boy jumped the fence and quickly blocked the road, "Hey! You're a pokemon trainer!"

Blaine stopped and nodded, "Uh… yeah I am."

The boy puffed out his chest, "I am too! Say, want to have a battle? I'm pretty bored today after all."

Blaine glanced down at Derpy who looked up at him with that same old smiling face. Hm… well, he figured it couldn't hurt. Better to fight a younger kid than a full blown trainer at least. "Well, sure, I guess."

The boy grinned and whistled loudly, "Tailow! Come on girl!"

There was a loud chirp as a bird that had been seated on a roof flew on over and landed before the boy. The Tailow let out a sharp cry and spread her wings as she flapped up into the air once more. Derpy was already showing initiative as he came forward with that same happy smile on his face.

"Alright Tailow use Focus Energy!" The boy commanded. The Tailow flew about and cried out softly, a yellowish glow briefly enveloping her body while her eyes remained on Derpy. The Totodile glanced up with his maw wide open. He wasn't already moving to attack so Blaine figured the water type was waiting for his command. "Derpy, go and use Aqua Jet!"

"Derpy? That's his name?" The boy laughed, "What a joke!"

Derpy lifted off the ground as his body was covered with a coat of water that helped to shoot him up into the air. The Tailow grunted as Derpy slammed into her, but as his protective water coat faded the boy shouted out for his mon to use Peck. The Tailow obliged and jabbed her sharp beak into his exposed abdomen. The only thing that the bird didn't see coming was the Totodile in turn opening his jaws and snapped them around one of her flapping wings.

The Tailow let out a cry of surprise and pain as she tried to keep in the air, but with one wing that was quite impossible and both began to fall toward the ground. Blaine watched as they got closer and closer with the Tailow trying desperately to break free from the iron jaws. It wasn't fated to be as both slammed into the ground and a small dirt cloud was kicked up. As the dust cleared a weary Derpy rose up. He seemed out of it and swayed from side to side. The Tailow however laid on the ground with spirals in her eyes. Derpy huffed and puffed as the other boy rushed over and picked up the downed bird.

"Man, your Totodile is tough! You must have trained it a lot!" Blaine glanced down at Derpy and shrugged, "You could say that…"

"Well, thanks for the battle mister! At least it's more exciting than the other stuff out here." He patted his Tailow on the head and crossed over the fence yet again. Blaine pulled off his pack and pulled out a potion. "Hey, you did good. Thought on your feet and all." He sprayed the healing solution on his injured mon who squirmed at the stinging sensation. "Well, at least you aren't derpy in battle."

The Totodile gurgled a bit and pulled away once his trainer was done. "Hey, Derpy!" Blaine cried out as he began to chase his Totodile, "Get back here!" The water type just gurgled happily as he ran ahead, every so often prancing up into the air as his irritated trainer wondered just how long he could run for.

Christina Langley – Somewhere in the forest!
Chapter 1: A new 'friend'

The thought of the spiders slowly gaining on Christina and her Cyndaquil only spurred the girl to run even faster, ignoring anything in the way. She ducked under branches, lept over a log or two, and even managed to scare the living daylight out of a couple of Pinecos, whom then promptly fell out of their tree and into a bush. It wasn't until after about ten minutes of near non-stop sprinting that the girl slowly came to a stumbling stop in a little clearing, the sun now shining down through the open treetops, which was quite a relief when compared to the darker area of the woods back then.

Lowering herself onto her knees, Chris' was panting heavily, trying to regain her breath after her sprint, so exhausted by now that she didn't even care if the spiders were right behind her. She needed a break. In her arms, the tightly clutched Cyndaquil let out a small, squeaky protest as Chris' subconsciously squeezed the little 'mon tightly at the thought of what would have happened if they had stayed.

"O-oh, sorry Sindy…" she mumbled and lowered the Cyndaquil onto the ground, where it shook its body a little before wandering around Chris' to scout around, her pointy nose lifting into the air to take a whiff. Chris' slowly sat down on her rear with her legs stretched out in front of her, placing her hands behind her with her square, shoulder-strapped back laying besides her. She took in another couple of deep breaths of air before looking around, ready to discuss what had just happened with her new friends, but ended up blinking in surprise as she couldn't find neither Blaine nor Melody.

She frowned lightly, somewhat disappointed with herself that she managed to lose track of them, even if they –were- running from, probably poisonous, deadly spiders. She gave it a brief bit of thought before shaking her head, glancing down at Sindy, who waddled back to Chris', looking rather worried.
"… They'll be alright Sindy, trust me. Melody seemed like a… pretty capable trainer, and Blaine has that… uhm, crazy, psycho-mon, so I doubt he'll get into trouble anytime soon." She smiled and lowered a hand to gently pet her friend. "For now, let's worry about us. Speaking of…"

She raised her left hand, looking over the strange crystal fragment that she'd been clutching up until now, and only just remembered she was holding. It was kind of jagged and pointy… it looked very pretty, but she had no idea what it was. "Hmh. Maybe I can find someone who knows about this sort of stuff." She shrugged and opened her bag to place the crystal down there, but as she reached into it, her brows furrowed in confusion. She felt something… squishy, even something a little bit pointy. She hadn't brought anything like that. Only potions, a lunch, antidotes and the like. Pulling the bag into her lap, she flipped the flap completely open to take a look at it herself, but as she did, her eyes slowly widened.

A piercing scream erupted through the forest, sending a couple of Sentret bolting in the opposite direction from their hiding places. Sindy squeaked out worriedly as she watched the little Spinarak hurriedly skittering away from the panicked, red-haired girl, whom had cleanly thrown her bag off of her shoulder and onto the ground, staring at the small spider with wide eyes and a pale face. "Y-you little…! Wha- h-how did you get into my bag?! What were you doing in there?!" She shouted, a look of utter fury in her expression. The little spider, standing at a relatively safe distance watching her tantrum, reared onto its two hind legs while flailing the others a little about while making little clicking noises with its mandibles, as if telling a story. Sindy tilted her head, standing besides Chris' while watching the spider, but Christina wasn't amused.

"What the HELL-" She picked up a potion from the pile of items scattered from her throwing of her bag, chucking it at the spider, which sailed over its head and landed on the ground further away. "- do you think you're doing-" She picked up an antidote and threw it towards it as well, the Spinarak quickly sidestepping. "- sneaking into a girl's-" She grabbed the crystal shard and threw it at the little spider, which hit its rear, sending it stumbling a little to the side. "Private belongings?!" Her face flushed in anger, the girl grabbed another item at random and threw it as hard as she could, letting out a "HAH!" as she hit the spider square on the forehead.

Her victorious grin quickly turned into a gaping mouth as she watched on in terror. The item she had thrown was a Pokéball, and the spider was sucked into it, the ball landing on the dirt as it started wobbling. "… N-no! No, don't do that! Get out of there!" She scrambled to her legs and ran over to the ball, landing on her knees with her Cyndaquil running up besides her, flailing her little arms in an attempt at calming her down. The ball gave a shake, then another, and finally a third. A small whimper escaped Chris' as the ball clicked and the spider had been caught.

Already on her knees, she dropped to her arms as well, letting out an overly-dramatic little sob. "… Why me?" Taking a deep breath to calm herself down, she moved up to sit down on her rump again, crossing her legs over each other while staring down at the ball with her lips pressed together, drumming her fingers on her thigh, with Sindy looking from her, to the ball and back. After about a minute of thinking, she spoke. "… It's not like I –have- to use every Pokémon I catch. I mean… maybe someone else wants it? I might be able to trade for a really cool Pokémon."

She gave a hopeful little glance down at the Cyndaquil by her side, Sindy quickly looking away from her trainer, as if not wanting to get her hopes up of trading a common spider-Pokémon for something 'cool'. Undeterred, Chris' broke out in a smile and picked up the ball, bouncing it in her hand. "Well, in either case, we made it out alright. Besides, I technically didn't catch it, it caught itself, so…" She shrugged, and started picking up her stuff, placing them back in her bag, which she proceeded to sling over her shoulder, the bag resting on the hip opposite it. She punched her glove-clad fist into her other hand's palm with a determined nod and a smile down at the Cyndaquil. "Okay, no more distractions. It's starting to get late, and I can almost –taste- both mine and your lunch." The Cyndaquil's eyes widened at the sound of food, happily jumping a little on the spot, but Chris' gave a little grin down at her.

"… No food until we reach the Pokémon Center. For either of us." Sindy's cheerful mood was quickly shot down as she simply stared up at Chris' in disbelief, looking like a kid that had just been given an amazing gift for Christmas, then promptly slapped across the face and had the gift taken away. "Think of it as part of our training. We have to get tough, right? Well, we can't get tough if we're sitting around eating all the time!" Chris' retorted, kneeling down to pat Sindy on the head again. The Cyndaquil reluctantly squeaked out and nodded her head. "Alright, it's settled, then. And the faster we get there, the faster we'll get food, so let's go!"

With another bright smile on her lips, Chris' stood up, watching as Sindy sniffed the air, seemingly catching the scent of something, before proceeding to run off towards the edge of the clearing. Christina snickered before running after her friend, following her through the bushes. Not long after, the two came out onto the road again, and as the sun was starting to set behind the crown of trees, they managed to spot the Pokémon Center at the very end of the road. They both came to a stop, a small breeze of wind moving past them, playing briefly with Chris' hair before moving on. She glanced down at her companion with a warm smile. She really felt the two had bonded a lot already, and it had already been an entire day. She was still curious about her new friend, but in the end, she could almost feel how the Cyndaquil wanted to improve and prove herself, almost as much as Chris' herself did. Her smile twisted into a grin as she suddenly broke into a dash towards the center. "First one there gets the sandwich I've got!" at which point Sindy raced onwards, quickly overtaking Chris' on their way towards a meal and a nice, long night's rest.

Aberdeen & Nathan
chapter 1 : Route 30

Aberdeen wrinkled his nose. "You reckon that's him snoring?" he commented on the strange pulsating noises, which were much more obvious now that they were just outside the little cave by the lake.

"Maybe..." Nate mumbled. He slowly crept up to the entrance of the cave and peeked in. He couldn't see anything, so he turned back to Ab. "It's pitch black inside. If we run into him, how would we even fight?" He looked down to Fang-Lin, who was anxiously waiting for the next move. I wonder...

"Simple. We lure him out into the light instead, where he's outnumbered!" Aberdeen said with another grin and stepped up to the entrance before Nate could stop him. "OHAAI LOUDRED, YOU'RE A COWARD!" Nate stumbled back and and almost fell backwards from surprise.

Silence. The noises stopped for a moment. Chespin facepalmed, but then steeled himself. Fang-Lin hid behind Nate while Poliwag didn't even seem to notice. Ab's heart started pounding harder. Thrill. Just what he was looking for on his adventure. Right there and then, he didn't really think about what Nate might think of this plan.

Nate, however, was thinking about how much he wanted to let his temper flare towards Ab, but he was able to contain himself. He had wanted to get to the Loudred carefully, but all caution was thrown to the wind at this point.

Suddenly, a rumbling roar shot towards them from the blackness.

Poliwag let out a Water Sport attack in fear, splashing drops of water in all directions. Fang-Lin yipped in annoyance at the tadpole Pokemon.

Nate wiped the water off of his face and scrambled to his feet as a creature exploding with anger and noise bounded out of the cavern.

"ANG-OOR-AAAHHG!" the Loudred roared.

Recklessly, Chespin immediately threw himself towards the monster in a Tackle attack, without Ab's order. The move hit Loudred in its belly, but it merely grimaced before bouncing the grass pokémon back onto the ground.

"He's a bulky one!" Ab observed, hopping backwards while shaking drops of Water Sport out of his own hair. He jumped up onto a cliff nearby, as if he instinctively thought he was safer there, and struggled to pull out his pokédex from the pants pocket.

Loudred suddenly froze - it had recognized Aberdeen's voice from the shout into the cave earlier. Its eyes almost grew red, but it held its position. Then, another sound was heard. A tiny squeak, almost like a whisper through the growling from the bigger pokémon. A small, pink creature peered out from behind Loudred's leg.

"Fang-Lin! Hit Loudred with Ember!" Nate shouted, ignoring the smaller Pokemon.

The Fennekin was trying to shake the water out of his fur, but he stopped to follow the order. However, as he attempted to spit out some flames, they burnt out in the air, weakened by Water Sport's effect.

"Hm," Aberdeen thought, running his hands through a wet strain of his hair. "Okay, if the setting is too humid, we'll dry it up a bit. Pidgey, use Sand Attack!" He threw his second pokéball up into the air, it cracked open and out came his newly caught Pidgey. Even though she wasn't quite in sync with her trainer yet, she wasn't the one to refuse a battle when she saw it.

With a little chirp, the bird zoomed in closer to the ground and started flapping its wings frenetically. Gradually over only a few seconds, the soaked ground dried up and a minor sandstorm was flung at Loudred, getting into its ears and eyes.

"Working for you now, Nathan?" Ab asked, cheering on his cliff.

Nathan turned and gave Ab a thumbs up. "Try it again, Fang-Lin!" Fang-Lin responded by firing off another wave of little flames that struck the Loudred's forehead. The bulky Pokemon stumbled back a few steps, but quickly recovered and struck out at the fox with Astonish. Aberdeen's Pidgey was in the vicinity and managed to not be phased by the Astonish attack that hit Fang-Lin hard. She was a normal type pokémon, after all, and ghostly powers couldn't scare her. Instead, Pidgey swooped down and whipped its wings harder to focus the Sand Attack on the wild pokémon this time.

"Good assist!" Ab cheered, finally jumping down from his rock to get closer to the scene. He was a bit surprised that the newly caught pokémon fought their battle without hesitation. Maybe it was in a Pidgey's nature.

Nate called Fang-Lin back and sent Poliwag to fire Bubble at the Loudred. Poliwag aimed right at Loudred's eyes, and the Pokemon let out a huge roar as it recoiled.

The Whismur, left unguarded, started crying loudly as it struck Chespin, the closest Pokemon to it, with Pound. Chespin tried to shield itself with its paws, but the baby was relentless. On top of that, its cry made even Ab, who was used to loud noises from all his listening to music, put his hands over his ears.

"This ain't working," he said through clenched teeth. "Chespin... Shoot your Vine Whip up! And... grab Whismur from behind!"

Chespin, never hesitating, took a jump back to get a pause from the Pounding, extended his vines swiftly up into a circle that came around and ensnared Whismur from behind.

"Great! Pidgey?" Ab called out, and the bird turned away from the Loudred and the fox to at least look at her trainer and consider listening to what he had to say. Whismur struggled in Chespin's grasp but had at least stopped the intensive screaming for now. "Assist with Tackle on Whismur now!"

It took a second, but at least only a second, for the bird to decide that it was an okay order to follow, and then another second before she swooped down and slammed her feathered shoulder forcefully into the bunny creature on the ground. Chespin let go of the Vine Whip grasp in the process and the Whismur tumbled back in the dirt outside the cave.

"Yeah!" Ab cheered, hands in the air. Then he turned back to the other battle, with the evolved pokémon. "Nate! You okay?"

Nate called for Poliwag to follow up with another Bubble attack before answering. "Yeah, this is going a bit easier than I imagined it would." Just then, Loudred slammed its huge jaws around Poliwag, capturing it in a Bite attack.

"Ouch!" Ab yelped when he saw it.

"Poliwag!" Nate cried. What a savage move! he thought. Poliwag's tail was thrashing wildly outside of Loudred's mouth. Nate then realized that Poliwag's head was inside and he figured out the best course of action.

"Poliwag! I know you're scared but I want you to use Bubble again!" With Poliwag still in his jaws, the Loudred looked questioningly at Nate. Then, its eyes got big and watery as it gagged and spit Poliwag out. It fell onto its paws and knees as it struggled to breath. It let out a loud gurgling noise as it coughed over and over.

"Haha, what a strategy!" Ab laughed. It was like a scene from a cartoon movie.

"Fang-Lin," Nate turned to his Fennekin. "Strike with Thief!" Fang-Lin looked straight at Loudred and its eyes glinted. It struck quickly, almost to fast to see, and knocked the enemy onto his back.

"Okay, let's finish this," Ab said, more collected now. "Chespin, use Vine Whip, and really whip it this time!"

Chespin squeaked eagerly as he put on a determined face and reeled out his vines. Just before Loudred got back up on its feet, the vines slammed into its belly, making more bubbles and a pained noise escape the mouth of the wild pokémon before it finally passed out and lay silently breathing on its back in the dirt.

"We did it!" Ab called out and high fived the end of Chespin's vine. He held up his other hand towards Nate and hoped he wouldn't leave him hanging.

Nate scrambled for a Pokeball in his bag, not noticing Ab's gesture until he picked up one of the red-and-white balls. He shook his head as he answered with a weak high-five, then tossed the ball at the Loudred. Ab unconsciously crossed his fingers.

After three quick shakes, the ball glowed once, capturing the Loudred. Nate had both of his arms out in front of him, almost in a field goal gesture, then brought them down and clenched his fists in victory. The other boy just laughed and nodded, but then suddenly fell silent, as if he thought of something.

"Great job, you!" Nate kneeled down and affectionately patted both Fang-Lin and Poliwag. Poliwag was in some tough pain, but she was still happy, just from knowing that the battle was over.

Nate looked over at the Pokeball, then to the Whismur shivering a few feet away, then pulled out his Pokedex. "Usually, its cries are like quiet murmurs. If frightened, it shrieks at the same volume as a jet plane." read out the device. Nate looked up to Ab. "What about that little guy?"

"Hm?" Ab was brought out of his thoughts. "Oh."

The Whismur, struck by Pidgey and Chespin earlier, and probably also somewhat affected by the Embers and Bubbles from Nate's pokémon, looked like it had no idea what it should do or where it should go now. Aberdeen's face put on a somewhat troubled look.

"You reckon that Loudred was its mother or father or something?" he said.

"Maybe they're siblings." Nate wondered aloud as he stood up, walked over to the Pokeball and picked it up.

"You'd think the kids would want this little one instead. Not at all as much of a monster."

He crouched and reached out a hand towards the shivering, pink blob. "You just watched us beat the crap out of someone you cared about. Gotta be rough," he said to it. "But that's pokémon training, pokémon do battle in the wild too, right? It's what you guys do."

Whismur looked down and proceeded to stare into the ground with only small whimpers. Ab looked up at Nate. "I think I'll catch this in a ball too and bring it back to the kids. See if they want it." Nate nodded silently in reply.

Still holding the empty pokéball, Aberdeen touched Whismur's head with it. The pokémon got sucked inside the ball, which shook a few times in Ab's hand until it seemed like the confused baby gave up. Maybe it was better to be with a human than being left alone here.

Nate scooped Poliwag up into his arms. "That's enough training for you right now." he whispered to her. He turned to Ab and said "Let's head back to the kids." Fang-Lin looked up to his trainer, yipped in agreement, and bounced up and down a couple times.

As the sun turned into afternoon, the two Cherrygrove trainers walked back towards the place where they had met the siblings earlier. It didn't take long before they met them on the road; Clara had been impatient and convinced Jim to go after them.

When Nate handed the pokéball containing Loudred over to the girl, she laughed happily and hugged her brother, holding up the pokéball into the air triumphantly. "We can be trainers now!"

"Um," Ab said with a little cough. "There's two of you and only one of the pokémon though. Luckily, we found this little Whismur tagging along with the monst-, uh, with Loudred. So maybe one of you can take that one?" He held out the other new pokéball towards Clara.

The kids looked at each other and then back at Aberdeen. Nate crossed his arms in silent observation.

"But we wanted Loudred," Clara said plainly. "And we'll be trainers together. If our friend has evolved, we can't go back to using a Whismur. Right?"

"Right," Jim said importantly. "Loudred was the deal. No little Whismur now."

Jim then proceeded to take out a quite heavy canvas pouch from his bag. "Cash. We went home to fetch our savings while you were out on the mission. I hope you will find this reward adequate."

Nate accepted the pouch and as the kids happily trotted back south on the road, he opened it up to glance inside. The amount of money he saw made him feel accomplished. It wasn't amazingly much, but it would surely come in handy on a journey like this. But... He looked up at Aberdeen, who sighed but smiled as he looked at Whismur's pokéball in his hand...

"I guess you'll just have to come with me instead, then," Ab said. "You looked too tiny to be out in the woods alone." He put the pokéball on his belt next to Pidgey's and Chespin's and faced Nate, eagerly. "So what's it look like down there?"

Nate was a thief, but he was no cheat. The thought to keep more than his share never even crossed his mind. "It's enough," he said. "We'll split it up once we get somewhere where we can sit down in private. Like a pokémon center."

"Oh, well I wasn't planning on marching straight up to the pokémon center in the north right now," Ab said, patting his own cheek ponderingly. "I want to try and train Whismur a bit this afternoon first."

Nate nodded, and they split the cash up there and then, Aberdeen pocketing his share inside his bag while Nate got to keep the canvas pouch. Next, they said goodbye. Chespin and Fang-Lin, once again outside their pokéballs, reached up their little paws into the air and made a soft high-five.

"Let's meet again, Nate!" said Ab with a smile, a genuine smile this time and not a plastic one like the first time he had seen the other guy walking on the road. "If we're both traveling through the region for professor Pine, chances are high we'll experience some more adventures together sooner or later."

"Probably," Nate agreed. "See you another time, Ab!"

And with that, they parted ways as the road split in two.

--

The sun grew orange and Aberdeen and his troop stopped to rest and eat for a bit. They had sandwhiches packed by Ab's mother, and Ab soon found out that it might become too expensive to let his pokémon eat sandwhiches every day too, because Chespin munched his down quickly and begged for more. But at least Pidgey didn't really eat much at all and Whismur quietly and rather slowly worked his way through his food.

"How are you holding up?" Aberdeen asked the newcomer after a bit of silence, during which Chespin stared at Whismur's food with a slight drool. Ab's comment was of course directed to the pink pokémon.

A squeak was the reply. Whismur didn't seem really scared anymore, mostly confused and a bit unsure of things. Ab smacked Chespin gently on the head to make him behave, then reached out a much more friendly hand to Whismur, who smelled it carefully before hardly nudging it. "Good enough of a handshake for now," Aberdeen chuckled. "Don't worry, we'll train so that you'll become a Loudred too one day. If you want to, of course."

Whismur just looked up at him, wordlessly, with its weird eyes.

"And you did good today," Aberdeen continued, looking at Pidgey and his starter now. "Already working as a team, even with Nate's pokémon! We'll train even more and find even more pokémon and do even more missions... I could become a mission maker. That's totally a legit trainer class."

As Ab spoke, he had laid down with his hands under his head and begun watching the blue sky peacefully. Being on the road was totally nice so far. Anabel would have liked this life...

--

Hours later, Ab's eyes flew open. Chespin had suddenly climbed up onto his belly. Ab sat up and shoved the rodent away, but then noticed how dark it had gotten. It was summer, but the sun was almost down, which meant it was late. He had fallen asleep! Looking around, he noticed that Pidgey was sitting on top of his shoe, looking like a little featherball in shallow sleep herself. Whismur had apparently been propped up against Ab's leg, but had nervously hopped aside when he flew up.

"Oh, great."

With all pokémon back inside their pokéballs and a slight amazement over that nobody had found him there on the field and stolen the money he earned earlier, Aberdeen hurried north. He couldn't be too far away from the pokémon center, right? You really didn't want to sleep out in the open unless you had strong pokémon with you, these days. Rumors about nightly thieves had been spreading. Of course, they weren't often seen in these calm parts of Johto, but still. Everything heard on TV was true, right?

By the time he finally reached the northern edge of Route 30, it had gotten dark, and slightly cold. The large pokémon center + inn + cafeteria stood there like a lone safe haven in the middle of the wild. Many of these had been brought up over the last couple of years, much to the delight of trainers. The lobby was as good as empty, as if most trainers had fallen asleep already. A nurse welcomed the tired Aberdeen though, and gave him the keys to a simple room, pretty much only containing a bed and a toilet. Shower rooms and washing machines were down the hall.

Content with his first day as a proper trainer, Aberdeen only managed to pull off his clothes and turn off the light before he floated off into dreamland.

Nate pulled out a piece of bread from his bag as he walked down the road. Fang-Lin trotted at his heels, content with the events of the day. Poliwag was safe in her Pokeball, resting from said events.

As he ate his small meal, he silently hoped that he would find the Pokemon Center soon. This single piece wouldn't be enough for the evening, and he didn't want to use up any more of his rations. Besides, Poliwag needed a good place to rest up.

The sun was setting up ahead as Nate started walking up a large rise in the path. He yawned and stretched his arms as he climbed the small incline. As he got to the top, the sought-after red-and-white building could be seen in full view.

Nate took a moment to look out over the rest of Route 30 and the start of Route 31. He saw a flock of Tailow flying over the next route. He also noticed some farmland at the edge of the forest.

He scooped up Fang-Lin into his arms and set off down the hill towards the Pokemon Center, ready for a good rest.
