Welcome to the 1 Pokemon 1 Gym Challenge!
(Sorry for the lack of a better name)
This is a rather neat challenge I just came up with the other day.

Rules:
1. Start with your starter.
2. Use that starter until you beat the first Gym Leader.
3. After the 1st gym, immediately catch another pokemon from anywhere you want (It has to be the very first one you see), but do not fight any trainers.
4. Right after catching another pokemon, release your starter. Use only the pokemon you caught until the 2nd Gym.
5. After the 2nd gym, catch another pokemon. (no trainer fights) Release your last pokemon.
6. Repeat. (Yes, you have to release and catch another pokemon after the 8th gym.)
Also, be reasonable. If youre using Red, dont fight Brock, then Sabrina, then Erika, etc. Fight a Gym as soon as you can.
7. you can have only 2 HM Slaves. don't use these in battle AT ALL. not even for Revive sacrifice. So box it when fighting the gym.
8. to be lenient, i will let you use 2 revive sacrifices in the E4 only. or don't, for a challenge.

Example:
In Red, you get a Bulbasaur, train it, beat brock, catch a Weedle back in Viridian Forest as the first pokemon you see. You have to release Bulbasaur, use only Weedle/Beedrill, go through mt. moon, beat misty, then catch an oddish near nugget bridge (should defeat nugget bridge BEFORE the 2nd gym), and release Beedrill. and so on. It gets hard after the 8th gym, but at least you can basically catch pokemon from anywhere.

Optional rules to make it more challenging:
1. Faint = Game Over.
2. No Pokemon Center.
3. No evolutions.

Started challenge on FireRed, named myself ' and rival ' (inverted apostrophe.)
Got a Squirtle. Called it Bowling! as an obscure reference to Pokemon Snap. (Remember? In the Valley?)
I lost to '. darn crithax.
Trained for a bit, owned Brock.

Went back to Viridian forest and caught a lv 4 Caterpie named Flutterby. Released Bowling!
Grindin time, whoo!
Grinding a Caterpie is hard, but once I get to lv 7, i can spam Harden and Potions.
Did so, and killed a bug trainer on Route 3. Gained 2.75 levels in the process, i got the remaining .25 from wild pokemon, and butterfree killed everything with confusion. Stun spore and sleep powder just makes it easier. Was lv 20 when emerged from Mt. Moon. Decided to kill my rival. Had a hard time with Misty, but got lucky due to parafusion.

Walked in route 4 with a 65% chance of catching any pokemon other than Spearow. guess what I got? yup. Spearow. called it Birdbird and desperately hoped this thing had at least a chance against Lt. Surge.

I'm taking this challenge, playing my Blue version.
I'm already with two Gym badges, you know, I thought I posted here but I didn't, so...

Got a Bulbasaur, named Pulp, passed through Route 1, 2 and Viridian Forest. Grinded A LOT before Brock, because there is only one trainer to defeat forcely, the last Bug Catcher in Viridian Forest.
Anyway, my Bulbasaur evolved in battle vs Brock.
For now, I stored it (level 17, I don't want to release them), then catched and grinded to level 12 a Pidgey, called El Pid.
Passed through Route 3 and Mt. Moon, El Pid evolved.
Defeated Gary, Nugget Bridge, two or three trainers, met Bill, and finally got the Cascade Badge. Then I stored El Pid (level 23) and catched in Route 24 a Rattata (the 3rd Pokèmon I saw), a Caterpie and a Weedle (for now stored, I'll use them for 4th and 5th Badge).
Grinded RatMan to level 22 (very, very hard), and passed through Route 6.
Defeated Gary in S.S. Aqua and got HM01 Cut, for now taught to Ivysaur.
Now I'm going to crush Lt. Surge!

PS: Can I use stored Pokèmon as HM Slaves? 'Cause I need Ivysaur for Cut and Pidgeotto for Fly.

Update.

Now, I'm grinding Raichu for the 6th Gym ('cause Pikachu was the 6th Pokèmon I saw), so I beated Lt. Surge with Raticate, Erika with Beedrill, and Koga with Butterfree. All of them were very easy to defeat...

Next, I'm going to catch Geodude, Onix, and the consequent five Pokèmon for Pokèmon League.

I trained my Birdbird. At SS Anne.
It was lv 32. I expected a very hard battle.
It wasnt.
Voltorb went down after a 2 hit Fury Attack.
Pikachu, 2 hits.
Raichu took 4 hits, used Double Team, then Super Potion.
Fearow used Fury Attack, the first hit was critical, the second finished it off.
WHOOOOOO.

I am going to do this challenge, I am starting with Pokemon FireRed and will update tonight or tomorrow.

I started with Bulbasaur and named it Brock, as the gym leader he has to face, and got owned by Noobfal, my rival (damn bulbasaur and critical hitting charmander), and set off to grab a parcel. On Route 22, I grinded Brock up to level 12 and owned Noobfal by spamming Leech Seed and Tackle. I continued on into evil forest hoping for an easy ride. I left Viridian Forest with a level 16 Brock, ready to face the gym. I defeated the gym with 4 Vine Whip's, and 4 OHKO's.

I have defeated 3 more gym leaders, with Brock levelling up accidentally after Erika got critted once.

I'm Joining with Pokemon Red on Emulator!

First Update...

Started out with Bulbasaur. Beat Brock with a few Vine Whips at level 18.

After this I caught a Pidgey at level 5. Trained it through Mt. Moon and evolved it there. Now defeated Misty with some Gusts and Quick Attacks at level 24.
