The only dig I have with my computer is the low-line E-series AMD processor I have. What a waste of 4 gigs of RAM when you have a netbook-worthy dual-core CPU at 1.4 GHz! D:

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say the new splash makes me want to vomit. Doge is possibly one of the most annoying forced memes I've seen to be crapped out of the internet in a while, and honestly it's a little funny when it has its place. And the Comic Sans with the colors? No.

Geez, why would a computer come with a processor that low in speed and have that much RAM?

Because the kind of people who purchase laptops like mine are more concerned about whether the OS comes with games pre-installed than whether it has any kick to it. It's a Lenovo IdeaPad, so I really don't expect much myself... :P

A netbook-worthy low-end AMD dual-core CPU paired with 4 GB of RAM doesn't make too much sense, to be honest. However, whatever it is, don't bother looking at what came with a given laptop other than its hardware and OS. You'll thank me later if you ever get a different pre-built PC.

So here I am posting this from my new Windows 8 laptop.. hopefully I can remove some of the bloatware on it then work with it.

And yeah, I am going to remove Norton Antivirus while I'm at it :P

It's a Toshiba Satellite P55t-A5116. It had a good rating on Best Buy's website, and it's light enough for me. It has a 1920x1080 display and a touchscreen.. I've been using the touchscreen more than the mouse to move around already :P

That's the main reason I prefer doing a clean install from a purchased OS installation DVD, as the manufacturers are relentless with their pre-shipped OSes.

Regardless of whether it's paid already or not, I'd agree with your move on that. When it's in trial mode, it's plain awful with its activity to get you to buy their software, and when its paid they've made it impossible to disable certain shields, and it doesn't have a whitelist for circumventing false positive flags they sell to software companies to get stupid people to delete their keygens and such.

I'm honestly fine with using the Windows Defender antivirus that comes with Windows 8.. it's the exact same thing as Microsoft Security Essentials, which still has yet to fail on me when it comes to scanning for viruses, and I've been a user of MSE for three years now.

Heard Windows 8 was garb with touchscreen, but 8.1 was amazing.

Ermagherd I'm just so hype for Windows Phone 8.1. It's gonna be amazing. I just find Windows OS (and phone) just so fluid and quick. Unfortunately I'm on a budget and the (probably) best phone under the price of 200$ is the Moto G, that thing is impressive. I'll be getting it next week.

Speaking of new laptops, Zach, you might want to try installing all possible updates on it right off the bat. Does it feel fast enough for your needs?

Anyone know how those touchscreen laptops like Zach's would do on Linux? Do they require a bunch of drivers to work? I'm not big on Windows 8.x but the touchscreen seems nice to have sometimes.

What do you think of the software that came with it, in addition to Norton stuff?
I haven't used the Toshiba programs at all. The only thing I used was iHeartRadio, which I listen to on a near-daily basis, but that was just a pre-installed Metro app. I uninstalled all of the Norton stuff.

Metro is lame, IMO. Basically a big stupid movement by Microsoft for those who are unenlightened as to the true nature and capabilities of computers to allow the nastiness of capitalistic corporatocracy and unbending greed to ruin a beautiful thing.

Do you plan on installing Start Menu 8?

Yeah; I'm not such a huge fan of Metro myself. Don't really like its tablet-like interface (they shouldn't have brought it into desktop at all, in my opinion), and lack of start orb doesn't really help, either. I know you could fix that up with Start Menu 8, but it should've been there as a default feature. :P

I stopped minding about Metro on a desktop or a laptop after 8.1, to be honest. Everything is mostly at the right place.

The thing about Metro is that you can basically pretend it doesn't exist once you take advantage of a bunch of things introduced in Windows 7 - namely, pinning apps to the taskbar.

The important thing about Windows is that not every user is the same. Tweak it to your preferences if needed. You'll thank a lot of other people for the fact that you can change stuff in the first place.

Believe me, I use the desktop environment more than anything. The only problem I have with Windows 8 is that you can no longer create icons to the desktop from the start menu.

Considering Windows 8 doesn't have a start menu, it's likely the brand of SM8 that you're using. I don't see why something like that is vital, anyway.
