First off, watch this. A 2 minute goddamn commercial made by him (and it had so much potential for a full-blown movie too, god damn it. :<) And be blown away by the stunning visuals.

Ever seen any of his works? The guy has made movies like "Voices of a distant star", "Place Promised in our early days" and "5 Centimeters Per Second" (more like 5 anime wallpapers per second. SO damn beautiful) and "Garden of Words". The thing that's common in all of his works is that they have heavy amounts of scenery porn - the backgrounds are breathtaking, to say the least. The stories are hit and miss but the visuals are NEVER a let down. Some other trailers below:

So, ever seen any of his stuff? If yes, what did you think of them? If no, do you plan to ever giving his work a watch sometime soon? What did you think of the trailers? :3

Everyone has already seen his stuff.

Some of it is ok.

Best Shinkai related thing is the Voices of a Distant Star manga.

Somehow doubt that. This is PC, not MAL or some other anime-oriented forum. :p

I've only seen 5cms/s. And I loved it. Haven't read the voices manga. Did download the OVA, though. Will watch sometime.

Although I've seen the Cross Roads commercial because of Tumblr gifs, this is the first I've actually heard of the mastermind artist behind it all. I'll check out some more series when time permits. :D Where do I start?

Wow, Cross Road was literally all over tumblr the other day. I really like the visuals a lot <3 I have seen Garden of Words and 5 centimeters per second and although they were beautiful, they were honestly just ok otherwise. they would have benefitted more from a less abstract style of storytelling and a more fleshed out story instead ;; I liked 5 cm/s better, so if you want to check something out I recommend that.

My friend and I watched Garden of Words not too long ago. I was honestly expecting a significant impression, but was let-down because besides the stunning graphics, everything else was kind of standard \: Although I did like 5 Centimeters Per Second (:

Still at least 90% of people who know anime have seen 5cm/s =)

And I have seen pretty much everything from him. He and Hideaki Anno are my favorite directors =)

As for Makoto... Kotonoha no Niwa. The most fantastic water I have ever seen and one of the best HanaKana roles ever.

The water and rain animation was fantastic in Kotonoha no Niwa. That's the reason it interested me initially, but the plot was kind of bland and regular \: Nevertheless, it was eye porn XD Slightly off-topic, but Nerawareta Gakuen is beautiful as well with a slightly more interesting story.

I've seen quite a few movies done by him. The rain was just too perfect in Kotonoha no Niwa.

WHAT!??!? I think Nerawareta Gakuen was bad, but it was beautiful. Some things in the movie wasn't needed at all! And it goes from one point to another point like... A to Z! If I am not wrong, Makoto Shinkai doesn't have anything got to do with Nerawareta Gakuen.

When I watched the Z-Kai commercial, I was like, "why the heck would you spend so much on a commercial!?". I also wanted to know more about the 2 of them!

5cm/s was beautiful and great, but just a little too deep for me.

Haha, I know, and that's why I said it was slightly off-topic :P Whenever I see fantastic looking landscapes and settings are what gets me interested. I think it's time to go searching for some more of his work and look for other great looking anime movies~ Or just re-watch 5 Centimeters Per Second; it'd definitely be worth it.

It's a beautiful movie =)
Not so deep as 5 eye-porns per second but it has a fantastic story =)

Doesn't matter, had HanaKana =D

Nerawareta Gakuen is beautiful as well with a slightly more interesting story.
And another HanaKana movie xD

Same as Blade, I'd like to know where to start watching some of his stuff. These are so excellent; even the trailers without subtitles kept me watching because of how beautiful they were. I hadn't really heard of the guy before so it's nice to know the name behind the stunning work.

If you really want something of his to watch, pick 5 centimeters per second and go with that since it seems to be the most popular.

I just started watching "The Place Promised in Our Early Days" to see if that was any better than the previous 2 that I watched but honestly I couldn't finish it. The visuals are really great, but the storyline and characters are very poor. All 3 of the movies of his that I've seen kind of feel like... dreams almost. I couldn't relate to any of the characters because I never really felt like I got to know them and they didn't really seem very realistic. Almost all of them were high schoolers yet they were spending their time contemplating life? I would have liked it better if the characters would spend less time explaining what was going on through voiceover and more time actually doing things.

I think his most liked works are 5cms/s and Garden of Words. Former is excellent, imo, but can leave you with a bitter aftertaste if you can't stomach open and realistic (when it comes to life) endings.

Garden of Words I've yet to watch. And yeah, even I stopped watching "The Place Promised in Our Early Days" midway. Although I think I'll finish it sometime.

My experience with Shinkai so far - amazing, amazing visuals but storyline that revolve around distance between people. And they can be hit and/or miss. Either way, watch 5 Centimeters Per Second, Dave. Probably the best work. Garden of Words (it actually looks more interesting than 5cms/s - what with it having a 15 year old guy and a 27 year old girl as leads) might be better but I'll have to see to judge. :p

Dunno about the other two but 5cms/s definitely isn't this. I think it was very realistic in its portrayal of how long-distance relationships don't exactly work out everytime and how the phrase "love overcomes all" is just wishful thinking when it comes to real life. Life isn't all about happy endings and it showed it pretty nicely. As for contemplating life? I don't recall either of them doing so in the first section of the movie. Second section had focus on their middle school years (or was it high school? idk) and that section didn't have it either. Third section...well, they were adults and...naah, I don't really remember anything of the sort lol. :b

I was coming back to edit my post after spending some time thinking, but that's okay :3 I guess what I meant is that a lot of the storytelling iirc is through voiceover and implied thoughts since they don't really voice their feelings that often (in the actual story, they do through voiceover). I dunno. It just isn't really the type of storytelling that I like, since because of this voiceover aspect the characters just seemed so distant to me since I was never able to tell what they were thinking on my own really, they always told me outright. But I do agree, now that I'm looking back 5cm/s is better than the others in this regard. But every section they introduced a new girl who didn't really seem that different to the other one (or at least to me). It's been a while since I've seen it, so I hope this makes sense D:

I'm slightly confused about these two sentences here. ;___; Did you or did you not think they took a direct approach when it comes to what was going on in the characters heads?

I personally thought the approach worked well. The story did have voiceovers for the most part but I don't think it was all that straightforward. And the little interactions that were present carried a lot of weight, imo. A lot of implications could be made when it came to interactions between, say, the second girl and the main lead. The girl's dialogue, for example, "Please stop being so nice to me" could mean just that at face value. But the words, in my opinion, implied how she knew the guy she was gunning for never actually saw her for what she is. The guy is a person who always had his eyes set on something that's distant. Something that's far away. He never actually "looked" at her, if that makes sense. It makes the person unattainable in her eyes. His gentle/nice attitude towards her actually hurts her more than it makes her happy.

And that was just one case. The film is full of stuff like this. Even the rockets and ♥♥♥♥ that go off in the background while they're talking serve a purpose, haha. :p It is a pretty damn good story if you look into it. Otherwise just a generic and not-so-happy love story that wasn't ever meant to be.

Oh, and as for the girls - First stands out. She got the most development. She's his childhood sweetheart. :p Second...yeah, she didn't get much development and doesn't serve much of a purpose other than to show us how the main lead, the guy, is a person who always has his eyes set on something that's distant (obviously the first girl - his first love) - which makes him unattainable to others. Third girl got so little a screentime (his girlfriend in the future) that she isn't even worth talking. :p
