2nd Gen Red leader or Gold leader?

Neither, I played with Charmander on FR and Pikachu in Yellow and Chikorita in Gold so... yeah.
Misty on Yellow, ugh Pikachu use Thunderbolt. Failed on FR, Charmander why?! And neutral on Gold, Chikorita.
Lt. Surge, because Miltank was harder.
Erika, caught a Fire Type by then and owned. Ghost is harder.
Fighting, Pidgey was a first catch so he helped with Erika and well this guy.
Koga, because Steelix was mad hard for me back then.
Blaine, Chikorita always died with Pryce. However, I caught a water type to surf to Cinnabar so Blaine=Easy.
Giovanni, remember the water type I caught?
Blue because Red was like WHOA! Lv. 80's!
So yeah there you have it.

yeah i think red was the hardest to beat in all of the games.
he was like the main goal, a hard bonus level. pikachu was easy, because he never evolved it it was easy to beat. pika's defense is low so its an easy target.

I guess I can compare a few gym leaders

1.) Brock or Falkner: Falkner was more difficult because Brock used rock type Pokemon and that made it easy for me, but when I went against Falkner, I had no weaknesses to his Pokemon

2.) Misty or Bugsy: Misty was more difficult because we were both using water type Pokemon; I had a flying type Pokemon for Bugsy, so that was easy for me

3.) Lt. Surge or Whitney: the both of them were annoying, so I'll have to go with Lt. Surge because I had a flying type and a water starter on my team and I don't think I had access to Diglet's cave because Snorlax was blocking it

4.) Erika or Morty: Morty was more difficult because I didn't have any weaknesses other than a Haunter that kept fainting

Overall I think the 2nd generation was better when it came to gym leaders

I found the Gen II leaders to be pretty easy in general. The only one I thought was harder than their Gen I counterpart was Whitney and that annoying Miltank.

Brock or Falkner: Brock was a push over for me because of my Butterfree in Pokemon Yellow. I don't remember Falkner as I haven't played my Pokemon Crystal for a few years but I remember he was a bit annoying and a tad difficult.

Misty or Bugsy: Misty was harder. Bugsy was pretty darn easy haha.

Brock/Falkner

Both were easy. I always started with Water Starter so Brock goes down in a heartbeat. Falkner was just as easy as I had a Croconaw when I fought him. Didn't mean to, but the EXP when I played Silver was easily handed out compared to Blue XD

Misty/Bugsy

Both were still easy. You get a nice assortment of Grass Types before Misty and you get Rock and Flying types before Bugsy. Both were really easy to beat.

LT. Surge/Whitney

Whitney wins this one. LT. Surge is easy to beat when you catch Diglett from its cave. (@~*!*~Tatsujin Gosuto~*!*~ Diglett's Cave isn't blocked by Snorlax in Gen 1. Snorlax blocks the route to Lavender Town and Fuchsia City from Vermillion. Snorlax blocks Diglett's cave in Gen 2) Whitney's Miltank was just a wrecking ball.

gen one was tons harder i think. it was only one region but the main story was really long. it was much harder to beat some of the late leaders. sabrina was fragile, but her pokemon were also insanely strong. her johto equivalent Price was very easy to beat. with advantages and powerhoue pokemon, both games have easy leaders, especially when you have been playing the game for close to 15 years. but first gen leaders were so much tougher. when we were all young, or when we were first time players, most of us probably flew thru gold version, but had a few difficulties beating red version.

I personally found them all easy and never really struggled too much with any of the gym leaders, so there lol.

OF COURSE for SOME people! no pokemon game in existence was ever hard because of they're genius and expertise in strategy-forming!

just kidding, but seriously, some leaders to me were hard at first. i guess some ppl aren't challenged as much.

I never found any gym battles hard at all. But I have to say that Gen I was harder than Gen II, its so easy to beat Falkner (whateverhisnameis). Although Whitney might be a little hard, but can be easy if you kill Miltank quickly.

Only if you're a noob and played Yellow and only used Pikachu all the way till the 1st gym, that will make it hard, but its still easy, SPAM QUICK ATTACK/SLAM.

Well, Gen I and Gen II Gym leaders were easy to beat, But if one was stronger, I would say Gen I. Though I personally like most Gen II Gym leaders like Falkner, Bugsy, and Morty. My favorite Gen I gym leader is Erika.

Brock vs Falkner - Brock Wins because his team ment you had to get a Mankey or train up your starter to Lv16 usually unless you were lucky with Bulbasaur.

Misty vs Bugsy - Bugsy because Scyther was a good adversary if you let the battle pan out because of Fury Cutter. Misty's Starmie was just a pain to get past.

Lt. Surge vs Whitney - Whit... Lt. Surge by a landslide what a combination he had Pikachu, Voltorb and Raichu that is still one of the best combinations I've seen for gym leaders.

Erika vs Morty - Morty and Erika are pretty equal. Erika suceeded where so many Grass specialists failed by having a team with two equal powers and a buddy to complete the package. Morty was just so chilled about battling and if I didn't know better he could've been an Ice Gym Leader ok enough with the bad jokes.

Koga vs Chuck vs Janine - Koga is the best out of the three because of the 13 level boost between Erika and himself. Chuck seemed a bit rushed and didn't really have a personality in comparison to the other gym leaders and Janine was an incomplete Gym Leader and shouldn't have been a Gym Leader.

Sabrina vs Jasmine - Jasmine because of the fact that though she had one of the most human personalities throughout the whole series she was able to use on of the least human-like types.

Blaine vs Pryce - Fire vs Ice, Brain vs Brawn. This is a battle that can only be won by one factor Fire is super effective against Ice. So the winner for this category is Blaine but really anyone with an Arcanine in the story automatically wins.

Giovanni vs Clair vs Blue - Blue but just. Clair to be honest was really the opposite of Lance for so many reasons but her arrogance is probably the best reason. Giovanni was cunning becoming a Gym Leader and then covering his past up to become the leader of an "International" crime organization which succeeded where others failed, however Blue conquered all of this by being able to infiltrate said organization while at its peak, become champion "though briefly" and find a living doing something that he enjoyed, battling.

OH MY GOD. although i somewhat disagree, that has to be the most complex comparison i have ever seen on these forums (exaggeration, people). i enjoyed reading that.

I think Brock stood more of a challenge than Falkner because if you were using Charmander or Pikachu, the resistance is a problem. Falkner on the other hand is pretty simple, especially after the training offered at Sprout Tower. I think Misty was harder than Bugsy as her Starmie can prove difficult to take out at times. Whitney was much harder than Lt. Surge. One reason: MILTANK. Morty could be a challenge if your team lacked the type moves to take out his Pokémon. Chuck was generally harder than Koga because he'd often make bad choices. Jasmine's Magnemite could ba annoying with Thunder Wave and Thunderbot. Blaine's Pokémon were at generally high levels. Claire's Dragonair knew Thunder Wave, which was very annoying to say the least.

Let's see... I think going through the list that Serperion has so kindly laid out haha between each pairing I struggled more with:

Falkner, Misty, Lt. Surge, Morty, either Chuck or Janine but that's still Gen 2 either way haha, Sabrina, Blaine, Clair.

Numbers 5, 6 and 7 I'm not as sure about as the rest but I think it's accurate, I've ended up with 4 from each Generation haha so I guess it's pretty even, depends on the team you have :)

I think the first generation was harder.
If you don't consider Brock (because 2/3 starters win fair to easy), Misty is easy if you choose Bulbasaur (like i do the most), but the rest depends on the team, but still was more competitive.
In second generation, i found Falcon really weak, as so for Bugsy that you just needed a flying pokémon or move to defeat him. Whitney Miltank was quite a challenge, really hard, but then it was more fast of a game to my impression.

I definitely think the 'toughness' of a Gym Leader depends on the team you have at your disposal; which comes back to the starter you choose right back at the start of the game. For example, with Totodile or Cyndaquil, Falkner is a breeze, but if you pick Chikorita, things get a bit tougher (a combination of the Super Effective moves against a grass type plus the lack of moves Chikorita has available to it).

Back to my original point though, if you have a balanced party that covers the weaknesses of all (or almost all) of the members, you stand a good chance of getting yourself a Gym Badge without resorting to grinding or brute force.

Oh the memories. If memory served, Gen II gave me more trouble. After Squirtle, I always played the Water starter. So, Brock and Misty weren't too bad, and by that time, I had other Pokemon that could handle the other gyms. Totodile was a tough little guy, but Whitney was almost too difficult for me at that point in the game. I would have rather fought Surge with only my Water starter.
