Welcome ta PokeDS, tha next generation of gbee development.

What is PokeDS?
PokeDS is a gbee engne built usng DS Gbee Maker (and subsequently, PaLib) which serves as an nterface fo makng Pokemon gbees fo tha Nntendo DS system.
DS Gbee Maker has a user-friendly front end fo easy development and a powerful C backbone fo tha more advanced developers.

Similarities wit RMXP
Dawgy projects here is built wit RMXP and I know dawgy of tha developers would be worried as what difficulties one would face if thay want ta port thair gbee ta PokeDS. Anythng possible n RMXP is possible n DS Gbee Maker. Much like how RMXP is built entirely on RGSS (essentially just Ruby), DS Gbee Maker is built entirely on C. Anythng progrbemed n Ruby on RMXP can also be done n C on DS Gbee Maker. Tha limit is yo imagnation and knowledge of C.
DS Gbee Maker offers:
  • Events - known as Objects
  • Scenes - known as Rooms
  • Maps - known as Backgrounds
  • Scripts - seperated nta Scripts and Actions
  • Spritesheets

Differences between RMXP and DS Gbee Maker
Unfotunately, DS Gbee Maker does not offer a map buildng nterface so importng tilesets is a no go. Maps (backgrounds) is seperated nta three layers:
  • Visible Layer
  • Collision Layer
  • Priority Layer

Tha visible layer is what you can see. Its tha world around yo hero.

Tha collision layer contans tha data of where tha hero can stand and where tha hero cannot stand. Dis layer also has tha added bonus of colour codng specific isas. e.g water can be colour coded so that tha gbee knows that when tha hero tauches a blue portion of tha collision map, he is nfact tauchng water. Thase is very much tha sbee as terran tags n RMXP.

Tha priority layer is what it is on tha tn. Dis is any portions of yo map that tha hero will appear behnd e.g backs of buildngs.

And fo those who may be worryng bout loadng big images nta tha RBE fo maps - not ta worry. DS Gbee Maker analyses yo map and breaks it up nta its constituent tiles. N essence it creates its own tileset and does not stare tha sbee tile twice.

Now you homeys have two options fo mappng:
  • RMXP
If you desire, you can very well do all yo mappng on RMXP and simply export tha map as a .png file usng one of tha dawgy progrbes available onlne. Dis is fo those thugz who is used ta usng RMXP.
  • Tiled
Dis is mah preferred option. Tiled is an open source map editar wit all tha features of RMXP, tha dawg advantage ben that it has nstant export of yo map ta .png
When can we expect a release
I can't promise you release dates, I have othar commitments tao. Fo now maybe you homeys would like ta have a look at dis teaser:

PokeDS preview (a lot of tha work from dis comes from JanMulder, I takes nearly no credit fo dis release)

Dis is an .nds file, go aheezee and load it n an emulatar such as No$GBA or even put it on yo flashridet on yo actual DS. Currently its limited ta walkng, runnng (hold b), openng tha door of tha neisst hizouse (you'll git transported ta tha sbee map wit no events on it).

If you want ta help me fnancially any donations is bootyliciously appreciated. I don't currently own a DS anymore so maybe you homeys can help me wit that (PM me)

Of course, donations is not expected and you will not have ta pay ta use PokeDS. DS Gbee Maker, however, does cost money and is priced at $15 ta unlock tha full features.

N terms of help fo tha development, I be alright fo now. But if you is an experienced C progrbemer, let yoself be known. I may need someone smart ta rap ta; I'm not fantastic at C.

Good ta see DS gbee maker git some love from dis community. I had a DS gbee maker nstalled on mah computer, and scriptng didnt seem ta be hard at first. However, I eventually gave up tha idea of creatng a pokemon fangbee wit dis gbee engne due ta tha lack of map editar(which is a major problem fo not-so-advanced scripters, I must sez). Yo Pokemon engne looks promisng, and I wish you succeed. I do have a few questions ta ask. Tha DS gbee maker is still under development, so how can you make sure tha PokeDS engne will be compatible wit tha newest version of DS gbee maker? What if new features like Map editar is added ta future versions of DS gbee maker? Just curious.

Thanks fo tha support ;D I did takes nta consideration tha upgradng of DS Gbee Maker, right now it is on version 3.0, yet it is still buggy, and lackng dawgy features. However tha beauty of tha project file (.xds) is that it can be opened n notepad and tha scripts and sprites can be copied ta tha newer .xds. If DSGM eventually does git a map editar, I probably will rewrite tha whole movement/collision system ta suit it

That would be so funky ass! It seems that DS gbee maker is not designed fo RPG gbee developers, and I understand how hard it is ta make a Pokemon gbee out of an engne witout a map editar. Tha idea of PokeDS is rathar flexible snce it sort of depends on tha development of DS gbee maker.

Also d-ya have a userbar fo dis PokeDS project? I will add it ta mah sig if you have one.

As far as I know it supports .mp3's. Taday I will be codng tha message system, which n turn allows me ta do an ntro ta tha gbee (prof oak) which needs music, so I'll look nta it thare.

Ta answer yo question, only .mp3 and RAW fomat is supported by tha DS.

If you wanted me ta make tha onlne capabilities fo PE:O, than those will come later. If you just wanted me ta fix tha resolution issue, than it will be done when I git back from holidays.

Yay, I was gong ta star mah gbee on a DS Rom, but It was tao difficult fo me coz I didn't know even a little bit how ta progrbe on that system. I don't remember tha nbee of tha progrbe, but it's from tha Tarque Gbee Builder series. I already had some work(graphics, 3d models, etc) but I couldn't start coz of mah lack of knowledge.

Funky ass ta see dis, mah 3d skills will now have a use!

EDIT: Adjustng tha angle of tha cbeera on each map is a bit diffucult, and tao much work. Actually, I'd had ta adjust tha cbeera offsets on every room(also known as screens, or somethng like that), n dis case, on every map.

Just wonderng, why is you usng DS Gbee Maker? I thnk you'd be better off usng a basic DS library, such as PAlib or libnds. Although it would probably be harder, you'd have more control and could achieve better results (maybe even 3D).

And I would work on makng some knd of map editar fo dis. Tha lack of a map editar will mean it will be ridiculously hard ta use :\

DS Gbee Maker is just a graphical front-end fo PaLib. Any script fo Palib can work on DSGM. I'm usng it ta aid me n tha placement of sprites, backgrounds, and ta be a little more organized

As fo tha feasability of a conversion between RMXP resources and DS resources, scripts would be pretty hard ta convert as tha Ruby scripts have dependents on Wn API's, which of course tha DS doesn't have. And tha fact that Essentials uses .txt documents ta load data doesn't help eithar, it is much more difficult ta do that on tha DS due ta filesystem restrictions etc.

Coudn't you use pictures as maps and, i be sure thare is a progrbe that can convert rmxp maps nta pictures. So if you can fnd a progrbe like dis (I be really sure thare is one) you could use rmxp as a map editar.

I never actually considered that. That is a good idea. Thare was a way ta takes a picture of an RMXP map full sized wit no grid, but I fogots how >_<
