Pokémon Sprite Discussion [from RBYG to XY]

Which reminded me, saw this pic a while ago on Tumblr where you can see basically the evolution (no pun haha) of Pikachu's sprites. I think I like them up till 2nd gen and 3rd gen is where they start going down for me. Although I do like the orangy colour in some of the later sprites, but not the model at all.

What's the last two sprites' game? It looks awesome! Just don't like the color though.
And the Crystal sprite looks like it's waving at me.

I'm guessing it's Platinum, I'm really not sure though cause I can't read Japanese lol.
edit - Ok I looked it up and it's the 5th gen sprites, all of them. And the orangy one is the shiny.

Myeah the whole lower row is, but in Platinum they have a different animation and those last two are those frames. This is one of the first Silver sprites I actually like lol.

Is that really from B2W2? That's huge! :| You should have found a better Pokemon though lololol. But seriously, that is huge. I can't wait to see that thing animated. Wow. But it's slightly cut off, which is why I'm a bit skeptical as to how that can be an official sprite.

I just inspected every element of them, and yeah, they fit the maximum.
I quite like the sprites, especially Thundurus'. People say it's more of a dragon, when I think it looks more feline than anything else. o3o

If it's true, then yes, it is! ^^ I hope we don't have to worry about Pokemon posing at a really weird angle, just to fit the size limit anymore, like some of the pre-BW back sprites (Crobat, Machamp, etc).

However, speaking of Therian Formes, I like Thundurus' and Landorus' more compared to Tornadus'. I always thought Tornadus' Therian Forme look kind of funny. o__o He doesn't seem fitting for a bird in my opinion.

I hate that color scheme for a bird, so it's not really the bird form that bothers me, just the fact that Tornadus is that puke green and toxic purple color. Gross.

And this is an old thread, so most pictures likely have broken image links now. No big deal. It's not something I would bother going around and fixing.

I don't anything wrong with it tbh. Almost every Pokémon has a backsprite with only half the Pokémon showing.

Yeah, that's how they used to be lol. Though I kinda agree. I wish there was at least a bit more of the Dustox. That backsprite kinda implies that it's laying down on the ground or something. Beautifly got better backsprite treatment. WAY better treatment.



Heck, it's only missing a few pixels, but basically, its whole body is there. Poor Dustox. :( Looks like it got corrected in gen IV though.

Comparing these two, although Black and White's is much more up to date, I prefer the pose from Red & Blue, it makes Rapidash look more radiant and graceful. Don't get me wrong they both look great it's just the current one is kind of predictable and well average.

Recently, I was working on a utility in Game Maker that allows one to compare the sprites of RS, FRLG, and E. When I was cycling between Ruby/Sapphire and Emerald, I found a few differences in about 43 Pokémon sprites as listed in the following spoiler.

For a few examples, Wartortle is blue in Ruby/Sapphire while in Emerald he looks purple like in Fire Red and Leaf Green. Also, Cubone's "fingernails" aren't visible in his Ruby/Sapphire sprite.

The Rapidash sprite has a much better pose in Gen 1. I think i like the Crystal one better though.

I'm assuming you're talking her blue sprite, right? Blue pose is kinda pretty, to say the least. What I do is simply and logically call the sprites Green (Japanese Red and Green) and Blue (Blue, and International versions of Red and Blue).

I really don't understand what happened with Exeggcute's sprite during Gen I.

Okay, now bearing in mind that Pokemon Red and Blue take on the supposed "graphical updates" of the Japanese Pokemon Blue, this is the "updated" sprite from those games:



What in the name of christ happened?! Did the middle egg suddenly contract gigantism?

I think this kind of thing happened with quite a few Pokemon in Red and Blue. Koffing randomly switching its skull and crossbones to its forehead comes to mind.

I remember that most of the RBG sprites bother me when i was a kid and i always think.. "Why? Why X pokemon looks like this when the artwork its so much diferent", specially with the last evo of my starter sprite, Venusaur.. His RB back sprite always disgusted me xDD

Yea,I agree used to think that all the time . Back then R/B/G/Y were GB games so I guess that's why the sprites are a bit...ergh. Looking at one of Exeggcute's sprites, the middle egg suddenly turned into a giant somehow ._.

Even now,some of the sprites look kind of funny to me...
