What is the saddest death scene you've ever watched in a video game?
For me, it ought to be Dom's death in Gears of War 3. Epic.

For me, it's the ending of Persona 3. 'Nuff said.

John Marston for me, fought so hard for what was taken from him and before he knows it he loses everything even after he held up his end of the bargain, got to admit seeing what happened at the end brought a literal tear to my eye.

Gotta agree with you there, I teared up a bit at the end. He was just a guy who was in the gutter when he was young and was trying to make things right. That's what killed me.

John Marston hands down!
He finally got back to his home and family and start back on his farm and teach his son then bang, Blackwater agents got him. It's tragic, and the way he died after all those men put bullets in him.

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.
Spoiler:
That ending wrecked me. I practically bawled all the way through the credits and I still get pretty morose any time I think of it. (Although I've stopped tearing up every time, at least!) What makes it worse is you know it's coming. If you've played FFVII or seen any of the compilation you know Zack Fair isn't in it aside from flashbacks or visions. So the game has to wipe him out by the end but the way they work even the freaking battle mechanics into his death scene is just so horrible. Aerith's mega cure reel comes up that fraction of a second too late? Gah.

Honourable mention goes to Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days since that made me cry too except there's a line in the death scene that makes you snort with laughter when it comes up and (understandably) kind of ruins the mood. (YOU ALL KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT IF YOU'VE PLAYED.)

I think instead of putting a warning in the title it'd be much better to just spoiler your answer and mention what game it is.

There is only one appropriate choice for me.

Metal Gear Solid 3:
Spoiler:
I don't feel emotion for video game characters to tell you the truth, but this particular game actually got me feeling for the main character. After the virtuous mission, which is basically a tutorial mission, the whole game begins with Operation Snake Eater, and when you succeed, you finish the game. One of the main objection of this operation is to kill The Boss, your mentor, for defecting and to prove that America was not responsible for a nuclear bombing in Russia. (This is set during the Cold War, if you don't know.) So all said and done you finish everything - Beat the COBRA Unit, kill Colonel Volgin, and destroy the Shagohod. Well everything except killing The Boss.

So now everything is set for the final battle, the final objective, the face off to prove you surpassed her. All what happened was supposed to lead and prepare Snake to this event. With the 10 minutes Snake had to kill what he considers a mother figure, he managed to knock her out. Hesitant to kill her, The Boss herself had to BEG Snake to do it, telling him that there can only be one boss. Snake kills her, no YOU kill her. You, the player, are the one who pulled the trigger, unbeknown to the truth. The battlefield, a flower garden, turned red in response to her death, and the agonizing Snake-shaped scar she had that symbolizes her giving birth in the battlefield, left and disappeared, indicating she finally found peace.

But that's not what so sad about this - Hear me out. After the Operation was over with, Snake wakes up with a voice message from Eva, his lover, and the only one who knew the truth about The Boss. What's in the message is Eva admitting that she was actually a spy for the Chinese and the real reason how she knew about The Boss was the she was her teacher when she was younger, and then the real reason behind The Boss's defection. She was actually forced to defect to act as a spy and to obtain The Philosophers' Legacy, and that no one should know this. But things happened and Volgin bombed a facility in Russia, and a controversy happened where in order to prove that America wasn't responsible or affiliated with this, they had to kill The Boss. She couldn't commit suicide, she had to actually get killed, and she didn't hold back against Snake because it would be considered suicide if she did. She had to trust her student to accomplish his mission. It wasn't suicide, it wasn't murder, it was sacrifice.

She died for her motherly love to Snake, and honor for her country. Snake knew this. Everyone in both Russia and America view her as nothing but an enemy and a villain, when she was the real hero. Snake knew this. She had to trust her own student to accomplish his mission, kill her and become an entity above her. Snake knew this. And he doesn't view himself as the hero after this, but she was still the real Boss, the real hero. He doesn't think he deserves the title of "Big Boss".

Death Scene

Really the only death scene I ever felt actually touched me. The song played against the character was so fitting too, it pretty much tells the whole story about the scene.

Final Fantasy 7. 'Nuff said.

If you've played the game, you'll know what it is. If you haven't, play it and find out. It's the one game death that still kinda gets to me.

John Marston. I hated how he returned home to live with his family and at the end he gets brutally murdered.
Spoiler:
I'm glad Jack Marston got revenge and killed Edgar Ross, he deserved it.

That was really sad. I haven't really played games in a while so I forgot some deaths, but the one in 358/2 Days was pretty heartbreaking.

Spoiler:
When Xion dies, that was probably the saddest death out of all the Organization's members (if she counts). But yeah, when Roxas was like "who will I have ice cream with" that killed the mood. XD

The ending of FFX. Even though it really wasn't a death, more of a fading into non-existance, it still feared me up. Another one that got to me was the death in FFX-2, well, actually the whole video that went with the song 1,000 Words got to me.

Well, Infinite Space came to mind, as the only game I've played that could both be called story-based and contains character deaths. Ha. So, between the scene's music, the fact one was working with him in the past and how soul-crushingly easy his fleet is to destroy at this point, I've found the death of Vilchjo Valso to be the most poignant.

Spoiler:
"Take a good look at me: a portrait of a broken man whose nation was conquered.
You've got to gather a lot more power if you want to avoid the same fate.
Fail, and the Large Magellanic Cloud will fall just as easily as the SMC did."

It's not really an 100% death scene.
But mine is in Golden Sun 2 : the Lost Age.

Spoiler:
After reaching the top of the final lighthouse of mars, symbol for fire. The wise one confronts Isaac and Co. while he's companioning with the enemy Felix and Co. He disallows you to light the lighthouse on the excuse of the world is not ready and weyard shall fall into chaos, darkness and war. So he exclaims ''If you can kill a miracle you can be worthy of lighting the final beacon.'' Dissappearing he leaves behind a large three headed dragon. The team being confused the approach to defeat the dragon. While Scholar and old friend Kraden realises something but it's too late to stop, as the dragon attacks. After the large gruesome fight, Kraden stands from a distance in despair. The dragon's body begins to fade and the heads it had change to human bodies. Of Isaac's Dad and Felix and Jenna's Parents. They look dead, and Garet curses the Wise one, and Mia and Ivan join in, saying how he's not a god to make them attack their own family. The team light the lighthouse and the world's balance begins to be restored. They rest in the town of Proxx at the base of the lighthouse, now free of the deadly snowstorms, and the team's parents slowly recover and they make their way home.

Iit was touching because you feel all triumpant of defeating the final boss, and it turns out, you could of murdered your parents if you did it any worse( more strength).
Kinda touches you and kills ya mood.

Aeris'(Aerith's?) death was probably the thing that hit me the most. Yes the plot had something to do with it but that isn't the real reason it hurt me the most. You see on my first play through of FFVII, during the first disc I exclusively used Cloud, Tifa and Aeris(Aerith?) whenever I could. I missed a lot of the optional stuff so Vincent and Yuffie weren't even on my team. But near the end of disc one I had already obtained Omnislash and Great Gospel(the latter is a complete waste of time). So I get to this sad end and I realise that my party is one third weaker than what it was just moments ago. Now you know this gets worse since Cloud is missing for like half of disc two and Tifa is only gets like 5 more minutes with you before she joins Cloud. So Aeris'(Aerith's?) death was sad for me because it was the start of the hardships that were to come and clearly she was a character I liked a lot that's why she always on my team.

Now the death actually touched me the most and doesn't affect game play.. You never see this death, in fact it makes it even sadder that you don't. Throughout FFIX you get to know a wide range of characters, one of the most prominent ones is Vivi, the artificial Black Mage. Most of the game is actually about Vivi following Zidane around as he learns about life and even death. One of the things the game points out is that these artificial Black Mages have very short lifespans. At the end of the game the epilogue is a bunch of scenes some months after the final boss fight depicting the state of the world and how everyone is getting along. However, Vivi is dead and between scene transmissions you read parts of a letter Vivi wrote before he died, supposedly to Zidane whom he admired most and is also presumably dead. I'm not very good at explaining this you can just watch the youtube video here.
