Pokemon Bronze is okay. It's honestly not fantastic and the tiles that spell out "POOP" where the player can't see are retarded, but I'm bias for G/S/C because I started on it and I know how hard it can be to hack so it gets my vote <3

Otherwise, I can see why Rose is winning, as it looks pretty good. I can also see why kids love Cinnamon Toast Crunch. What I can't see is why Furious Flames is nominated for "Hack of the Quarter" when clearly it should be in the contest "Edit of the Quarter".

First screen = Fuchsia City with an NPC giving away Treecko instead of Bulbasaur like in Yellow.
Second screen = Exact replica of Route 101 except with improper tree shading... what.
Third screen = A reused Gym Leader from R/S/E with minor map edits.

Okay so I've just had a proper look at the other two hacks, having not really looked at many hacks at all in months, and I have to say that if these are the best hacks in the Progressing Hacks section I am very, very disappointed.

They are not at all. I do not know wat the mods were thinking with the choices. silver legend, dark rising, victory fire, hyetology, are all in the progression hacks and deserve to be here. on pokemon hackers online both dark rising and silver legend are already in their respective hack showcase on the website.

You're talking like that's something to be proud of :P.

I think people are overreacting about the hack choices. At the end of the day a hack, as well as all thing in life, being good or not is subjective. Just because you may not like the hack choices doesn't mean that someone else doesn't (in this case giradialkia and DrFuji). However, I do agree that if the community are going to be asked to vote on three hacks I think they should be somehow involved with the picking/nomination of the three hacks in question. I know it never worked like that in Hack of the Month but the community as a whole has moved on and I think it now deserves the opportunity to help nomination the hacks and be more involved. There are many things you can to get the community involved in a much fairer way than the present:
  • have a nomination thread out a week prior to the actual voting thread and have people nomination hacks similar to how Hack of the Year works and then take the top three hacks and have a poll voting thread
  • choose select, deserving, members of the community to be on a fair and unbiased selection committee and have them choose the three hacks
  • just have a straight out vote where people can vote for any hack in the community and have the hack with the most votes win
Those are probably the three best ways to go in my opinion. I prefer 1 or 2 but I'd definitely take any of them over the way it's run now.

there should have been a nomination for HotQ thread before the actual HotQ thread itself, the three hacks chosen imo arent fantastic (compared to some very well-made ones in the past HotQ) and MANY other quality hacks like dark rising/hyetology have been omitted, why?

Would the person who narrowed down this three care to even explain the process of nomination? or is it just some "lets pick 3 random ones that i see from progressing and put them up?"

Cos honestly furious flames shldnt even be there in the first place, its more of a edit in the vein of Blaze black/volt white then an actual hack with general overhaul of events and scripts in the game.

Exactly my point. I know pokecommunity is not as crowded in the rom hacking section as it once was, but the amount of views and replies for this thread after 4-5 days is not even close to the amount the first quarter hacks had within 4-5 days of their thread. this shows the lack of interest in the nominated hacks.

will the people who picked the 3 hacks nominated respond with an explaination for the community please?

I haven't played Bronze so i have on comment on that but between Furious Flames and Rose I'd have to pick Rose because it has great Tilesets and the story is interesting which in the current Beta goes only till the 2nd gym so thats saying a lot, whereas in Furious Flames they've made it so that we can go in two regions (Hoenn and Kanto) which is great but it lacks in a proper story plot.

As for the nominations i think there should be a thread where we can choose what the nominations should be for the next HotQ or atleast have a say in it.

I believe abstaining was probably the better option for you, in that case. I have done so myself.

I wish people would vote for 2nd gen hacks more, just because they don't have great graphics doesn't mean they're not great hacks! Pokemon Bronze rules!

Bronze, because finding a good GSC hack is hard, and it's near completion!
I haven't played Rose nor that FR hack yet, but Bronze is good. Kinda hard to hack GSC.

I continue to abstain. However, Rose is way ahead; I think we can call this vote.

Since people have been posting about this, giradialkia and I have decided to respond.

I want to put this out here: The nomination of hacks for HotQ is not a democracy, but the decision of which one will win is. We tried to bring together three hacks that roughly showed equal length, effort and quality - Some may be stronger than others in one department or another, but we theorised that if people took them for what they were then there would be a decent competition. Yes, there are other hacks that are equally able, but we ultimately decided on these three. We have taken on-board lots of responses to this thread and shall endeavour to reach a more widely agreeable decision in the future, but for now what is done is done.

Please, keep this thread clean and show respect to your fellow members, mods and each hack in the running. Just keep in mind that everyone has an opinion (that's what this competition is all about in the first place) and you may not be speaking for others.

I've LP two out of the three games (Bronze and Rose) and I find all of them to be great hacks. I went with bronze because I'm a sucker for GSC hacks and I really do enjoy it. I am a bit biased due to when I LP Rose everything past the 2nd route was a buggy mess. I'm sure Bela has cleaned everything up and I'm excited to play it again. I believe all the hack that are in the running have a lot of potential to be great hacks that I will let's play because that's what I do.

was a good response from the mods...still abstaining from the votes cos i dont really like any of the three.

Actually perhaps we can reevaluate whether having a democracy in deciding HotQ might be a good idea, considering how 33% of the voters went for an edit (IMO NOT A HACK)...

really sad to see another gsc HACK in the doldrums of the poll again. pretty colours over everything i guess.

GSC hacks should not be up against R/S/E hacks due to this. Besides, even if they're all the same base, it's still just a popularity contest; not everyone voting knows everything about every hack to make an informed decision. I would have chosen Rose based on graphics too, but I haven't played any and don't know the inner workings, hence why I abstained.

This is true, it's mostly just a popularity contest yet I still think it should be left as it is. The majority of the rom hacks are of 3rd gen games so if another competition would be made for all hacks excluding those, there wouldn't be many to vote for and the competition would be totally pointless.

Relating to the word in bold there, is there really a point to this competition in the first place? Most of the ones who vote pick up the one to vote for based on the graphics anyway. We could instead be voting for the hack with the neatest graphical work.

The thread's owner will also receive an emblem to go along with their accomplishment. Only those hacks which are in either the Progressing Hacks or the Hacks Showcase forums and have not won Hack of the Month/ Quarter/ Year previously are eligible for nomination.

Feel free to discuss which hack you voted for and why, but please keep the comments clean. Ready? Go!
And I just realized something neat related to the main post. What we actually are voting for isn't defined anywhere. It's just "Hack of the Quarter" competition. What does a hack being "Hack of the Quarter" mean? Is it the hack with the most entertaining gameplay? The best storyline, or something else? For now, it's pretty much the one most popular and graphically appealing.

For the following competitions, I'd recommend making it clearer what you're actually voting for. Also if you take a look at the screenshots of the main post, they're already leading people to vote for Rose! Some of the voters may not play any of the games yet they still vote in the competition. The screenshots taken of Rose Version greatly divide it from the rest, and nicest graphical work is the case here as well.

What could be done is to not show screenshots of any of the eligible hacks to vote for, or possibly show a little bit but try to place them at the "same level" from the start. That way, the voters would actually have to think for a little while instead of just pushing the "vote for this hack" button there and submit their opinion. This would also lead into the actual players have a bigger meaning in the competition, good implementation beats nice graphics anytime, anywhere.

I voted for Rose, but you probably should have used much newer screenshots for Bronze which have the new tilesets and graphics. Oh well.
