Here are my decisions for sectional leaders for The Community Hack:

Head of Story Development

This was by far the most difficult to choose a single leader for since all 3 applicants were absolutely amazing in their own ways. As such, I was hoping we can have all three of them working together at all stages as equals. This means that this position will be a little different to the others.

I've already spoken to Pink Parka Girl and Bela, and they are happy with this concept. So, if machomuu also agrees, then this will be done. Otherwise I will be more than happy to just pick one of you. Though I do think this is the best option.

The basic idea is that a majority (so two) of the three of you need to agree on an aspect of the story. If at any point, one of you feels that something is not fair, I will step in and sort it out.

I'm sure that the three of you will be able to flesh out and amazing story with characters that the players will be able to relate to!


Head of Scripting
Spoiler:
This was a very close battle between all of the applicants. However, hinkage has to win this one because of the diversity of his application. Congratulations, hinkage!

The only problem I had was readability. Since we are working as a huge team, we are going to need to be able to understand the scripts more easily.

All the other applicants are clearly also skilled in scripting, but simply didn't give anywhere near as many proofs as you did.

NarutoActor, tajaros, karatekid552 and Noossab Blue: I'm sure hinkage would love your help with the best ways of getting scripts done.


Head of Mapping

This section had the most applicants by far and it wasn't an easy choice. Sadly doing what I have done for Story Development wouldn't work so much for mapping, so I had to pick one person. This person was not only picked for their amazing mapping skill, but also the fact that I know they can lead.

So congratulations, DrFuji!

Of course I don't expect DrFuji to just map out everything we need by himself. I simply feel that he should have some kind of quality control over the maps provided by other members of the team.


Head of Graphics

Yet another hard choice. I was told by several people throughout my decision time that I should split this up in to categories. I have to disagree. One again, this is not something that can be handled in such a sense. The idea is that this person will be leading the Graphical choices, not that they will be designing everything themselves.

That said, I have chosen Anbuja's_BlooDY to lead this. Look through their Deviant Art gallery, I have decided that their style is the most appeasing to my eyes.

That said, however: I can not deny 11bayerf1's and Fireworks' amazing talent.

The background in the battles in these pictures are fantastic. Though I'm not sure if Fireworks is to thank for them? The main reason you were not picked was because there didn't seem to be much diversity in your Deviant Art gallery.

Sadly diversity was also the reason that 11bayerf1 was not picked. The sprites in your Deviant Art gallery are all spectacular! However, the consistency of detail in some of them is underwhelming. The detail in the second sprite in your Fakemon Pokedex is amazing, but a pretty large minority of the rest of the sprites are severely lacking the same "oomph".


Head of Programming

We may have only had one applicant for this position, but I think that if somebody else had of applied the result would have been the same.

Congratulations, shiny quagsire!

Your entire application was amazing. Plus all the things we've spoken about in the numerous chats we've had, you clearly know what you are doing.


Head of Music

Once again only one serious application. And once again an amazing application!

Your application was amazing, Noossab Blue. Congratulations!

Your compositions are spectacular. I especially love "Desert Symphony". I can't wait to see what we can come up with for this hack!


Sorry it took so long. I've been busy with work and such, but mainly it was difficult to pick the leaders since the applications were all so good.

So the ball is well and truly rolling on this Community Hack idea that PokemonMasters suggested in November of last year. I was nominated by you all to take lead so I've decided to make this new thread so I have a little bit of control over the OP.

Let's continue any discussions we were having in here.

At the moment we are looking for the following members of the team:
  • Head of Graphics
    Includes Title Screen, Sprites, Menus*, Tiles^
  • Head of Mapping
    Maps, Tiles^
  • Head of Scripting
    Level Scripts, Basic NPCs, Story Scripts
  • Head of Story Development
    Story, Side Quests, General NPC Texts
  • Head of Music
    Custom Music, Remixes, Custom Voice Groups
  • Head of Programming
    Anything Hard-coded

* Probably mostly unchanged.
^ Tiles will most likely be decided between both parties.

Seasons in Fire Red - One of my older works, dynamic palettes. It has other applications.
Some small ASM work on Pokemon Grey This included dynamic textbox pallets depending on the time of day.

You can also find a few of my other ASM hacks/memory discoveries that I unfortunately never released the source to on my YouTube. Totally regret that now that the hard drive they were on got corrupted. Here's a sign thingy that I did in ASM, but it had text and the pink was transparent. I never took a picture of the finished product, which was very bad on my part:

That's in Fire Red, all ASM. so if you wanted, once I polish it and release the source, you could make it anything you want, ie Professor Rowan's suitcase, a table with PokeBalls on it, etc. If you want a video, I could do that, but I was lazy and opted for a picture. There's a Linux version, so I'm pretty sure they have a Mac version.

I don't consider my old hacks to be proof of current ability, and in the past couple of years I've written several game ideas and roleplay characters. Writing speech for characters, giving people backgrounds, and making stories with coherent and airtight plots has always been something I've really enjoyed, and as such, I'd love to see that shine through in this hack, with or without me as a part of the story development team.

Other than that...if it comes down to it, and I am to produce an impromptu story for the sake of applying, I will.

Also, I'm a composer by trade, so I wouldn't mind getting in on the music action. However, I don't know the first thing about inserting music into a hack, nor am I sure that what I specialize in writing is what we'd want for a hack...it's mostly contemporary classical.

Comments (if applicable): At heart, I am a storyteller. I've been writing and dreaming since I was old enough to pick up a pencil, and even before then; narrating stories to obliging family who would then write them down for me. The everyday folk you see wandering about in the towns and cities are deserving of dignity - real human beings don't spend their entire existence discussing nothing but the local fauna, after all - and these NPCs can bring just as much character and life to a map as the tiles and layout themselves. Supporting characters can be people you want to cheer for or people you want to see fall - and sometimes, both. Even "evil" Teams can have moral greys, and motives far deeper and more thought provoking than "take over the world with a legendary." The best story is the one that draws you entirely into its setting via worldbuilding; and makes you think and makes you question even after you've finished playing.

In this role as "head" of Story Development ("head" being in quotations here because even if I were elected to lead; I would still like to work closely with others); I would focus on:

Helping to choose/develop the plot - the good, the bad, and the ugly; from the surface on down. Is this going to be an eight Gyms/Evil Team deal, or something else? Is it set in the past? The present? The future? Old region or new?
Writing/helping to choose dialogue to give character to the setting (ie; worldbuilding)
Writing/helping to choose dialogue to give character to the game (serious, spirited, or humorous as the situation calls for)
Writing/helping to choose dialogue for canon characters from the Pokemon universe - if the community wants them to cameo - and helping to make sure they "stay true" to themselves. For example, if Ash were to appear he should act like Ash, not like a generic NPC. I've seen enough hacks get this wrong that if we do have canon characters cameo, I want us to do it right.
Writing/helping to choose dialogue in general
Assisting with development of the supporting characters and the Hero and/or Heroine. What sorts of people are these?
And the most important
: How this plot reveals itself throughout the course of the game. We don't want cutscenes constantly overwhelming the flow of the game and derailing gameplay; but nor do we want the plot to be so tepid that it hardly shows itself at all. This is a game first and foremost; not an interactive novel. If elected to this position I would consult with others to help develop a reasonable "plan" for the story arc - its buildup, conflicts, climax, and resolution from the start of the game to the end; utilizing lessons and criticism I've learned/received while developing Super Rising Thunder.

If not elected to this position, however, I'd be more than happy to help with these sorts of things anyway; perhaps as part of the story "team." My mother-hen help-the-newbies instincts have been long dormant with the death of the Scrapbox, and I'd really love to be involved in this in any way I can to assist and give back to this Pokecommunity that has in turn given me so much.

And on the topic of Fakemon and Gens IV to VI 'mon:

For Fakemon; it depends on the quality of the spriters we have and the quality of the ideas. They can work; but it's really quite chancy. I can't give a straight yes or no to this.
As for Pokemon beyond Gen III, I'm okay with them only if existing 'mon aren't overwritten to make room. Every 'mon is someone's favorite; after all, and no one likes to see a favorite be entirely erased in place of something they might not even like. Given that my favorite is the rather powerless and forgettable Plusle, this has happened to me before and I don't much like it. XD

I generally prefer Spriting in terms of graphics, front sprites, backsprites, OW sprites, you name it. I make sprites from scratch, I can shrink Gen4 and Gen5 sprites to 64x64 style, I merge firered, hg and bw sprites to make custom sprites, so I can pretty much be relied on to either make new sprites for existing pokemon in that way, or shrink sprites that are too big, or even make fakemon if we decide to go in that direction. I have done title screen work which has been successful, I've also made lots of tiles that all seem to work fine and look nice in terms of the HGSS style. I have never done menus, but I'm sure I can pick it up. I have lots of experience with scripting and mapping as well as I have been working on a hack myself (I hope to have a Beta out soon on Pokecommunity). I haven't been particularly active since I've joined, so I may seem like I have come out of nowhere, but I have been hacking fairly continuously for a few years, and have been doing my own personal hack for 2 months now, and have been spriting for much longer. I felt inspired to return to Pokecommunity through working with other hacking websites and seeing the great wealth of resources and hackers over here. Thanks to everyone out there for just listening to my application!

Also in relation the questions posed earlier:

I would say, Yes for fakemon, depending on the skill of design and spriting team.
It would really show how good we are as a pokemon community if we were able to create viable, and popular fakemon.

I would also say Yes for gen4-5 pokemon. There's no reason they should be excluded in all honesty, there are so many tools out there that makes their implementation easy. It also would just be more pokemon inclusive.

I think having a thread for each section once this project gets off the ground will help with organization. Otherwise you would have to sift through the main thread to figure out what your individual team is working on. Maybe we can have each section make a thread in the team recruitment forum, and link them all in this OP?

DrFuji and myself were talking about that earlier. Once we have some leaders for each given section we can work out that stuff.

Hopefully this thread doesn't get spam in it and I sure don't want to be the one "awoking" that but I just wanted to say that I'd like to see machomuu being the one to take over the storyline and events planning.

I have nothing against Bela, at all. And I haven't even played Rose to see for myself how good the storyline and planning really is in it;

Thanks for your input, miksy. I've been looking through everyone's applications over the past few days and your input helps a lot.

If anyone else has an opinion on who you think would be best for the "Head of ___" positions, please let me know. This is a community hack and as such I'd like to know who you want to be leading you in these aspects. But please, try not to make this a popularity contest.

For mapping, I think DrFuji's maps are really nice. I'm looking at his hack's maps right now and they're really good. Though for mapping, maybe you should standardize the tiles and ask for maps to be in default FireRed tiles only (that way additional tiles like sculptures and other special tiles don't add to the map's visual). Lastly about this section, ingame screen shots are not enough. We want to see actual maps, not just a link to your thread full of ingame screenshots. Mapping is a delicate art, there are clever maps, then there are simple/standard maps and finally there are bad maps which has none of the other two.

For scripting, Hikage has shown use of variables and his scripts has kinda diverse scripting commands (money scripts, Pokemon scripts ect..).
I think Tajaros's scripting can't be judged from just his tutorial because it doesn't even cover variables yet (I assume he hasn't had time?). Also if he were able to post some of his more special scripts it'll help his application (even a video). I also encourage more applicants for this section. I would apply myself, but I have no experience or proof to show :)

For head of programming, well...lol. There are too many choices I can't choose! Joking aside his work looks nice and respectable. I'm sure with a spriter working with him, he could achieve "nicer" graphical ASM hacks(which looks like what he enjoys doing).

Head of Graphics and Head of Music are still open to anyone, as in no one applied. I think it's safe to say we don't have many music hackers around :P

I have a similar opinion to milksy91's about the Story Development. That being said, a detailed story of everything does not mean the whole story can be portrayed in the hack. You should leave the player to enjoy some of the game play aside from story as well. By this I mean there should not be a major script every map. You should limit important events to only what is needed to allow the story to proceed while showing character development. Finding that balance between story line and game play is really key for this role.

Bad side: I'm not good at making other stuff other then Trainers and theyre Overworlds, so I guess if you get someone for "Head of spriting", I'll be here as his assistant for Trainers and Ow's at least(Meaning that I'll probably will be backup of those two parts since in mapping we got almost 10 people lol.

Comments (if applicable): The mapping for my hack was done entirely by me, and the scripting was as well minus a few visits to the help thread. I've also attached a practice script that randomizes each of the starter choices from a pre-determined list. (Edited from Oak's original starter script)

Also, I'm a composer by trade, so I wouldn't mind getting in on the music action. However, I don't know the first thing about inserting music into a hack, nor am I sure that what I specialize in writing is what we'd want for a hack...it's mostly contemporary classical.

For head of programming, well...lol. There are too many choices I can't choose! Joking aside his work looks nice and respectable. I'm sure with a spriter working with him, he could achieve "nicer" graphical ASM hacks(which looks like what he enjoys doing).

Head of Graphics and Head of Music are still open to anyone, as in no one applied. I think it's safe to say we don't have many music hackers around :P

I have a similar opinion to milksy91's about the Story Development. That being said, a detailed story of everything does not mean the whole story can be portrayed in the hack. You should leave the player to enjoy some of the game play aside from story as well. By this I mean there should not be a major script every map. You should limit important events to only what is needed to allow the story to proceed while showing character development. Finding that balance between story line and game play is really key for this role.
So, you need more proof??? :3 I'll edit this post out later. And yes I was planning months ago to update my tutorial but since it' so freaking long when I edit it, it'll say server error or something but I managed to get through it once.

I can't believe AVI file sizes are so big!

Well I thought up on another Idea I'll just post a patch to my ROM so you guys can try it out ;) Though you'll just play in few minutes. Link Patch it on a FR Rom.

Your DA is pretty. Fakemon sprites nice, maps (done in a-map) and sprites are nice too. I'm not sure about overworlds, maybe if you posted a couple? Also, if you can do titlescreens and world maps then it'll help a great deal :D


Nossab Blue:

Good script showing use of variables and Pokemon giving. My only problem is that there's a lot of unneeded jumping and such (like for the nicknaming part you jump 3 times?). Another this is that, I'm not too sure how I feel about having all combinations of movements in one script then using a variable to determine which set of movements is run (it doesn't save space exactly because you need x number of scripts for x number of movements). Anyways, the script is a nice script and pretty nice.
About music hacking, there are a few tutorials on it around the forums. Though like you, I don't know the limitations so I can't tell you what you can and can't insert :)

It was a nice script in game, and I liked playing the little that I was allowed to play (Y U PUT RESTART SPECIAL) but it didn't show anything very hard to do (then again scripting itself is not hard to do). How about a script with no movements?

Try something like what Karatekid was trying to do, it's a little harder to do but it'll put you in the lead. Setflags from 0-1000, print all variables 2000-5000 whose values are not 0. It's a 10 minute script if you don't brute force everything, and shows good skill level and taking advantage of variables. I'm sure a man of your talents can do it. Well, you don't have to, I'm not the one making the final decision so you can ignore me if you choose :P
If you choose to do it this, I want to see how you did it :P

I should have been more clear that I was only editing Oak's original script. If I had built it from scratch it would have been more concise, but why not use what was already there?

I've been thumbing around the music tutorials, but not very seriously since school is in full swing...

I don't think I'm going to apply for a leader position. The main reason is because I have nothing to show as proof. My application would look plain in comparison to some of the others :)

That being said, I do want part, and I will try my best to contribute what I can once things get rolling. I don't mind working under someone as long as they don't hinder the rest of the group (implying he/she is not below everyone else's level).

I put the restart special so you won't see some things I don't want you to see... I'm using my hack as a base for that after all

It's not easy doing this I tell you :P Can a 600 line script be easy?

And doing what karatekid is out of my originality.... ;) Plus he already finished doing it... :3

Too many strike through tags. I know it's not easy to write longs scripts the first time, but I'm saying that length =/= quality i.e:
Move player

Shows the same as
