Now, when I say "self-challenges", I mean that the challenges that you, yourself, add to impose limits or any of the sort, to make video games more difficult to complete. For instance, sometimes my friends do a no-weapon upgrade run-through of certain games.

So, from this topic, have you ever self impose any limits to make games more difficult to complete? What sorts of self-challenges would you normally do? How often do you do so? Are there any specific achievements that you'd like to share with others that you're proud of?

Ah, I do those all the time. Generally, added difficulty makes games more fun (for me).

For RaiderZ, I don't use a shield with any of my characters. There's no real benefit and the game doesn't supplement it, but I do like how it looks and it does make the dodging mechanic more essential.

For Persona 4 I'm doing an Izanagi-Only run...which would have been almost impossible in the original, but thanks to the skill cards and stat cards, it's actually easier than my first playthrough.

In most games where there is stealth, such as Metal Gear Solid or Dishonored, I don't kill anyone and (depending on the game) try to go through the games without being detected.

I don't do it often since I usually prefer my game sessions to be chill and, while not easy, certainly not ridiculously difficult. It's only when I really love a game and have played it so much that it's too easy for me on the included difficulties that I'll set challenges. I've only done challenge runs of three games:

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep: Final Mix
Level 1 run on Critical. I did all the main plot (including Aqua's extra stories) at level 1. It was a LOT of fun although now it's hard to play the game at higher levels because it gets boring so quickly after like... level 5. :s

The World Ends With You
Also did a level 1 run, although it was a bit easier with this one because the game is meant for this sort of thing. But I didn't really up any stats other than bravery a few times so it was still pretty challenging, especially since I hadn't touched the game in years when I tried it.

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days
I started a level 1 run of this (which just means never adding level up panels) and it was really easy... although I never finished it because I think 3D came out last winter and I just never picked Days back up again, oops. Should finish this run if I can find my cartridge again.

I tend to like ones that limit all my stats at once but not any of my skills. So I prefer low level runs over speed runs or no equipment/spell upgrades.

On games such as Halo Reach I try to beat the missions on Legendary or at the very least Heroic without dying once, granted it takes a few tries but in the end I pull through.

Also in certain Pokemon games I try to beat the game without catching a single Pokemon, I did it on Fire Red and I'm close to finishing my no catch run on Soul Silver.

The last kind of game where I put a challenge on myself would have to be the Assassin's Creed games where I try to do each mission to the letter with as little casualties as possible, particdularly in AC3 since surviving a full wanted level on that game felt nothing short of a miracle lol.

Only time I really focus myself on challenges such as this is when I'm starting to get bored with what I would be playing at the time and end up needing something to shake things up a notch.

Ah, yeah. They make games really fun after you've beaten them a few times and need a challenge.

In Radiata Stories I'll play using a party of the same race/guild and I enjoy almost all of them except for Green Goblins and the Radiata Knights. Dark Elves were my favorite, though. I even opted out of using Romaria to make it harder.

Whenever I break in a new visual novel, I let my followers on Tumblr make the decisions for me. It's not really a challenge since there's no difficulty, but it's always fun to see what outcome they choose.

Touhou games [all of them!]

I want to complete each game on Lunatic mode, without any deaths or spell-card uses..! .u. I have done it on Mountain of Faith, Perfect Cherry Blossom, and Subterranean Animism.

Often enough, I do certain challenges that are familiar to me. For example, the common "no powerups" challenge on Super Mario games. The only thing that I'm sort of confused with is the question on whether or not Yoshi's would considered to be a powerup. Some say yes, some say no... I think I'd say "maybe?".

I also do a challenge on Zelda games on where you're not supposed to do get any heart containers. I see people do that all the time now, and it's a fairly easy challenge if you know what you're doing. Sometimes, it can be tricky for me in some dungeons like... the Shadow Temple? (especially the boss yikes).

I can't think of any that I've done. Maybe single sitting playthroughs if I had to pick something

I've done Mario games in which I don't go for the warp zones or anything that advances me ahead. I've done it in all games except New Super Mario Bros 2, because I've accidentally found my way over certain worlds and beat the game in about 24 hours. Or speedruns, by beating the game in the least amount of time possible by hand.

My personal challenge is finishing the campaign and still have time to study. It actually involves a lot of cheats and trainers, as it took me to 5 am over three nights to play through all of Napoleon Total War. I never want to touch that again.

I do this a lot in games, mostly when I fund myself stricken by boredom.

Most of my "self-imposed" challenges resort to FIFA 13, generally where most are possible on the Ultimate Team game mode, as well as Career mode. Before I impose a challenge, quite obviously, it would be after I have completed the game and/or have a comfortable experience with it. CoD is an exception, because I have played it for so many years and each game it just takes the guns and maps to get used to. On CoD, I normally would go for challenges such as achieving a certain prestige using a default class or using one gun throughout or just using a type of knife - something of that sort; nothing too complex.

However, with games now I haven't really challenged myself an awful much, but I probably should try, maybe something with Zombies; but that's still CoD... I'll probably end up editing this post with a new challenge I have set myself, perhaps in Skyrim. Just, I don't really enjoy having 2 saves going on at once in that game and I don't fancy deleting my character because it's been a lot of effort getting him to what he is now xD. Let me think...

I do stuff like only having one gun and a knife and a small amount of ammo. Or I'll do a run without going to any casinos and only earning caps off of missions and stuff.

Dishonored
I'll mainly do stuff like no killing or no being spotted, but those are part of the game anyway so, it doesn't really count.
