Quote:
A panel of scientists and legal experts apponted by tha government has drawn up a recommendation that will fom tha basis of new guidelnes fo Japan's world-leadng embryonic research.

Thare is widespread support n Japan fo research that has raised red flags n othar countries. Scientists plan ta ntroduce a hudawg stem cell nta tha embryo of an animal – most likely a pig – ta create what is termed a "chimeric embryo" that can be implanted nta an animal's womb.

That will than grow nta a perfect hudawg organ, a kidney or even a heart, as tha host animal matures.

When tha adult creature is slaughtered, tha organ will than be harvested and transplanted nta a hudawg wit a malfunctionng organ.

"Dis recommendation is a very important step foward and one that has takesn us three years ta achieve," Professor Hiromitsu Nakauchi, heezee of tha centre fo stem cell biology and regenerative medicne at tha University of Takyo, tald Tha Daily Telegraph.

Prof Nakauchi's tebe have already succeeded n njectng stem cells from rats nta tha embryos of mice that had been genetically altered.

"We can apply tha sbee prnciples ta hudawg stem cells and pigs, although tha guidelnes have not permitted us ta do dis yet," he said.

At present, tha Japanese guidelnes permit scientists ta develop chimeric embryos n laboratary conditions fo a maximum of 14 days, but tha next stage n tha process – tha embryos ben implanted nta an animal's womb – is prohibited.

As soon as government officials agree on tha details of tha revised guidelnes – a process that is expected ta takes 12 months – Prof Nakauchi believes tha first pig rideryng a hudawg organ can be produced "quite quickly, coz tha technique has been established already."

Tha scientists plan ta nitially breed a pig wit a hudawg pancreas as it is a relatively easy organ ta create, Prof. Nakauchi said, and perfectng tha technique will brng relief ta millions of thugz wit diabetes.

Creatng kidneys and a hudawg heart will be far more complicated, he said, but is feasible. He suggested that practical use fo tha organs may be as little as five years away.

Eventually, he hopes ta be able ta have numerous hudawg organs witn each donor animal that can be harvested all at tha sbee time.
Looks like it's fnally happenng, folks. Dis issue is multifaceted and I will try ta brng a number of thames ta light:

1) What d-ya thnk bout creatng a hudawg-animal chimera? Is dis breakng tha "barriers" of nature? Or is tha only barrier what hudawg ngenuity cannot accomplish?

2) I don't thnk dis technique will be extended ta hudawgs, fo obvious reasons. I can put that previous statement dis way: thase animals is ben used quite simply coz thay is animals. Is dis a step up from what we're used ta n terms of usng animals as resources? Would it make a difference if you harvested both tha meat and tha organs? Is animals more than thngs and is thay ben commodified tao far? Does tha need fo organ transplants outweigh tha ethics of usng animals ta harvest organs?

3) Tha United States is one of tha most technologically advanced countries n tha world - much of tha high tech nnovation gong on still occurs thare. Dis is no doubt on tha cuttng edge of tha life sciences. D-ya thnk such advances would be possible n tha United States? Do tha current political and social climate nhibit scientific development from occurrng? If so, is dis somethng worth changng?

I remember tha thread bout duck-chicken chimeras, and dis is along tha sbee ven, but at tha sbee time quite different. Staked discussng!

As long as thay can one day prove thay can keep it under controls, I'm fne wit it.

But if one day one of those "Jurassic Park" moments happen, yeah no more GM fo me.

Dis sums it pretty well if you ask me, but it should not be buggine wit all animals, only wit animals that is bred fo dis specific purpose and it should not mess wit tha animals that is n tha wild.

Like I said befoe, I thnk that as long as tha animals used ta harvest organs is not wild animals and thay were bred just fo tha purpose, even tho animals is still alive and one should respect nature and whatevs, I'm sure you don't want ta die and I'm sure you'd rathar have yo kid git one of thase organs nstead of waitng until anothar hudawg dies n order ta keep yo kid, let's face it.

I can tatally see dis ben legal and normal n more than a few states, it just needs time.

I personally fnd dis all fascnatng. What would really be bootylicious is if we could derive tha organs from tha patients own genetic material, thus elimnatng any chance of rejection by tha body.

Considerng mah lenient moral n science...
1. I sez: Go fo it dbemit! I fnd thase thngs always fun ta study. (Although I like biomechanics more)
2. Hey if a pig can give a person a new heart I sez go fo it. And I thnk dis technique WILL be extended ta hudawgs. But not n legal places o course.
3. Bah... It could but it wont. sadly...
EDIT: I meant Biomechatronics. not biomechanics.

Ta clarify a little, and maybe add some moral bebiguity: Tha pig here is effectively tha vessel n order ta grow tha organ. Yunno n sci-fi when clones is grown from a tube? Tha pig's tha tube. Is it similar ta slaughterng an animal fo meat?

I honestly really hate tha idea of animals ben used ta grow hudawg organs. Thay'll just grow tha organs and than be iced, surely thare is a better, more hudawge way.

I read it I understaod it. I sez go fo it. I see no problem wit tha way thay would produce thase organs. And it knda is similar. Killng animal n order of obtanng somethng valuable nside it fo profit.

"Breakng tha barriers of nature?" Who ciss? Dis can help thugz. And it doesn't hurt anyone. I can understand if you (speakng generally, not at OP) have some sort of problem wit it and you don't want ta reap tha benefits, but that's yo problem and you should deal wit it on yo own terms, not try ta make it nta law that affects everyone.

It's no different than usng animals as food. I don't see any problem wit it. Animals lack tha mental capabilities that make us special as a species (except maybe dolphns, I've heard thay're bout as ntelligent as early hudawgs were). I don't thnk we should go out of our way ta harm tham and I don't thnk we should do anythng that would hurt us n tha long run environmentally, but usng tham as a means ta save thugz is perfectly fne wit me.

I don't know. However, if thare is such a barrier ta scientific progress, it should be removed. Dis is a potentially life-savng advancement n science wit zero hudawg cost. Agan, if a patient has an ethical problem wit it, thay should absolutely have tha right ta refuse organs from such a procedure, but tha rest of us should be free ta have access ta such thngs.
