Hi all, i'm thinking bout all this perfect IV breeding but the fact that everyone says they have pokemon with 31 IVs confuses me because iv been told you can't find out the IV, all i know is that the guy in Kiloude pokecenter tells you which stat is what etc. How do you know what its number is? I'm finding this all very confusing and REALLY need some help or im not going to bother with this perfect breeding biz.

If the pokemon has 31 IV the guy is gonna tell you:''Stats like those..simply cant be beat''I might have forgotten a couple of words in the phrase but thats pretty much it

Another tip:Wonder Trade on Wednesday!Many people put their IV bred chained pokemon there especially on Wednesdays.I got some pretty good ones!

Ok, I'll bite... what is so special about Wednesday? I've had a major fun time with Wonder Trade, and use it pretty much daily.

Using Destiny Knot with a Power Item will not work. Destiny Knot and Everstone together will work though, so it advised to have the parent with the nature you want holding the Everstone and the other parent holding the Destiny Knot. Then there's a lot of luck involved to get the right combination of IVs to be passed on to the offspring.
I'm gonna have to disagree. Using the DK in conjunction with a Power item will work. Not sure if you didn't find out about it already and just didn't edit your post, but in case you didn't I ran a test to confirm it.

Here is my process for anybody interested:
Spoiler:

For this experiment, I observed the inheritance for each individual stat of the children, and if the Speed IVs of the parent holding the Power Item (Power Anklet) would consistently pass on.

1) Prep up and Setup
-First I grabbed my parents:
my flawless Tyranitar (Lv. 100 @ 31/31/31/31/31/31)
and my not perfect Ditto (Lv. 100 @ 1/2/30/3/20/12)
and reconfirmed their IVs via IV Judge and Metal Kid's IV Calculator.
-Gave my Tyranitar the Power Anklet and my Ditto the Destiny Knot.
-Dropped them both in the Daycare.

2) Breed, Hatch, and Natures
-Consecutively bred and hatched 30 Larvitars, nicknamed em' 1-30, and recorded each of their natures (for calculating their IVs later).

3) Finding IVs
-Went to the Battle Institute and proceeded to calc the IVs of all 30 Larvitars @Lv.50 with MK's IV Calc.

4)Confirming flawless IVs and 0 IVs
-Ran all 30 Larvitars through the IV judge to confirm flawless and 0 IVs.

5)Inheritance
-Found the IV inheritance for the Larvitars.
This is how I defined inheritance:
1. If any of the child's stat had IVs that didn't match either parent's IVs, then the inheritance was classified as a Varied IV(Proceed to point 2). However, on the chance that all of the child's stats matched either parent (Proceed to point 1.5).
1.5. Level the child up 20 levels while recording IVs at each level and input them into MK's IV Calc again for a more accurate evaluation (In case the reader doesn't know, MK's IV Calc becomes more accurate with more inputted data at different levels). Then proceed back to point 1. If the child's stats still matched either parent, omit the sample from the results; as finding which IV came from which parent would be impossible (Luckily, none of the Larvitars fell into this category).
2. Any flawless IV was inherited from Tyranitar.
3. Any non-flawless IV matching Ditto's IVs, was inherited from Ditto.

And here are the data/results:
Spoiler:

-Inheritance abbreviations:
T=Tyranitar
D=Ditto
x=Varied IV

------------[Child's IVs]-----------------------------------------------[Inheritance]
1: 31 / 31 / 8 - 9 / 2 - 3 / 31 / 31------------------T/T/x/D/T/T

30: 1 / 31 / 31 / 31 / 22 - 23 / 31
-------------------D/T/T/T/x/T

As you can see, 5 stats of either parents IVs are inherited; which means the DK works. E
very single child not only inherits Tyranitar's Speed IVs, but the children also inherits it every single time; which means the Power item, in this case the Power Anklet, works. In conclusion, means the DK + Power Item does, indeed, work.

While I do agree the item combo DK + Everstone will ultimately be the best, the combo of DK + Power Item has it's uses as well. Unless you have 4x/5x flawless Dittos or are breeding genderless pokes
the item combo of DK + Power Item is very useful for initially introducing flawless IVs to a child, when breeding a supply of 5x/6x flawless males (with low egg steps) for each egg group; since their natures do not matter, but only their flawless IVs do. This allows you to breed flawless Pokemon of certain egg groups with the flawless males relatively quicker, than having to start from scratch every time you want to breed pokes outside of the egg group. It also saves time getting flawless IVs on a poke with high egg steps when you've already got a flawless male to work with.

oh finally started to iv breed this week, takes forever but its worth the wit, do people normally stop at 5iv's? ive got 2 parents at 5ivs and trying to breed them to get an offspring with all 6iv's, have given one parent a destiny knot and the other an ever-stone for its nature, will it be better if i give one a destiny knot and the other a power item to pass the missing move down ? so far Ive got a box full of 4iv gibles and half a box of 5iv gibles.

Okay, see, Destiny Knot only lets 5 IVs from your parents pass. That last 31 you want MUST be randomly generated. The power item won't help you at all. I really suggest you go for the optimal IVs, not for the true flawless. That way you don't have to worry about the IVs that you're not gonna use anyway, and any true flawless Pokemon that DOES pop up will pleasantly surprise you.

Hi, I'm new to playing Pokemon, but I've known about breeding for some time now. I mostly hear about having high IVs, but I'm wondering how do you know when the IVs are high (or max).

If you're playing ORAS, when you defeat the E4 you get access to the Battle Resort. If you travel there with any pokemon you wanna IV check, go in the pokecenter. Inside there will be a guy to the right of the desk, he will tell you about your pokes. he will mention certain stats of your pokemon, either attack, defense, speed etc. at the end if he says 'stats like these simply can't be beat', then those stats he mentioned have max IV's,
As for X/Y i can't remember where the IV guy is, but it's the same deal.

I play Y, so he's in Kiloude City's Pokemon Center. So I would have to do a lot of breeding in order to make sure I get the stats I want, right? If that's the case I will use a LOT of paper keeping track of my Pokemon's IVs.

Pretty much yeah. Could take anything between 10/20 eggs up to a good 200 to get the right combination of IVs you're after. So long as you have a Destiny Knot and Everstone for your IV and Nature passdowns you're set to go. If you can manage to get your hands on a 5/6IV Ditto however, the job will be made that little bit easier. You just need to know what exactly you after. 5IVs are usually perfectly fine, i normally only go for a perfect 6IV if that certain pokemon i want as an all-rounder. Say for example for my Gardevoir, i haven't bothered at all maxing for Attack as it doesn't really use physical attack.
As for noting stuff, you don't really need to. If you look on a pokemons summary, you will see the little shapes under the pokemon. You can use them as markers for each stat.
HP = Circle
Attack = Triangle
Defense = Square
Sp. Atk = Heart
Sp. Def = Star
Speed = Diamond
So if you have a pokemon thats maxed in say Attack and Speed, just tap the corresponding shape. That way when you look at you pokemon in your boxes, you can tell straight away what stats theyre maxed in just by looking at what shapes are blacked out :D

Okay, now the symbols acting as markers, I had NO IDEA about that. All my shapes are gray but when I tap them they turn black. (I turned them all back off to avoid future confusion). So just tap the corresponding shape to make it black, to remind myself of a Pokemon's maxed stat... Got it.

As for finding a perfect IV Ditto, I doubt that will happen soon. I think I got one that was originally from a Safari before it was traded to me, since it was a Lv. 35-36 Ditto.

That's what i do now, a lot of people do it now tbh. It's really helpful.

Generally any Ditto you get from a friend safari WILL have 2 or 3 maxed IVS guaranteed. So just catch loads, get em checked.
Good luck with it all. Also, if you need any help with anything else, like filling dex or whatever, just gimme a shout, happy to help with whatever i can

I don't know anyone with Normal type Safaris, let alone ones with Dittos. So I already know this will take more time than I already thought. But now that I know how to check which IVs are maxed, it should be a BIT easier. Thank you for your assistance, bluestars83!.
