Vale Institute of Magic

Background:
During World War II a certain type of ability was unearthed; the ability to use magic. Originally, this ability was disguised as bombs or other war machines further hidden by the theorems and hypotheses of world renowned scientists, such as Einstein. Weapons such as atomic bombs were in all actuality the byproduct of powerful earth magic, and incidences like the Chernobyl disaster originating from a misuse of fire magic. As a result of the destructive nature many of these magics possessed, the United Nations limited access to Mancers (magic users). But an increase of Mancers in society has spurned the need for education, both in application and control, to help ready mages and the common society to prepare for the public introduction of magic into society. This need for education created the need for specialized institutions to help teach new generations of magicians how to control their powers and how to apply them for the sake of society. Even though magic is being prepared for its public unveiling, it is still very much a secret from everyone other than Mancers and high ranking government officials.

One of the most prestigious and adaptive academies of magic resides in the United States of America mid-west region. Located in Wyoming is the Vale Institute of Magic, better known to most U.S. citizens as the Vale Institute of Higher Learning. For most, this school is the penultimate achievement for kids, as many who attend the school become very famous or important in society. This boarding school provides a rather desolate location with enough raw elements to give all five types of magic users (fire, water, metal, earth, and air) a sufficient amount of resources to work with.

Story:
Students are being enrolled under the pretense that they are there to learn how to control their magic. It is largely unknown what the current headmaster, Kristen Vale, has intended for the students, but rumor suggests that she doesn't agree with what the government would like for Mancers, which is for them to be primarily under service to the government.

To help train the students several teachers, each with their own specialty in magic, teach classes that focus not only on magic usage, but other subjects as well, such as magic history. After each day of classes the students are suggested to spar with each other to show their daily improvements. Additionally, the students are categorized depending on the student's usage of magic. Students that show positive and/or creative usage are graded higher than chaotic or overly destructive magic.

You:
You are a young Mancer who has recently received a letter to attend the Vale Institute of Magic. There could be several reasons as to why they wanted you; maybe you come from a long line of magic users or perhaps strange things have been occurring, such as water moving when you watch it, or fire seemingly following you. Either way, they want you to attend, and decide to do so. While attending Vale your overall goal will be to develop your abilities and to learn new magic.

Through the various lessons and extracurricular activities you will be allowed to gain new spells and elements. You decide whether or not your character can learn more than one element, but the more elements a character has the less they can "master" an element. In other words a character that dedicates their magic to one element will be stronger in that element than a person who knows two, and the person who knows two elements will be stronger at their elements than a person who knows three, so on and so on. That isn't to say that a person who knows more elements is weaker, since the more elements a person knows the better rounded they will be against other characters. Additionally, a character that knows a certain combination of elements (there are multiple) can learn special mutations of their magic that are stronger than basic elemental magic.

The School:
The school is divided in to three primary sections: the main building, recreation center, and student dorm. Each section has specific uses and are completely available to travel to, with the only exception being a few rooms in the main building.

Main Building: The main building consists of three floors, though the entire third floor is technically the headmaster's office. The cafeteria is located on the east wing of the first floor while the gym is located on the west wing. The cafeteria offers a wide selection of food, which changes daily and requests can be made. The gym is unlike normal gyms in that it is primarily designed to be used for practicing magic in sparring sessions. In the gym there are five "battlefields" that can be used. These five each specialize in an element. On the second floor are the student classrooms. Classes are based off of year of study, unless noted otherwise.

Dorms: There are five dorms, each for a specific element. The dorms are Platinum House (Metal), Sky Temple (Wind), Phoenix Nest (Fire), Kraken's Den (Water), and Gaia Dorm (Earth). Each dorm is accented with traits inspired by their elements, but individual rooms are virtually identical. Student rooms are well furnished, with each room having a high end computer, queen sized bed, and full bathroom. Also, if two people wish to share a room they may request their queen sized bed to be exchanged for two twin sized beds.

Recreation Center: The recreation center is the place to go if you want to have some unconditional fun. You can find all sort of stuff here, such as TV, games, and if you're feeling extra scrappy you can spar on a special neutral battlefield. A large hybrid swimming pool resides inside and outside of the recreation center. Half of the pool is inside while the other half is outside, and both halves can be separated by a retractable glass partition. In addition to the pool outside, there is a very large field that can be utilized for recreational sport, since sport teams do not exist at Vale.

Magic and the Circle of Elements:

ValeIoM_zps8243fd2c.jpg

I'm sure by now you have noticed the circle above this paragraph. That circle is the Circle of Magic. It displays each element, their strength, and their weakness. Just to be clear Fire is strong against Metal, Metal is strong against Earth, Earth is strong against Wind, Wind is strong against Water, and Water is strong against Fire. The two elements in the middle circle will finally be revealed. They are Light and Dark. These elements are unique in that they prevent the user from learning any other form of magic, and that they are strong against each other. Magic is currently restricted to these explicit elements, so that means a character knowing Water magic can use spells pertaining to water but not ice.

Intro: Day One
Headmaster Vale was walking around her office, checking various papers that are strewn about. Another person, a man to be precise, watched her as she paced about. The man was Paul Sandford, a teacher of Wind Magic and Magic History. He had been a close advisor to her father, whom had recently died.

"I'm sure you're nervous, but there's no need to be in such a hurry" said Paul.

"I'm not nervous. I just need to check a few things before the new students arrive. There were some oddities in this group." replied Kristen.

"Which ones are the oddities? There's that Aeromancer, Shion Igna and that older Pyromancer, Indigo Rogers. Oh, and that Hydromancer, Michael Lee, along with that Geomancer, Crystal Nightwish."

"No, the oddities are Zane Reav and Christian Miles. If what the report says is true then we may be in for a surprise."

"What for? What do the reports say?"

"Apparently these two use…"

Today is the first day of the new school year, and the new class is being introduced. You have all been gathered in the gym, though the only thing that has been revealed to you is that a certain announcement was about to be made by the headmaster. Kristen Vale took her place in front of the students, the fields of various elements strewn about behind her.

"You were all invited here for one reason or another. Some of you come from a lineage of Mancers, while others are first generations, but one thing you all have in common. You are inexperienced and as raw as the elements you control. That is why you are here, and with our help you will be able to use these abilities to their fullest extent. Before we get ahead of ourselves I should mention that the reason you all have been gathered here, in this particular room, is so that we may evaluate your control and strength. The following students have been selected to dual each other." She pulled a piece of paper from a pocket on her pants and started listing of matches. "Jason Barrett versus Crystal Nightwish, Shion Igna versus Indigo Rogers, Maristella Reilly versus Nicholas Skye, Nathan Steele versus Kayla Wash, and finally, Zane Reav versus Christian Miles. We will give you a few moments to prepare, so go ahead and pair up. Once you are done choose one of the fields behind me and when we give the signal you may begin. A quick note, though. Each one of these fields plays to the strength of a certain element so choose wisely."

Indigo Rogers
Gym

Indigo sat awkwardly in the back of the gym as the supposed principal of the school (one Ms. Kristen Vale) gave some long and drawn out opening speech that he honestly couldn't have cared any less about. He was of course excited for his new life, the prospect of meeting and interacting with other magic users also greatly interested him of course, however such experiences were only delayed by such annoying formalities as speeches and introductions. Indigo liked to learn by doing... not by listening to some annoying woman talk. Still if nothing else, having the oppurtunity to hang back and observe his fellow students was of course something he was at least somewhat grateful for... and he had to admit, it was made all the better by the seemingly varied bunch he'd be spending forseeable future with.

He had never seen such an extraordinarily broad array of people. Nervous, scared, proud, brave, arrogant... so many different expressions played upon the faces of the other students and if nothing else they satisfied his slowly growing boredom. This, however, was not the only reason he was purveying the crowds, he had his eyes peeled for a very specific type of person... someone to, we'll say, keep him occupied in his downtime. Someone pleasant... easy to look at, and... (most importantly) female. Much to his excitement he wasn't left searching for long and before too long a time had passed, his eyes were drawn to a young girl with bright blue eyes and startlingly red hair, she had a few freckles sitting across the bridge of her nose and she was far from the most beautiful girl in the World... but she HAD been looking back at hime and the furious blush that spread across her face as she and Indigos eyes met gave the young pyromancer all the indication he needed that she was interested in his company.

He kept his eyes locked on her as she fretted over him, trying to appear casual as she idly watched the principals speech. How cute that she thought she could hide her interest from him, they'd always do that in such awkward situations and Indigo knew just how to play those circumstances to his advantage. He awaited for the inevitable, her gaze to fall back to him and their eyes to lock for a second time, it happened all too quickly.

This time however, Indigo played the shy one... the girl would of course feel more comfortable if he was more awkward than she was, so as his gaze met hers the young man threw his gaze upwards, his cheeks blushing furiously (thanks to a little added warmth from his magic of course) made him appear to be the most shy he had ever been. He quickly noticed that what he had been hoping to occur was now happening right before his eyes, the girl (presumably now feeling much more comfortable) was slowly beginning to edge her way backwards through the crowd towards where Indigo was standing.

Hmm... seems these magical girls may be even easier than the regular ones.

Unfortunately for Indigo however, as he awaited what was sure to be his very first conquest, something the principal said actually managed to catch his interest. "The following students have been selected to duel each other." Indigo raised an eyebrow at this, they wanted the students to do what now?... Duel? His confusion was unanswered however, as the prinicpal began to name out what students would be facing each other in the upcoming activity. "Jason Barrett Vs. Crystal Nightwish..."

Indigo cringed slightly and cursed his penchant for bad luck. Why do I have a bad feeling about—

"Shion Igna Vs. Indigo Rogers..."

...this. Indigo mentally facepalmed as his own thought was made entirely irrelevant by the principals voice.

"...We will give you a few moments to prepare, so go ahead and pair up. Once you are done choose one of the fields behind me and when we give the signal you may begin. A quick note, though. Each one of these fields plays to the strength of a certain element so choose wisely."

"Pair up? Really?" Indigo muttered forelornly, gazing in slight annoyance at the redhead whom was still slowly heading towards him. "Sorry about this dear... maybe next time..." He muttered again, letting himself blend in to the crowd as he started to search for this "Shion Igna"... hmm... Shion Igna. Indigo contemplated his opponents name for a moment, at the very least it sounded like it was more feminine than masculine so that was a plus in his opinion, other than that... Well, it sounded... "firey" did it not? He couldn't really think of any other way to phrase it. "Igna... Ignite... Fire...Hmm." He murmured while walking the crowds. Could he really have been so lucky to have another pyromancer as his starting opponent? He obviously couldn't say for sure... after all what was really in a name? Still it gave him a little bit more confidence as he headed for what would be his first real battle against another magic user.

MICHAEL LEE
The Gentle Water Mancer

Gymnasium
x
CHAPTER I,
Part N:

"Behind the Vale"
.

The following students have been selected to dual each other. Jason Barrett versus Crystal Nightwish, Shion Igna versus Indigo Rogers, Maristella Reilly versus Nicholas Skye, Nathan Steele versus Kayla Wash, and finally, Zane Reav versus Christian Miles. We will give you a few moments to prepare, so go ahead and pair up. Once you are done choose one of the fields behind me and when we give the signal you may begin. A quick note, though. Each one of these fields plays to the strength of a certain element so choose wisely."

Michael picked his head up after resting it on his knuckles. They had to fight other students? Wouldn't that be a little... Violent? Magic was something many people feared, and for good reason. Mr. Wei's words echoed in his head. "There are dangerous people out there, and with magic, they are only more dangerous." Michael glanced down at the other students (he was sitting in the corner by himself, far in the back uppermost bleachers) nervously. Any one of them could be a bully or could want another student dead. And if they have magic, they're even more dangerous. "However, magic is not all bad," Wei's speech continued, "it only depends on the one who uses it." Michael remembered the event. It was the day he'd come home with a black eye, tears in his eyes and fists clenched tight. He was punched by the school bully during recess, but when he got back up, the bully looked terrified. The kid turned and ran, and when Michael turned around, he saw why; the water fountain was splashing and waves were thrashing about like crazy, water droplets hovering over it as if it was in space. Michael saw it for one moment, but when he finally made the connection, the water fell back into the fountain. He was kicked out of the school after the bully ran to get the principal. That's when Mr. Wei gave the speech.

Back in reality, Michael found himself looking at his balled fist. He watched his fingers as they stretched open, his focus gone for a few seconds. He stood, readjusted the scarf over his neck, and headed down the stairs of the bleachers, approaching the woman who had explained the battles, lightly tapping her shoulder in hopes of getting her attention. "Ma'am..." Michael spoke gently, "I know the battles are just to show our abilities, but..." Michael looked down to his feet for a few seconds, then to the water bottle in the side pocket of his messenger bag. The water had only just settled from his movement, but tiny waves were forming in it anyway. Seeing this, Michael paused to sigh, relaxing himself before looking up at the woman with his bright blue eyes. "I'd really prefer not to fight anyone, I'm pacifist... Maybe I could do something else to show my ability...?"

"Shion Igna vs Indigo Rogers," the headmaster named off.

"I feel sorry for whoever that Indigo guy is," a student nearby started.

"Why's that?"

"That Igna family's full of crazy pyros," he continued, unaware of the Igna child just a few seats away from him. "One punch and you're screwed."

A third student interjected; a senior this year. "I can vouch for that. One of their kids was here a couple years ago, and she could kick out a hydro without breakin' a sweat."

"Are they actually that good? It sounds like you're yanking my chain." Appropriate way to put it for a ferromancer.

"If Shion's anything like our last Igna, Rogers is gonna come out of that fight on a stretcher."

All this talk was warranted, if Shion had anything to say about it. Her grandfather's name carried through to this generation, and for good reason. He'd created an entire martial art around pyromancy, and it lived on in his children, then theirs. Her older sister seemed to make fire dancing famous in the school with her willingness to take on all challengers, and students were already starting to get frightened by the name alone. Lana had an undefeated streak before she left thanks to her eagerness; Shion didn't intend to lose.

"Excuse me, miss, but do you know who Shion Igna is?" One student, who made it clear that he was Indigo, was taking a gentlemanly approach to finding his opponent, chatting up the girls to see if they had already gossiped about their soon-to-be classmates.

Shion stood from her bleacher seat, slipping through the wave of students trying to find their own sparring partners, and ended up not five seconds later directly behind Indigo Rogers.

"Hello," she spoke in a semi-quiet monotone. It was the most courtesy she could give at the moment. The girl speaking with Indigo turned him around, being the first to notice, and the purple-eyed young man took a brief look at his opponent.

"My... so you must be Miss Igna... or so I presume by my friend here's reac...tion..." Indigo turned back around briefly to the young lady he had been speaking to, but she was inexplicably gone... how odd. Turning back to Shion, Indigo found himself slightly taken aback by the girl's appearance... for someone who had warranted another student to flee, she was quite attractive. Indigo found himself slightly bemused by it, in fact.

"Ehm... yes. My name is Indigo; Indigo Rogers. I believe you are to be my opponent?"

Shion only nodded in response.

Quiet girl, I know the type... might be more effort than it's worth... Indigo thought, but he also noted that she was polite as well. (At least enough to greet him.) It only made it stranger that she could scare off someone else on arrival. Even on a higher level in the bleachers, she didn't reach Indigo in height, either; she must have only been tall enough to reach his chin on equal ground. A short glance across her body told him her hands were manicured. Her skin looked delicate past the thigh-high socks and large cardigan. Her long hair was well-kept. Was she seriously a fighter? However, the gossip surrounding them about Shion's family told him how dangerous she could have been.

"I'll tell you what Miss, since I don't mind myself which of the fields of battle we duel on, I'll leave the decision up to you... should you wish it." Indigo instinctively gave the girl a charming and friendly smile. "I, of course, have the greatest of confidence that a girl with such an impressive reputation will be more than capable of making the best choice."

His opponent nodded a second time, taking a look over the various fields available. Each one played to the benefit of a certain element. She could take the air field; most students, even aeromancers, wouldn't balance too well over the massive fans. Fire was her specialty, though. Her family was pretty much famous for it. However, she took neither. The water field would have been disadvantageous to both Shion and Indigo alike, since the platforms were more dangerous than the fans. The metal cage, in the meantime, was too restrictive.

"Earth," she told him, pointing in the direction of a boulder-ridden battlefield. She didn't give him much chance to respond, as Shion went straight for the stairs to head toward the chosen arena.

Indigo was about to say something when his opponent decided to simply leave without his input. He supposed he HAD in fact offered to allow her full control of the decision... but still, how rude.

"Hmph... I'm liking this girl less and less by the minute... what a bother," he muttered, low enough so that nobody would hear him.

Maristella Reilly

"You were all invited here for one reason or another. Some of you come from a lineage of Mancers, while others are first generations, but one thing you all have in common," the headmaster drawled. Maristella bopped up and down in her chair with excitement, although she tried her hardest to restrain herself before she embarrassed herself. This was so super exciting!

Mancing, was it called, her sway over water? She would be the first in her family to have the power. Sure, her grandparents could be hiding something from her, but by their tendency to have plants wither and die from lack of moisture she highly doubted it. Something bubbled up inside of her, an eagerness to release the energy inside of her that had always been there. A lot of things about her had been explained when she had received the letter. Not just the strange occurrences, but some of her attributes: her easy grace in water, her fluidity in dance that made all of her friends envy her for some reason. Hey, they had roped her into dance because it was supposed to have the least amount of physical education required, which she did somewhat appreciate, but she had turned out to be really good. It was fun too, learning new combos every day for variety, so she stuck with it for longer than she had most activities.

Aris managed to shake off her thoughts with surprising speed, however, as she was impossibly excited to get started, to explore this new and fascinating topic that she felt could have a lot of different things within it. But then the headmaster just ... kept ... on .... talking. Normally Aris liked watching people, but she liked conversations, interactions, not some lady who could've been standing in front of a brick wall for all of the enthusiasm towards the kids she was giving.

Aris's attention wavered even more as the woman blathered on about some evaluation. Boring! Who wanted to test what you knew when you can learn something new? The rhyme made her cringe double internally, but she marched past it. Her mind jumped to the subject of rhymes. Which rhymes weren't cringe-worthy, for that matter? The most cringe-worthy, in Aris's opinion, were definitely those homophones. Bear and bare had a special name for them already, they didn't need to be thrown into a poem, thank you very much. Surprisingly, near-misses rhymes like again and rain didn't bother her too much. But why didn't again and rain rhyme anyways?

Aris's thoughts were quickly spiraling away, so much that she only heard the principal call out the tail end of her name. "-ella Reilly," she announced. By the time she cleared her focus again, she had only heard another name: Sky. Sky was a weird name. Maybe it was an abbreviation? She had heard of one girl named Skylar, in passing. Sky. Sky. Sky. Maybe the girl was an Wind Mancer? That would be super cruel by her parents, though it was reasonable. Was the sky really part of wind, though? What was the sky? Normally when she meant sky she meant that blue canvas with clouds, but was that wind? Or were the clouds more windy? But clouds were made of water, so maybe that was more her affinity. But...

Soon Aris was lost in her mind again, sitting down and staring blankly with no idea with what she was supposed to be doing.

Crystal Nightwish

___________________________

"You were all invited here for one reason or another. Some of you come from a lineage of Mancers, while others are first generations, but one thing you all have in common. You are inexperienced and as raw..." As this woman continued to speak, Crystal focus began to fade away, she was not interested in the speech, but as the focus of it turned from a wellcoming to an evaluation, Crystal focus returned to it.

"Jason Barrett versus Crystal Nightwish" As the first names where called her eyes widen and a small grin appeared on her face.

-Well, it seems i will get some fun after all.- The small grin on her face now a wide smile.

She started to look around to see if she could identify her opponent in this evaluation, but to no avail, there were plenty of studdents moving around, but no one that seemed to react to the name called, so she stood up and began to walk to one of the earth fields, examining it as well as looking at the other fields.

-I wonder who i will have to face off against, i guess i better get ready for anything.- Crystal touched one of the boulders, which quickly began to mold like it was a fluid, moving around her hand until the boulder dissapeared completely and instead now was covering her arms and upper backside with what could be describes as a stone armor.

Crystal sighed and smiled after catching her breath to recover from the small magic use.

-There that should be enough for some light sparing.- She then turned aroudn to watch the other students, some were wandering aimlessly trough the gym, others talking, -Some must be sparring partners.- She tough to herself.

Crystal decided to stay near the field and simply wait for her opponent than to look for him.

"Earth". Crystal suddenly head a girl exclaim, as two students began to move to one of the earth fields, curious and a bit exited to see more magic users , she decided to get close and watch so using the stone she molded it into a pedestal that moved her to a height where she could see the field where the two students were heading to. -Hehe, this should be fun to watch, i wonder what kind of magic they use.- Crystal just stood there, on top of the earth pillar, watching, exited to see more magic users powers, while at the same time waiting for her sparing partner to show up.

Suddenly Crystal had an idea and touched the pillar with her hand, as some of the material begantomove from the side creating some letters carved on the stone pillar, while the material that moved came to form two rings on her left hand.

The letters read her name and an arrow pointing up at her, she figured that should be sign enough to let Jason know she was her sparing partner.

-Well that should do it- After that Crystal returned her attention to the earth field the other students were moving to.

Jason Barrett - Dueling Mancers

Jason stood somewhat at attention as the lady spoke to them. As she did so, he took the time to slowly look at the group he was among. There were quite a few mancers together. Some looked extremely tough, while others may have the lineage to take the advantage with. He, though, had never really been in a fight in his life. The one time he was close to one was during school back with his dad. The boy, about his height, was trying to prove a point by mocking his upbringing. It got Jason fired up enough to meet the boy after school in the parking lot. He remembered waiting about 30 minutes before heading home, not wanting anyone to worry about him. He hoped now that they wouldn't have to do much fighting, at least right away. Give them some time to adjust first, you know?

As the lady continued with her introduction and he saw the fields behind her, all hope diminished. Turns out they WERE supposed to fight in order to test out their abilities. Why couldn't there be any other way to show their skills, or lack thereof? Before he could think more about it, the lady (presumably a teacher) started reading off the list of mancers to duel. And who were the first one she calls out? None other than...

Jason Barrett vs. Crystal Nightwish!!!!

Jason shook his head with dismay. Not only would he have to fight, but he'd have to face a female? Shock, discomfort, and a slight twinge of uncertainty rocked his body with no way of comforting himself or calming down. He turned his attentions to the fields that they would be subjected to. As the teacher finished and the group started to move around to find their opponents, Jason simply walked forward by himself to the fields to analyze them better. He took off his sunglasses and placed them in his pocket as he looked around. One pairing has already chose the Earth field, so there were four left. He kept his mouth shut as he decided to let his opponent find him.

It was then, however, that his attention turned to a pillar that appeared. As he looked at it, he read the name of his opponent and an arrow pointing to her. He locked eyes with her for a moment before looking down and shaking his head again. She was really good-looking and was probably a lot tougher than she appeared. "This is gonna be rough," he thought as he walked towards her, smiling a little as he approached. He took a small bow as he stood there, "I assume that you are Crystal. I'm Jason. Pleasure to meet you."

Nathan Steele

Gym

Nathan sat absently in his chair while listening to the lady in front of them making a long and totally boring speech. He came to this school in the hope of getting stronger and mastering his steel element. But here he was, sitting in a chair and almost dead of boredom. Nothing annoyed him more than speeches, they were long and full of lies. He always firmly believed that taking action was way better than boring people with speeches and that's why he hated politicians. He was getting ready to give in to the calling of sleep when he heard the word "duel". He immediately got pumped up, now she was talking and had his full attention. He listened attentively for his name.

"Nathan Steele versus Kayla Wash."

So he was going to fight a woman first? This was a test for their abilities so he wouldn't hold back for one second. He'd fight to impress, not caring one second about his opponent. She, it had to be a female, shouldn't pose him too much of a threat anyway. His main concern, now that he thought of it, was his lack of offensive magic. Sure he make turn into steel and punch the girl but he wasn't exactly sure that was allowed since he could kill her. Well, he still had his chunk of iron to craft and use. That should be enough for him. He got up and noticed many students searching for their sparring partners. How exactly was he supposed to find her? It was like searching for a needle in a haystack. He tried to move around but there were too many students. Needless to say, he was actually surprised by the numbers of people that could use magic. He thought they would be a secluded number of persons but they were a lot, too much for his liking. He was standing there, wondering if he should search for Kayla or not. Maybe he should yell her name? No, not very classy and would attract unneeded attention. He saw two people choosing the Earth terrain. "Tch, she'll search for me. Why should I even bother?"

Nicholas W. Skye

Gym

Nicholas sat in his chair, barely paying attention as the lady in front delivered a boring speech.
"You were all invited here for one reason or another. Some of you come from a lineage of Macers, while others are first generations, but one thing you all have in common..."

He began to zone out, not really paying attention to the lady as he planted his focus on the battlefields. So we're probaby going to do something with those... he thought.

Nicholas focused his attention on the lady once again as she continued her speech.
"...evaluate your control and strength," she said. "The following students have been selected to duel eachother."

Nicholas felt like predicting the winners, so he continued to pay attention.

"Jason Barett versus Crystal Nightwash."
Hmm, Crystal sounds like a Geomancer, but I can't tell what element Jason would be. Maybe Crystal? he thought.

"Shion Igna verson Indigo Rogers."
Well, they actually both sound like Pyromancers. Though I think mabye the Igna guy might win? I feel like I've heard that Igna name before.

"Maristella Riley versus Nicholas Skye."
Hmm, Nicholas would probably win that one. He chuckled, as he knew he was talking about himself. Wait, what? Nicholas scanned the room, trying to locate his opponent. But with the huge crowd, it would take forever.

"Nathan Steele versus Kayla Wash,"
This time, he wasn't paying attention. He was repeatedly looking around the room, trying to find his opponent.

Sytano Morgan- Prepare thine- Damn.

There was a flutter of anticipation in his eyes. It didn't matter who you are, you could see it. He hadn't come amazingly dressed, since it wasn't a funeral. No, he came in cargo shorts and a red shirt, hoping for a quick ushering into their dorms and a change into more... school appropriate clothes. As he sat down in the bleachers, however, he quickly realized that wouldn't be the case, and thus, Sytano had predicted testing beforehand. Like, sit and write answers testing. And it was a horrible thought. The headmaster stood up in front of them once Sytano as well as some others had found their seats, Sytano seated at the far back.

"You were all invited here for one reason or another. Some of you come from a lineage of Mancers, while others are first generations, but one thing you all have in common. You are inexperienced and as raw as the elements you control. That is why you are here, and with our help you will be able to use these abilities to their fullest extent. Before we get ahead of ourselves I should mention that the reason you all have been gathered here, in this particular room, is so that we may evaluate your control and strength."

Of course. He was rig-

"The following students have been selected to duel each other."

Wait, no. He raised an eyebrow, but then a slight smile formed the eyebrow this disappeared. This sounds like it should be much more fun then I had hoped for.

The headmaster pulled a paper from her pocket, with a list of names, and the bleachers seemed to go quiet for a simple moment.

"Jason Barrett versus Crystal Nightwish."

The bleachers became heavy with anticipation as well as whispers.

"Shion Igna versus Indigo Rogers, Maristella Reilly versus Nicholas Skye, Nathan Steele versus Kayla Wash."

At this point, the bleachers were full of excitement. Morgan irritably tried to listen.

"Sytano Morgan versus-"

He leaned in, but at that moment he couldn't hear. People were chatting about Igna, which he had heard about from his grandparents perhaps once or twice. But this was unimportant to him as he pushed past the seats as stealthily as possible, but he was only able to hear the final matchup.

"...and finally, Zane Reav versus Christian Miles. We will give you a few moments to prepare, so go ahead and pair up. Once you are done choose one of the fields behind me and when we give the signal you may begin. A quick note, though. Each one of these fields plays to the strength of a certain element so choose wisely." Morgan quickly became nervous. Anxious. Whoever he was going against, he couldn't have heard the name well. He scratched his hair and hoped to find him- or her- and nearly worked up the nerve to ask the headmaster herself. But at the last minute, he thought to himself. If anything, we won't be able to find each other in this mess. So waiting by a match helps more than not. And considering that the Igna match seems to be where a lot of other students might go, it seems like it would be the first place someone would look. He made it there before a lot of others- and he watched silently.

Indigo Rogers
Gym

"The battlefield for Shion Igna and Indigo Rogers has been decided," a teacher announced, mildly surprised that there were actually students who had prepared themselves within the first few minutes of letting them free. "Their fight shall take place in the second Earth field."

Shion removed her cardigan and left it hanging on a hook at the edge of the field, leaving just a dark blue T-shirt to be lit up by the blue sky above them. Indigo couldn't help but stare for the moment at how Shion's shirt hugged her chest, and that her skin remained unscarred throughout. But that wasn't unlike too many other girls—at least normal ones—so why was he paying so much attention? Was it because she annoyed him, or just them being opponents and trying to analyze each other?

Finding an open area among the boulders to begin, Shion told Indigo, "You can make the first move." He didn't think much of it; just that she had chosen the arena, so he could strike first. It was fair, albeit not to his liking that he has to initiate.

As students gathered in the seats on the outskirts of the field to spectate, the previous teacher announced, "You may start in three..."

"Two..."

"Good luck," he heard. Shion had mouthed it out. It wasn't a snide comment, either; she seemed sincerely concerned for his well-being. It only took a moment for him to notice Shion's legs. Her socks, and even the sleeves of her shirt were being torn apart by sheer power. Indigo felt his jaw drop slightly at such a spectacle while the anxious murmurs of other students in the crowd began to fill his ears. Most of the words they spoke were negative, almost all of them discussing the various ways that Indigo was about to be beaten.

However, as the final second before the match was counted down, Indigo's jaw dropped expression grew from apparent shock to all too apparent excitement. "Ha! Perfect."

"One..."

Shion wasn't giving him a choice. Indigo was going to have to use his full power from the start.

"Begin!"

Indigo took a deep breath and rubbed his hands together, generating the heat he needed to get his fire magic pumping through his arms. He bounced in spot gently as if prepping himself before stopping and taking another deep breath. He was ready as he'd ever be.

He focused his gaze on Shion as he charged forward, his arms held out by his sides ready to strike, using the rocky terrain to his advantage, Indigo began to swerve in and out of cover while keeping momentum in his run... just in case Shion had any ranged spells at her disposal.

When he finally felt he was close enough with a decent vantage point, Rogers leapt forward, swinging his heated arm for the right of Shion's torso to burn her with the friction from the impact. She was standing still; it should have been a direct hit!

Well... that was unexpected... Where...? To the left? No. Right? Just more spectators.

Indigo rolled his eyes up, seeing Shion's back upside-down just a foot away from him. He rolled his body into a dive and heard loud crashing sound, like a sonic boom. When he stood up, he found his body unscathed past the dust and dirt, but the ground under Shion was cracked. She was standing still again, but clearly preparing for another go. Indigo grimaced slightly and peered closer at the cracked ground.

That... that would have killed me. Alright then, I guess you're not playing around. He smirked deviously. "I like that."

Indigo winced his eyes for a moment as he watched Shion. Even when standing still... it would be foolish to think he could get an easy hit on this girl. After all, she had quite literally just completely dodged his attack... his original tactic was rendered completely worthless.

Then again, considering his original tactic was "charge in and hope for the best", he wasn't exactly surprised.

Seeing that Shion was getting herself ready to fire again, Indigo quickly started panicking. He looked left and right and quickly dive rolled behind a boulder, allowing whatever shock wave Shion decided to fire the opportunity to hit nothing but a hard rock face. Indigo winced again as he felt the overwhelming force of the attack completely shatter the rock he was hiding behind... and with that done he still felt a light breeze at his back.

Moving away from the poor boulders shattered remains... (and trying to imagine what would have happened if Shion's attack had hit him) Indigo gazed over at the girl with wide eyes filled with emotion... however, while one might expect to see that emotion as fear or contempt... Indigo's eyes were filled with adoration and adrenaline. He was practically swooning.

"My, oh my... aren't you quite the surprise? Such strength! Power! All bundled up in a beauty as captivating and... *ahem*... slender, such as yourself. How breathtaking!" Indigo gave his most charming smile and opened up his arms, much to the jealous screams of the girls in the audience who were already hypnotized by his looks.

"Now then, Shion, wasn't it? Come at me! Let me see what you're really made of!" While to the common eye this may have seemed like petty flirting. It was exactly that. But at the same time, it was also part of a newly thought up approach to the battle at hand. Since direct attacks didn't work, Indigo would just have to try and counter.

That kind of luck just wasn't his, though, as he needed only blink for Shion's rock-crushing fist to dig into his side and the screams of many a crying fangirl to echo in his ears.

Yuri Kimishi (Toph) Chapter 1 - The dual

"A duel?" Eliza says, hr voice small and shaky.
"Indeed my young student, today is the day you pass for your entrance test. Don't be put off though, if you do bad you aren't going to be just booted out the school."
"That's good..."

But I'm so weak, how could I ever hope to compare to the people hand picked to go to this school. Well, yes it's true that I was handpicked too, it's taken me all my strength to get here. How could I hope to challenge anyone in this place, even the walls themselves mock me with their thick space, a luxury I couldn't afford. The place is just so magnificent and posh, I don't feel right here at all, and I'm so nervous. I can't do much with my spells but defend, and have no intentions to hurt anyone, so what will I do. I suppose I could dilute the water with salt and throw it into their eyes, but I wouldn't have the guts to do that... Maybe I could just defend myself until the last minute.

The doors, swing open into the gymnasium I was guided to earlier. Everyone is caught up in watching the two people go all out on each other. It kinda frightens me that people could be so violent. Sometimes I wish that fighting isn't the answer, perhaps this test isn't about your skill to fight but your capability to use your spells and your mentality. Either way, the two down their now probably have both of that, but they are so violent. I couldn't ever be that violent. I take especial not of how the boy is ducking between the rocks for cover, and decide that perhaps my technique should be dodge evade. No, wait, I'm not that fast am I? In fact they are going pretty fast that it's impossible to keep up with them. I shrivel up on my seat afraid of what might happen to me. What if I get hurt. Perhaps I shouldn't have come to this school after all...

Kristen Vale

Kristen had just now managed to finish her welcome speech to the new students. She looked on towards the students in the bleachers to see how each one would react. As usual, there were some who took the initiative to find their sparring partners and some that stood back to observe first. She couldn't fault a student for being either type, it showed either a willingness to get things done or the ability to be patient, and those were useful for Mancers of all kinds. More and more students began to spread out. Most were finding a match to watch, since most of the students showed only glimpses of magic ability or were too unstable to control it. A couple of students, seemed to have issues with fighting as well, but that was one thing Kristen was against. By her reasoning, those unable to compete in matches were either cowardly or couldn't grasp why these matches were important, which was also detestable to her due to how much can be learned from these matches. Almost on cue, one of the students approached her. It took her a few moments to register who it was, after which she recognized the student to be Michael Lee, one of the new Hydromancers.

"Ma'am... I know the battles are just to show our abilities, but…" Michael started.

She noticed him staring at a bottle of water in his bag. It looked to have just settled down when waves started to ebb, flow, and crash down in the bottle, almost like a tiny sea. It was basic for Hydromancers to control water like that, but for her it just wasn't that impressive. Then again, she had seen a student literally ride up a waterfall before coming to the school, so the water bottle event just looked like a cute parlor trick. Michael looked back at Kristen, sighing.

"I'd really prefer not to fight anyone, I'm pacifist… Maybe I could do something else to show my ability…?"

Now that was a word she never liked hearing. Her brow even furrowed for a moment when he said pacifist. They were nothing more than cowards who didn't have confidence, or so she thought. Regardless, that was something that could be changed through reasoning, and she had people perfect for that job. She knew one of the newer teachers, Eric Long would be perfect for helping this kind of student, since he was well practiced in therapy and was also a Hydromancer. With a bit of work she hoped Michael would develop into a fine student suited to her ideas.

She grabbed a small phone from a pocket on her pants and started looking through a list of contacts. Eric Long was fairly high up on the list of teachers and within a few moments she sent him a message to report to the gym and wait by Metal Field A. She received a quick confirmation on the matter. The phone was returned to her pocket, and was followed by a quick look at Michael.

"I just contacted another teacher. His name is Mr. Eric Long. He'll help you through your evaluation process, but I'm going to make this clear now. You will have to participate in these matches eventually, there's no exception on the matter. The only reason you aren't in one right now is simply because, from what we already know, you'd be overwhelmed too easily. For now, though, you should be able to find Mr. Long at one of the Metal fields. He's fairly young for a teacher, so you should be able to notice him pretty easily."

Her tone with Michael was coated with nonchalant, being sure not to sound too hostile on the first day, but her job was a business of sorts and she couldn't afford to have faulty products. The school's reputation wasn't built on faulty products, and neither was her plans, but that would have to wait. She just hoped the boy would be a bit less timid in the future and he would grasp the necessity in these duels. She sighed and returned her attention to the other students. One of the matches had already started. It was one of the Igna kids. The girl seemed promising, but pretty unusual that she wasn't a Pyromancer. After her initial thoughts on the match she started to walk around the gym, gauging the progress of each pair. Unfortunately, the only pairs that even seemed ready were Ms. Igna and Mr. Rogers pair, and the Mr. Barrett and Ms. Nightwish pair. As such, she continued walking.

MICHAEL LEE
The Gentle Water Mancer

CHAPTER I,
Part I:

"Behind the Vale"
.

She seemed so strict, and spoke as though she really didn't care for his beliefs and concluded that he'd have to fight in a match eventually, no matter what. "B-but..." It was too late, she was already walking away to watch the matches. Michael sighed to himself. Glancing again at the bottle, he relaxed himself and tried to remain calm, settling the waves in the bottle. He looked up at the teacher he was expected to do... Something with. At this point he'd no clue what to expect. He looked back toward where he saw the woman last for a few seconds, then turned back and looked up at the teacher. Michael's eyes had softened by that point, one of disappointment and sadness. Disappointment that he'd seemingly left such a poor first impression on the principle, and sadness that he'd have to eventually fight anyway, despite his own belief. "... You're not going to make me fight, are you...?" His voice reflected his eyes, almost distant at this point. Were his original thoughts wrong? Were they just going to try to turn him into a warrior instead of help him control his powers?

Nicholas W. Skye

Gymnasium

Nicholas really had only one idea on how to find his partner, but it probably wouldn't work. I guess I should at least try... he thought. He focused on the two boys in front of him.

"We're getting another Igna?" one said. "And a Skye?"
The other boy nodded. "Guess so. Remember Jason Skye?"
"The one who almost defeated an Igna? I remember him good."
"I mean, I would be shocked if he won. Skyes are pretty good at combat, but remember when one of those Ignas - forgot who - took out a Hydromacer in like, three hits?"
"Yeah, those two Maristella and Indigo kids are-"

He was interuppted by Nicholas, who asked "Do you know where I can find Maristella Riley?"
The boys shrugged their shoulders. "So you're that Skye kid? Yeah, you look like Jason, actually," one of them said. It took a few seconds for Nicholas to remember that Jason was his cousin! The boy continued. "Anyway, I have no clue where she is."
"Me neither," the other one replied.

"I do," another female student chimed in. "Look for the girl who..." She then gave a brief, though helpful description of Maristella. Nicholas was too desperate to ask how she knew that. The girl finished by saying to look over there, pointing to the left of the four students.

"Your wel-" she said, but was interrupted by an announcement.
"The battlefield for Shion Igna and Indigo Rodgers has been decided," the woman announced, with a small tone of suprise in her voice, "Their fight shall take place in the second Earth field."

Almost everyone flocked to the Earth field to watch the battle. Only a few people stayed behind, and Nicholas hoped Maristella was one of them. He looked to his left and saw about six or seven girls. He scanned all of them to see if one was Maristella. Luckily, the fifth one fit the girl's description.

Nicholas approached the girl and simply asked, "Are you Maristella Reily?"

Crystal Nightwish

Gym

___________________________

As the pyromancers match began and advanced, Crystal was amazed by the power they displayed, but at the same time she was confused, the more she looked, the more it seemed that she was looking at a roadside show, instead of a combat.

-So much power, but such a waste of magic- Crystal mumbled to herself -It just looks like they are showing of, instead of taking this seriously-

As Crystal continued to watch the match, she suddenly heard someone adressing her, when she looked down she noticed a boy making a small bow before speaking to her, "I assume that you are Crystal. I'm Jason. Pleasure to meet you.", Crystal smiled and giggled a bit at the bowing gesture. -Well he is polite and kinda funny.- Crystal tough to herself.

-Give me a second, i will be down in a moment.- Crystal sat on the pillar and this began to shirk down as the material once again began to cover her arms and back as the pillar dissapeared completely. -There we go now thats better.-

Crystal looked at Jason noticing how tall he was compared to her. -Wow, you are huge, uhhh sorry i didn't meant to be rude.- Crystal smiled a bit before clearing her throat. -Yes i am Crystal, which means im your partner for this evaluation.-

Crystal was toughtfull for a moment before looking back at Jason. -So where would you like to carry out our little evaluation?- As they stood there Crystal continued to take small glaces at the pyromancers fight, but was quickly losing interest as it continued to be just an over the top display of raw power just for show.

Jason Barrett - Which one?

Jason smiled more as Crystal spoke to him, even chuckling when she commented about his size. True, he was taller than most but it didn't mean much to him. Instead he was mesmerized by her long hair and brown eyes. Entranced, in fact, that he almost didn't hear her question about which field they should use. He shook his head, bringing his mind back to the task at hand.

The only field picked was one of the earth fields. The others were available, but he had second thoughts about them. The air field, for one, was too imbalanced for either to use. The water field would hinder both of them equally, but there may be the possibility of them drowning. The fire field would hurt them both, but him more than her. The metal field may be best, but the earth field was a logical second choice. Problem was that he didn't want Crystal to think that he'd pick earth just to give her an advantage and get her mad at him. Metal had to be the way to go!

He thought about it and smiled back at her, "Well, how about the caged field? It'd be close-quarters and I don't need to use the cage for spells or nothing." He then turned to the fight that most of the others were watching. "I must say, though, that I'm not really looking forward to this," he said to her softly, "I'm not much of a combatant or anything. I was taught to show respect, especially to ladies such as yourself."

Maristella Reilly

Aris's thoughts were spiralling out of control when a male voice snapped her out of her thoughts. Strangely, the only thing she only really responded to when lost in her mind was her name.

"Are you Maristella Reilly?" the figure said. Aris blinked twice, before nodding to simultaneously indicate her affirmative and shake herself awake. Why was the person talking to her? Aris racked her brain before recalling something about an evaluation. They was probably her opponent or something, considering the people sparring a little bit away. Aris quickly glanced the person over, figuring them to be Sky, as that was the name she heard directly after hers. They looked young compared to those around her who could easily be legal adults, about her age if she had to estimate. They had electric blue eyes and unusually sky blue hair that definitely had be dyed but looked unusual natural on them, but that wasn't what struck her.

"You aren't a girl," the words tumbled out of Aris's mouth before she could stop herself. Normally she was nicer in these conversations, but hey, she was still a little out of it. "I'm sorry," she apologized immediately afterwards. Instead of explaining, however, she just continued to barrel on with the conversation. "Please, just call me Aris. You must be my opponent. Sky, is it?" Sky was a weird name for a boy, but she guessed for an Airmancer it was vaguely fitting. Although she was a little bit scared by the irony, she was almost completely sure about his powers now, considering his eyes and hair. Vaguely she wondered what she would like with blue hair to match her Watermancing powers. Or would that be transparent? Maybe translucent? Enough water did look blue, but was that the water or the sky? Either way, she would look really awful. Ocean blue eyes, on the other hand...

Shima Aono - Battle On!

The Gymnasium

Shima listened as the headmaster announced the duel pairs. It was hardly boring. Shima had finally found a place were she could use her powers without being called 'possessed' or 'cursed child'. She might even find someone like her, but that was in the back of her mind. For now she was focused on a win. She listened carefully, and got more and more excited. It was impossible to contain, so she fiddled with her left wristband. Breaking it apart, she made seven acupuncture needles, and molded them back around her arm into a wristband. How she loved acupuncture needles. Their sharp edges, the slim, needle-like look, the deadly efficiency. Her eyes twinkled at the thought, and she began to replay the lovely figure in her mind. Hypnotized by her own thoughts, she nearly jumped for joy at the next pair.

"Yuri Kimishi versus Shima Aono." The headmaster called.

Yuri? I wonder who she is. She thought to herself. She left her area to serch for the girl, having no idea where she could be. This had better be worth my time. She thought. There were all kinds of kids, each one having a unique talent like her, but if she wanted to impress she needed a strong opponent. According to the headmaster, there were different elements fot talents. If I remember correctly, the elements are Earth, Fire, Water, Air, and Metal. She reminded herself. Shima looked around. There were also element fields, designed to aid that specific element. She thought about this, and decided to let her opponent, Yuri, choose the field. After all, if Shima had a disadvantage and won, think of all the glory she'd get.

"Yuri Kimishi and Shima Aono!"

I almost jump out of fright as my name is called. That's fine, I'm fine now. I look around for where I'm supposed to go, but in the end I require help from teacher. I'm several minutes late, due to my lack in direction. I'm so scared.

I shuffle across the field to my position. I tie back my long blue hair and fix up my skirt so I don't look to rough.
"Um... I'm Yuri, but you can call me Shiemi," I say nervously as I step into place.
