Maristella Reilly & (Zane Reav)

"My ... my name's Aris," Aris replied, having a better look at Zane. His eyes were ice blue, making him so stereotypically handsome with his hair it was almost disturbing. She pondered this topic for a second, before trying to look for answers. "You wouldn't happen to have any idea of why I'm in the infirmary, would you?"

The girl who introduced herself as Aris seemed to not know why she was here, in the infirmary. It struck Zane as a bit odd, but didn't seem to be too hard to believe. Normally, he wouldn't even give the time of day in such a situation, but he had already been in a bit of a suspicious turn of events already, so he didn't want to draw anymore attention to himself. "I'm sorry; I really don't know why you're here. Do you remember what happened before you woke up?"

Aris thought about it for a second, recalling something about the sky and whether clouds were more related to air or water. She quickly stopped herself from falling down that train of thought again, before something came to her. "Oh, something about the evaluations. I was searching for the person I needed to do something with. I don't know if I found him or not, though. I think I would probably remember something like that. There's a chance, I guess. It's happened before with boring people. The only thing I know for sure is that my head kinda aches." She gingerly brushed her fingertips along the back of her head, only to find it hurt significantly less than it had before. They must have some kinda witchcraft medicine here or something.

Zane wasn't exactly sure what could've happened to her, but one thing was certain: she seemed to have some sort of head trauma. The reason he figured it was head trauma was pretty obvious, but the symptoms reminded him of something his dad called a concussion. He remembered that people who had suffered concussions often felt confused, dazed, and sometimes had short term memory loss, which could explain why she didn't seem to know what happened. Right before Zane was about to speak, a quick shuffling noise came from the bed beside him, then a voice followed.

"Hey! This is an infirmary, not a playroom. Here I am bleeding out, minding my own business while trying to rest and all I hear is arguments and questions. Now, could you be quit or just leave. And where's the nurse?! I'm dying over here."

The little outburst came from Christian, who then fell immediately back into his unresponsive coma-like state. Zane just sighed at his comments, and returned his attention to Aris. "Maybe we should continue our conversation outside. This is an infirmary, after all." he whispered.

Aris nodded, feeling a bit guilty. She tried to sit up in her bed, but a sharp pain flooded her brain and she collapsed back down. "Maybe a few more minutes?" Aris asked. "Just let me rest for a second so I can get just get my bearings again." Aris then turned to the black-haired boy, still unsure of his identity. As far as she could tell, he was an automatic robot who yelled at those making a fuss. There were stranger things in this institute. He probably wasn't a boy, I mean, who fell asleep on their stomach? Aris thought it would be pretty useful, for sure, but Aris wasn't quite sure why he didn't go off when she had just woken up and Zane and that other boy were ... doing something she didn't quite understand, but it was probably loud. "What is he, anyways? He seems broken." Aris questioned, gesturing towards the boy.

"Don't mind him, he's just, you know, dying. I'm sure he'll be better once the nurse comes in. That reminds me, where is the nurse? I'd bet she could answer your questions a lot better than I could." Zane paused. He was a bit perplexed as to why she phrased her last statement the way she did. Was she under some delusion that Christian wasn't normal? Did she see their match earlier, because that was the only thing that Zane could've figured she meant. His brow gave away a very slight furrow, but not enough of one to break his illusionary glee. "So, wait a second. What do you mean 'what is he'? He's just a mancer like you and me."

Aris assumed Zane was being sarcastic with his first statements, as that was a bit overexaggerating to call it dying. She was a bit interested in the next bit of the question, though "I mean like, I've seen a lot of crazy stuff in Vale, but nothing mechanical. Especially not mechanical mancers." Aris paused in thought. Maybe the mancer was part robot? What was that called? A cyber? Yeah, something like that. "Actually, there was the cage thing, but that isn't quite the same." Each arena she saw was based off an element, but she couldn't figure out what that one was, as it seemed the close quarters were blatantly unfair to everyone. Maybe a sort of neutral thing?

"Which of the four elements is he?" Aris questioned, before something occurred to her. "Which are you, actually?" She was surprised that Zane didn't mention it as he mentioned his name. In this school, she felt it was something you would just do naturally, like how when you were younger, you would naturally say your age with your name, because that was what was considered important. Then again, she didn't do it either. "I'm a watermancer, by the way."

Zane was becoming increasingly aware of Aris' naivety, which wasn't necessarily a bad thing as muc has it was useful. Ways to string her along would be many times more numerous for such an individual, but for now he'd maintain his goody two shoes bit. "I think that you may be talking about the metal users. I remember seeing someone turning parts of their body into metal, which is also what I'm guessing the cage is supposed to be for."

The next set of questions she had were a bit harder for him to answer, seeing how he had just learned about himself right before entering the infirmary. He wanted to enlighten her in a way that wouldn't come off as showy, but the simple fact was that his and Christian's elements were showy in their nature. "Well, I don't think he's any of the normal elements. That's what one of the teachers said, at least. I think his element is something like darkness. As for me, I'm a user of light. For example," he paused to start up a Flashbang. The glow of the spell began, but before it could detonate he ended the spell. "I can glow." he laughed. "Pretty cool, huh?"

Aris listened intently to Zane's not-lecture, curious about this magic thing. At the end, she considered it a little, before asking. "So you and him are unique, like light and dark sworn enemies slash best friends from all of the movies and books? That's pretty cool, I guess." Considering she hadn't really seen any magic in action, she wasn't sure whether to be impressed by lightbulb-Zane or not. She mused over everything Zane had told her quietly, twirling her hair around her finger, before speaking up. "I still don't get that metal thing, though."

Not only did she seem to be a bit naive, but strangely she seemed stubborn as well. That was more of a problem to Zane than anything. In a world of magic he'd figured anybody would believe almost anything, but he guessed that there were probably more than a few people like Aris who wouldn't believe it till they saw it themselves. With little to talk about on the remaining subject he started to wonder what they could talk about. A few things came to mind, but ultimately he was stumped. His mind reverted back to seeing if Aris could stand up now that she had rested a bit longer. "By any chance do you think you can stand now? I can help you if you want."

Aris blinked, before trying to sit up again. Her head still ached a bit, but it was significantly better. Her body seemed in fine condition, though, so she slowly tried sliding off the bed. It was only at this point she realized she was still wearing her bright yellow sneakers. That was strange that she didn't notice earlier, as the weight probably should've felt strange. Aris took a few tentative steps, her arms stretched out like she was trying to walk for the first time. Afterwards she paused, looked thoughtful, and nodded. "I should fine. Thanks, though." She carefully walked to the entrance of the infirmary, glancing down the hallway before turning to Zane sheepishly. "I don't actually know where to go from here, though. I don't remember how to get back to the arena place or anywhere else."

Relief struck Zane when he saw that Aris could stand on her own. He only said he'd help to continue his facade, but as she started to walk out of the infirmary she impeded his plans. Since he'd already offered to help, he was left with little choice in the matter, so naturally he decided to oblige, reluctantly of course. "No problem, I think I have a pretty good grasp of the school's layout." He took a few steps towards the door, glancing back at Christian for a moment before a loud beep sounded over the intercom.

"Attention new students, please gather on the second floor near the classrooms. I repeat, please gather on the second floor near the classrooms. Once there you will be given your classroom number and for those who have yet to settle their living arrangements they will be handled appropriately."

Aris looked towards Zane. "I don't suppose you know how to get to the second floor. Or are we already on the second floor?"

"Nope, we're still on the first floor." he mused. "I do remember passing some stairs on the way here, so I'd bet that would be a good place to start." He gestured towards the door, trying to imply the whole ladies first way of thinking.

Aris carefully walked out, still a little unsteady and missing Zane's hint. She turned to him and asked, "So, which way was it?"

Zane should've known better than to assume Aris would catch his hint. He walked out the door first. Once out in the halls he gestured her to follow him, but this time he didn't leave it at that. "Follow me, it's this way." Hopefully, she would do as he said, but regardless he walked down the hall. He glanced back, once again, to see if she had indeed followed him like he asked.

Aris dutifully followed Zane like he asked, glancing about the hallway as she did. The hallway looked like a standard school hallway, she supposed. Maybe a little fancier than usual (although fancier than usual meant not stained with blurred out graffiti), but pretty normal. She wondered how old the school was. She had saw a lot of older kids, so that meant they weren't the first generation, but there wasn't much more than that. As she wondered about how old mancing traced back to (maybe those fantasy books she had read about were really nonfiction?), soon the odd pair of them arrived at the stairs. Zane didn't hesitate in climbing up, and Aris followed afterwards. It only took a few moments for them to reach the second floor, and it didn't seem like there were that many people walking around yet.

Upon a little more investigation, Zane noticed a man at an oddly placed desk a bit further down the hall. He recognized as the man to be the one who had escorted him and Christian earlier. One Paul Sandford, as he recalled. Immediately, Zane thought that he was the person they needed to see. They both continued down the hall approaching the teacher sitting at the desk. Unlike before, he just smiled and asked them for their names, even though he more than likely already knew their names. "I'm Zane Reav, and this is..."

"Maristella Reilly," Aris added as Zane paused, obviously at a lost to her full name.

The teacher looked through a few sheets on the desk, finally looking back at the students. "How about that. You're both in class 101. You can find the room a few doors down on the left. You'll find another teacher in there who will instruct you further." Zane nodded while Aris gave a small smile in thanks. Together they headed to the classroom, while Aris wondered about the strange numbering system in this place. Who put classroom 101 on the second floor, anyways? Then again, maybe there weren't any classes on the first floor ... But there was the infirmary, which was still a room, so it should've been numbered. What was the infirmary numbered? Was it even numbered?

Quickly they found the room, as it was indeed just a few doors down. A man, probably a teacher, was leaning against door frame. "Hello - my name is Dr. DeMuere, take a seat." Aris nodded in acknowledgement as she followed his instructions, picking a desk somewhere near the front-middle of the room and sitting down, while Zane also nodded and obliged by taking the window seat in the far back.

Indigo Terrance Rogers --- Hallways / Room 101

Indigo trudged solemnly through the hallways, searching for something, maybe his dorm, maybe someone to talk to, maybe anything. He was not all too sure himself. He was finding it to be a bit of a hassle, moving around on the crutches but he was sure to get used to it. He felt a bit depressed to be honest, but it wasn't the crutches mind you, no it was due to the fact that he, for the first time in a very long time, felt genuinely lonely. Everything had been such a fast and bustling experience since his guardian, Davidson's, funeral. He hadn't really had time to think on it. It was almost like when his parents had abandoned him on the streets... here he was, wandering, alone, the only person left on his side was him and the only other people who had bothered to care about him were long gone.

It might have seemed a bit self-pitiful of him to think such things. After all, the teachers were there if he needed help... and he was almost certain he'd already attracted a fairly large battalion of fine young ladies to dote over him... but none of them, teachers and fangirls both, really knew him. They weren't his trusted allies, they weren't his friends. The teachers were taking care of him because it was their job... the fangirls only liked him for outward appearances and pointless personality fronts. To put it plainly, for the first time ever since he was a child, not a single person on the entire planet cared deeply about Indigo. That was enough to make him feel lonely and, yes, a little bit depressed.

"Maybe Blondie was right... I mean it's not like I'm actually qualified to be here..." Indigo stopped moving for a moment and grasped the dog tag around his neck tightly. "What were you thinking Davidson? Why did you get me in here?... How did you get me in here?" Indigo began to channel heat energy into the dog tag before feeling his own skin burning and quickly letting go. "I suppose what's important is that... you DID in fact get me in here, didn't you?" Indigo smiled wryly and nodded to himself. "You said your final gift was this..."second chance at life" didn't you? Well I can't say I've been doing your wishes justice so far... now have I?"

"Maybe a bit of loneliness stings, but if anybody can deal with it it's me. Right? Right!" Indigo grasps his crutches tightly and smirks with a newly discovered confidence before continuing to move through the halls of Vale, his depressive state replaced with a spring in his limping step.

As Indigo continued to explore he heard the announcement played over the intercom and quickly began to search for the nearest staircase, eager to meet his new class.

***

Taking a little longer than he would have liked, Indigo eventually found his way to the classrooms he was searching for and was greeted by a man, presumably a teacher who asked his name. With a smile that held perhaps too much excitement and pride, Indigo answered. "Indigo... I'm Indigo Terrance Rogers. You've been expecting me?" The man replied in turn. "Indeed we have Mr. Rogers..." He gestured to a room behind him. "Room 101" Indigo bowed gently in response. "Thank you sir, I'll head straight inside."

When Indigo saw Zane and the girl from the infirmary inside waiting for him, one might expect that he'd be upset or annoyed... but no. He had reassured himself and Zane would not get the pleasure of angering him twice. So he smiled broadly at the blonde haired young man as he stepped inside the room, before turning to meet who he presumed was another teacher on greeting duty.

"Hello - my name is Dr. DeMuere, take a seat."

Indigo nodded. "Pleasure to meet you Doctor, I presume anywhere is fine..." As he limped his way towards his chosen seat, two rows from the front, second seat on the left, he waved in a friendly manner at Zane and winked charmingly at the girl from earlier. He then carefully lowered himself down and awaited the arrival of his other classmates.

Crystal Nightwish

Dorms -> 2nd floor Classroom - Class 101
________________________________

Crystal was simply laying on the bed resting, but after what felt like hours to her, but probably was more like just minuetes, she awoke to a loud announcement. "Attention new students, please gather on the second floor near the classrooms. I repeat, please gather on the second floor near the classrooms. Once there you will be given your classroom number and for those who have yet to settle their living arrangements they will be handled appropriately."

Crystal listened to the anouncement intently, but with a bored look on her face. -I didn't know the rooms had speakers, well that's a bother.- Crystal stood up, noticing her body still felt heavy and a bit unresponsive, but she managed to get herself to the door of her room and steped out, in search for the place the announcement had indicated.

After wandering around the building for quite a while, she finaly got to the second floor and saw an odly placed desk in the hall with a man sitting there, so she assumed that was the place so she headed there. When she arrived she steadied herself on the desk while looking at the man, who she now recognized as one of the teachers at the gym. The man looked at her and asked for her name. -Crystal Nightwish- she answered looking around the hall, noticing some of the other students passing by. "Ah yes, here you are, class 101, it's right there." The teacher pointed to a room gesturing for her to go inside. Crystal just looked at the teacher, shruged and turned around to head for the room. -Thank you.-

As Crystal got to the classroom, she noticed a few other studdents where all ready there, but didnt recognized any of them untill she saw Indigo, who she recognized as the student that got pounded by the pyromancer girl. She was startled a bit when she noticed the person standing in front of her. Looking at him she knew it was a teacher and he promply introduced himself. "Hello- my name is Dr. DeMuere, take a seat."

Crystal stood there, without sayign anything, before looking at the seats and with out a word headed to the seat nearest to the door in the second row and sat resting her hands on the desk, and then her head trying to doze off and get some more rest while the other students arrived at the classroom.

Yuri "Shiemi" - Class 101 (I'll neaten it up later)

"Attention all students!" The voice of a woman rang throughout the building echoing in every corner and area vibrating into a melodic one note tone, not as beautiful as one may assume by the adjective melodic, yet it was some form of son got be sure. Yuri shuffle along the corridors, gazing at doors throughout her journey, admiring each small segment of the building. She arrived at the stairs and with a swift step she climbed the stairs; it was more of a run unbeknownst to her due to her build-up of excitement, never to be released to the public eye. At the top were a small crowd of people checking a board, which upon closer examination tells which classes people belong to. Immediately, before checking her own, she noticed Shima's name in class two. She looked upon the boards yet found no such name as Yuri upon it's listings. She then noticed Lia was also in the same class as Shima. Her heart sunk at the thought of not being with her new friends Lia and Shima. But life has its way of hurting you now and then.

She tried to stay positive, as it was a chance to make another new friend. Her eyes dropped at the image of herself trying to make another friend, a cold sweat dripping down her face as she daydreamed of asking someone for a nice warm cup of tea, and then the person being offered turns around and slices her head off. She gulped as she continued to wander the corridors in search of class 1.

She pushed open the door carefully, noticing several people in the class already, and she sat at a desk at the end sulking as she slumped her head on her hands and stared out of the window. Such rotten luck.

Lia Campani - Class 102

Lia gave off a quiet sigh of dissapointment as Sytano walked out the door. She kicked her legs out on top of the coffee table and lay back in her chair. Wonder when class is gonna start? Worn out from the seemingly protracted day, the tired girl closed her eyes to try and catch some rest. Shifing around ever so often she soon found a comforable position when suddenly an incredibly loud noise pierced her ears. The buzz of the intercom rang throughout the empty recreational lounge. "Godamn it..." She groaned as a very authoratative voice spoke through the speakers.

"Attention new students, please gather on the second floor near the classrooms. I repeat, please gather on the second floor near the classrooms. Once there you will be given your classroom number and for those who have yet to settle their living arrangements they will be handled appropriately." Lia stared at the ceiling, contimplating on whether to go to class or not. I already skipped the evaluations, so might as well not start off on too bad of a foot. Muttering swears as she did, the drained girl grabbed her bag, hopped off the chair, and strolled on out the door.

"I guess this leads to the second floor." Lia found herself at the bottom of the steps in the main building of the school. Breathing in deeply she leapt from step to step, reaching the top in no time. She grinned as memories of doing stadiums during practice accumulated. "Hello there!" A much too enthusastic voice called out to her. Lia looked to her left where she found a man, presumably a teacher, sitting a table. "You're a first year student right?" Nodding her head she walked towards the teacher, now recognizing him as one of the instructors she had seen in the gym. "Give me your name please." He looked up from his papers giving the least geniune smile she had seen in ages. "Lia Campani." She replied stoutly as the man rolled his finger down the list until he gave it a halt. "Class 102, second door on your left." Another smile, this time with an exagratted artificial look to it. "Thank you, sir." She said almost sarcastically before she spun around towards the class to which she was assigned.

An excited grin broke out across the giddy teen's face as her stomach filled with butterflies. She was finally in her first class where she would meet many of her peers. Lia exhaled slowly before tentatively opening the door. Inside she found an empty room with only a teacher reclining at their desk. A dissapointed frown was now swapped with the smile that she had so eargly worn. Must have gotten here a little early. Silently she shuffled over to the door nearest to her and sat down. Giving a tired huff she reveled out loud to herself. "Class sure is empty huh?"

Oscar DeMuere

Oscar sighed. The flow of students seemed to slow down as more and more arrived, and he didn't really feel like waiting much longer. Closing the door behind him, he sighed, then muttered. "Three... Four... Five. Alright, I guess that's fine." He sat on an empty, brown desk in the front of the room; specifically the teacher's desk. With a bit more cheer, Oscar began to speak. "Alright then. You're all here because you have magical abilities, but you already know that. Apparently, my job is to show you the basics. But the thing is, you're probably going to find out a lot of things as you go along that I may or may not tell you. Is this laziness on my part? Not really. This school is just weird like that.

"First things first. There are five basic elements; Fire, Water, Air, Earth, and Metal. There are also two other elements, which are pretty much Light and Darkness. Well, I mean..." He grinned. "I'm not sure if those are the two correct names for it, but this year we have both of those elements, which is pretty damn rare. Anyways, each one of you presumably controls one out of those seven, as you should already know. If you don't, I can't begin to fathom why you're here. Myself... I'll tell you what I manipulate later. Now, the rules.

"You all look like you've been in school long enough, so let's be honest, you probably don't need to hear those. Besides, rules change with the teacher." He put his two hands out like a scale. "On one end of the spectrum, I personally don't care if you're texting or flirting or whatever in class, as long as you're not making a scene. If you are, I'll send you somewhere else or something. On the other end of the spectrum, you got one of those teachers who tell you that you can't do anything that distracts you from class and take electronic devices like no tomorrow. My personal philosophy is that if you're doing it to yourself, fine. You can fail, and I still get my check at the end of the month."

He let out a breath of relief. "I think that's out of the way. Not going to go over my personal class rules, since I can go over that on the day you actually have my class. Just don't anger me or anyone else in this room, really. Now for out of class stuff..." His face brightened up. "This is the important part, so pay attention.

"Every day you will learn new skills in class. These can range from spells..." He grinned as he found a gallon of water and let the water out into a general spherical shape, then began to move it with one hand. Without letting it fall, he moved his hand away from it and grabbed a large bag of green dirt- about the size of two bags of mulch. "Especially made for these classrooms, for our convenience. We need to tell which dirt is different from another group's dirt, when doing projects/control tests." Making a three foot diameter globe by manipulating the dirt and splashing water on it, he left it spinning in the air. It was perfectly accurate; all the little details from all the Indonesian isles to the general topography of the American Rockies. "And we are right here, by the way." He made a small impression on the general location of Vale, and left it slowly spinning in the air. He then whispered- "Trade secret, it's hollow.

"Anyways, you won't learn how to do that on day two, obviously. That comes with learning and control. Regardless, you will learn new spells as we go along in the year. I would demonstrate, but currently I have no reason too, as well as I would need to be on the ground floor to show off better. The spells can be used recreationally, and each and every student has the opportunity as well as capability to learn different element-ed spells. Be careful, however... the more elements you learn to manipulate, the less control you have for each one.

"But alas, these spells we teach you are to help you in battle." The water and dirt separated and turned into two separate figurines [water and dirt], which seemed to be locked in combat as DeMuere ate a potato chip. "The duel this morning... did you think that was hard? Well, you'll be doing that every day after class now, so you better not screw up. It's to gauge your improvement and whatnot here, too, and if you got away with not doing it then you probably won't get the same pity next time.

"There's a recreational lounge that houses a field other than the ten you saw today. It's a special neutral field, designed for those who want to test their abilities after class is over. There are also various things to find by just venturing and finding students or teachers; some have secrets that may be in your favor. I also encourage everyone here to come see me after class on any given day, before the scheduled matches." He popped a potato chip in his mouth as the figurines now acted out the role of a teacher and student, speaking. "But never mind that." The figurines now became larger and smaller respectively, showing a student eating food. "The cafeteria is open during most meal hours. If you miss a meal, well, I can't really help you... but..." He trailed off semi-suggestively before closing it with, "...there are vending machines.

"For everyone who needs some printouts of what- generally- I said, you can check out this stack of papers. Anyhow, are there any questions? Ask me anything, I won't yell at you." He patted the stack of papers next to him and waited for questions patiently while the water and earth returned to the gallon and bag of dirt. "Oh!" He exclaimed, before anyone asked. "Before anyone asks, yes, I am a doctor. I'd rather not reveal in what, but I am. And no one leaves till' I say so, which isn't right now, unless you don't have any questions..."

JOINT POST FOR JASON BARRETT/NATHAN STEELE

Jason was finally calming down from his skirmish with Crystal. It seemed too abrupt for him to leave so quickly. He didn't even check on her well-being. "Maybe I sould check on her," he thought and walked back into the gym. Quickly returning to the edge of the field where he fought, he didn't see her. She may be at the infirmary? He turned to another boy, who was nearby, and asked "Do you know where the infirmary is?"

Nathan was still hanging around the gym and he couldn't believe he wasn't able of sweeping this girl. Just how in the world did she fight up with him? Were his skills that low? He was deep in thought and was a little surprised when a boy asked him where the infirmary was. Did he look like a nurse or something?? He was going to give an harsh reply but he decided against that when he noticed that this guy was also a Metal user. "Hmm, I don't really think so but let's take a look around to see if we can find it.

Jason nodded, glad to find someone that was kind enough to help him. Usually the guys about his age were pompous jerks, but this guy seemed to be on the level. "Alright, then," he said, turning around, "lets go take a look around." Soon he was out the door, walking slow enough for the guy to keep up with him.

"I'm Jason, by the way," he said as they approached the school building. "What's your name?"

His lying skills were definitely top-notch as the boy didn't doubt him at all. Quite honestly, he didn't really want friends, he just needed a few sparring partners that knew how to fight so he could get better himself.  The boy was walking a little slow, maybe because he got injured. Then he asked for his name.

"Nice to meet you, my name is Nathan Steele and I control the Metal element."

"Nice to meet you, as well," Jason smiled as he walked, "Even more so to meet a fellow ferromancer." His mind once again thinking upon the fellow's name. Nathan Steele, Crystal Nightwish...how many people were named for their skill? Jason felt unusually cheerful about that concept and felt a chuckle within him. He kept it contained for now as they entered the building.

As they went door-to-door searching for the infirmary, Jason decided to break the ice once again. "How did your duel go today?" he asked out of the blue, "Hopefully you performed better than I did." He smiled as he thought back to Crystal, but hoped she was ok.

Nathan continued walking normally as the boy was talking to him. That is until he mentioned his duel. He was still upset that he didn't beat his opponent. He closed his eyes. "It didn't go as expected. Looks like the people here are more talented than I thought. Should be interesting." He opened his eyes and smirked.

Jason nodded as Nathan spoke to him. Sounded like his was a battle he lost. He smiled as he responded to him, "Its alright, though. There are plenty of other duels to win. Just gotta keep your confidence up." As he saw another door to a classroom, the announcement blared over the speaker system to head to the second floor for their classroom assignment. He turned to the boy and shrugged, "The search for the infirmary has to wait. I need to get my class list."

Nathan smiled, looks like this guy could prove to be a worthy partner after all. He had confidence and looked like he wasn't a fan of giving up easily like him. The announcement blared in the speakers. "Okay then, you go first."

Jason nodded and turned, "Alright...let's go." Hoping that Nathan was right behind him, he walked down the corridors until he saw a flight of stairs. He walked up quickly, excited by this new opportunity to meet some people. He got to the top, where there was quite a bit of activity in progress, specifically around a desk with an older (at least to him) gentleman sitting behind it. He saw a line to the desk and simply waited for his turn. As he approached the desk, Jason nodded and said, "Hello. Is this where I find my class?"

"Yes, it is," he responded before looking down at the list, "Name?"

"Jason Barrett, sir."

"Jason...Jason..." he mumbled as his eyes flew across the page. Finally finding the name, he looked up and smiled. "Looks like you'll be in class 101."

"Thank you, sir," Jason politely said, nodding a thanks as well. He then stood to the side for Nathan. That way, if they had the same class, they could keep their conversation going.

Nathan followed Jason in the stairs until they arrived in front of a desk where an old man was handing out sheets of paper that had the students' classroom number. He wondered where he ended. He waited after Jason was done and approached. The gentleman looked up at him and smiled.

"Your name please?"

"Nathan Steele."

The man searched carefully for his name on the paper until he found it. "Ah, you're in class 102."

Nathan bowed. "Thank you mister." After that, he looked at Jason. "Looks like we'll be in different classes."

Jason felt a little disappointed about them being in separate classrooms. He nodded and smiled at Nathan, "Well, then, I guess its time to go our separate ways. It was nice meeting you, Nathan." He held out a hand for him to shake. "Who knows? Maybe we'll meet each other on the battlefield one of these days," he said with a smirk, kinda hoping that would fire him up.

Nathan smirked back at Jason. "I do hope to fight you one day but I'll warn you, I never hold back." He took the hand of the boy and shook it while looking at him in the eyes. "See you soon then."

With that said, Jason nodded and walked hurriedly to the classroom. He saw many other students sitting around as the teacher stood and spoke to them. As he saw the teacher standing in silence, evidently waiting for someone to speak, he walked into the classroom and quickly grabbed a seat at the first empty desk nearest the door. "Sorry for being late," he said with a smile,"What did I miss?"

Oscar DeMuere

"Mmph, if you haven't noticed, almost everything." The crunch of chips could be heard as DeMuere put another one in his mouth, followed with DeMuere putting the bag down on the desk and walking over to the late kid. Placing a hand over the kid's shoulder, he began to speak. "There was a thing I had forgotten in my speech; being tardy." He looked straight into the kid's eyes. "Although I do not care about you learning per-say, I do care about you having just as much of a learning opportunity as anyone. Then it's all on you." Suddenly, water burst out of it's gallon and the dirt ran out to meet DeMuere from it's sacks again; this time, the water turned into a person, the dirt a chair, a desk, and a dunce cap. This figurine was displayed in a smaller form than the rest, next to DeMuere. "But if you don't get here on time, my conscience will be shattered for not letting you learn!" He walked towards the front of the class, the dirt and water figurines following him around.

"So I must repair that, obviously. Like I had said, rules- as well as consequences- change by teachers. Don't mean to bring ya' into the spotlight, kid, but you're the first late of the year; luckily, since it's the first day, you can just take one of the handouts. It has everything you need, without the visuals- you can ask the others for how good, or bad, it was. Normally, however, your penalty is staying after classes- and duels- for all the time you missed. I recommend you get here on time the next time if you don't want that to happen..." The dirt and water dissipated then and returned to their respective origins. "Regardless, any more questions? Any and all questions will be answered, unless I said otherwise."

A.J.

A chibi Harry Potter hanging from a Jigglypuff and casting spells at a chibi Darth Vader probably didn't make much sense, but hey, it was art. It didn't need to make sense.

A.J. sat there, doodling in one of her notebooks. The teacher, DeMuere, was doing his introductions and making an example out of a tardy student. A.J. was half listening, but she wasn't all that interested in what was going on. She never really had to worry about getting into trouble, and apparently this teacher didn't care much for explaining the rules anyways. She also didn't need to listen to him explain the basics of magic. She had grown up in a town filled with casters. She'd learned the basics a decade ago. Apparently this school wasn't used to having new students already trained in the magical arts, though.

It vexed her that she'd likely have to wait a few weeks before she started to learn anything new in class, but she was patient. It allowed her to sit back, relax, and examine her classmates. By the time they started to pay attention to the competition, she'd already have most of them figured out. That gave her an advantage, so it helped to balance out her annoyance.

A.J. was a little curious when DeMuere gave the advice to actually wander and discover some of the secrets that certain casters around the school coveted. Finding literal secrets to success? Wandering and learning about other people and how they function? That was certainly her kind of thing. She decided that she might take DeMuere up on his offer to train with him after classes. She had a feeling she might get along with this guy. If not, discussing secrets and strategies would be enough for her.

A.J. lifted her eyes from her drawing and turned her attention to the windows. There was a gentle breeze blowing through the air. She could sense it; she could feel it wafting through the trees. She could almost hear the leaves rustling in the wind. Oh gods it was a beautiful feeling. It made her want to just get up and walk outside.

Looking at the light bending through the trees in the distance, A.J. wondered if Vance felt just as bored as she did, wherever he was. He knew just as much about magic as she did. They'd trained together their entire lives. They were both highly skilled for their age.

A.J. instinctively touched her hand to the scar on her right eye, which was hidden beneath her hair.

They were both skilled, but not skilled enough.

Alma shook the memories from her mind, returning her attention to the classroom. Perhaps something remotely interesting would happen soon. Hopefully.

Sytano Morgan & Shima Aono

Shima walked down the hall toward the classrooms after hearing the announcement. Humph. Guess everyone's done with their evaluations. She headed back toward the classrooms, knowing where to go since she'd already visited them. She looked at the numbers on the thresholds, and entered room 102. She looked around the room and stood off to the side.

Sytano looked up from his seat when he saw someone else enter. Well, hello number two. Knowing it would be awkward to just sit there and wait for another person to converse with, he turned around to look at them. He stretched carefully, getting up and going to her. "Well, um, hello." He blushed slightly and scratched his neck. This is quickly more awkward than I thought it would be.

Shima turned to face the boy who had just walked toward her. She turned back to face the front of the room before speaking. "Hello. What do you want?" She asked, giving him another glance. Who is this, I wonder. She turned back and gave him a smile. "I'm Shima by the way."

Although she looked away there for a moment... I guess it's fine. He smiled back cheerfully. "I'm Sytano Morgan. Some people just refer to me by the name Morgan- you can do so if you wish. I thought it wouldn't be, erm-" don't say awkward don't say awkward "-boring if I spoke to you." He realized this wasn't much better. "I mean... you look interesting to speak to... I mean..." He sighed. "I think I just ran into a wall with my words, didn't I?"

"Not really." Shima assured with a giggle. He's making a fool if himself She thought. "Your.. Pretty fun to talk to." Shima remarked with a smirk. She looked at the room around her, and then back to Sytano.

"Oh, alright." His tone was lighter and he grinned. Well, it could definitely be worse. "Am I, really?" That's new... never heard that one before. He leaned on the wall next to him, cheerfully. "Well, so... how has your stay been? Have you found it entertaining? ...I mean, I've found it interesting, more or less." He felt a bit more comfortable speaking to Shima now.

"Yeah." Shima responded casually. Sytano seems more comfortable talking to me now. She gave him a smile, and noticed he'd leaned on the wall. She still wondered why he'd bothered talking to her in the first place, but he wasn't a nuisance so she guessed it was fine. "My stay? We just got here." She said with a giggle. "So far it's been fine. I've made at least two friends I think. Maybe you could be the third."[/] She said. It was nice talking to people, but Shima preferred to train. "Hey," she began. "Maybe we could spar sometime? Also, I'm a Ferromancer, what about you?" She asked.

"I wouldn't mind that- I've only made one friend after all, two if you count my opponent." He said happily. "Anyways, I'm a Pyromancer, so I'm definitely interested in what your technique, being a Ferromancer and all- sparring would be great." His response was blunt but quick. A Ferromancer, though... it sounds kind of hard to have a wide variety of spells, so they'd have to be creative... Sytano smirked at the many possible techniques she could use, before returning to a more innocent smile. Trying to keep the conversation going, he continued. "Seeing by the chatter outside, students should be coming in around now. What do you think the teachers are going to... well, teach, anyways?"

"A Pyro, huh? Imagine the credit I'd get if I could whoop a a Pyro..." Shima thought aloud. Her face went rosey, and she quickly apologized for her slip up. "Sorry, I'm just a little concerned about something that happened earlier. I-I mean't no disrespect." She stuttered.

Sytano almost looked at her in fear. I guess I can't get too friendly in a place like this... nevertheless, I don't really mind. He then smirked and looked straight at her. "Good luck with that, heh." He then returned to his normal tone. "But nevertheless, I can understand why you would say that if you're stressed, no big deal anyways. If we do happen to fight, we will see who wins then."

Shima smiled shyly, and nodded. "By the way, why did you decide to come to the institute?" She asked curiously. That's it, change the subject. She turned briefly away before turning back to explain. "I mean, if you want to tell me. I came here because my family left me when they found out I could use magic. I'm hoping I'll make friends here like I've been doing." She said simply.

His eyes widened and he showed remorse. Certainly the antagonists, maybe... His thoughts wandered off. Still, for someone to do that to their own child, it's sickening. Maybe she was better off without them... "I was a third generation, I believe, and I was taught by my grandfather. I happened to get a letter after an, um, accident that may or may not have been shown on the local news." Change of subject, but I don't mind. He gulped as he realized what the could mean. "It wasn't that big, I swear! I mean, at least it wasn't genocide or anything. I just came here to learn how to be able to control as well as use my powers. I guess." Probably not a good idea to leave it like that. "But if I meet new people, that's fine as well."

Shima giggled and gave him a happy smile. "Heh, well I think you'd make a great friend. So.. I have nothing else to talk about, so I'm going to go find a seat. Since we're in the same class, would you like to sit together? I mean, you don't have to but it's just a suggestion." She said, walking to the corner of the room.

Sytano shrugged. "For now, I suppose it wouldn't hurt to do so..." He followed her and took the seat next to her, smiling slightly. That's an alright start, I suppose... He turned to see Lia yelling out something about it being overly quiet... and empty. Might be a good idea to pretend it actually is empty... He gulped and laid his head on his desk, as if to take a nap right on it.

Zane Reav
For the most part, since entering the class, Zane gazed out the window he had decided to sit by. The view was gorgeous, with a vista so iconic it looked like a postcard. The mountains lined the horizon, gently contrasted by a meandering river. Trees seemed to frame the scene, improving the already picture-like quality of the view. Zane pondered why a school would have such a view, but he was quickly losing interest. His thoughts were in other places, none of which the teacher were involved in. He didn't even catch his full name. The only thing he really heard was "Doctor Osc-", though that didn't even fully register. No, his attention was now focused on developing his spells, even if he hadn't mastered the ones he knew. Vector Shift, which is what he called his movement magic, was the riskiest spell in his repertoire, even if it was one of his strongest spells. The idea of turning his body into light gave him several ideas that he wanted to explore, but the idea that's caught his idea is reversing the process. More specifically, he has become interested in the idea of turning light into a solid. He'd need to test it out in a non-classroom setting, though.

By now he was growing tired of the briefing by Doc Osc. It had dragged on for too long, and in his mind it needed to be over. Without making any effort to raise his hand or show any sign that he was about to speak, other than turning to face the teacher, he began to speak in a rather upbeat tone. It was without a doubt one of his façades to maintain his image.

"Hey, Doc Osc, can we go now? It's been what seems to be ages, and I seriously don't think anyone else is coming."

Zane shuffled in his seat for a few moments after his little statement. Now that his intentions to leave were known, he couldn't keep himself from moving around. His craving to leave kept increasing, all because he wanted to start testing his new hypothesis. Even though only a few moments had passed, he couldn't help but make another statement to the teacher.

"I really don't want this to come out wrong, but there's a few things I need to attend to. If the class isn't let out soon, then I think I'm gonna have to leave with or without permission. Sorry if that sounds a bit pretentious."

Oscar DeMuere

With a final, awkward crunch, DeMuere turned to the Blondie who had spoken. "Sure, why not? This was getting awkward anyways. Class is dismissed, guys. Go eat, or check out your dorms! The computers are certainly a plus." It was a simple command, and with a wave of his hand towards the doors he grinned and pushed up his thin glasses. "If you want to talk, I'll be here ten more minutes unless held back, and then I'll be downstairs. Good? Good. Ciao. Also, I suggest you speak with the locals. The older guys here can help you with what you need to know. I can help too, so don't worry about anything... yet."

He watched them. "Well, what're you waiting for? Go." He waved as they left before sitting behind the desk, spinning in the swivel chair once, and munching on more chips.

Jason Barrett

Jason kept his head down slightly since the teacher used him as an example of tardiness. He realized that it had to be done (and he accepted that) but he felt very uncomfortable being in the spotlight at this point. It was then that a blonde guy basically asked when the teacher would let them go, saying that he had something more important to take care of. "What would be more important than learning how to further control your powers?" he thought. To his surprise, however, the teacher agreed and let them out to do whatever. Jason took the cue and grabbed a handout that was on the teacher's desk before walking out, heading back outside the building.

As he walked, he took mental notes about where some of the rooms and more important features of the school were. "No sense in getting lost and showing up late again," he said to himself as he opened the door and a slight breeze embraced him. He walked past the dorms and gym, heading for the edge of a nearby forest. Though it may be unnatural, he felt a lot more comfortable outside among nature than in a stuffy building in an uncomfortable desk. He decided to sit under the shade of a large tree close to the rec center and pulled out the handout he took and began to read it.

"Five natural elements...two rare elemental magics...making seven in all," he thought aloud as he read. As his eyes got to the part where it talked about battling, Jason's eyes widened. Why was there so much emphasis on fighting? He knew that this school would help with controlling his own spells and, possibly, learning some new spells and techniques. So why so much time fighting with each other? This started to make him feel more like being in the military than an actual school. He slowly put the paper down and closed his eyes, leaning his head back as he tried to put all of these revelations into perspective.

A.J.

"Hey, Doc Osc, can we go now? It's been what seems to be ages, and I seriously don't think anyone else is coming."

Alma glanced up at the boy that had spoken, raising an eyebrow. This was a class, correct? Since when did students ever have input on when class should be dismissed? Who was this kid, anyways? He seemed like a moron.

"I really don't want this to come out wrong, but there's a few things I need to attend to. If the class isn't let out soon, then I think I'm gonna have to leave with or without permission. Sorry if that sounds a bit pretentious."

Yes, because it's totally fine to have plans that are more important than class during class. This kid seemed to have his priorities screwed up, and perhaps a few screws loose himself. The only reason A.J. didn't chime in right there to tell him as much was because she too was bored to tears.

"Sure, why not? This was getting awkward anyways. Class is dismissed, guys. Go eat, or check out your dorms! The computers are certainly a plus." DeMuere waved his hand towards the door nonchalantly, taking the boy's advice—or rudeness, more accurately. "If you want to talk, I'll be here ten more minutes unless held back, and then I'll be downstairs. Good? Good. Ciao. Also, I suggest you speak with the locals. The older guys here can help you with what you need to know. I can help too, so don't worry about anything . . . yet." There was a brief pause as DeMuere waited for his students to stand and leave. "Well, what're you waiting for? Go."

Did this teacher seriously just dismiss class at the request of one of the students?

. . .

Sweet. A.J. liked this teacher already.

She stood up, grabbed her bag and walked out of the room, giving a polite wave to DeMuere as she did so. Once she had exited the room, she began exploring the hallways. She figured she may as well learn some of the school right now, and eventually she might run into Vance. He was probably still in class, though, so she had some time.

She walked around for a quarter of an hour, making a map of the school in her head. She wasn't sure which classrooms and areas she'd have to visit later, so she just tried to remember them all. Or at least the important-looking ones. As she passed students and teachers, she also made mental notes of most of their faces. When she saw someone, she would typically try and gauge their magical and physical combat capabilities, their primary skills, and their personalities. With the exception of the latter, it was mostly all guessing.

Once she'd gotten bored of the school interior, she exited the building and began to explore outside. She paused for a moment once she got outside, took a deep breath and just let the wind wash over her. It was amazing. She then walked over to what seemed to be one of the main gathering places for students outside. She stayed a little off to the side and took a seat. She figured Vance would come and find her eventually.

Or perhaps a new face would appear first.

Clayton Fields

It had been a long day for Clayton. Headmistress Vale had sent him on several errands and on top of that he had to deal with student initiations. The whole concept made him chew on his trademark piece of wheat vehemently. Unfortunately, that was how it worked out sometimes. That's why they call it work and not play, after all. It was something you didn't always enjoy, but still needed to do. He'd have all the time in the world to complain about it later, though. Without a doubt he would complain, too.

He went to meet Mr. Sandford to see which class he was supposed to see and to compare the list of students in the classes. Apparently, there was a last minute change in which class some of the students were supposed to be in. Just another piece of unusual business orchestrated by none other than Kristen Vale, the single most eclectic person this cowboy had ever seen. Once there, he immediately noticed a problem with the classes.

"Hey, Paul, did you know you have an outdated class sheet?" he sighed.

Naturally, Paul looked at him in disbelief. After all, why would Clayton have something in regards to the classes that he wouldn't. It didn't really add up for him. Paul checked through the document Clayton placed on his hall desk just to make sure. To his surprise he was right. All of the students in class 102 were supposed to be integrated into class 101. It must have been a last second decision after the original announcement, which would've explained why Paul didn't have the file in the first place. He rummaged through his papers, changing logs to remember for later on. Clayton nodded to Paul, proceeding to head towards class 102.

After reaching the class he opened the door and proceeded to enter with authority. He stood tall and unashamed. Only a few students had taken the time to show up, which made this whole mess less terrible at least. While relaxing his stance ever so slightly he made his own announcement/apology.

"Hello, my name is Clayton Fields. I'm one of the earth magic instructors here at Vale, but the main reason I'm here is to inform you on a slight mix up. There were some problems on our end regarding class placement, and every student in this class was actually supposed to be mixed in with the class 101. I'm very sorry that it took this long for me to deliver this information to you, so please understand. Thank you and enjoy your stay here at Vale."

With that he made his point, and as quickly as he entered he left. With that over with, he planned on relaxing in his private room and complaining about all the nonsense that had been going on.

Yukio "Yuki" Higashi, 15

First Day Anxiety
----------------------------------------------

Yukio rubbed the sleep from her eyes and covered a yawn with the back of her hand. The girl had slipped away from the gymnasium where the initiation fights were held and retreated to her room in the dorms. No one else was there and she was fairly certain she heard that classes were being introduced on the announcements overhead. However, Yukio had had enough of being around people so loud that they drowned out the loudest note she could play on her violin.

They were all so unique -- the people -- yet all so foreign to her. Not only were their looks unique but their mannerisms. Most of those kids had been a part of a public school system and the way they easily melded into socialization both made Yukio envious and nervous. No one had tried to talk to her but that might've been due to the way she isolated herself from the bulk of the students in that gymnasium and how she quickly fled after Soren-senpai dueled her.

That duel had been Yukio's first ever and it was with an aero and pyromancer. She had barely held her own and Bariolage almost wasn't enough to defend herself from Soren's fire-based abilities.

She sighed as she rolled from bed, slipped on her shoes and stood. She looked at herself in the mirror and smoothed out her skirt and top. The fabric had crimped while she slept. Yukio emerged from her room into the hall of the dorm, walked the hall and down the stairs until she came outside to the school's campus. It was so spacious and the openness made her feel isolated but not alone. She walked the pavement path feeling much less stressed and much more welcoming to company.

Class 101 Dissmissed -> Neutral battlefield
________________________________

As the explanation of the teacher dragged on, Crystal just started to doze off bored with all the talk. She didn't even lifted her head when her previous opponent got late and was used as a example for tardines.

When another student made a remark about needing to be somewhere else and leaving, she half expected the teacher to trow him out and continue with the boring lecture. But to her surprise, the teacher agreed and dissmissed the class with out a second tought. -So for this i got draged out of my room- Crystal said to herself annoyed, before standign up and heading to the door.

As Crystal wandered the halls of the school, she decided against goign back to the dorms, instead she decided to look for this neutral field and hopefully watch some matches between other students, preferably some with more knowledge and experience than the new students that were her classmates or her.

After wandering around for a while and asking about 4 different students for direction she finaly arrived to the field to see noone battling at the moment, but a few students loitering around talking and minding their own business. -Well this sure beats doign nothing in my room alone, so i guess i'll stay a while.- So she decided to do the same and by creating a pillar of sand under her feet she got up to a thick three branch and sat there looking at the field waiting for somethign interesting to happen, or a battle to start.

Soren, Shion, Imari, and a poor sap about to get his ass kicked.

"Mari!"

"Soren, you're late." It was just two minutes, but Imari always kept track.

"Sorry, sorry," Soren cheerfully answered. "I just had to grab someone I wanted you to meet." She stepped aside and let a girl with long, messy red hair and wide blue eyes come into the picture. "This is Shion; she's new. I thought it would be a good idea for her to watch our fight. Shion, this is one of my best friends here, Imari."

"It's nice to meet you," Imari responded, holding out her arm.

"Likewise." Shion shook Imari's hand and inquired about the fight.

"Oh, I'm not fighting Soren," Imari noted, jotting down miscellaneous details on a clipboard. "I'm not an idiot. However, there are more than enough idiots here to keep cuties like you and Soren on your toes." Indigo crossed Shion's mind, but it passed. The satisfaction of incapacitating him remained, though. Imari stepped aside as well, revealing a well-built boy sitting in a chair he made for himself out of granite, small rocks hovering above an open hand. "Anyway, this guy from Soren's homeroom thought it was a good idea to confess—"

"I wanna tell it!" the jovial third-year interrupted, then turning to Shion, who was listening intently to the story. "I told Caleb if he wanted to go out with me that he'd have to beat me first." In the past couple years, some female students had explicitly refused to date a mage who was weaker than them, and it—being an almost foreign concept to many of the students at its introduction—quickly became a common practice with students to test each other's capability before accepting a confession, but boys and girls alike didn't seem to waver when it came to fighting for love. Actually, that sounds awesome. It probably just made them stronger.

"Mari," Soren continued, "can you give us a gravity field?" Imari paused the rapid pen-tapping against her clipboard for a moment, resuming in no time.

"That's kind of a tall order, Soren."

"You can do it, Mari!" Soren cheered, grabbing Imari's shoulders and forcing her into eye contact. "Your magic is strong enough! I'm wearing pants today, so it's fine! Think of the profits!" That was true: a fight in zero gravity would be an unexpected turn of events, and Imari had no doubt that it would drive the betting up. Electromagnetism was a much stronger force than gravity, too. On top of it all, the bookie was probably collecting as they spoke, and dammit, Imari wouldn't let anything stand in the way of herself and her one true love! It didn't help that Soren had a pout equipped that a puppy would succumb to, but the increased revenue was still Numero Uno.

"Hold this, please." Imari left her clipboard with Soren and walked over to their arena. It was a large, almost sterile-looking white floor made up of an unknown material lying in an open plain that gave virtually everyone access to their magical ability; specifically, there were various small ponds, the ground around the field was... well, a lot of dirt and strewn with rocks of various size, and for the ferromancers there were metal columns strewn about the plain. The battlefield itself was nothing more than this large, flat ground, like a basketball court (but, like, five or six times bigger; this giant slab of unidentified material was utterly massive in span), accessible just outside Vale's building.

Imari took a deep breath and rubbed her hands together. She opened them as pieces of the large metal columns broke off and stood at each corner of the white court; they immediately planted themselves in the dirt and grew upward to create a four-pronged boundary, connecting at a rather decent height above the center of the field. It looked like you could lay a tarp over it and have a party below. She stepped away and looked to her accomplishment, and she briefly heard a humming noise coming from each of the pillars as her magic did its work.

Walking back to her companions, Imari explained, "I magnetised the field, so gravity should feel a lot weaker now. You might want to make it quick, though, okay?"

"Aw, sweet." Caleb finally spoke in a low voice, though his tone made him sound like a little kid who could finally go on the big boy rides at Disneyland. He broke off large chunks of the earth around him with his magic, taking it with him as he leapt through the invisible gates the metal pillars had created. Instantly, he noticed the effects. As soon as he tapped the white field with his feet he was pushed off the ground and started floating about, using the invisible walls of Imari's boundary and the platforms he could create with the dirt and stone he dragged with him to stabilise himself. The dirt hardened and wrapped around his upper body, turning into an armor.

Soren quickly joined him, trails of fire wrapping around her arms and legs and giving off sparks. Caleb grounded himself at one end of the field as students of each year gathered around, Soren hovering inches off the court with a small balls of fire beneath her feet.

The bulky geomancer didn't give Soren the first attack once a bell rang, Imari holding a massive gong she'd acquired. Chunks of earth piled up in front of Caleb and he started laying into them with his fists while gradually stepping forward, pieces breaking out and firing off at Soren in the shape of... his fists. Soren slipped by the first one, following it and propping herself on the gravity wall before kicking herself over the others. Caleb's aim followed along, but didn't keep up with the series of small explosions coming from the soles of his opponent's feet, propelling her at increasing speeds.

Once she was sufficiently above him, close to the center of the court, Soren began somersaulting, one leg outstretched, and she spun. Sonic would've been proud, as the miniature fireballs continued to detonate just behind her and pushed her to spin faster after each bang. With every spin a much larger fireball fell from her body, battering this poor potential suitor with an onslaught of force and heat.

It only lasted for about ten seconds, though; Soren started to get dizzy, and Caleb was a serious tank when he had his armor on. Dirt had spread across much of the battlefield from the assault, and as Soren managed to land herself on another wall Caleb had coalesced it into a giant hand—easily thrice Soren's width and much taller than her—chasing her down as if it were about to crush her with its palm. The hand nearly did its job, breaking down into a cloud of dust and soil and obscuring Soren's end of the field.

Enter: the Jack of Spades! Late on the first day, smooth...

So, this is the place huh? Very nice, can't wait to start learning!...never thought I'd think that with so much enthusiasm. Jack Marrick was walking the campus of the Vale Institute of Magic, he was by himself since he was almost an adult and his parents had already said their goodbyes. With a single glance at his watch, however, he realized it was practically the middle of the day. That's probably late isn't it?? Oh well, hopefully they'll be a bit lenient considering how last-minute the invite was, I hope someone will describe the orientation for me or whatever. He walked on but any responsible thoughts of quickly finding a teacher and getting acclimated to the school were shoved out by the sounds of sweet violence.

Following the chorus of crashes and swooshes wasn't too hard, and in no time Jack was greeted with the sight of a bunch of floating debris. It was clear something was going on, Jack stepped closer to get a better look without noticing he was near two girls that also seemed to be watching the affair. "Wow, I can't say I expected some sort of magic fight to be the first thing I saw when I got here," he muttered to himself while he watched. It seemed like the girl in the fight was on the ropes and he was looking forward to seeing how they actually fought since he'd shown up during a lull in the fighting.

Dust had surrounded the girl in a fine powder, the gasps of the viewing students abound. Some teachers had actually already considered jumping in to get the girl somewhere to recover, but they held themselves back.

The debris from the boy's now-destroyed giant hand was being forced about into a cyclone, completely obscuring the sight of her. Jack asked another student about who was fighting, and quickly learned a bit about them. From what he'd seen, Soren was a pyromancer, and Caleb a geomancer. That cyclone, though; did Soren have earth magic at her disposal?

All of the powder had gathered into a single area, completely covering the girl in a dense sphere, and Caleb couldn't seem to pull his opponent away from the debris. Even bits of his stony armor were breaking off as he ran in and started pounding away at the wall Soren created.

Then he was blown back, grinding his feet along the floor to keep himself stable as the debris clung to him, the ground and Imari's gravitational walls. Soren flipped the tables on Caleb again with the roaring cheers of excited classmates, going straight on the offensive with a flaming rocket from the soles of her shoes, the trails of fire Jack had originally missed before increasing in size on her arms and legs.

"Whoa!" He couldn't keep himself quiet for a moment but he stifled himself before anyone would stare at him. Wow, she's a regular swiss army...mancer? Whatever, she's awesome! Wonder what else she has up her sleeve. Go, Soren, go! He leaned in a bit more so he wouldn't miss a thing.

Soren got within inches of her target in a matter of moments, and Caleb was pushed into defense, using the stone covering his body to block the dancing flurry of blazing punches and kicks that Soren threw; it almost looked like she was leading him upward. He tried standing strong, but the lack of gravity was getting to him, and he was giving—lifting off the floor, inch by inch. When he finally lost the feeling of the ground beneath his feet, Soren used her momentum to kick Caleb straight upward, stone snapping off his torso.

He tried using the broken rocks and remaining debris to right himself and stand up, but he was too late once he heard the faint sound of explosions again. Soren had followed him up with her propulsion magic, and the fire on her limbs had all gathered into a single flame around her right fist. Twisting over herself as she reached him, Caleb held his arms in front of him like a shield, an impressively-sized fire was quite literally punched into him.

Caleb fell like a bomb, embers lagging behind him. He crashed into the ground, the rock that remained on his back hitting first and softening his impact with a little magic. It wasn't enough, though, as Caleb was left unconscious on the ground, Soren still in the air.

Imari disabled her magic and Soren fell to the court with an unsightly amount of dirt around her, a pair of teachers immediately running in with healing magic at the ready for Caleb.

"Are you alright?" one of the teachers asked the victor. She gave an affirmatory "mhm" and a nod, stretching her fingers and telling them that she'd just need to refrain from punching anything for a while. Her body betrayed her, however, as she quickly collapsed in the teacher's arms.

One boy out of the people who'd been watching the fight seemed a bit more astonished than all the others, he had to stop himself from running up to congratulate Soren on the fight. "Wow, just... wow. That was amazing! I can already tell this place is going to be better than any regular school." As long as nobody kicks MY ass too hard... He tapped the nearest student to him on the shoulder and queried, "Are fights like that regular occurences around here?"

The student, holding a clipboard with a pen behind her ear, turned from the results of the fight to look at Jack. She answered, "Usually they're not this organized, and different students have different reasons, but fights happen all the time. The only time they don't take place is when it's a holiday."

"And the teachers?"

"Most of the staff can use healing magic or can administer first aid, so injuries aren't a problem. The students don't hold back, either—we're not supposed to, or we'd never get past our limits."

"Has anyone—"

"Died? A few times, but the Institute has taken on more staff the past couple years, so it's relatively safe to go all-out whenever we want."

"I see; this place really sounds great. Thanks for answering my questions I'm... well, a little late."

"I can tell."

"Imari," another girl called.

"What is it? You worried?" Shion turned her eyes away for a moment before looking at Imari and nodding slightly.

"Less about injuries; more about how Soren takes care of herself when she passes out after every fight."

"A teacher or one of her friends just takes her to the infirmary or her bedroom to rest."

When Jack looked at the other girl who'd shown up he lost his breath for a moment. She was downright beautiful especially with that red hair, even though there were many beauties he'd passed by—especially a curvy blonde hydromancer—and her presence alone intimidated him a bit. And Jack wasn't intimidated by beauty. Jack hoped he wasn't to be pitted against her at some point. He'd probably have some stupid moment of not wanting to hit such a cute girl, and get annihilated for hesitating. That pretty face could probably kill me.

He recovered and couldn't help speaking up even though he didn't really seem a part of the conversation. "I can tell she's fine just from watching all that; She can't be a first year student, can she? I bet she'll—" Jack silenced himself once he realized he was thinking out loud. Again. And all excited and stuff in front of two beautiful young ladies; he was practically flailing! He must have looked rather silly

He cleared his throat. "Sorry if I'm being a bit immature about this whole thing. Honestly, magic hasn't been that big a part of my life until recently. Especially not other Mancers. I've never met any besides my Dad before."

He squared his shoulders and stepped towards the main building, intending to go get set up before he could make a real fool of himself, but not before he got an introduction out of the way, and Imari assured to him that he'd probably enjoy his time at Vale if that fight alone excited him so much.

Zane Reav

The class was concluded only moments after Zane's little outburst, if you could call it that. In all reality it was more of an interruption, but that's not important. His motive behind his statement, however, was important: to further his abilities in a school unparalleled in teaching young Mancers how to control magic. Unfortunately, he felt that it would be pointless to spend an excessive amount of time in orientation when he could be focusing on something more productive, which is why he did what he did. In retrospect, he realized how rude it was, but regardless he had gotten the wanted outcome. Seeing that the teacher, Doc Osc, was motioning the class out the door Zane was happy to oblige.

As Zane walked out of the class, he began planning his next step in his research. The first step beginning was to simply find a spot to experiment. Wherever he planned to work he knew it needed to be somewhat spacious, or at least something of a similar nature. Being new in the school didn't help in his goal, though. So far, the only place he'd seen that would possibly qualify was the gym, but considering that it was being used for evaluations it probably wouldn't be a viable option. This left him with a bit of a problem; one that if not handled could be problematic. If he didn't know where to go, then he'd have to find a place the ole' fashioned way by looking for it. Of course, that still left him with a simple question: where to start looking? He remembered a rather large building outside the school that seemed like it may be a prime place to start.

The walk to the building in question was rather uneventful. Upon reaching the building he learned that it was the school's recreation center, and it just so happened that a fight was going on. He watched intently, as a girl and boy battled in midair. The girl appeared to be a pyromancer while the boy a geomancer, though he was rather shocked when the girl used something like aeromancy to launch the boy's own earthen shell back at him. The battle was completely unlike the ones he had seen and been a part of, a testament to the ability and skill of longtime students here at Vale. While watching the battle his attention drifted to some of the bystanders. One person in particular had caught his eye. It was the girl he promised to steal, one Shion Igna. She was standing close to the fight, while two other people, a boy and a girl, were on either side of her talking all friendly like. After the fight had ended, the boy had left towards the main school building. As Zane stood there a brilliant idea struck him. He could use the boy, who appeared to be her friend, as a conduit to get closer to Shion, thus furthering his goal. Zane chased the boy down as fast as he could until he was within earshot of the boy.

"Hey, could you help me with something?!" Zane called out, hoping the boy would react.
