Aberdeen Montany
post 3 chapter 3 : Violet City

"Rattata, use Tackle!" the youngster shouted. His purple rat companion quickly obeyed.

"Tackle!" Aberdeen called out as well, and Chespin did as he was told, an eager grin across his face.

The two pokémon met in a forceful Tackle in the middle of the street and both fell back with a groan onto the paving bricks. People who were walking nearby reacted and someone shouted that they should keep off the populated streets if they were going to battle. Both boys were too deep into the battle to take heed, though.

"Vine Whip?" Aberdeen suggested. Chespin didn't even get up from the ground before he lashed out with sudden vines at the rat. The youngster was quick though.

"Dodge!" he shouted, and the rat managed to jump aside in the nick of time.

"Cool," Aberdeen admitted, nodding. "Another Vine Whip!"

Chespin, now back on his feet, lashed out once more.

"Dodge!"

Rattata jumped aside once again, now also with a grin underneath its big front teeth.

"Why do you keep doing that?" Ab asked, slightly annoyed.

"Strategy!" the youngster standing opposite him proclaimed proudly. He put his hands on his hips. "Learned that from the Pokémon Academy. Use Tackle!"

"Academy? What's that? Dodge!" Ab asked, chatting and battling simultaneously.

"A school for trainers. It's right here in Violet, it's really cool! Quick Attack!"

Rattata came in faster now, and tackled Chespin off his feet before the grass pokémon had time to even listen to a command from his trainer.

"School is boring," Aberdeen grunted and stepped sideways to follow where their pokémon were rolling about. "Rollout!"

"Not this school," the youngster assured him, as Chespin curled up into a ball and started rolling straight at the other rodent. "Dodge with Quick Attack!"

Rattata once again dodged the oncoming assault, but this time turned quickly afterwards and tackled Chespin from behind, running faster than the grass pokémon was rolling. Chespin broke out of its ball shape and fell flat on the ground with a groan.

"Bite!"

"Hang on, wasn't it my turn now?" Ab said, running up to sit by Chespin's side as if to protect him.

"Turns aren't really strict, it's more of a... um... concept."

"Concept?"

"Well, you'd know more if you had gone to the Academy," the youngster said, again with his hands on his hips. "You might need it, actually. If you don't let Rattata attack now, you're pretty much forfeiting the game. You'll lose."

"Okay then, I lost," Ab said with a shrug and picked a thankful Chespin up in his arms.

"What, just like that?"

"Yeah, why not?"

"You'll have to pay me."

"Oh. That's a downside with losing, I suppose."

"Don't you know anything? You said you were a trainer," the youngster said as he approached Aberdeen, who handed him a small sum of money for the victory.

"Only for a few days. Won one battle, was a draw in another one. And now I've lost one too, I suppose. One of each!"

The other boy scratched his head. "How can you be so calm about losing and coming out in a draw? That's not what a trainer wants. You really should visit the Pokémon Academy and learn what a trainer should be like."

Aberdeen and Chespin shared a look, as if to decide if they would do it or not. "Okay," Ab then said. "Where's this Academy then?"

Blaine - Time for a ruin excavation-or not

After his last meeting with Melody Blaine thought it might be good enough to get some shut eye at the center. He knew there were maps in the center itself and after looking through the available he was relieved to see just how close it was to the city. At least it wasn't on the other side of the route or such. Judging the distance, he could safely assume if he took the night to sleep then he could arrive at the ruins sometime before noon the next day, assuming he had no delays on his part. When he awoke the next morning he was glad that Derpy wasn't slobbering on some part of his body this time, the little Totodile was just sitting in a chair with his large eyes staring at Blaine. Truth be told, the trainer felt more than a little creeped out by such behavior, but could he really expect anything different from the water mon who had almost bitten his hand off back in the forest?

Of course Derpy was jumping all over the place, gurgling loudly as they left the center and this time they left no mess behind in the room. Blaine had to wonder if one day that mess would come back to haunt him. As they got up Blaine could see the gym off in the distance and he knew if he started making his way to the ruins now, he probably wouldn't come back to try out the gym. He thought on that trade off and shrugged. This was far more important and more intriguing than some gym challenge. Here was a bonified mystery that he could find no explanation for. Hell, at least one conspiracy theory would have been nice, yet nothing about stones breaking off from the statues had appeared online. That meant this had to be a rare occurrence. He just had to pick up some potions and a few pokeballs and then he could get going.

He made his way along the road after his errands and he was soon traveling on a dirt path. He had to make a turn up ahead to head down to where the ruins were and deep down he wondered what would happen when he got there. Would he start glowing or would the shard start glowing? Maybe he would end up being given a wish of some kind or would the legendary itself appear before him? He found that he was now moving faster with Derpy running along side him. Blaine smirked and also broke into a run with his mon. He was more than eager to get there now!

~~~
"So it's closed till then?" He asked with a deadpan tone.
The guard nodded, "The ruins are quite dangerous, we've had too many incidents of tourists getting lost so we ask that you remain outside of the ruins until the tour starts. Until then you can take pictures outside and visit the stores set up."
Blaine shrugged and moved away. Well that sucked, though Derpy was still jumping about happily. Eventually the little gator just ran to where some trees were near the ruins as he gurgled.
"Found something huh?" He asked the gator, "Alright, let's see then. Do a Water Gun!"
The Totodile took in a deep breath and spat out some water at the tree roots. There was a cry and out from the soil slipped a small being. It was a gray and green color and seemed to be some sort of insect. Blaine whipped out his dex and frowned, "Nincada. It lives underground and absorbs moistures and nutrients. It can't stand bright sunlight."
He looked back as the Nincada as Derpy hopped about happily. The Nincada didn't look that happy to have been rooted from the soil and jumped at Derpy. It landed on his chest and bit into his shoulder as a green glow covered Derpy. The Totodile cried out as his energy was leeched from his form and he groaned. He in turn opened his jaws and bit down on the Nincada as he ripped it from his body and shook his jaws a bit before throwing the Nincada away.
The bug wasn't ready to give up as its body shined with a white light. Blaine wasn't sure what it had done, but that wouldn't be enough to stop Derpy. "Derpy, another bite!" He cried out.
The Totodile gurgled out and rushed forth, once more snapping the bug up in his jaws and waving it around wildly before throwing the bug back a bit. The Nincada wobbled a bit, yet it ran forth again, this time biting into Derpy's leg as it once more sought to drain the Totodile's energy. Derpy grunted in pain as the pincers dug into his flesh and just as quickly the bug jumped back, a bit more energized this time.
Derpy still wasn't down as he gurgled angrily at the bug. "Aqua Jet!" Blaine commanded and Derpy's body was coated in a sheet of water as he flew on to his target, slamming into the bug quite easily. The Nincada groaned as it wavered a bit on the spot and Blaine took out a pokeball, "Hold it down Derpy!" The Totodile eagerly rushed over to hold down the insect as Blaine chucked out a pokeball.
It nailed the Nincada right on the forehead and sucked it in. Blaine watched as the ball wiggled a bit and Derpy placed his hands right on it, doing his best to prevent it from opening should the Nincada try and escape. It wiggled a bit more and then settled down. Blaine walked on over and picked up the ball from his helper, "Well, that's fine and good." He said with a chuckle. "Now… what else to do while we wait for this tour to start?"
Aberdeen Montany
post 4 chapter 3 : Violet City
The lecture was boring. Aberdeen had never been the most persistent and interested kid in school; that was Anabel's and Rachel's area. At least it used to be... While the teacher went on about pokémon physiology and healthcare, the class Ab had chosen on a whim, the boy zoned off. The sky outside the classroom's window was speckled with clouds that passed over the town quickly. Trees were swaying in the garden. It was windy. Aberdeen liked when the weather was like this, it made him feel free somehow when the air rushed through his hair.
"Mr Montany?"
Somebody poked him in the side and he looked around, startled. The teacher had been asking him a question.
"Sorry?" he said sheepishly. Some girls in a row behind him giggled. He didn't necessarily take that as a bad thing.
"I was asking if you could name two berries that are considered beneficial for pokémon to consume, but don't necessarily have any direct medicinal effects. We just went over the berries a quarter of an hour ago?"
The teacher narrowed her eyes at him through her thick glasses and the young trainers sitting near Ab turned to stare shamelessly at the boy who was about to get ridiculed.
"Oh. Like Jaboda and Rowap berries?" Aberdeen said without hesitation. "They are really cool."
The girls in the back row dropped their jaws and the teacher's eyebrows raised and made several neatly folded wrinkles emerge on her forehead. Ab produced a smile.
"Very good," the teacher said and went on to remind everyone about the special features of said berries. Aberdeen winked to his benchmate, who had poked him in the side earlier, before leaning his head against his elbow and continue to stare out the window again. Sometimes having a pokénurse and a florist as parents could apparently prove useful.
After the lecture, all singleday students were encouraged to enter the Academy garden and engage in some battling, either against their classmates or with the enlisted students that went to the Academy on a regular basis. Ab was actually itching for more battle. The one earlier this day had been a very sudden thing and since his class had been about pokémon care and not really any battling aspects, he knew this garden was his best opportunity to get some practicing in before he went to challenge Falkner. IF he would challenge Falkner. He hadn't completely made up his mind yet.
The wind was still blowing. It came in gusts, sometimes just being a warm summer breeze but other times kicking up a dustcloud or whirling the hair of some girl around her head. Aberdeen walked down a stoned path with a constant smile glued to his lips, all natural. Wind didn't bother him. He suddenly wondered how well Pidgey would fare in this weather. She had seemed to struggle when faced with wind-based attacks earlier.
For the heck of it, he let all three of his pokémon out of their pokéballs. It seemed to be common practice in this garden anyways, he deducted after a quick glance around. Chespin, Whismur and Pidgey all materialized in front of him.
"Hi guys," he said and petted each one of them playfully. It had only been a few days, but he was already starting to realize why trainers seemed to have such strong bonds with their pokémon. They trusted you really easily, and Ab didn't feel like he had any qualms about putting his trust in them in return. At least not these small, friendly ones. There were probably other kinds of pokémon out there. He would encounter them eventually. Evolved monsters...
"What is THAT?" someone shouted behind him and ran to pick up Chespin before Aberdeen could intervene. "That is AMAZING!"
"Hello?" Ab said awkwardly.
The boy turned around and revealed a face littered with freckles and brown curly hair above eager, blue eyes. Apart from the freckles and the curls, he looked pretty similar to Ab, actually. The same hair color and height. And the smile the boy shot him now was at least as wide as Ab's usually was.
"You have a SHINY Chespin!" he exclaimed, a little too loud for standing so close.
"Really?" Ab said, taking a stealthy step back.
"Really! What, you didn't know that?"
"I guess. Cute, isn't he?"
"CUTE? He is MARVELOUS!" the boy said and hugged Chespin with a giggle. Chespin looked more confused than bothered but seemed to decide to get along with it, toothily grinning in the process.
"I'm Donald McCarthey by the way!" the boy then said and put Chespin down to shake Aberdeen's hand vigorously.
"Aberdeen Montany."
"You're new, aren't you? No wait. You're a daily, of course."
"I only signed up for the day, if that's what you mean, yeah."
"Most here are. Travelers, trainers. Only locals or people from fine families across the region come here to enlist properly. It's a fine academy, you know!"
"I'm sure it is!"
"And you want to battle, don't you?"
Now, Ab's eyes awakened a bit more. "Yeah! You ready?"
"Oh no. Not me. I'm not a battler," Donald waved him off quickly. "But I know just whom to set you up with."
It turned out to be a chubby girl around Aberdeen's age, named Courtney. He followed Donald out on a flat lawn with larger tufts of tall grass here and there. A group of students stood chatting in the middle, no pokémon to be seen around them for a change. Donald called out to Courtney and within seconds, she and Aberdeen had taken positions on opposite sides of the lawn. It was as if Donald had done this a thousand times before, as an established gamemaker. And apparently also referee, because he now took place in between them with an important face, while Courtney's classmates gathered behind him to watch with bored faces. Seemed like they weren't usually expecting much from the "dailies".
Then again, Aberdeen wasn't expecting much from himself either. As far as he could guess, all of these people were much more experienced with battling than he was and he would probably lose. But as battles here were free of charge, no winner's money to be handed out, he really didn't mind losing at all. So with a carefree smile, he sent out Whismur to the first battle.
Courtney had a much more serious look on her sort of flabby face, as she sent out her pokémon. Tentacool!
Aberdeen thought it was a really cool looking pokémon and thought to himself that he'd totally want one of those in the future. Tentacool didn't even want to greet him when he waved a hello. Wow, these students were really serious about their training, weren't they?
Ab lost the battle. Simple as that. It began with Whismur trying to use Pound. Instead of hitting, he was suddenly Constricted by Tentacool's vines. As he danced around trying to get lose, Tentacool proceeded to Poison Sting the bunny pokémon before finally releasing it. Visibly weaker, Whismur already started to lose confidence, something it already had little of. But Ab cheered it on with an order to use it's specialty: Uproar. Whismur's attack began, but something new happened in this battle - Tentacool countered it with another sonic attack: Supersonic. The Uproar was still very strong, so the Supersonic couldn't get through and affect Whismur, but the Uproar waves couldn't get through the Supersonic either; Tentacool's attack seemed to act as a sonic buffer or shield. Eventually, Whismur couldn't hold up the attack any longer. The poison had taken its toll. After another simple Constrict from the Tentacool, Whismur fainted, draped in the tentacles of its opponent.
"Poor thing," Aberdeen said once his pokémon was released and picked the unconscious fellow up in his arms. "I'll make you healthy as soon as I can, okay? For now, have this." He picked out a Poison Cure from his bag and treated the pokémon with it. After only moments, Whismur blinked up at him again, thankfully. Ab still sent him back inside his pokéball for the time being.
"You lost," Donald said from his referee spot.
"I guess!" Ab laughed and pulled a hand through his hair.
"That's supposed to be a bad thing!"
"Okay. I'm sorry?" Ab said, trying to sound like Donald wanted him to sound.
"You should try again. Try to win this time," Donald said with a disappointed glare and called another trainer forward from the bunch that were currently congratulating Courtney on the easy win. This one was a lean, black haired boy with big, alert eyes. Also shorts. Comfy and easy to wear.
"This is Trevor. Trevor, meet Aberdeen."
"Hello!" Ab said and waved friendly across the lawn. Trevor just snickered in response. Still no respect for the dailies, aha. Well, not that Ab had done much to convince him.
"Begin!" Donald said with his most serious voice.
For this battle, Aberdeen sent out Pidgey. Once again without checking what pokémon his opponent would be using. Interestingly enough, it was also a bird, but a very different one. Archen, Aberdeen's pokédex told him it was. Flying/Rock type. Wait, Rock, that wasn't good against his Flying type, was it? Too late now anyways. These battles, according to Donald, were strictly one on one. At least when Donald was in charge. And who was Ab to argue?
Aberdeen decided to not start first this time, at least. That might have been a mistake. Archen made a strange movement and then appeared to be glitching out. Copies of it appeared around where it had previously stood. It was very difficult to tell which one was the real bird. Ab called for a Sand Attack, however, and smartly enough, the sand blew straight through the copies while it hit the real Archen and made it flap its wings to avoid getting struck in the eyes. Interesting, Archen didn't seem to be a good flyer. Pidgey kept itself high up in the sky to take advantage of that. However, Pidgey lacked no proper wind-based or otherwise ranged moves though, so she had to come down close to make a Tackle. Archen was struck, but the moment Pidgey soared upwards again, Archen collected itself and fired off a Rock Throw. Rocky projectiles hit Pidgey hard and made her lose altitude. Trying to save the situation, she came in for another Tackle at the fossil pokémon, but Archen had already launched itself in a Quick Attack towards its opponent. The pokémon slammed into one another, both getting thrown back onto the ground... and only Archen getting up quickly afterwards. Pidgey lay chirping sadly on the ground.
"Trevor is the winner!" Donald declared, an even more disappointed look on his face now.
"There, there, girl," Ab cooed as he scooped the bird up in his arms and stroke the feathers on her forehead gently. "Pretty cool battle though? You gotta work on your loops, maybe! Strike faster, you know!" After a sarcastic chirp back from Pidgey, he sent her into her pokéball and looked up at Donald, who had put his hands on his hips by now.
"Are you even trying?"
"What?"
"Tackle, Sand attack, those are newbie moves!"
"Pidgey doesn't know any more moves."
"Oh. Oh, my head hurts," Donald said and suddenly had to sit down in the grass. Ab sat down beside him and glanced back at Trevor and Courtney and their friends, who were laughing together.
"Hey," he tried. "It doesn't matter if I win or lose. Well, it's bad to not earn money, I suppose. But that's why it really doesn't matter in here."
"Of course it matters! If you never win, how will you grow together with your pokémon?"
Aberdeen looked at Donald again. He looked like this was the most important thing in the world. Was it? Aberdeen swallowed. He took up Chespin's pokéball and looked at it in his hand. The brown chestnut pokémon was currently kept inside. Couldn't they just travel together and see things and generally have fun for a while, before Aberdeen had to grow up, before he had to get a job and face real life...
"Pokémon aren't just animals. Pokémon aren't like humans. Pokémon are the most marvelous things that ever existed. They battle even in the wild. Even the most peaceful pokémon measure their strength by battling, or battle through rituals or dance. Even singing can be part of pokémon battling! Healing, falling in love, elemental powers, flying, teleporting, staring... Literally anything you can think of can be part of a pokémon battle. That's how they live. That's how they grow."
Aberdeen didn't realize that he was staring at Donald now. The student was sitting on his knees beside Ab, waving his arms energetically as he spoke.
"And the reason pokémon training is a thing is that both pokémon and humans benefit from the arrangement. Pokémon get help and coaching to grow stronger, humans get a richer life. Pokémon training is about learning how to win battles. To fullfill your dreams."
Wind rustled the brown hair of both boys and their eyes kept contact, until Ab finally broke it.
"I didn't think of it that way," he said.
"I know," Donald said. "But you know what? I want to battle you."
Aberdeen raised an eyebrow. "You? I thought you weren't a battler."
"I'm not the best there is. Not at winning, at least. So maybe even you can win against me."
"Why?"
"I want you to know what winning feels like. Let it spur you on, let it drive you!"
"Why?" Ab almost laughed now. "Why me?"
Donald hesitated, looking confused. "I don't really know. Because you're so bad at battling that it hurts my soul, perhaps?"
"Ouch," Ab giggled.
They got up and Donald showed Aberdeen to the healing station in a little house in the middle of the Academy garden. It was like an automated Pokémon Center. After making sure that Whismur and Pidgey were both okay again, the boys took position on opposite sides of the lawn once more. Courney and Trevor looked in disbelief at whom Ab was facing this time. Still, Trevor agreed to be the temporary judge.
"Now, we use three pokémon," Donald announced.
"Suits me fine," Aberdeen agreed, feeling the wind tug his clothes and the afternoon sun peek through the clouds down at the garden, where he would hopefully soon win a battle. Maybe.
---...'''
"Go, loyal pals!" Donald said and sent three pokémon out from their balls at once. On the battlefield, three pokémon emerged that made Aberdeen drop his jaw and the students watching snicker at his surprise.
Donald had a Poliwhirl, a Weepinbel and a Ponyta.
"Evolved pokémon! You have evolved pokémon!" Ab spluttered out.
"I do," Donald said matter-of-factly.
"But you said you weren't a battler!"
"I don't battle much. But I've had these pokémon for a long time and they've... They've evolved anyways."
"But you said pokémon grew through battling."
"Not only. But mostly. Even in the wild."
"But-"
"Just battle me, Montany!" Donald cut him off, impatiently.
"Alright..." Aberdeen let all three of his, in comparison, tiny pokémon out from their pokéballs. They stood lined up in front of him and watched the enemy team defiantly. Well, Chespin did at least. Pidgey looked somewhat skeptical and Whismur couldn't help but shudder a little. "Let's start with-"
A sudden loud cry interrupted them. From the grove of trees on the other side of the lawn, a big pokémon suddenly ran out. It looked very angry.
Aberdeen pulled up his pokédex and took its reading before diving aside together with his little team to avoid a frontal tackle from the enraged bird. For it was apparently a Dodrio that had stormed towards them. It didn't let up after the miss, even though it was clearly confused. It spun around, one of its three heads spotted Chespin and it alerted the other two. The garden pokémon cried loudly again as it sprinted towards the rodent, beaks ready.
"Oh, no you don't," Ab said and ran after them. He saw Chespin's panicking glances over the shoulder as the little pokémon tried to get away. "Chespin, hop into a Rollout and turn around and tackle its legs!"
Chespin shone up at the idea and jumped ahead into a spinning ball, narrowly avoiding the first peck of the ostrich as it had caught up with him. The Rollout made him a little bit faster, and he managed to put a bit of distance between himself and the bird before he made a round turn and rolled straight into one of Dodrio's legs before it could grasp what was happening. The large bird fell over and flailed with more screeches.
Aberdeen was still running towards the scene at the far end of the lawn on his slower human legs. Students were running after them to follow the drama.
"Whismur!" Aberdeen called out, finding that his bunny pokémon was right next to him, actually flying in the air with a terrified face since Pidgey had been kind enough to pick the little creature up as gently as she could in her claws. "Use Uproar before Dodrio gets up!"
Pidgey flung the sonic pokémon forward, knowing that she wanted to be a fair distance away before Whismur started its infamous noisy attack. Whismur hit the ground close to Dodrio just as the large bird pokémon was back up on its feet again with a new screech. Whismur's Uproar quickly drowned the bird noises though, making all three heads swing from side to side in desperation. It didn't even have any hands to cover its earholes with, after all, like Aberdeen and the rest of the students could.
Ab noticed a movement in the grass on the other side of their enemy, and smiled and nodded happily. Chespin was still rolling around in the Rollout move! By now it was even stronger as he had picked up speed. Once again, Dodrio was tackled, this time getting both tall legs knocked over and all three beaks tasting dirt.
As the Uproar subsided and Whismur fell back into the grass in a mix of exhaustion and post-fright, Aberdeen turned his gaze to the sky. "Pidgey! Sand Attack!"
Pidgey, relieved that the horrible vibrating noise was gone, dove down and whipped up a dust cloud at the wild pokémon just as it got up once more.
"Now, can you tie its necks together with Vine Whip?" Ab asked Chespin, who had come to a slightly wobbly stop at his feet. The rodent nodded and fired its vines towards the blinded bird, effectively ensnaring all three necks together so that it couldn't lash out at them. "Phew," Ab let out, picking up Whismur and giving Pidgey a pat as she sat down on his shoulder.
"That's a victory," Donald said, suddenly walking up beside him.
"Is it?" Ab said, eyebrow raised. "It was pretty unfair. Three on one."
"Sometimes battles are like that. It was battling nonetheless."
"I just wanted to calm it down," Aberdeen shrugged and walked up towards the bird. Dodrio was now standing still, its three heads tied together and panting heavily with sand still in their eyes. Whismur shuddered as his trainer stepped closer to the foe, and Pidgey even took off to become airborne again.
"Hey, what's the matter?" Ab asked it. No clear reply. Of course. It couldn't exactly speak human language, could it?
"There is nothing wrong with it," a voice came from behind them all of a sudden. "Untie it, please."
Ab and Donald both spun around and saw a middle aged man walk towards them. He was tall and lean, wearing a suit, with black hair waving in the wind.
"Principal!" Donald exclaimed and immediately blushed.
"I was the one who enraged Dodrio," the man said calmly, looking from Donald to Aberdeen. "We do that sometimes, to see how students react to sudden situations."
"That's mean to the pokémon," Aberdeen said sternly.
The principal made an interested smile. "Pokémon grow by battling. So do humans. You have proven yourself smarter than most though, not just downright defeating the wild pokémon but actually bothering to see the context. Well done."
Aberdeen still didn't smile back, but Donald put a proud arm around his shoulders.
"Chespin, let it go," Ab said to his pokémon, not looking away from the principal's face. Chespin loosened the vines and retracted them. Dodrio, who finally had blinked away the Sand Attack, got up and ran away before anyone could bother it more.
"You have deserved this," the principal said and handed an item to the "daily". Aberdeen took it, somewhat reluctantly, and discovered that it was some kind of pokéball.
"An Ultra Ball," Donald mused. "Those can capture really rare and strong pokémon without much trouble. What a gift!"
The principal's and Aberdeen's eyes met again. "You'll meet many humans doing many strange things in this world," the man said slowly. "Make sure to always do what you think is right. And always decide what is right for yourself."
"Sure," Ab replied.
Half an hour later, Aberdeen was healing his pokémon at the pokémon center. The Ultra Ball was in his backpack and his mind was thinking hard. Donald had explained that his pokémon had evolved despite losing so many battles, mostly because they had been battling so many times. Winning didn't always matter... Which was why he had been so eager on making Aberdeen win. They seemed alike, so Donald thought he would feel proud if Aberdeen could do better in his place. Still, Aberdeen knew that the words Donald had spoken to him earlier were right in a way. If you didn't strive towards victory, why would you even want to battle at all? You had to fight to win. Donald's pokémon had evolved, but they weren't really strong or skilled. Aberdeen would rather have unevolved pokémon who believed in themselves, than evolved ones who didn't dare to go all out. Even Whismur threw himself into battle on a whim, after all. Maybe Aberdeen's own recklessness was reflecting on them already, he thought and couldn't help snickering at, as he received three pokéballs containing freshly healed pokémon from the lady behind the pokémon center counter.
It was evening on Aberdeen's third day as a pokémon trainer. Should he challenge the gym? He still hadn't properly won a battle. Well, maybe one. Would he really have a chance at the gym, even after the episode in the Academy?
Looking down at the pokéballs, he realized that he was smiling wildly. In the morning, he would do it. And try to win. It didn't matter how things actually turned out in the end, as long as he had made an effort and tried!
Melody Hughes & Christina Langley
Chapter 3 - Violet City
The Long Awaited Duel! Melody V.S. Falkner!
Before Melody had known it, the night came and went. Once she, Christina, and all of their Pokémon had enjoyed a nice morning meal, the group proceeded to make their way towards the Violet City gym. Unlike usual, Melody had been somewhat quiet the entire morning. Truth be told that even with all the training she and her team had put in up to this point, the girl was feeling more than just a little bit nervous about her upcoming battle with Falkner. Melody could not help, but find she was having second thoughts, wondering if her Pokémon would be strong enough to match up against and defeat the gym leader.
Christina seemed to have noticed Melody's quietness and gave the girl a soft smile as they walked to the gym, raising her hand to gently squeeze her shoulder. "Hey, Mel'. I know you're probably feeling really nervous, but... that's normal. It's a big thing you're about to pull off. But I believe you can do it, and as long as you do your best... even if you don't win, then you're well on your way to becoming stronger." the girl finished with a warm smile.
Melody felt a small blush run up to her cheeks as the duo neared the doors to the gym. She offered the taller girl a small smile of her own, before quickly looking away. "I guess you're right... It's just... really, super, totally important that we win today, that's all... I mean, yeah I know he's just another trainer in most aspects, but... Gyms are like a way of testing just how ready you are for bigger and tougher challenges, ya know? And if I can't manage to beat Falkner, then how am I supposed to like, move on to those bigger things?"
"Well... look at me." Chris responded, gesturing to herself. "I lost against Falkner, but it hasn't deterred me from me wanting to travel around and become stronger. I mean, sure, at first, I was... pretty devastated, but I just needed to take a step back and... look at what I needed to improve, you know? So I guess... if you do lose, it's just a way of saying that you need to find out what to do to become better, rather than just giving up, you know?"
Melody nodded again, but did not really say anything in response to her friend. Melody knew that Christina meant well, but to the shorter girl she did not really understand. Most of the point of Melody's journey revolved around taking on these gyms... to get stronger than he is, surpass what he's done... and be a better person and trainer than he is...
Melody was snapped from her thoughts from the familar chirping of the Chikorita she carried in her arms. Blossom was looking up at the trainer, giving Melody the most encouraging smile she could possibly muster. If Melody did not know any better, she would swear that it was almost as if Blossom knew how she was feeling and was trying to reassure her just as Christina was.
A light smile played on Christina's lips as she watched the Chikorita trying to encourage her trainer. "Awh. See, Blossom believes that you guys'll make it. And if you go in there and think you're not gonna make it, then you definitely won't." She stopped as they had come up to the gym's front, turning to Melody with her hands planted at her hips. "You have to believe in both yourself and your Pokémon if you wanna win. So promise me you'll go in there and win this fight, alright Mel'?"
Melody nodded, trying to muster up as bright a smile as she normally gave. "Alright... I promise."
Taking a deep breath, Melody gathered up whatever courage in herself she could find and stepped inside the doors to the Violet City gym.
Just like when Christina had entered the gym the previous day, the large, training hall-like building had a couple trainers inside, most of them sporting a bird Pokémon of some kind, chatting with others or battling. Although, due to the early hours, there weren't alot of trainers inside. Falkner was sitting, cross-legged on his podium or perch, with his Wingull sitting on his arm, which he was feeding. His head turned to Melody and Christina as they entered, his hawk-like eyes moving from one girl to the other before resuming feeding his gull.
Christina looked from Falkner to Melody and gave her a bright smile, leaning in to briefly wrap an arm around her friend, giving her a squeeze and then letting go. "Go get 'im, Mel'. I'll be over to the side if you need me." She then proceeded over to near one of the walls at the side of the area marked on the ground for battles with Falkner.
"Right... Here we go, then..." Melody thought, taking another deep breath. The girl sat her Chikorita on the ground, allowing Blossom to walk beside her as she made her way towards Falkner. "Um... 'Scuse me, Falkner?" Melold called out. Another deep breath and she then put on the most determined face she could muster up. "I'm here to challenge you to a battle!"
Blossom smiled up at her trainer, before letting out a squeak of her own, even trying to mock the look on Melody's face. Melody herself could feel her anticipation growing at this point. She had never felt this excited before starting a battle before...
Falkner kept his eyes on the Wingull resting on his arm for a little while longer as he lifted another snack for it to happily gobble down. "Hmh. Are you now?" He spoke, quietly and somewhat sternly, finally turning his head to meet both Melody and Blossom's gaze. "Very well. I'm obligated to accept your challenge, then. However, have you asked yourself whether or not you're ready to face me?"
Melody seemed hesitant to answer. She closed her eyes for a moment, thinking back to everything she had done that led up to this moment, the Spinarak incident with Blaine and Christina, her travels along Route 30 and 31, taking on the man from Team Rocket, and all her battles at the academy. Slowly, the girl nodded, realizing that she and her team were in fact as ready as they were ever going to be.
"Y-Yeah... Yeah, we are ready!" Melody answered back.
Falkner was quiet for another while yet before slowly raising from his seated position, the gull still resting on his arm, with its eyes now on the trainer and Pokémon down on the floor. "Hmh. I see. In that case, I'll delay no longer. Three on three, no healing items, and I choose Wingull for my first battler." Raising his arm a little, the gull squawked out and flew into the air, circling around Falkner for a moment before lowering itself slightly down, flapping its wings to keep hovering in the air.
Melody nodded, realizing that it all came down to this moment. She glanced down at Blossom, giving the Chikorita a determined smile. "Alright, Blossom! Lead us off!"
Blossom chirped in response and bounced in front of Melody. She gave a determined glare in Falkner and the Wingull's direction. The gym was absolutely quiet, as both sides stared each other down. The silence was only broken once Melody gave out her first command to Blossom.
"Alright, Blossom! Start off with a Razor Leaf attack!"
Swirling, razor-sharp leaves shot forth towards Falkner's Wingull. The gym leader remained perfectly calm as the leaves approached his Wingull, however. A small smile gracing his lips as he gave out a counter command.
"Wingull, Water Gun."
The Wingull squaked in response, opening its beak to release a spray of water in Blossom's direction. The water cut through the swirling leaves of the Razor Leaf attack, blasting Blossom in her face. The Chikorita staggered back a bit, not so much from the damage it may have caused, but rather from the surprise of how quick the bird managed to counter her attack.
"Now, Wingull... Attack with Wing Attack," Falkner ordered.
Wingull squawked again, diving towards Blossom with great speed. Melody's eyes widened as she quickly ordered the Chikorita to try and dodge the bird's attack. Blossom did her best to follow through with Melody's command, but the little grass-type was not fast enough to completely get away unharmed, The wing of the seagull managed to slap into Blossom's side, causing the grass-type to squeak in pain as stumbled off to the side a bit.
Still, Melody was not going to just let Blossom be pushed around in such a manner. She ordered Blossom to attempt to use another Razor Leaf attack against the Wingull. Blossom was quick to obey, sending another storm of swirling leaves at Falkner's Pokémon. Unlike before, the Wingull was not quick enough to counter or dodge the attack, the leaves cutting into her as Melody had planned. The Wingull and Falkner were far from finished, though. Wingull was quick to recover from the attack, her gym leader giving her the command to use
another Wing Attack against Blossom.
Wingull took flapping in Blossom's direction. Instead of heading straight down at her however, the Wingull circled overhead of the Chikorita for a moment, before suddenly diving down at her. This made it a bit more difficult for Melody to aid Blossom in her attempt to dodge the attack, the bird's wing slamming right into Blossom's forehead.
Meanwhile, off to the side, Chris was biting her lower lip, watching Blossom struggling against the Wingull that had taken out Sindy the day before, the Cyndaquil anxiously sitting by Chris' side while the girl fought the urge to just throw Sindy in there to help out Melody.
"Mel', if you can avoid the first attack, then Wingull'll be wide open for an attack! You can do it!"
Melody nodded in Christina's direction, before readjusting her focus to the battle at hand. The Wingull's attacks were definitely starting to show their effect on Blossom. She had only been hit by a few of the bird's Wing Attacks, but the little Chikorita was already looking like she was about ready to call it quits. Melody knew she had one way of extending Blossom's durability for the remainder of the battle.
"Finish her off, Wingull! Use another Wing Attack!" Falkner commanded.
The Wingull took off once more, diving in Blossom's direction. Melody stared at the bird, watching as it got closer and closer towards her little Chikorita. It was right when the bird was about to strike that Melody set her plan into action.
"Now, Blossom! Poison Powder!" the girl shouted. Blossom chirped in agreement, sending forth a purple, pollen-like dust at the Wingull. The powder managed to get in the bird's eyes, causing it to swerve off course and miss its intended target. Melody smiled as everything seemed to be falling all into place, and then followed up the attack with another command. "Now, use Synthesis!"
Blossom smiled brightly, closing her eyes as she began to bathe in the early morning beams of light that were peeking through the windows of the gym. Slowly, some of the Chikorita's wounds from the battle thus far began to disappear, as if by some sort of magic. Blossom let out another happy squeak as she looked determined more than ever at this point, now in a much healthier state than she was previously.
"Ha! What do ya think about that?!" Melody questioned with a proud smirk. "You said no potions, but you never said I couldn't heal her with her own abilities!"
Falkner's brows raised somewhat as the little grass Pokémon healed itself, giving off a light nod. "Good strategy. I was wondering why you had brought a grass Pokémon to a flying-type gym, but I see your plan now." He looked at Wingull, now poisoned and rather beaten-up. "Let's see if we can't raise the stakes, however. Wingull, see if you can muster up a Supersonic!"
"Blossom, hit it with Razor Leaf!" Melody ordered quickly.
She recognized the attack that Falkner had ordered his Wingull to use as the same move that almost managed to take down her Taillow during the double battle with Vincent at the academy. There was no way she was about to let a similar instance happen now. The swirling blast of leaves sailed through the air in the direction of the Wingull, managing to crash into the bird right as it used its Supersonic attack. The Razor Leaf used by Blossom managed to intercept the attack that had been meant for the Chikorita and was just enough to put down the Wingull, causing the bird to crash to the ground and faint shortly after.
Falkner sighed quietly as he raised one of his balls to recall the downed bird. "Not bad. But we're only partway through the battle. Let's see how you deal with a dark-type!" He placed his fingers in his mouth and whistled out loud and after just a few moments, a Murkrow came flying in through one of the windows, flapping down in front of Falkner with its eyes resting on Blossom with... an almost sinister look in its eyes.
"What kind of bird is that thing supposed to be...?" Melody questioned, looking at the bird curiously. "Its... really ugly..."
The comment caused Falkner to wince and stagger a little, being taken out of his otherwise serious persona. "... That's not really fair to say... and anyways," he cleared his throat, standing up straight again with his arms crossed. "You shouldn't judge a Pokémon based on how it looks. Even an ugly Pokémon can deliver devastating attacks. Murkrow, use Feint Attack!"
The crow cawed and flew down towards Blossom who steeled herself for another attack despite being rather badly damaged. However, instead of flying straight into the little grass 'mon, the Murkrow landed in front of her, suddenly looking off to the right with an astonished look on its face. This caught the Chikorita so off-guard that she couldn't help but turn her head and see what had surprised the Murkrow like that.
However, just as she turned her head, the Murkrow's eye seemed to shimmer for a moment before lunging, delivering a sharp peck to Blossom's torso while she was distracted.
"Blossom, look out" Melody cried out in shock.
Unfortunately, there was no way that the little Chikorita could have avoided this attack. Blossom let out a shrill cry of pain as Falkner's Murkrow slammed into her. This sent the Chikorita flying back towards her trainer, where she landed rather roughly close by Melody's feet. Blossom tried her best to get back up, but her energy by this point had just been spent. With a weak squeak, Blossom fell back to the ground, fainting on the spot.
Melody recalled the Chikorita back into her Pokéball. She gave the ball a small smile. "You did a great job out there, Blossom... Get some rest, okay?" She placed the ball back on her belt and returned her focus to Falkner and his Murkrow. She could tell that Falkner was probably going to be giving it his all now. Melody knew that she would have to fight just as hard, if not harder. Taking hold of another Pokéball, the trainer threw it out, sending out her next Pokémon into battle.
"Time to fight fire with fire! Or um... feather with feather!" Melody shouted as a familiar Taillow emerged from the capsule. "Hawk, you're on!"
"If it's an aerial battle you want, then I'm happy to oblige you." Falkner replied, keeping his arms crossed over his chest and his calm, serious demeanor almost radiating from him as he commanded the Murkrow who had taken to the 'skies' once again.
The Murkrow and Hawk locked eyes with each other. For a brief moment, Melody could have sworn that there was a small twinkle in the Taillow's eyes and a small glare on Murkrow's face, almost as if the crow was taunting Hawk to just try and attack him. Hawk quickly began to flap his wings, taking to the sky as well. Her bird seemed quite anxious to fight the Murkrow, so Melody decided to oblige.
"Murkow, use Feint Attack!" Falkner ordered.
Much like it had with Blossom, Murkrow cawed and quickly looked over to the right in surprise. Hawk would follow his gaze, wondering what caught his opponent so off guard. With the Taillow distracted, Murkrow quickly dived, aiming beak first at the Taillow. However unlike Blossom, Melody knew that Hawk could counter against this attack.
"Hawk, use Quick Attack now!" Melody shouted.
Hawk squawked in response and quickly zoomed straight towards Murkrow. The two birds flew straight at each other, both crashing into each other with great force. The two flying Pokémon fell back from each other, just barely managing to keep in the air from the force that they managed to strike each other with.
"Good job, Hawk! But don't let up now! Focus Energy, quick!" Melody commanded.
"Murkrow, attack the Taillow with Peck!" Falkner ordered at that exact same moment.
Hawk gave a quick chirp, before turning his focus onto the Murkrow. The bird felt a surge of energy rush through him. Unfortunately, the attack had left him momentarily vulnerable for Murkrow's attack. The crow flew and tackled into the Taillow. His beak slammed into the bird, knocking Hawk back with a screech of pain. Melody bit her lip as Hawk fell to the ground, landing with a rough sounding squawk. Still, the bird seemed to refuse to give up just yet. Taillow managed to pick himself back off the ground, returning to the air to continue the battle against Falkner's Murkrow.
"Hawk... We can do it, just hang in there!" Melody shouted, cheering on her bird Pokémon.
Falkner sighed, shaking his head slowly. "You might want to consider calling your Taillow back... I think it's clear that it is outmatched in this scenario."
Melody gave a fierce glare in the gym leader's direction. "Hawk is more than strong enough to finish this battle!"
Falkner simply shook his head again in response. "Murkrow, finish the Taillow off with Pursuit!"
Murkrow let out a loud caw before diving straight for Hawk. Melody's eyes widened at the speed in which the crow was suddenly flying. Turning her focus to her Taillow, the trainer quickly ordered the Taillow to fly away from the attack and get some space between himself and the Murkrow. Hawk took to the sky, quickly flapping his wings as hard as he could. However the Murkrow was right on his tail, as if it was some kind of heat-seeking missle.
"Crap... There's no way we're gonna be able to avoid this attack..." Melody thought as she watched her Taillow try and escape from the Murkrow's attack. Her eyes narrowed and she bit her bottom lip tightly. "Sorry about this, Hawk... but it's you alone or both of you at the same time... Use Steel Wing, now!"
Hawk squaked in response, quickly swerving around and diving right towards the Murkrow. His left wing began to shine as if it was made of solid steel. Both birds were practically on top of each other at this point. A great crash occurred. Murkrow slammed right into Hawk's flying body, while Hawk slammed his steel-like wing right into the Murkrow's head. Both of the bird Pokémon fell to the ground, landing roughly on the ground by each other. The two battling trainers were absolutely silent as they watched their Pokémon... Both birds had managed to faint, resulting in a double K.O. for this round of the battle.
Melody smiled softly as she recalled Hawk into his Pokéball. "That was totally amazing, Hawk. Great work!" she said, thanking the Taillow before returning his ball to her belt.
"Hmm." Falkner replied as he pulled out another Pokéball, recalling his Murkrow. "Not bad. You managed to turn a bad situation somewhat around. I'm impressed. However, I've saved my strongest Pokémon for last. And I hope you have as well." Placing his fingers in his mouth again, he let out another sharp whistle, which prompted a Pidgeotto to almost instantly come swooping in through one of the windows, flying around the arena in a circle before lowering itself down to land on Falkner's arm.
The bird looked just as serious as Falkner did, and it was clear neither of them were going to pull any punches. "This is it. It's time to show us if you and your Pokémon have the conviction to defeat us. Go, Pidgeotto!" He called out, raising his arm as the bird flapped its wings, flying down to hover above the ground, out of reach of most Pokémon.
Melody watched the Pidgeotto, before glancing down at the ball holding her last remaining Pokémon. The girl was starting to feel a bit anxious at this point. The entire battle now came down to this fight... and to be honest, Falkner had her up against a wall...
"Fighting an evolved flyer with a Pokémon that's landbound is definitely gonna be a challenge... I just have to hope that he can manage to pull this off..." Melody thought. Taking a deep breath, the girl took hold of her final Pokéball and tossed it out into the battle. The ball snapped open, revealing Napoelon to be waiting inside. The Buizel glanced around, his eyes laying on the Pidgeotto, he crossed his arms with a huff, looking rather unimpressed by the bird. "Alright, Napoleon! It's all up to you!"
"I believe in you, guys! Go Mel', go Napoleon!" Christina cheered from the sidelines, jumping somewhat on the spot. She clearly had a hard time keeping a lid on her excitement, and even Sindy's back had flared up and was burning bright with flames while the little 'mon squeaked encouragingly to Napoleon.
"Your Pokémon are strong," Falkner commented, still standing with his arms crossed while looking at the newest challenger of his birds, the Pidgeotto seeming just as stoic as him. "Expecially this one. Which means that I'll have to best him in speed! Pidgeotto, use Quick-Attack!" The bird flapped its wings to gain some height before pulling itself forward with one, firm wing-stroke and then pressing its wings tightly against its body, shooting it forwards at a blurry speed, straight towards Napoleon.
Melody's eyes widened as the bird crashed right into Napoleon, sending the little otter Pokémon flying back with a small grunt. The Buizel seemed to only be slightly phased by the attack however. He quickly scrambled back up to his feet, a small growl being heard as he eyed the Pidgeotto carefully. Falkner's last Pokémon was fast... However, Napoleon was not exactly slow compared to it by any means.
"We can give that hurt right back, Napoleon! Attack Pidgeotto with a Quick Attack of your own!" Melody commanded.
The Buizel grunted in response. He took off running towards the bird on all four paws, suddenly launching himself into the air as if he was some sort of rocket. His eyes narrowed as he began to close in on his target.
Both the Pidgeotto and Falkner seemed surprised as the Buizel practically flew into the air and rocketed up towards the bird. "... Pidgeotto, use Gust to-" Falkner called out, but it was too late. His hesitation gave Napoleon the momentum he needed as he crashed into the bird, sending it reeling backwards, flapping its wings to desperately keep itself in the air.
"Hrngh... seems like I didn't quite read that right..." Falkner grumbled, seeming rather annoyed, which was very uncharacteristic from his usual, collected self. Taking a deep breath to steady himself, he directed his bird once again. "Pidgeotto, use Sand Attack, let's see how well it'll hit when it can't see!" The bird chirped and began flapping its wings, the light layer of sand covering the arena blowing up in somewhat of a sandstorm in the small arena. Christina was forced to lift her arm to cover her mouth, coughing a little while taking a step back to avoid getting sand in her eyes.
Napoleon grunted in annoyance as sand was suddenly stirred up and flapped into his eyes. The Buizel began to rub his eyes with his paws furiously, trying his best to get the dirt out of them. Napoleon opened his eyes up just a small amout, squinting as he looked about for any sign of the bird.
"Its straight in front of you, Napoleon! Quick, charge at it with another Quick Attack!" Melody shouted.
Napoleon did his best to attack the Pidgeotto. He took off running in the direction Melody had told him to, charging quickly on all fours. However, things did not work out just how Melody had wanted. Rather, the bird remained unharmed as Napoleon charged right past her, slamming right into a nearby wall. The Buizel let out a quick groan as he picked himself up off the floor, once more trying to brush the sand from its eyes.
"Well done Pidgeotto, now blow him away with a Gust!" Falkner called out, quite visibly getting worked up as well by now. The bird flew slightly closer to the Buizel before flapping its wings furiously as if building up energy before finally pulling its wings back and then forwards in a powerful motion, unleashing a powerful gust of wind aimed at the otter.
"Napoleon, just hang on!" Melody ordered.
She knew there was little the Buizel could do at the moment to defend himself from the Pidgeotto's attacks. Her only hope rested in Napoleon's durability to the attacks. A howl of pain escaped the Buizel's mouth as the wind stirred up by Pidgeotto's gust attack cut into Napoleon, causing him to stagger back. The attack could have done a lot worse, had he not managed to brace himself before hand.
Christina bit her lower lip and gripped her elbows tightly in order to not rip at her clothes or worse, Sindy. The battle could go either way at this point, but Falkner was very experienced, even with his title of 'Weakest gym leader', he was proving more than a handful for Melody. A sudden moment of clarity hit Christina, her eyes widening as she realized what Melody had to do to get rid of the sand blocking Napoleon's sight. She opened her mouth to call out to her friend, but caught herself mid-shout.
If she helped her friend, she would probably win the battle, but... then Chris had been part of the reason she had, and she knew that if Melody had done that to her, she would have been grateful, but at the same time, it would feel like a pretty empty victory. She thought back to the monk and Falkner's words before deciding to keep her advice to herself. Instead, she smiled and called out to her friend. "Come on Mel', you've got him on the ropes! Just one or two attacks and Pidgeotto is done for!"
Falkner seemed to have become his collected, unimpressed self again, shaking his head. "No, I believe the battle is over. Pidgeotto, hit him with another Quick-Attack and finish this." The bird narrowed its hawk-like eyes on the otter, circling the air once before diving down towards him once more, its wings pressed firmly to its sides.
"N-No... I can't lose now... We can't lose! If we lose now, all that work we did will be for nothing!" Melody thought in panic.
There had to be something that she and Napoleon could do to turn this battle around and quick. However, the options seemed to be quite limited in Napoleon's blinded state. There just had to be a way that he could counter the bird with one solid attack! Melody gasped as she remembered something that could do just that.
"Napoleon! Sonic Boom straight ahead, now!" the girl shouted to her Buizel. The Buizel let out a quick grunt as he slapped his front paws together quickly. A quick and fast wave of energy shot forth, zooming straight at the direction of Falkner's Pidgeotto! WIth the bird in mid-dive, there was no way she could possibly avoid the attack. "Come on... Hit it..."
Falkner's eyes widened slightly at the sudden attack, he seemed torn as to what to do, but ultimately called out to his bird. "Pidgeotto, attack it straight-on! Use your speed to dive straight through the wind!"
Pidgeotto did as she was told, diving towards Napoleon at break-neck speed, as the blast of wind sent out from the otter swiftly moved closer as well. A breathless second went by before the two collided. At first, it seemed like both the blast of air and the Pidgeotto were locked in place with the bird trying to press through the wind and the 'bubble' of air desperate to take the bird with it, but ultimately, the 'bubble' of wind blasted past and Pidgeotto was sent spiralling off to the side due to the sudden impact, slamming against the floor.
Pidgeotto slowly staggered onto its feet, but stumbled and fell over on her side again, the attack having seemingly heavily damaged her due to meeting it head-on with a speed just-not-enough to break through it. Falkner sighed and shook his head, bringing out his Pokéball with a small smile as he recalled it. "That's enough, Pidgeotto. You fought well."
He then turned his eyes towards Melody and Napoleon and gave a nod, his expression still firm. "... As did you, young trainer. I concede, you win."
Melody gasp as if she had been holding her breath for some time. She fell to the ground, landing on her knees quietly. She stared out at the battlefield, a look of disbelief on her face.
"W-We won...?" she whispered quietly. "W-We won... We won!"
And just like that, the moment of silence passed. Melody climbed to her feet, dashing towards Napoleon with haste. She scooped the Buizel into her arms, squeezing him tightly as she spun around.
"We did it! We won!" Melody cheered, hugging Napoleon tightly. The Buizel in her arms began to squirm and flail about, as if trying to pry himself from the girl's arms.
Watching the trainer and her Pokémon, Falkner offered a light smile as he began to proceed down the pedestal-staircase-type thing he had been standing on all this time, walking over in front of Melody. This close, he wasn't actually that much taller than her, probably about the same height as Christina now that he was up close.
"You fought well. Both you and your Pokémon. Congratulations, young trainer." He proceeded to reach behind him, picking out something before offering his hand forwards to Melody, a small badge laying in the palm of his hand in the shape of a feather. "I offer to you the Zephyr badge, as proof that you've won against me, and taken your first step on your way to the Pokémon League challenge... if you desire to take that path." He offered a stoic little nod of his head as if telling her to pick up the badge.
Melody slowly reached out, taking the badge in hand. She had been waiting so long for a moment like this. She was finally taking that first step, finally starting that path that would lead to him. Melody almost wanted to pinch herself, thinking that this whole thing was just some sort of dream. Still, the girl managed to somehow remain calm, thanking Falkner for a battle well fought. With the Zephyr badge in hand, she turned and faced Christina, excitement written all over the shorter girl's face.
Just as Melody turned around, Christina practically slammed into her, wrapping her arms around the girl to give her a squeeze, having made her way over as soon as she had taken the badge from Falkner. She pulled back after a moment, a bright, proud smile on her lips. "You did it, Mel'! I told you you'd do well! Congrats!"
Melody felt her cheeks heat up rather quickly, not expecting to be hugged so quickly like this. "Y-Yeah! You did... Thanks, Chrissy, really..."
The red-haired girl continued to smile warmly, raising a gloved hand to brush a strand of hair away from her face, but it quickly fell down in front of her eye again. "You did -so- well. I wish I could fight as well as you. But man, that last fight was completely mindblowing!" Sindy had meanwhile made her way over to them as well, looking up at Napoleon as she gave off a happy, congratulatory squeak up at Napoleon. As if noticing this, Chris smiled and lowered a hand to pat Napoleon on the head. "And you were -so- cool. Well done, Napoleon!"
Napoleon glanced down at Sindy, giving the little Cyndaquil a rather impassive sounding grunt in response to her cheers. The odd moment for the Buizel only escalated as Christina went to pat Naploen on his head. The Buizel quickly huffed in response, finally managing to slip out of Melody's grip. He quickly moved away from the girls and crossed his arms over his chest in a rather defiant looking manner. However, if one were to look just close enough, they would manage to see a small twinge of blush grace the Buizel's cheeks.
Christina smiled as Napoleon stepped a little off to the side, before she turned back to Melody, clapping her hands together. "You really were amazing, Mel'. Well done."
"Well... I probably wouldn't have done too hot at all if you and Sindy hadn't been cheerin' me on, ya know..." Melody replied with a smile. "Thanks, Chrissy..."
Shaking her head, the red-haired girl sent her friend a soft smile. "Of course you would have. But I still wouldn't have missed the fight for the world. Thanks for having me along, Mel."
With a nod, Melody took the badge and placed it in her pocket for the time being. She decided that once she had time, she would put it properly inside a badge case. However for now, she needed to get her team the healing and rest they deserved. Today's battle against Falkner was, but one small step towards her goal... Her journey was just beginning, but with this victory, Melody could already tell a bright future was ahead of her.
"There we go. Done," Vincent said to himself, closing up his sketchbook. He picked himself off the ground, stretching out his limbs, and then proceeded to stuff all his spare belongings back into the bag. Drawing was a good way to get all the bad energy out and it allowed him to compose himself before heading off to the Pokemon Gym. He heard Falkner wasn't exactly easy, especially considering Evan didn't beat him and he put up a decent fight against Vincent earlier. That and he wanted to have a story to tell if he ever decided to go back there. Capturing the sun, lake and Sprout Tower in his own stylized way of drawing out landscapes and people should be enough evidence to say he was at Violet City.
That and this morning reminded him of how bad yesterday really was.
————
Vincent woke up shivering. Not because he was cold. Not because he was wet. But because something hung over him making the air heavy with apprehension. I have a bad feeling about today, he found himself thinking repeatedly. As he stirred from his seat, a blanket crumbled to the ground. Vincent didn't recall throwing one over himself the night before. So where did it come from? Vincent looked around the room, scanning every inch in a few brief moments.
"Your girlfriend came in last night and draped the blanket over you. You looked cold," the nurse at the desk said, noticing Vincent frantically looking around.
"My what?" Vincent said, standing up and making his way to the desk, handing her a folded blanket.
"Your girlfriend. Short girl. Long pigtails. She's quite cute~" the nurse continued, giggling.
"She's not my girlfriend. She's just a girl."
"Awh, no need to be shy."
"I'm hardly shy," Vincent said, repulsed at the suggestion.
Vincent shuddered at the flashback, making his way from his drawing spot over to the local PokeMart. His stomach began to growl and he knew he needed some supplies after he beat Falkner. As he entered the store, he heard distant beeping to notify the employees that Vincent walked in. No doubt they would spend extra time watching him because of his appearance. He offered a smirk to the cashiers and picked up a basket and skimmed through the aisles. He tossed a handful of potions and a few Pokeballs, as well as nabbing a bunch of snack foods to appease his growling stomach. A foldable tent caught Vincent's eye, but he knew he hardly had the cash to afford that. In the long run, it would be useful, but Vincent told himself it would ruin the experience of living on the road. The cashiers glared at Vincent as he emptied his basket onto the counter. They quietly told him what he owed and Vincent even more quietly paid. Sure, the temptation to steal everything and bounce, but Vincent did not want to mess with law enforcement before he faced Falkner. Knowing his luck, Violet City cops were not as easy to play off and who knows what happens to trainers when they face legal trouble.
Vincent stepped outside, and filed away his shopping spree into his bag. Not the most organized of people, the task proved intimidating but in time the backpack was as organized as it was going to get. Snacking on the food was just as empty as every other meal, hardly quenching the hunger he had built up. At least it meant he could eat on the road and save time. Vincent challenged himself to eating and skating at the same time, and surprisingly did well. The crash from yesterday echoed in his mind, so for once he decided to go a bit slower. In no time, he reached the gym. The morning sun rested high in the sky, reminding Vincent that it was probably closer to midday. Great. I'll kick Falkner's ass and then reward myself with some lunch. It was amazing when ideas came together.
Vincent practically kicked down the door, entering the well lit training hall. There were a couple of trainers, a bulk of them appearing to own bird Pokemon. Or at least a Pokemon or two with wings. There were a few other trainers, yet Vincent paid them no heed. Vincent plowed through the other trainers and shrugged off any other trainer who attempted to stop him for whatever reason. Those who really tried were met with a glare as fearsome as that of an Arbok. "Falkner! You know what I want."
Falkner turned to face Vincent, appearing to be tending to his Pidgeotto. "You wish to take the Gym Leader challenge then? As Violet City's Gym Leader, I welcome your challenge. Yet, I do hope you are taking this battle light-"
"Cut the crap!" Vincent roared. "If I didn't think I was ready, I wouldn't be here!" He stood tall, with all the trainers clearing what appeared to be the battlefield. Vincent was confident and his Pokemon shared the same intensity that he had boiling in his heart. There was a fire burning in their eyes. Hanzo and Brian were fighters through and through. Vincent admired their strength and they admired his leadership. In fact, he smiled at the challenge.
Falkner returned the smile. "Hmh. It is common to see trainers like you come through that the door. I do truly wonder if you will be different." Falkner tossed out a Pokeball, with a Murkow flying out from the light. "Three on three battle. No healing items."
"Fine by me," Vincent replied, progressively becoming more cocky as the heat of battle filled the air. Vincent threw out his first Pokemon, with Brian the Pidgey taking the stage. It only felt appropriate that Vincent play at Falkner's game, proving that he isn't that special. "Brian, start off with a Sand Attack!" Brian chirped lowly and flapped his wings strongly, kicking up a thick cloud of dust and sand. Falkner's Murkow flew through the cloud, attempt to pursue the Pidgey despite the cloud. However, Brian flew up, narrowly avoiding the Murkow's Pursuit. Flanking his opponent, Brian blasted Murkow with a strong Gust. The strong wind knocked the bird down into the ground. Murkow quickly recovered and flew up to match Brian, pestering him with a sharp Peck attack.
"Use another Sand Attack!"
"Feint Attack," Falkner said with a nod, speaking with a unemotional sting. Brian kicked up another storm, covering the stage with more particles. Yet, the Murkow broke through the storm, smacking Brian with a stiff attack. Vincent's face twisted in frustration, yet he believed in Brian.
"Brian! Use another Gust!" Brian blew a sharp wind at Murkow, battering the bird back into the cloud. The Murkow lost itself in the cloud, desperately trying to fly out of it. However, Pidgey's superior speed came into play, as he knocked the Murkow back into the cloud with a stiff tackle. Murkow attempted to fly out in another direction, slowly sinking into a panic. However, Brian's keen eyes read the move and he knocked Murkow with another tackle. Falkner's eyes revealed the loss of composure. Unable to see what Murkow was doing, he lost control of the Pokemon.
"Murkow, use another Feint Attack," he cried.
"Brian. Gust," Vincent said, copying Falkner's earlier speech patterns. A large gust of wind consumed the hall, clearing the sand and in its a wake, a black bird crashed to the ground in defeat.
Falkner recalled his fallen Pokemon and nodded his head, absorbing what had just occurred. "An interesting strategy, though I believe that was mostly luck," he said, applauding but also disarming Vincent's newfound advantage. He drew out another Pokeball, throwing towards the arena without another word. "I trust my Wingull will change the tide of battle back to my favor."
Wingull flew a quick lap around the gym, stretching out its long wings. "Now, start off with a wing attack!" WIngull made a broad charge towards Brian, stopping short of the Pidgey and swung its wings in a wide fashion. Brian narrowly avoiding the move and countered with a quick tackle. Wingull, losing some altitude, tried to regain the advantage with a Supersonic. Brian unable to see the attack suddenly lost it's serious glare. Vincent gulped at the sight, recognizing the signs of confusion from his experiences with Melody back in the academy. Falkner had truly regained the upper hand. "Now! While it's confused, use another wing attack!" Wingull flew with confidence and smacked the Pidgey back down to earth. With a loud thump, the Pidgey collapsed in defeat.
"Tch," Vincent spat as he recalled Brian back to his Pokeball. With two Pokemon left, Falkner controlled the flow of battle now. Vincent was hoping Brian could chip away a bit more, but he couldn't be too disappointed with the Pidgey. He did well all things considered. It was all up to Hanzo now, as Vincent threw out his last Pokeball. The bright lights made way for the Froakie as he leapt out, ready to enter the fray. "Froakie, let's end this quickly. Aerial Ace!"
Falkner's eyes widened just enough for Vincent to catch it. The Froakie leapt into the air and struck the Wingull with blinding speed, bringing the flying type back down to reality. It attempted to retaliate with a Wing Attack, but Hanzo caught him before it was able to complete the sweeping motion with a Quick Attack. The Wingull was knocked back, and struggled to move as it ate the dirt. The Wingull looked back at Falkner, pleading to end the fight in which its trainer obliged.
"I commend your skills, trainer," Falkner was forced to admit.
"Feel free to quit now," Vincent said with a smirk.
"You won't earn your badge that way," Falkner reminded Vincent. "Go Pidgeotto." With a shake of his head, the Pidgeotto flew out to the field and stood before Hanzo.
"Quick Attack!" Both trainers yelled in unison. Both Pokemon struck each other nearly at the same time, with Pidgeotto appearing to gain the upper hand following the clash. Hanzo was still regaining his composure when Pidgeotto buffeted the Pokemon with a gust, knocking Hanzo almost off the stage.
"Use Bubble!" Vincent ordered. As Pidgeotto charged forward, the bird Pokemon was swarmed by a wave of bubbles. The attack doused the flying type, soaking her wings. Hanzo leapt back and blasted the Pidgeotto with another Bubble. Pidgeotto appeared to be significantly slower, but managed to blitz Hanzo with a strong tackle, knocking Hanzo back several feet. Both Pokemon appeared to be worn out. Pidgetto attempted to gather wind beneath its wings, while Hanzo struggled to return to his feet. In turn, both Falkner and Vincent had to maintain facades of confidence. It was unclear whether it was for their Pokemon or for themselves, as if to keep the psychological edge.
"Quick attack!" The words echoed through the halls, both Falkner and Vincent yelling the words. The two Pokemon charged at each other. A clash roared through the halls of the gym. The room fell silent as everyone listened to the body of a Pokemon slide across the floor.
"Return…Pidgeotto," Falkner weakly said. Vincent recalled Hanzo and walked over to Falkner, scoffing at any trainer that approached him. Falkner searched through his pockets and handed Vincent his prize. "Here is your badge. You battle with ferocity. I hope to see you continue your success, if I am to be honest."
"Oh yeah?" Vincent said. "Well, keep your eyes glued to the TV then. I'm sure you'll see me around."
Melody Hughes and Vincent Baker
Chapter 4 - Leaving Violet City
A Reunion And A Field Trip
50px-Zephyr_Badge.png
After defeating Falkner at his gym in Violet City, Melody made one final trip back to the Pokémon Center to heal her friends back up from the gruelling battle. As the nurse attended to the girl's Pokémon, Melody waited at the counter. She stared down at the badge she had won from Falkner intently, still having a bit of a hard time actually believing she had managed to get a hold of the badge.
"It sort of feels like some a dream or something... I never thought the day would come that I would finally manage to get a hold of one of these... And yet, here it is!" Melody thought.
Slowly, a small smile crept upon her lips. Melody knew her path from here. She would have to continue to work hard as she did here in Violet City, and then take on the next gym leader to earn their badge and test herself and her Pokémon's strength. Of course, Melody did not actually know where the next gym was... But she was not about to let such a minor detail derail her plans at this point.
"Excuse me, miss?" a familiar voice called out, snapping Melody from her thoughts.
The girl turned around, quickly looking at the nurse with a small smile. "S-Sorry about that, guess I was zonin' out again..."
The nurse offered a small smile and giggle at Melody's apology. "It's no trouble, dear. Your Pokémon are back in tip-top shape."
Melody smiled, thanking the nurse as she took the balls which contained her team and placed them back at her waist. She prepared to leave, but an idea flashed into her head before doing so. She quickly turned back to the nurse.
"Um, can I ask a question?" Melody began, earning a small, curious nod and glance from the nurse. "Can you tell me where the nearest Pokémon Gym is? Oh, after this one of course."
"Well, there are actually two close by..." the nurse began. She directed Melody to a small map of the Johto region that was hanging on a nearby wall. "The closest gym is located in Ecruteak City... Although that one can be a bit tough for less experienced trainers to head for next. Most trainers actually head for the gym located in Azalea Town."
"I see..." Melody replied, looking at the map carefully.
While the girl did not actually know which way she should head for the next gym, Melody decided she could always make up her mind upon leaving town. She thanked the nurse once more for her help, before making her way briskly towards the exit of the Pokémon Center.
And then she ran into a stiff body. Vincent had just walked through the automatic doors and paying little attention to much of anything as replaying his victory over Falkner was far too gratifing to really ignore. Sure, the battle was a lot closer than he expected to be. And sure, he barely really won. But that didn't really matter. History was told by the victors and Vincent could muck up any real story that he wanted when people decide to ask him about his conquest. "Hey, watch it!" Vincent yelled at the air as he attempted to find who dared step in his way. Yet the air seemed awfully...empty. So, he rationalized the person was smaller, so he slowly lowered his head downward. In that moment, his life flashed before his eyes. Sweat began to drop from his brow and his teeth clenched. "Damn it," he mumbled under his breath. Today went from great...to terrible.
Melody had not been as lucky as the person who she managed to plow into. The short girl ended up losing her balance quite quickly, falling onto her backside with a surprised "Eep!" escaping her lips. This was followed quickly by a small groan as the girl slowly looked up, preparing to apologize to the person who had received the rather unimpressive greeting... only the apology did not come right away. Rather, her eyes went wide as a bright smile graced her lips.
"Oh my gawd, Vinny!" Melody exclaimed, quickly picking herself off of her feet. The girl dusted her shorts off, despite the floor of the center being quite clean before making her way closer to the boy. "I'm totally sorry! I wasn't payin' attention at all to where I was goin'! Are you okay? I didn't hurt you did I?"
"Only my sanity is suffering," he grunted, walking past Melody and heading towards the nurse to get his team healed up. He quietly placed his Pokeballs on a tray and handed it to the nurse, making sure to use as few words as possible. He just needed to heal his Pokemon and skip town. If memory served right, he would have to head south towards Azalea Town for the next gym challenge, but he probably would try to catch a couple more Pokemon so he didn't have to overwork Brian and Hanzo. Now that he thought about it, that was a good idea. Extra training on the way wouldn't hurt eiither.
Melody followed behind Vincent, still smiling as she stood beside him at the counter. "I wasn't expectin' to see ya again so soon, Vinny. How ya been? Wha'cha been up to?"
Vincent felt himself practically growling with frustration, seething with a desire to yell. He needed to stay calm. "I...beat Falkner. And now I'm here."
"You too?!" Melody exclaimed. "I took him on too! It was really a fun battle... kinda hard too, but we managed to pull it off!" Melody opened her palm, showing off the Zephyr Badge she had received from Falkner, as if some for proof was going to be needed.
"I know what the badge looks like," Vincent said reminding her that he did win. He was a bit surprised she beat Falkner, but then again a relatively simple strategy on his part seized the win in Vincent's case. The nurse, as quietly as Vincent handled it, gave Vincent his Pokemon and winked at him. It was the same nurse from before and he knew what she was hinting at it. He simply gave her a sharp glare and made his way for the door, trying to leave Melody in the dust as he bolted outside.
Vincent was unfortunately not as lucky as he wanted to be. Melody followed right behind the boy, quickening her pace until she was eventually walking right beside the boy. She took a moment to reach into one of the pouches of her backpack, pulling a small case from it. She then carefully placed her first badge inside the case, smiling down at it before she put the case back inside her backpack.
"I had talked to the nurse about where I should be headin' next... She said that there were two gyms nearby," Melody began to talk. "I can't decide where I wanna go next, though. She said that there was a gym in Ecruteak City and one in Azalea Town... You're takin' on the gyms too, right? Which one are you gonna take on next, Vinny?"
I really should lie. I really really should lie. But something tells me she will find out and hunt me down. And if I did learn anything from my little sister: hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Melody is a few years older too, so she may be even more cruel, Vincent thought to himself, his mind pacing. He could only sigh: "Probably Azalea. I'll need to catch more Pokemon though. So I am going to wander and do really boring things. You should head there right away though. I am sure you can handle it!" He feigned his excitement, hopefully that building up Melody's confidence would cause her "ditch" him.
"Oh, no. I'm not in a hurry at all!" Melody replied with a grin. "Besides, traveling with friends is fun! We could go together until we get to Azalea!"
Oh, Arceus. Why? What have I done to deserve such punishment? Okay, so I bullied a bunch of kids. And stole a lot of things. But, it was all for the greater good. Please, please have mercy. That rich broad is better company. Okay, maybe not. She's a total hypocritical...scratch that. You want me to be nice? Is that what you want oh great divine being?. Vincent swallowed whatever left of his pride was left: "Uh, yeah. Sure...I guess?"
"Alright then! It's decided!" Melody cheered with glee. "The adventures of Melody and Vinny begin now!"
I only agreed to one adventure... Vincent felt himself facepalm, groaning as Melody's gleeful gait got her ahead of Vincent's defeated stumble. At this point, he realized he was never going to escape her. Or at least it was going to be very hard.
Melody on the other hand was absolutely beside herself with glee. She had not gotten to travel about with a friend since she, Christina, and Blaine met in small wooded area way back on Route 30. She began to hum happily to herself as she walked beside Vincent, glancing up at the taller boy and giving him a warm smile. They walked towards the town exit like that for a while, when a sudden realization hit Melody. Aside from his name and what Pokémon he had on his team, Melody did not exactly know a lot about Vincent. Likewise, the same could be same of him about her. The girl nodded at the thought, deciding that a little conversation about themselves would be a good idea while traveling.
"So, Vinny!" Melody began,placing her hands behind her back as talked. "Why don't we get to know each other a bit better? You know, we could talk about family, our life back home, our Pokémon... Just about anythin'!"
Vincent felt his face twist. He agreed to go to one town with her, not talking about himself. He would need to be clever to get out of this one. He didn't need her loud mouth knowing anything about him. "Why don't you start us off?" he suggested.
"Okay then, no problem!" Melody replied. "Well, my name is Melody, but you knew that already, huh? Anyways, I'm 15 years old and I was born and raised in Cherrygrove, along with my identical twin sister, Emily. My mom works as a nurse at the Pokémon Center back there."
Wow, she's 15. I expected like 10 or something. Like all those trainers on TV that said they started at 10 or whatever. I mean, can I really blame myself? She looks about 12. Acts like 8 or something. 10 just seemed like a good guess. Vincent just kept walking, half listening to her and half not.
Pausing for a moment, Melody took hold of the Pokéball that held Blossom and let the little Chikorita out of it. She chirped happily to see her trainer, to which Melody responded by scooping her up and carrying Blossom comfortably in her arms. Glancing back up at Vincent she resumed her little story about herself.
"Ever since I was a little girl I wanted to be a trainer," Melody said, slowly starting to slip into another one of her ramblings. "My sister always said that I was silly and I should probably have picked a bit more of a stable career choice. But you know, I always said that sort of life is so capital 'B' booooorin', am I right? I mean sure, I guess financially it's a bit more of a secure life and all that stuff, but I mean could you imagine wakin' up every day to do the same exact thing every day, go to the same place every day... I'd go absolutely crazy with that sort of life if it were me, I dunno about you! So, I told Emily that she could keep on goin' on and bein' a teacher, but the life of a trainer was definitely for me!"
Heh, almost reminds of myself. Though I didn't have anyone trying to stop me. I guess they would know better than to try.
Melody closed her eyes for a moment, thinking back to when she received her Chikorita and Pokédex from Professor Pine. "Luckily for me, the professor must've seen a bit of promise in me. I was allowed to pick one of the Pokémon he had and received a Pokédex of my own to go on a journey of my very own! It was totally awesome, you know?" Blossom nodded, glancing up at Vincent and began to chirp away, as if adding her own informaton to Melody's story. Of course, what she was actually saying neither one of them actually knew. "So, as you can tell I got Blossom here as my first Pokémon. But the weird thing was that Professor Pine wanted me to take careful observations and notes about Blossom as she grows... Apparently there's supposed to be somethin' special about her... Like, see? Her color is totally different than normal Chikorita... I guess that's supposed to be related to that research he's wantin' me to help him with..."
She doesn't shut up does she? Vincent observed. At least it took any heat off of him to say anything. Melody reminded me of those little kids he would see running around Central Goldenrod, yelling about how exciting the life of a trainer was or how exciting it would be to get a rare Pokemon. Vincent hated them. He loathed their youthful innocence and progressively developed a disdain for the trainer life. The irony is that he was on the flipside. It was a choice but not one he took lightly. After all, it was the only way someone like him could make something of himself. He didn't have the talent, money or luck to make himself a movie star or any kind of celebrity like that. And it was the trainers that earned the spotlight nowadays. If he was to stand along their side, he would have to do it on the road. Hypocricy was a small price to pay if he was to succeed. But Melody didn't need to know that. No one needed to know that. It was his secret to keep. His burden, if it counted as one, to bear.
"That's...uh, a great story," Vincent finally said. He didn't really know what to say to her regarding her oddly colored Pokemon or her experience with Professor Pine. When he recieved his things, he didn't really say much or pay any heed to what actually occured. Most of it felt like it took place eons ago, though it was less than a few days in the past. He just wanted his Pokemon and hit the road to get where he needed to go as fast as he could. Pokemon training may not be a race, but Vincent intended to treat it like one whenever he could. He was impatient in that regard, wanting to reach the promised land before any one else.
"What about yourself?" Melody questioned, smiling up at Vincent. "I'm sure you don't wanna just hear about me... Why not talk about yourself some?"
"No thanks," Vincent said, verging on being explictly rude. "Not my thing." What was telling her anything going to do for him? Would it make his Pokemon stronger? Would it beat a Gym Leader for him? Would it suddenly give him the meaning of life? Would it make him a better person? Plus, how could he trust her with anything? She would just blabber everything. Melody would probably want a reason for his behavior. "My story is not worth telling," he finally added flatly.
"Oh... W-Well, that's fine!" Melody replied with a smile. "I mean, we haven't known each other that long... So I guess I sort of being a busy Beedrill by tryin' to butt into your business like that."
Vincent was caught offguard, losing his balance for half a second. "Wait, really?" Vincent blinked. "You aren't going to demand an answer or something?"
"Of course not, Vinny!" Melody replied, laughing at how surprised he seemed. "I'm not some little kid or anythin' like that. Besides, what kinda friend would I be if I decided to make you do a bunch of stuff you didn't wanna? A terrible one, that's what kind."
"So we are friends now?" He said, raising an eyebrow.
"Well, yeah!" Melody responded. "I mean, we're both trainers, both goin' after badges... both travelin' together... seems like the sorta thing friends do to me!"
Vincent felt himself smirk. Friends because its convienent, I guess. I'll see what happens. I am stuck with her for a while. I may as well get used to it. "I guess I can tell you one thing. I'm from Goldenrod. Be on good behavior and maybe I'll tell you more."
"Ooooh, Goldenrod..." Melody said. Her eyes lighting up with excitement. "I've always wanted to go to Goldenrod. That's where the big radio tower is, right? Oh yeah, and the Game Corner too... And then there's that big department store! I've always wanted to shop there at least once... I bet they have awesome things in that store, don't they Vinny? Well, of course they do because then it wouldn't be famous if they didn't."
"It's not that great, really. It's just a big store. Game Corner is smelly with a bunch of overweight drunk guys and women that smoke too much. The Radio Tower is kind of cool I guess, but I never owned a reliable radio to get a good reception," Vincent said bitterly. He was willing to bet that Goldenrod would be a whole lot nicer if you had money. Lots of it.
"Well, I guess that's normal. I heard some sayin' like the grass is always greener on the other side of the oak tree... or somethin' like that. I mean, I guess to some Cherrygrove probably seems like a nice getaway spot, but for the people that live there, it's probably borin' as all get out..."
"Cherrygrove seemed pretty boring for all ten minutes I was there," Vincent replied. "But at least it was quiet. I like... the quiet sometimes."
"Oh, don't get me wrong. It can be totally awesome sometimes!" Melody said quickly. She glanced down at Blossom who was still rather snug and comfortably located in the girls arms. "It's just I guess when you live there and deal with it all the time it gets a bit... well... annoyin'."
Vincent sadly was forced to agree with her: "Yeah, well. I guess we cant' live in our respective hometowns then."
Melody nodded and was about to respond, when something up ahead caught the girl's eye. She sprinted a few steps ahead, reading the sign with a rather excited look in her eyes. Quickly, the girl spun around and dashed back towards Vincent.
"Vinny! Vinny!" Melody called out. She pointed back towards the sign, grinning up at the boy in the process. "Look! The Ruins of Alph are just a bit further ahead! We totally have to go check it out, right?!"
"What for?" he quickly asked. "They are just ruins. Nothing important there."
"I read about them in school before, though!" Melody retorted. "There supposed to be related to Pokémon and super cool! Plus, they are on the way to Azalea! So it's not like it would be waaaaay out of the way..."
"Aaaand?" Vincent continued to ask. "It's a bunch of rocks with pictures on it isn't it? Just because it's related to Pokemon doesn't mean it's worth it..."
Melody huffed a bit. "But there could be somethin' super excitin' there too! Come on, Vinny... Please?"
He sighed. "Fine. Lead the way."
"Thanks, Vinny! You won't be sorry, I promise!" Melody exclaimed, doing just that.
Blaine - An artist among us?
"Well, let's see." Blaine flipped out his pokedex and looked through his new mon's moves. "Not bad… bug types are great against… psychic, dark, and grass types." Blaine looked down at Derpy who was happily hopping about at the recent events. To the casual observer they might consider the recent capture a source of joy for the Totodile and believe that he was happy at getting another playmate, but of course Blaine knew better. On the one hand he could easily tell someone else what Derpy really was like… on the other he didn't want to wake up with an arm missing.
He pocketed his new mon as he turned to see Derpy was now rolling about in the dirt, gurgling wildly as he let his tail wag behind him only to kick up more dirt that ended up coating the Totodile. Blaine had to really wonder what went through that water-type's head, but his meditative state was broken when he heard a angry shout. Three Smeargle ran past Blaine and the over hyperactive Totodile just as a security charged on past as well, "Cease and desist!" The guard cried out as he turned another corner, intent on catching those Smeargle.
Feeling a bit perplexed Blaine walked over from where the officer and the mon had come from and shook his head at the sight. One of the ruins had paint smeared all over it. Blue, green, and yellow covered a wall and various sketches had been drawn out for all viewers to enjoy. He could see a crude figure of a human as well as other figures he took to represent the smeargle. Derpy gurgled a bit and waddled on up, taking in a deep breath and blasting out a water gun at the wall. Thanks to paint sill being fresh it was easily washed off and Blaine glanced down at the water-type.
"Oh, well thank you for that!" A voice called out as a woman dressed in a tourist guide's garb came walking on over, "Those Smeargle… they do this every week." She said with a tsk in her voice.
"Well, where's security then?" Blaine couldn't help but ask. "Kind of late to the party on this one already weren't they?"
She sighed, "Those Smeargle find all sorts of ways to get on the ruins. Last week we had to use ladders to get on top and get rid of the bullseye they drew up there. Well I see you're a trainer and we don't get many of your kind here. Most just pass us by to get to the next city, so how about this? If you can find those Smeargle and bat them, do you think you can discourage them from painting over the ruins again? I really have nothing to offer other than a free tour of the ruins really in such a case, but it would help us out so much."
Blaine thought about it, but it was Derpy that ultimately decided for him, jumping up and down and eagerly nodding his large head up and down. Blaine had to sigh, "I guess that's what we'll do then. Any clues as to where they usually hang out?"
She shrugged, "They tend to hide outside of the ruins, and every so often they'll just leap out, smear paint on a wall, and run away. They always outrun us, but with some mon on your side it shouldn't be a problem, especially this one here." She said as she smiled at the adorable Totodile.
Blaine nodded and began to walk away, "Alright, I'll see what I can find."
Blaine pulled out his pokedex and decided to find Smeargle's entry. It seemed that Smeargle would paint out the boundaries of their territory. If that was the case then he would have to find other similar paintings. If he could figure out the boundaries of their territory then he could pinpoint where the painters were located and be able to finally stop their graffiti spree. He moved along, seeing a few more painted walls here and there made by the fleeing Smeargles.
As they turned another corner Blaine stopped as he saw the Smeargles standing about, laughing at the clearly exhausted guard as some of the others continued to smear paint along a near by walls. They group was cheerful enough, but when the Water Gun from Derpy hit one with a red tail all of the laughter quickly ceased. Every eye turned to look at the Water type who gurgled angrily and then pointed a rather obscene gesture at the group. THAT made the Smeargle's angry as the three remaining ones grabbed hold of their tails, watching the Totodile warily.
Seeing the odds against them Baline pulled out another pokeball and threw out his Bellsprout. "Alright, Derpy use Aqua Jet on the green tailed one! Bellsprout follow up with a Vine Whip on the same one!"
Derpy gurgled as he was covered with water and slammed right into the Smeargle while Bellsprout cried out and sent a vine to slam into his head right after. The Smeargle cried out and staggered back before falling to the ground, completely out of it. The other two Smeargle however had different ideas. The yellow tailed on pointed his tail at the Bellsprout while the blue tailed one pointed his at Derpy. Suddenly both of Blaine's mon glowed as the Smeargles smirked. With that the blue one's body was covered in water as he flew out and slammed into Derpy. The yellow tailed one likewise had a vine suddenly grow out of his hand that he used to whip at the Totodile.
Blaine quickly whipped out his Pokedex and frowned, "Sketch eh? Derpy, go after the yellow tailed one! You too Bellsprout! Same moves as before!"
Derpy gurgled and raced on, but this time the Smeargle sent out a wine to bash the Totodile on his head and cause him to veer off course. He ended up slamming into the ground but the Bellsprout's attack made it through and hit the Smeargle. In turn the other Smeargle once more coated himself in water and dashed forth, hitting into Bellsprout. Derpy was quick to rise and gurgled out angrily. His body glowed a deep red as he ran forth and slammed his fist into the Smeargle. The normal type staggered back, using another Vine Whip to hit into the Totodile, but that wasn't enough to force Derpy to give up as he snarled and punched the Smeargle right in his throat.
The painter gripped his windpipe as he gasped frantically, but not before Derpy turned and let his thick tail slam into his side. The yellow tipped one fell to his side and gripped his side in pain, coughing and sputtering as an enraged Totodile stood above him. Derpy snarled as he began to kick at the Smeargle with no mercy in his eyes. The other Smeargle and Bellsprout stared on, a bit fearful as Derpy had his way. Finally he paused and glared over at the remaining Smeargle.
The blue tip one paled and wasted no time in raising his hands into the air, a clear look of surrender on his face. Derpy casually strolled up to him and placed a paw on his shoulder, jabbering as the Smeargle squirmed a bit. Finally after Derpy was done the normal type gave a sort of weak nod, looking a bit fearful as Derpy imitated throwing something. Blaine grabbed a ball off of his belt and looked at the Smeargle. Figuring it was better than nothing he tossed the ball at the mon, sucking him in and letting the ball shake a bit before it ceased wobbling.
Blaine picked it on up as Derpy gave yet another happy dance, pulling Bellsprout in as the plant could only sigh. "Well, that solves that." He looked down at the defeated Smeargles and rubbed the back of his head, "Hopefully no one sees this as assault."
Aberdeen Montany
post 5 chapter 3 : Violet City
That was the first night in a long time that Aberdeen slept early. When he woke up, his Pokémon were already awake, looking at him with hungry eyes from the edge of his bed. After getting ready, Whismur following him around wherever he went in the room and Pidgey occasionally landing on his head to give a quick peck when she thought he had been standing still for too long, they finally exited the Pokémon center and found a café where Pokémon were allowed. Ab served them with some Pokémon food in bowls borrowed from the café, and got himself a fat breakfast with the last of the money he had gotten from the siblings on Route 30. Hm, he'd better win some battles and earn money soon or this would turn into a difficult journey. Falkner probably gave a lot of prize money.
If the challenger won, that was. Ab didn't know if he could really win a gym battle. But he would try.
When they felt done, they marched right up to the Violet City Pokémon gym and found that it had just opened up. He was the first challenger of the day, so he didn't have to stand in line. However, Falkner had not arrived yet, so he bitterly had to wait anyways.
When the receptionist didn't look, Aberdeen sneaked through the doors to the main arena. It was rather magnificent, nothing like the simple arenas or lawns of the Academy. There were spectator seats all around the big arena and two platform looking things on each end of the battlefield. Did that mean that the trainer had to stand there instead of running around close to the battle? Aberdeen preferred the latter, so that his Pokémon could hear his orders well but not his opponent. Maybe things worked differently in these very official battles though. He would surely find out.
Suddenly, the doors opened again behind him and a surprised girl came in. Her head was as blonde as they came and she was wearing sporty clothes.
"Hey! Who are you?"
"I'm Aberdeen," he answered truthfully.
"But why are you here? Challengers aren't allowed in unless Falkner's with them."
"What are you doing here, then?" Aberdeen countered.
"I'm not a challenger, stupid. I'm a gym trainer."
"Gym trainer?"
"Yeah, I work here, helping Falkner with his birds and maintaining the gym and handling challenger queues and stuff. Like the receptionist only cooler!"
"Ah, that does sound cool."
"Best part is the payment. Not much in ways of money, but I get to train with Falkner himself and learn his secrets!"
"So you're almost as good as him?"
"Almost! One day I'll be even better." She suddenly eyed him curiously. "Say… You want a quick battle to test your skills?"
"Oh, I think I'd rather just wait for Falkner. You know, don't want to tire out too early!" Aberdeen laughed nervously.
"But if you can't beat me, there's no way you can beat Falkner. Don't you want to test your strength?" She walked closer and closer to Ab, finally stopping only a meter away.
"Uh… I guess… I could always heal my guys afterwards…"
"Yes! Great. Take your spot at the podium," the girl said with a smile before she ran across the battlefield to the other platform thingy on the ground.
"Do I have to?" he called after her.
"Why wouldn't you want to?"
"Okay…" He gave in and moved onto the platform. There was a fence around him and two buttons on the side facing the battlefield. Up and down, they said. He pressed the up one and felt the ground move.
The podium really was a podium! The platform rose as long as he kept the button pressed. When it stopped, he was several meters up in the air.
"I'm supposed to fight from here?" he called to the girl across the scene.
"It's better for flying trainers!" the girl smiled. "By the way, my name's Joan!"
"Aberdeen Montany..." Ab replied weakly. Okay. He only had Pidgey as a flying pokémon. He'd have to fight with her, then. Because otherwise he was unsure of if his pokémon down on the ground would hear his orders unless he screamed them.
"Let's do NO POTIONS rules, and use three pokémon each!"
"Can't we go with just one pokémon?"
"Don't tell me you only have one!"
"I have three..."
"Three it is, then!" Joan said with a grin. "Let's begin."
"Shouldn't we have a referee?"
"JUST BATTLE!"
Aberdeen nodded, almost afraid of asking further questions, and tossed Pidgey's pokéball up into the air. It opened up and Pidgey immediately took flight while the ball fell back into Ab's hands.
"Cute," Joan commented. "Go, Spearow!"
Aberdeen hadn't seen one of those in a while; they didn't live naturally around Cherrygrove, unlike Pidgey.
"You ready, girl?" he asked Pidgey, who was close enough to hear him when he spoke in normal tone. She chirped in reply and flew up higher.
"HEY!" a voice suddenly came from below. A man had walked in on the battlefield and was now staring up at Joan, hands on his hips.
"Oops," Joan said, backing slightly.
"Who's that?" Ab asked.
"I'm Falkner," the dark haired man on the ground said and turned to him. His face was pale but strong, somehow. Noble and fine, but determined. A smile suddenly showed on it. "And you are Aberdeen Montany."
"You heard that, eh?" Aberdeen said with a nervous smile. "I was just gonna-"
"Joan," Falkner interrupted and turned back to the girl who was currently moving her podium down again, blushing. "No challenger battles without my consent."
"Sorry Falkner... I just wanted to-"
"It's okay. But this time, I want to deal with the challenger first."
Aberdeen had moved his podium back down to ground level as well, and looked up at Falkner's new words. "You're going to battle me? Now?"
"If you want to," Falkner said.
Aberdeen cracked up into a genuinely eager smile. Pidgey chirped and sat down on his shoulder.
"That's a fine bird you have there. You two seem like a good pair," Falkner commented.
"We do alright," Ab said and petted the bird quickly on the head.
"We'll see just how alright. If you would please step back up onto the podium? Joan, you'll be our referee as a punishment!" Falkner called out and walked to the podium the girl had previously been on.
"Oh, that's no trouble!" Joan said, shining up. Apparently being the referee was more fun than it was punishment. Falkner seemed like a pretty likeable leader.
Aberdeen stepped onto the white, metallic podium again and held his finger on the "up" button. But then he hesitated. He hadn't cared much about winning battles until Donald showed him a valuable lesson. He didn't always care much for traditional ways of doing things. What if he tried to go his own way? Not just in Johto, but as a trainer. In battles. Unpredictable, he could try to be. Considering how inexperienced he still was, maybe that was the only way he could win against Falkner. By being a bit weird.
"Actually, I think I'll stay on the ground," he therefore said and took his finger off the button.
"Your choice. But you won't have as good an overview of the battle as I will," Falkner said, one eyebrow raised. "Especially considering my pokémon will all be in the air most of the time."
"That's okay," Aberdeen said and put Pidgey back inside her pokéball. "I'll be mostly on the ground."
Joan, standing on the sideline, shook her head, but Falkner smiled in amusement. "Interesting. Very well. Let's begin. Three pokémon each, switching out allowed, NO POTIONS rules!"
His first pokémon was a white and blue creature which the pokédex told Ab was called Wingull. Water/Flying type. Ab thought hard. Chespin wouldn't do very well against any of these, but he might have to use him eventually anyways unless he could somehow win with only two pokémon. Not likely against a gym leader. He'd have to be creative.
Whismur became Ab's first pokémon now. Wingull soared above and Ab did what he could to make Whismur stay calm and believe in himself. The boy stayed pretty close to the pokémon, closer that would probably be advised in a serious battle. But Ab wanted to keep his strategy. Up and close. Mumbled commands, understanding the situation. Maybe it would turn out a catastrophe, maybe it would work. Only one way to find out.
"Wingull, Wing Attack!" Falkner commanded.
Wingull spiraled and dove with sharp, gleaming wings at Ab and Whismur on the ground.
"Dodge left," Aberdeen said. As Whismur tossed himself aside, so did Aberdeen. Not that he would have been struck otherwise, but he wanted to feel what Whismur felt. Wingull flew past them, just barely, and rose again.
Having dodged left Whismur open for a subsequent attack though. "Try from a distance instead. Water gun!" Falkner called out.
Wingull halted its ascension and blew out a ray of water that hit Whismur pretty easily, pushing him back. Aberdeen felt splashes from the strike hit him a few meters away.
"Clear your face and do Uproar!" Ab said as soon as the beam of water subsided and Wingull started flapping to not fall too close to the pair on the ground.
Whismur caught it in his terrible soundwaves before it could ascend too high though. As usual, Ab had his ears covered, and Joan and Falkner soon had to do the same to endure. Wingull wasn't so lucky, its flapping disturbed by the pain it felt from the noises the hopping bunny did. Just as Whismur had to stop for a big breath, Wingull touched down onto the ground, having to recompose itself.
"Now, Pound!" Aberdeen shouted and ran alongside Whismur, closer to the bird.
"Use Wing Attack to fend it off!" Falkner shouted.
The hard pounds that were dealt in multiple from the bunny were all more or less countered by sharp wings flung out by the bird. But, as usual when two attacks in a row were commanded, that left Wingull open for another attack as it had to recover.
But then, Aberdeen suddenly returned Whismur to his pokéball with a content grin.
"What?" Joan couldn't help asking from the sidelines. Falkner just looked curious.
"Your turn, Pidgey!" Ab said and let his birdgirl out again. She flew up just as Wingull managed to take off from the ground again as well.
"Was that strategy? You almost had it," Falkner called down to the battlefield.
Aberdeen just laughed. Weird was the deal. "Tackle!"
Pidgey flew quickly and hit Wingull pretty easily and straight on. However, it recovered fast enough to aim a Water Gun that hit Pidgey in the air, almost throwing her to the ground.
But on the ground was Aberdeen. He ran to catch his pokémon in his arms, instead of her hitting the ground. When he had made sure that she was fine and not shocked by the water or anything, he realized that this might not be allowed. He hastily looked up at the gym leader on the podium. But Falkner only smiled. Maybe, if a trainer was reckless enough to not stand aside when pokémon were exchanging dangerous attacks, it was okay to help in the battle with your own body. Aberdeen smiled when he had decided that his rescue was justified. He wasn't afraid of getting a bit roughed up.
Better than living a secure life and never experience anything before you die. He swallowed, remembering his sister fleetingly. He wasn't doing this for her. He was doing it for himself.
He boosted Pidgey up into the air again, where Wingull came in for a Wing Attack. Ab made Pidgey blow a gust straight in the path of Wingull, which slowed the attacker enough that Pidgey could rather easily dodge the move.
But then, Falkner called out for a Supersonic. Much more subtle soundwaves than the Uproar's ones came towards Pidgey and made her flap frenetically.
"Your pokémon is confused," Falkner called down.
"I can fix that," Ab said and suddenly returned his second pokémon to her pokéball. "If she rests in here for a while, I'm sure she'll come out less confused later."
"Why do you keep changing pokémon!" Joan couldn't help but groan from the side of the arena. When Ab glanced her way, he noticed that some more gym trainers, dressed much like Joan, had entered and settled themselves on the spectator benches.
Again, Aberdeen only smiled before he sent out his last pokémon. Chespin.
"What do you hope to achieve?" Falkner asked, as Wingull flapped its wings to show that it still wasn't worn out.
"I just wanted everyone to get a chance to battle Wingull," Aberdeen shrugged. "Soundwaves, Water guns, Wing attacks... Pretty great array of moves! Good practice."
"True," Falkner said, still amused. "Let's continue then. I will try to take your little grass friend down in one blow. Think you can avoid that?"
Ab and Chespin shared a look and smiled back at Falkner together, Ab standing only a meter away from Chespin on the battlefield now. "Think so," he said.
Wingull didn't waste time on Water Guns or Supersonics. It dove immediately, sharpening her gleaming wings for a Wing Attack.
"Rollout!" Aberdeen shouted, and Chespin tucked itself in as a ball and started rolling away from the attacker. But the bird came in quickly and hit the ball hard enough to boost its rolling greatly.
Wingull soared upwards again and Falkner nodded. "Curling up might have increased its defense a bit. Two moves it is."
"You sure?" Aberdeen grinned, running beside his pokémon but quickly losing as Chespin was much faster all of a sudden. "I've been reading up on the movesets of my pokémon. Rollout gets exponentially stronger the faster the pokémon is rolling. Thanks for the boost, Wingull! Chespin, bounce against Falkner's podium and attack!"
Falkner gasped. The fast-spinning ball that was Chespin hit his podium, almost making it rock from the impact, and bounced up into the air where Wingull, not the speediest bird in the world, had been lingering. The attack was just fast and well aimed enough to strike the bird before it could dodge the projectile shooting up at it. Rock attack against Flying pokémon meant that when the two pokémon came back down to earth, Chespin landed not very gracefully but at least unscathed, while Wingull had already fainted on the way down.
"WINGULL HAS LOST THE WILL TO FIGHT! CHESPIN WINS! 3-2 to Aberdeen Montany!" Joan boomed from the side, astonished, and a few claps from the audience were heard as well.
"That's... That's just too lucky," Falkner stuttered.
"Maybe," Aberdeen said and bent down to pet Chespin on the head while Wingull got sucked inside its pokéball. "Really, your aim is either incredible when you're rolling around, or you were in sick luck there," he told his pokémon, who just winked happily at his trainer.
"But the match isn't over," Falkner said, straightening up. "I have two pokémon left."
His next pokémon was Murkrow. A black Dark/Flying type that looked like it could have a few tricks up its own sleeve. It mainly played a lot on Chespin's gullibility. First, it used Astonish to scare the grass pokémon. Chespin was too phased to retaliate before Murkrow came in with a Feint Attack that hit Chespin hard and made Aberdeen consider bringing him back. But then he remembered one of Chespin's least used attacks. As Murkrow flew back upwards, Aberdeen came in close and whispered the order to Chespin, who smiled and silently activated a dormant power within him.
"Still not going to retaliate? Fine," Falkner said pompously. "Murkrow, finish this little resilent rodent with Peck!"
Murkrow dove, glimmering beak ready to make Chespin faint, but Aberdeen gave another order that wasn't heard up to Falkner, before he jumped aside to avoid getting caught in the crossfire himself. In the nick of time, Chespin jumped forward and countered with a Tackle. The pokémon met, Murkrow's beak hitting the tough, protected back of Chespin's body. Of course it hurt the grass type some, but Murkrow wasn't completely unscathed either. Both pokémon were thrown back a bit, one staggering and the other one fluttering to gain altitude again. Not soon enough.
"Bind it with Vine Whip!" Aberdeen said, and Chespin's vines reached Murkrow's feet and pulled them so that the bird fell to the ground.
"The pokémon should have fainted from that!" Joan called out from the sideline.
"You are supposed to be an objective referee," Falkner reminded her, and she blushed anew. "But that Chespin did something... Aberdeen did something. Didn't you?"
"Synthesis!" Aberdeen beamed. "Nifty move! Can't believe I never used it before. It's like cheating! At least when you can't use potions. Right, Chespin?"
But Chespin didn't reply cheerfully; Murkrow was starting to peck on his vines and forced him to let go.
"Time for a change again," Aberdeen figured and held out Chespin's pokéball to retreat him. As the rodent dematerialized, Falkner's face got a curious look again. A different look, as if he had suddenly thought of something. Aberdeen wasn't sure he liked it.
Pidgey was sent out and quickly ordered to perform a Sand Attack. Murkrow fell victim and tried to Astonish Pidgey by jumping out from the sand cloud. Pidgey would have none of that though; she wasn't at all as gullible as Chespin. Instead, she Tackled Murkrow hard, so that it fell to the ground. It looked as if it was about to give up, where it was dragging its wings along the ground, so Aberdeen and Pidgey dared to get closer to aim a second Tackle better... But that was when a dark power suddenly struck up and overwhelmed Pidgey, making her fall to the ground instead. Murkrow flew up, still vigorous.
"Ah, Feint Attack again!" Aberdeen sighed. "Didn't see it coming that way."
"That's the point," Falkner called out with a proud smile. "Murkrow-"
"Pidgey, return!"
"Again? Are you serious?" Joan groaned, a few in the crowd behind her laughing at her strong reaction.
"Joan, objective," Falkner reminded her, and she clasped her hands over her mouth in embarrassment. But the gym leader had the dangerous smile going on again. "Murkrow, Pursuit!"
As Pidgey started to dematerialize from the ray of the pokéball in Ab's hand, another dark force shot out from Murkrow in the air and struck her right before she disappeared. Aberdeen gasped and quickly checked the pokéball with his pokédex. "She took a lot of damage! But she was switching out!"
"You need to know about attacks that your pokémon can't learn as well as their own," Falkner said, arms crossed. "Pursuit is a very sneaky move, used by dark types to punish pokémon that run from battle. Works when they are sent inside pokéballs as well."
Aberdeen breathed harder. After that attack, Pidgey was really weak. Chespin was fresh though, having healed up almost fully from the Synthesis. And there was still Whismur, only having been struck by a Water Gun and countered some slaps from Wing Attack. Whismur could go on!
He sent out his bunny pokémon, who actually looked less nervous now than he had done at the start of the battle. Ab smiled. His little noisy buddy was just a little slow in the start.
"This is MY sneaky move," he said. "Uproar!"
Turns out Murkrow was pretty tired after all, because it couldn't reach Whismur to Peck him before it gave in to the pain of its eardrums and fainted on the ground mere inches away from Aberdeen.
"Wohoo!" Ab cheered, and he got the crowd of gym trainers behind Joan to cheer with him. Joan smiled as well, impressed, again forgetting that she was supposed to be objective and all.
"So you have beaten two of the gym leader's pokémon," Falkner commented calmly as he withdrew Murkrow, "and I have yet to beat a single one of yours."
That was actually pretty odd, Aberdeen agreed. Was it cheating, to switch pokémon in and out this much? No, there were no rules against it, as long as you didn't retreat a pokémon to protect it from an attack of some kind. That was pretty much forfeiting. Switching in between attacks though... That was just strategy. Aberdeen's strategy.
"That will change now. Here is one of my oldest and most trusted pokémon," the gym leader declared and sent his third and final champion out. "Panachia!"
It was a Pidgeotto. Aberdeen was properly impressed; that was the evolved form of Pidgey. If he trained his own bird enough, she might evolve into Pidgeotto one day. He noticed also that Falkner had nicknamed his.
Aberdeen chose to keep Whismur in battle. But he quickly understood that Falkner had been saving this pokémon for last for a reason. Whismur started its famous Uproar, but the Pidgeotto called Panachia withstood it for long enough to blow up a Gust that threw Whismur off balance and forced him to stop roaring. As he got up and tried to start a new Uproar, since it seemed like a pretty hopeless endeavor to try and assault a highflying bird with Pound, Panachia swooped down all too quickly. She hit him with a Quick Attack that made the bunny finally faint and land almost on top of Aberdeen's shoes.
Ab picked up his little monster buddy in his arms and stroke his cheek carefully until Whismur's eyes opened again. With a proud smile, Ab returned his pokémon to its pokéball. Time to fight airstrike to airstrike.
Pidgey came out and immediately launched a Sand Attack at her bigger opponent. Panachia knew that strategy too well though, and blew it away with a Gust. Meanwhile, Pidgey had gained altitude though, and now shot down and hit Panachia with a Tackle from above. Falkner applauded the effort, but the Pidgeotto shortly after caught up with Pidgey from behind and struck her with a Quick Attack, before it whipped up a Sand Attack of her own. Pidgey tried to fight it off with her own Gust, but the Pidgeotto had already imitated the strategy from earlier and suddenly came from above with a Tackle too. And this was a relentless one; Panachia didn't stop until Pidgey touched the ground and stopped flapping. She had fainted too.
Aberdeen was beginning to sweat, he realized, as he sent Pidgey back into her pokéball rather than moving to pick her up manually. He didn't want to get too close to the bigger, imposing bird that sent stares at him from the middle of the battlefield.
His bird and his bunny were down. This meant he had to fight this strong, far too speedy bird with his rodent. Flying versus Grass. Not very awesome odds. But the point of all this was trying to win, he reminded himself as he stood in the dust from all the Sand Attacks, feeling Falkner's gaze from above, hearing the cheer from the trainers behind him and thinking back on the lessons in the Academy. Not the lectures. But Donald.
He would lose some money if he didn't win here, but he would get the experience from trying to win all the same. Feeling strangely relieved with realizing this, Aberdeen smiled calmly again.
"Let's finish this!" he said and sent out his starter. Chespin popped onto the battlefield and met the stare of the bird fiercely.
"Indeed," Falkner said. "Panachia, Gust!"
Aberdeen thought of a counter quickly. "Use Vine Whip to hold on to me!" he said to his pokémon, who trusted his plan without thinking twice. The Vine Whips snared themselves around Aberdeen's arms just as the wind struck. Ab had to bend down and struggle to stay on the ground himself; the Gust of a bigger bird was harder than one from a Pidgey! But he managed.
"Now, propel yourself upwards as soon as Pidgeotto comes closer," Ab said, turned to Chespin so that Falkner wouldn't see or hear his order. Chespin only hesitated a second now, maybe seeing Ab's plan after all.
"Quick Attack!" Falkner ordered. Aberdeen had been hoping for a Tackle, since it was somewhat slower, but they would have to try with the Quick Attack then.
Panachia came in low and Ab helped swinging up Chespin with the vines in the nick of time. The Quick Attack missed and when Chespin retracted his vines, he was still on his way upwards.
"That only made you more vulnerable," Falkner said with a raised eyebrow. "Tackle!"
"Pity you aren't like your pokémon, learning from past strategies," Aberdeen grinned below and suddenly ran to the podium while he spoke and pressed the 'up' button. "Rollout!"
Chespin curled up right before the Tackle struck and sent him spinning incredibly fast up towards the roof.
"You can't aim in the air though!" Falkner practically shouted, Pidgeotto stopping to hover in the air when she heard the confusion in his master's tone.
"Can't we?" Aberdeen said, now on the raised podium closer to the roof. They book looked up and saw that Chespin had hit a wooden beam that ran along the ceiling. The barbs on his head and back had hardened as he rolled up and in the powerful ramming, they had been jammed into the wood. As he unrolled himself now though, the barbs softened. With the Vine Whip, Chespin clung to the wooden beam and didn't fall back down though. With his dorky, toothy smile, the pokémon positioned himself on a ledge and stuck out his tongue towards Pidgeotto below.
The trainers on the spectator benches cheered and Falkner actually couldn't help but laughing now. "That's just... I've never seen this. Your battle style..."
"Falkner," Aberdeen called from the other podium suddenly. "I don't think I can win, actually."
Falkner looked back at him and was surprised to see the boy smile at this.
"I have a grass pokémon and you have a really strong bird pokémon. It's kind of futile, really."
"Pity, I was having fun," Falkner said and smiled back.
"Oh, me too! That's why we won't quit yet!"
"You won't? But-"
"I said I don't think I can win. That doesn't mean I'll stop trying!"
"You are crazy!" Joan cried happily from the sideline, jumping up and down by now.
"Perfect," Falkner laughed. "Come on, then, make a move!"
"Chespin, use Vine Whip! Snap the bird!"
Chespin's vines shot down and tried to reach the bird, but Panachia used Quick Attack to avoid every flick of the narrow vines.
"Growl!" Ab shouted, and Chespin did his best to growl intimidatingly to lower the attack power from his enemy. The bird still came in for a Tackle that knocked Chespin off his pin and made him start falling down.
"Grab the bird!"
Chespin, as always, didn't think before he obeyed, and that was a good thing in this case because otherwise he wouldn't have had time to send out his vines and make them ensnare one of Pidgeotto's legs before the bird rushed by through the air. Pulling himself up, Chespin suddenly found himself seated on the back of Panachia, holding on for dear life with both hands, tail and vines.
The crowd literally screamed now and nobody could really sit still. Falkner laughed again, but Aberdeen was suddenly completely focused. He hadn't really seen the big picture. He never thought about the big picture. He knew that he was trying to win. And that this was fun. And also that right now, he had the opportunity to make a strong attack on the bird for the first time.
"BITE!"
Chespin bit down at the side of the neck of the bird just before Pidgeotto made a flick with its back to toss the rodent off. He became hanging, darkly powered teeth sunk into the bird's neck as it tried to whip up a Sand Attack around itself, close to the ground, to get rid of the attacker causing the pain.
Chespin did fall off when his eyes watered from the sand, and he instinctively curled up into the ball of Rollout and started rolling out from the dust cloud before the bird could reach him with another attack. Panachia wasn't used to getting direct hits, especially not from someone riding on her back, so she was furious now and stomped on the ground after the rolling ball, snapping with her beak. She jumped up into the air and whipped up a Gust just in time to make the air shield her from the Rollout that had turned around and been coming at her.
"How long is this going to last? Who's having the upper hand now?" a trainer among the spectators asked.
"Stop!" Falkner suddenly called out.
The crowd fell silent and the pokémon stopped moving after a few seconds. Aberdeen found that his breathing was all of a sudden the noisiest thing in the room.
"This battle is over."
"No it isn't!" Ab called out.
"Yes it is. I forfeit," Falkner said with the widest smile yet.
"You... You forfeit?" Joan said, jaw dropping.
"Gym leaders can do that?" Aberdeen asked, honestly surprised, as he followed Falkner's example and pressed the 'down' button on his podium fence until they were both on the ground and could walk up to their pokémon in the middle of the arena.
"The job of a gym leader is to assess if a trainer is worthy of owning a specific gym badge. I find that you are, very much, worthy," the gym leader said proudly. "At least you are crazy enough. So you will get the Zephyr badge. Not really for winning. But for trying really well."
Needless to say, it was difficult for Aberdeen to keep himself from spending all of the prize money on a fabulous lunch for him and his pokémon trio later. If this was how gym battles were, and if this was what he could look forward to as a pokémon trainer, then he would totally keep trying as hard as he could.
((OOC: finally omfg. Sorry if I didn't portray the gym like someone else established before my post. I'll be more careful to treat whatever the first poster depicts, as canon in the future. But honestly, when soloposting it doesn't matter overly much.))
Aberdeen
Chespin grew to lv 15 and forgets Growl for Leech Seed!
Pidgey grew to lv 14 and learned Quick Attack!
Whismur grew to lv 14 and learned Astonish and Howl!
Christina and Blaine – Ruins of Alph
Chapter 4: In the Nick of Time
Christina looked up at the dark clouds overhead with only a few white-ish grey ones in between. Every so often she heard the distant rumbling of thunder. She'd never been afraid of lightning, but Sindy wasn't doing as well. The little 'mon was curled up in her arms, shuddering slightly everytime the low rumble was heard.
The red-haired girl smiled and petted the Cyndaquil as the two were walking along the path through the fields and hills of sparse trees, coupled with a growing amount of rock outcroppings here and there. "It's alright Sindy, the lightning is still far away. With any luck, we'll find some shelter by the time it starts raining... if it does. I know you're scared, but sometimes you have to be brave even if you don't feel like it, you know?"
The Cyndaquil whimpered quietly, but wasn't curled up as much as she was before, letting out a little huff. Christina smiled and gave her another hug as they continued down the path. Despite the dark-grey clouds above, Chris was feeling rather cheerful. She was happy that Melody had beat Falkner and even though she herself had lost, she felt that she had taken something away from the battle and grown, if only a little bit. After her friend had left for the center to heal her Pokémon, Christina had promised Falkner that she would be back sometime, once she and Sindy were stronger.
She was suddenly snapped out of her thoughts as she almost bumped into a large sign right in front of her. She hadn't been looking around before, but now she noticed that around her, the trees had just stopped growing and everything looked a little more rocky and sandy, and a little off in the distance, there were one very new-looking building, and alot of older ones, made out of stone from the look of things.
Turning her attention back to the sign, she read it to herself. "Ruins of Alph. Entry only with a guide." Quirking a brow, she tilted her head slightly as she looked back over at the ruins and proceeded to smile, turning her gaze down to the Cyndaquil in her arms. "... Hey Sindy. Wanna go exploring?"
About ten minutes later, Chris peeked out from around the corner of one of the buildings, making sure there were no guards, guides or tourists around to ruin her and Sindy's fun. She had always been a huge fan of adventuring and exploring, and now she had a chance to genuinely do so, instead of just playing pretend back in Cherrygrove. She snuck out from behind the building and scurried over to the next, taking in the sight of the ornately-carved markings along the side of it, while Sindy hurriedly waddled up behind her, another rumble sounding above them.
"Wow, look at this Sindy... this must be hundreds of years old." Her hand raised up as she stroked it along the rough surface of the building curiously. She vaguely remembered her brother mentioning the ruins at one point, but she had tried to block him out, as she usually did. Sindy suddenly let out a warning squeak, causing Chris to turn around, her eyes widening as she dove to the side, just in time to avoid a small, round, red creature rolling right by and slamming into the wall.
"W-what the-" Christina began as she stumbled to her feet, Sindy hurrying in between her trainer and the foreign object. The red ball slowly unfolded, the thing in front of them seemingly having both legs, arms, a face and a pair of rather impressive eyebrows. Christina fished out her Pokédex and scanned the creature, revealing it to be a Darumaka. It looked like it was smiling, but something in the way it stared at Sindy and Christina made Christina sure that it was only out to hurt them.
"... Alright, I guess we'll take you on. And we'll see just how good the Quick Claw is! Sindy, tackle it!" She had barely uttered the words before Sindy dashed forwards. Chris' eyes widened as the little Cyndaquil shot forwards as if fired from a cannon, the Darumaka clearly surprised as well as Sindy slammed square into its chest, causing it to roll backwards with a wince. "Whoa. That Quick Claw is really gonna come in handy."
The Darumaka growled and hopped to its feet again, narrowing its eyes while its chest expanded. "Sindy, watch out! Dodge to the side!" Chris called out, as the Darumaka spewed out a torrent of flames. Sindy was quicker though, rolling sideways with the same speed as when she attacked, leaving the ground she stood on a moment ago scorched. Chris smiled at the clear increase in Sindy's speed and power, pointing a finger at the Darumaka.
"Great job! Now let's take it out! Quick Attack!" Sindy lowered herself down, arching her back while growling quietly, her squinted eyes focused squarely on the Darumaka who, this time, seemed ready for Sindy's speedy attack. However, the Quick Claw, combined with a Quick Attack sent Sindy darting off to the side in the blink of an eye and the Darumaka whipped around to face its foe, but as it was turning, Sindy had stopped dashing to the side and was alright right in front of the new enemy. Barely able to lift its hands in defense, Sindy slammed into the fire 'mon and sent it almost flying into the wall of the building, where it toppled over with a weak grunt.
Christina smiled brightly and ran over to pat Sindy. "Nice! Awh man Sindy, you're a beast! I can't wait to get to the next gym and show them how strong you're already becoming." She grinned and stood up again, about to turn and continue their tour of the ruins, but as she rose up, she heard a growl, her eyes widening a little as she turned, seeing another three Darumakas having surrounded the two up against the wall. Christina bit her lower lip and backed a little up, Sindy taking up a battlestance with the patches on her back flaring up, growling protectively while standing in front of Christina. "... Uh-oh. I hope you're ready for a challenge Sindy..."
As one of the Darumaka began to approach the Cyndaquil a ball of water shot out of left field and slammed into it's head, causing it to fall forward. Right behind the group was Blaine and a jumping Totodile who gave a wave to the other trainer and her mon. The Totodile began to jabber wildly to the Darumakas, but whatever he was saying was getting them quickly enraged as this group split up. Half were now heaidng over to Derpy with anger in their eyes.
Blaine called out, "Yo, half and half. We got this side."
Christina's eyes widened as the Darumaka toppled over, turning her head to look at the newly arrived trainer with his shiny Totodile in tow. A bright smile formed on her lips as she quickly waved at them both. "Blaine! Nice timing!"
Derpy jabbered a bit more as a toothy grin fromed over his face. His body was soon covered with water as he flew forth and slammed into one of the Darumaka, giggling... that was until one of the others punched him hard. The Totodile staggered on back and spun a bit, this time moving to let his teeth snap onto the Darumaka's body as he bit down.
One of the Darumakas were still focused on Sindy, but the sudden change in situation seemed to only make it angrier, visibly starting to huff and growl as it ran over and smacked the surprised Sindy with a fist, sending her staggering back with a squeak. "It's okay Sindy! Use a Smokescreen!" The Cindaquil squeaked and the patches on its back flared again, sending a billow of smoke out in a small area around them, covering her and the Darumaka in the fog. Unlike last time however, Christina smirked. She had given this tactic alot of thought.
"Alright Sindy, turn on your flames so I can see where you are!" From within the cloud of smoke, a small core of red and orange burned, revealing Sindy's position to Chris, causing her to smile brightly that her tactic had worked. "Perfect Sindy, now get it with a Tackle!"
Meanwhile the Darumaka struggled with Derpy as the Totodile drooled all over the red mon, finally releasing his jaws as he shot out a powerful Water Gun. The water not only harmed his opponent but had the additional effect of propelling the Totodile up and into the air. As he shot up the other Darumaka shot out some fire with an Incinerate attack. Fortunately with Derpy being a water type he wasn't affected that much and as he fell he sent out another Water Gun, more along to help slow his descent.
The Totodile gurgled again and spat out water at his foe, though the Darumaka was quick to sidestep and ran up, punching the Totodile in the face. Derpy opened his jaws and proceeded to bit the hand that had just pounded him. This of course gave the Darumaka the opportunity to punch him with his free hand.
"Derpy, Aqua Jet!" Blaine cried out and the Totodile obliged. His body was covered with water as he shot along the ground. With the Darumaka still held in his jaws the helpless mon was soon being dragged painfully along the ground until Derpy finally released his grip. The Darumaka rolled along and hit into a wall. Derpy gurgled as the water faded from his body and he did a little jig.
While Derpy was doing his little dance, a sudden, somewhat loud crackling 'snap' was heard, the Darumaka fighting with Christina and Sindy came flying past, crashing into one of its downed fellows. Christina smiled and walked over to pat Sindy softly. "Nice! You're learning to control that really well." With the enemies defeated, Christina stood up again and looked around the area, which looked more like a small battlefield than anything else. She looked to Blaine and smiled widely before runing over, throwing her arms around his back and giving him a squeeze. "Blaine! It's been so long, and it's so good to see you!"
He blinked and squirmed a bit, "Oh... uh yeah. The forest and all. Uh, best I can say is glad you didn't die back there."
Derpy of course ran up to Sindy and began to jabber wildly as he smiled all the while.
"Heh, you and me both." She backed away, smiling as she took a hold of the strap of her bag hanging over her shoulder to busy her hands. "I'm really happy you two came along and gave us a hand. What're you doing here though?"
If Sindy's eyes were open, she would have narrowed them as Derpy came running up to her. The patches on her back began glowing, but she didn't emit any flames. Instead she let out a couple of low squeaks, puffing out her chest a little and raising herself somewhat up from her otherwise semi-hunched over state, clearly not happy with the Totodile.
Blaine was about to speak when the female guide he had met earlier came up, "Oh, there you are!" She said cheerfully. "Well, we saw that you managed to beat that Smeargle gang, so thank you a lot for that. Though I did see one of them was rather beat up while the others weren't. It seems that after you beat them someone decided to have a bit of... extra vengence."
Blaine frowned, "Oh... uh... that's bad. I hope it's okay."
Derpy meanwhile smiled widely as he began to jabber about, jumping a bit and then finishing his comments with a simple shrug.
The guide smiled and patted the Totodile on the head, "Oh you are so cute! You really have a great mon here." She said to Blaine.
The Totodile turned his head and gave something of a sly wink to the Cyndauil. "Toto?"
Christina gave the Totodile an odd little glance, but looked up at the guide and frowned softly. "Who'd do something like that? Sounds awful." She shifted a little, hoping to just be able to pass off as someone Blaine had brought along, rather than being caught for tresspassing.
Meanwhile, Sindy got visibly worked up over what Derpy was apparently saying to her, the patches on her back flaring up with a fiery red orange flame as she squeaked and murmured out to the Totodile, seeming about ready to fight him.
Blaine had to shrug, "Not sure. I do know they were marking up the ruins so maybe it was some activist or something."
The Totodile just stared on at Sindy with that cheerful smile, "Toto to toto dile totodile!" He said happily.
"Sounds kinda odd if you ask me, but I guess we won't know. Uhm, anyway, you helped out with beating a bunch of Pokémon who were misbehaving, I'm guessing?"
Sindy growled out again, her little paws balling slightly up as she stared down the Totodile, the fire continuing to flare before slowly dying down, eventually letting out a snort in his direction and turning to waddle back to Christina's side.
Blaine nodded. "They were marking up the sites and I just had Derpy and Bellsprout knock them out. Even caught one of them and I got a free tour out of it."
Derpy just watched her leave, his smile widening just a bit more and he went back to Blaine. He set himself on his side as he began to roll about in the dirty in a cutesy way.
The guide nodded, "That's right. So essentially we can start the tour sometime soon. We'll be meeting right in front of those ruins over there." She said as she pointed off, "So meet up with the group there and we'll get started."
"You have a Bellsprout now? Cool!" Christina smiled, turning her attention to the guide and nodded her head as she turned around and headed back to the main, modern-looking building. "We will!" She waited until the woman was out of sight before turning to Blaine with a mischievous smile on her lips. "I'm... not really a fan of being led around by the nose. I kinda wanna look around on my own. You in?"
Blaine frowned, "Hm... well, I guess it can't hurt... But where would we start? I mean there are so many potential entrances here, and if we get caught it can't be good."
Chris turned, looking around the small area that looked something akin to a ye olde-times marketplace before pointing at a somewhat large building without a stone door, being one of the few buildings without one. "I think we should start over there. And if we get caught, we just say that we were seperated from the group!"
Blaine nodded slowly, "I see what you're saying. Alright, then lead the way."
"Right. Coming Sindy?" Chris smiled down at the Cyndaquil, who gave Derpy one last 'narrow-eyed' look before following Christina as she semi-hurried over to the entrance of the house, making sure not to be seen by anyone other than her companions. As she reached the building, she looked up at the large building with a smile. "Wow... it looks really impressive. What do you think it was, back in the day, Blaine? Some kind of temple or...?"
Blaine shrugged as Derpy ran on in, gurgling about. Blaine sighed and followed on in, "Well, might as well now. I can't let him just go off." He said. As he went about he saw various letters on the walls, but they looked odd, "Hm... Christina... do you know what these letters are?"
Chris snickered quietly as Derpy ran on ahead, her and Sindy following behind Blaine as they entered the large, rather barren room, save for the large statues standing here and there, as well as the carved letters on the walls. Chris stepped up to them and brushed a hand along the stony surface. "Well... I've heard about this place. Alot of people seem to think that this is written in an old, forgotten language, but nobody knows what it says."
Derpy rushed back and jabbered loudly as he latched onto his trainer's leg. Suffice to say, Blaine was used to this by now and began to head to where Derpy was pointing. Soon he got into a room where a large crystal statue stood. "Uh... Christina..." He called out, "Take a look at this..." He pulled out his own crystal and held it up for comparison. "Hm..."
"Hmmh?" Christina soon peeked in through the open doors into the smaller room, Sindy waddling on in to take a look round for herself. She noticed the crystal statue Blaine was standing next to, her eyes widening as she moved up besides him. "Ooooh wow, that looks... amazing, and very expensive." She squinted a little and leaned somewhat back. "... Is it a Pokémon? I can't tell." She then blinked a little in surprise as she felt something warm in the pocket of her shorts. Reaching inside of it, she pulled out the little crystal-bit from the other day, when she'd met Blaine and Melody. It was glowing a firm pinkish-purple, and the statue in front of them was starting to react. "Huh...?"
Blaine shrugged, "I think-" At that the crystal glowed and there was a shuddering underneath their feet. Blaine blinked and looked down, "Was that a-" He didn't finish as the floor suddenly shattered under them. Blaine, Christina, Sindy and Derpy fell down with a surprised yelp and both Blaine and Christina blacked out as they hit the ground below.
A quiet groan came from the red-haired girl as she felt something nudging at her arm and face. Slowly, she blinked her eyes open to the sight of a very worried Cyndaquil squeaking out quietly while nudging the arm draped across her face. Slowly, wincing, Christina sat up and rubbed the back of her head. "Nngh... ow. It feels like I was run over by a Stantler..."
Looking up, she immediately froze. She was no longer in the small, rather dark stone house, but rather in what looked like a long corridor, equally old-looking as the buildings they had been around a few minutes earlier with the same scriptures along the walls, but here, there were lit torches hanging along the walls, making sure they weren't totally in the dark. Thankfully, Sindy had also lent her help in the form of the patches on her back flaring up into a crackling flame. "Where the heck...?" She then noticed something, or rather some -one- was missing. "... Blaine? Blaine! Hey, where are you, Blaine?"
"Oh..." Blaine groaned as he got up shakily and he heard Chris, but it was muffled, "Chris... hey over here!" He banged the wall next to him, "Hey, you there!?" He cried out, "I hit my head."
Chris turned towards the wall where Blaine's muffled voice was coming from, walking up to it and pressing her ear against it for a moment before calling back. "Yeah, I'm here! I'm... alright, aside from a sore rear." she winced a little and rubbed her rump before getting back to the problem at hand. "I... think the crystals activated the statue and opened up a trap door. We must've landed on different sides of the wall. There has to be a way out somewhere, though..."
She paused, looking down at Sindy, who gave her a determined little nod before turning and waddling off down the corridor. "Uhm... alright, Blaine, look for an exit! I'll do the same, and the first one to find it'll try to find the other person and lead them out. Good luck!" With that, she turned and hurried down after Sindy, who had already begun the tricky journey out of the underground labyrinth of the Alph Ruins.
Aberdeen Montany
post 1 chapter 4 : Ruins Of Alph
It was afternoon when Aberdeen had traveled south and soon enough run into the Ruins of Alph. He wasn't the kind of guy to enjoy looking at things in museums and such, but he did still have a certain fascination of history... Mostly because it was often the base of great science fiction stories. Various historical events, gone differently, leading to alternate futures. That stuff was cool, according to Aberdeen. Plus, as he stood at the entrance to the ruins, he suddenly had a thought of his sister... She would have enjoyed this. Okay. For once, he'd do something for her and not for himself. He'd just look around the ruins for a while. If nothing else, then just to be able to say that he had been there, at the oldest buildings in Johto.
There were quite some people walking outside the biggest ruins. There was also a museum built near the entrance to the whole area, but as you had to pay admission to enter and Ab wasn't really keen in paying for something he didn't fancy, he stayed outside. He noted that a guided tour was about to start later, and thought he should probably join that. These ruins were much more interesting than a museum, he'd bet.
He strolled around one of the smaller ruins, not really thinking about whether he was allowed there or not. The sky was cloudy and the air somewhat thick and moist. A low rumbling in the distance told him a storm and perhaps some rain was probably coming soon. He hoped that the tour would start before that, so that he could get inside. At the same time, though... Thunderstorms were cool!
Just as he thought that, he looked up into the cloudy sky with a smile. When he looked back down again, his eyes widened and he tossed himself to the side in the nick of time. Something silvery shot past him and embedded itself with a cracking noise in the ancient stone wall behind. Aberdeen slowly stood up and regarded the projectile with amazement.
"A pokémon?"
He took up his pokédex and let it expect the creature that was now wiggling about, trying to get out from the wall. It looked like a sword; had its eyes been closed and its sheath on, Ab would easily have mistaken it for an inanimate object. But as it were, a blue bodypart looking like a textile banner fluttered from what would be the handle if the creature was a sword, and this banner was in turn wrapped firmly around a brown, ornamented sheath. Honedge, Steel/Ghost, the pokédex said.
'Apparently this Pokémon is born when a departed spirit inhabits a sword. If anyone dares to grab its hilt, it wraps a blue cloth around that person's arm and drains that person's life energy completely.'
"That is beyond creepy," Aberdeen commented with an impressed nod. "Say, you look like you need help getting out from there."
Honedge let out a metallic squeak that sounded pleasantly futuristic in Aberdeen's eyes, making him smile without noticing. Its eyes were angry and clearly frustrated.
"You did try to pierce me though, didn't you?"
No reply at that.
"I was probably intruding on your territory or something though, so maybe I can let that slide. But only because I was unharmed in the end. Because, well, you're stuck now. Am I right?"
A metallic, swirling noise came at him again, this time a bit louder and more brisk.
"Secondly, my pokédex says you're pretty much going to kill me with your ghost powers if I grab your hilt and pull you out. That's not really inviting."
Somehow, it looked like the sword was sighing. A rumbling thunder came from above. The storm was approaching already, after all.
"Huh, looks like it might rain soon. Or we'll get some thunder and lightning, at least. Hm, you look pretty exposed out here, a metal stick in the middle of a flat wall. Getting struck by the lightning probably isn't too pleasant."
The eye facing Aberdeen suddenly widened and blinked a few times, before it grew bitter. Honedge stopped wiggling. Could it be thinking hard, maybe?
Honedge clearly didn't like that Aberdeen was here, and she really wanted to get out from the wall. But accepting help from the only person in the vicinity would mean letting down her defenses, resisting the urge to devour the boy's soul if he touched her hilt. Or her banner, or blade, or sheath, or any part of her really. Even though she wasn't exactly in touch with her ghostly powers - yet - she wouldn't let him know that if it meant he had some respect for her. And she was thinking hard now.
Finally, the blue banner hung straight down, only loosely holding the sheath now. A low, but not hostile, whirr came from the sword as she blinked with sad eyes at Aberdeen.
"That means... You'll let me help you, right? Alright!"
He walked up to stand just behind the sword, and held his hands over her hilt.
"But just so you know, if you harm me, you'll have my army of monsters after you. They'll hunt your soul, whatever inanimate object it chooses to possess. We clear on that?"
The new whirr was a short, impatient one, coupled with another low thunder from not too faraway clouds up above.
His hands felt warm as they grasped her hilt. Human hands. It had been so many years since she last let someone hold her like that. She wasn't a sword, she was a pokémon. Long, long ago, this particular metal and sheath and banner might have looked a bit differently, but then she possessed it with her undying soul and transformed the pieces over time to look much like every other Honedge looked. She didn't even remember from where her soul had come before being inside this sword. She was this sword now. And the banner and the sheath. All her. And to let a human being, a little boy, hold her and swing her like an object was beneath her. Beneath any decent Honedge.
But now, she didn't really have any choice if she wanted to escape the oncoming storm. Aberdeen wasn't the strongest or most physical of boys, so he struggled for a moment before the metal finally plopped out from the hack in the stones, and they both fell backwards into the dust on the ground.
Ah, it felt good to not have ancient stones grinding her precious edge. Wait a minute. She tried to fly up into the air, as she usually did with her passive ghost levitation powers, but something held her back. The boy was still holding her hilt!
Aberdeen sat up and watched the Honedge grumble.
"You promised you wouldn't harm me," he said. "Um, at least I hoped you did."
Sure, she might have promised. But was she the kind of pokémon to keep her word? She wasn't sure of that, actually. Not many fellow pokémon, or people for that matter, around the ruins cared about keeping one's word. Mostly because words weren't really spoken very often. Honedge whirr, they don't speak. Unless they are telepathic, perhaps. This one wasn't.
She suddenly noticed that the boy was gazing at her in awe.
"You are so cool. No offense to my other pokémon, but you are the most beautiful pokémon I've seen. Wow. I'm not a sucker for fantasy and medieval stuff, but if I ever had a sword I'd totally want to have you."
He saw her as a sword. Well then, time to sap his life energy out of him. If she only really could.
"I mean, maybe not as a sword since you're a pokémon. But, I don't know. Like a magic partner perhaps?"
Hmm. Maybe she wouldn't drain him just yet. If she had been able to.
"By the way, you dropped this," Aberdeen suddenly said and handed the pokémon something with his other hand.
It was her sheath! She hadn't even noticed dropping it. That was insane! She never dropped her sheath, not even in the midst of battle. Honedge always kept track of their sheaths. But here, when a simple boy had grabbed her hilt and pulled her out from a wall in a brewing thunderstorm, she had dropped hers. Ugh, she really was a disgrace to her kind. Not very ghosty, dropping her sheath... And not even being able to defend her territory against a puny human.
She quickly snatched the sheath back from him with her blue banner, and put it on. The ornaments and holes in it made it look as if she had two extra eyes, closed, and a toothy, smiling mouth. Her blue eye blinked at Aberdeen beneath those; he was still holding her with the hilt down in his hand.
"All good?" he asked and got up from the ground.
Whirr, whirr.
"Great. Then..." He let go of her, and she remained levitating in the air. "Want to come on the guided tour with me?"
What?
"I mean, we get roof over our heads if we take the tour. Or so I suppose, since it's inside the ruins."
Did he think that she couldn't take care of herself?
"Besides, you seem to live here. But have you ever really examined and explored the ruins, eh? Maybe they'll show you something new!"
Honedge was so confused. Was he a trainer trying to capture her or was he trying to be friendly after getting the privilege of touching him without getting ripped to shreds?
"Come on, I think it'll start soon and I want to buy a snack first!" Ab called, already having started running back towards the museum. "Honedge!"
The sword looked at him, then turned back and looked at the crack in the wall that she had made. Then she looked back to the roofless ruins where she usually made her home. Not very cool for a Honedge. Other Honedge here had much better territories. She looked back at the boy who was running backwards with a dorky smile now, apparently believing that she would follow him.
Well okay then. She would follow him. Just because she wanted to, nothing else. He was not the boss of her.
Yet.
((OOC: it's a capture. Sort of. It will be. And I'm impatient, like everyone else, so I'll just add the swor- I mean Honedge, to the OP rn))
Christina Langley – Underground Alph Ruins
Chapter 4: An A-Maze-ing Run-in
The sound in the underground hall was rather eerie. It was oddly quiet, save for Christina and Sindy's quiet footsteps, and occasionally, distant… eerie sounds, that Christina just waved off as Blaine trying to find his way out as well. However, it just didn't sound… quite right, to her. She sighed quietly and looked down at the Cyndaquil waddling in front of her. "Do you think this is the right way, Sindy? We've passed a lot of turns, both left and right…"
The Cyndaquil squeaked out quietly and Chris knew that Sindy was probably as close to finding the exit as she herself was. Lifting a hand to brush her fingers through her hair, she glanced around. The visuals stayed the same all the time. The same, carved-out walls, the same lit torches, and an occasional carved pillar in the middle of the hallway to keep the ceiling supported.
The hallway came to a turn to the right and Christina simply followed Sindy as they both turned the corner, but quickly came to a stop as she noticed the hallway ended in a dead-end. She sighed deeply and crouched down, wrapping her arms around her legs, Sindy waddling up in front of her with a worried look on her face. Chris smiled and lowered her hand to pat the Cyndaquil softly. "It'll be alright Sindy. We'll find our way out. There's no reception down here either, so we can't call anyone for help, so… we just –have- to find out way out, you know?"
Sindy squeaked softly and nodded before suddenly perking up. She turned around, staring at the back wall for a while before scurrying over towards it. Chris raised her brows, got up and quickly followed her. "Hey Sindy, what's up? What'd you find?" She found Sindy standing in front of the wall, a small, black hole with a bit of rubble surrounding it in the wall. It seemed just big enough for something slightly larger than Sindy to be able to move through. "Wow, nice find! I wonder what's in there…"
She lowered herself down against the stone floor, peering into the complete darkness, unable to see anything. Frowning a little, she stood up again, rubbing her chin. Sindy seemed oddly curious about the hole in the wall. "Mrrh… it's not an exit, that's for sure. Sindy, do you wanna check it out, just to be safe?" The Cyndaquil looked up at Chris and nodded her head, followed by her trainer's smile. "Alright, go for it. But be careful, okay?"
She watched Sindy waddling into the hole, the flames on her back illuminating what seemed to be a tiny, roughly-carved hallway. A slight feeling of worry came over her, but she tried to push it away and calm herself down. She had to trust her friend and ally, otherwise, they'd just get a repeat of what happened versus Falkner. She began pacing a little back and forth when Sindy's illuminating fire disappeared into the darkness, busying herself with thinking of what Blaine was doing.
Just as she was about to call out to Sindy, she heard an echoing squeak, followed by small, running feet and… something sounded very angry. Her eyes widened as Sindy came running out of the hole, turning and skidding to a stop in front of Chris. "S-Sindy! What happened in there? What-"
Before she could ask any more questions, another creature exited the small hole. It was a blue thing walking on two legs, with tiny eyes and what looked to be some kind of oddly-shaped steel dome on the top of its head. The being growled out before jabbering angrily, waving its little arms about and glaring at Sindy, soon also at Christina. "A… Pokémon?" She pulled out her dex and aimed it at the creature, her eyes widening as she read the entry. "It's a Bagon. It wants to fly, has a hard-as-steel head and… is a dragon!"
Chris gaped and looked from the Pokédex, to the Bagon in front of them, still throwing quite the tantrum at Sindy entering the hole in the wall, while Sindy just squeaked out apologeticly, bowing her head to it. "My brother told me that dragons are the strongest type of Pokémon from the get-go…" She bit her lower lip before lowering herself down besides Sindy, smiling at the Bagon, who quickly shut up, turning its glaring eyes on Christina.
"Hey there. Uhm… I'm sorry Sindy went into your home. We didn't know that you were living in there." She smiled at the Bagon, who crossed its tiny arms over its chest and harrumphed, still glaring. "We're really just trying to get out of here. Do you know the way out? To up above?" She pointed a hand upwards, still smiling. The Bagon was unimpressed, but seemed to calm down a little. Christina could tell that it was still very angry at the intrusion, but it looked almost interested in finally seeming something else in the labyrinth down here. Slowly, it let out a huff and placed its small arms against its sides, growling out and making a headbutting motion, narrowing its eyes while glancing at the both of them.
"You… want to fight us? And then you'll…" She paused, raising her brows a little. "… You want to join us if you think we're worthy of your strength? Is that it?" The Bagon seemed a little surprised that Chris had understood and nodded its head firmly. Christina smiled and stood up again, placing her gloved fist in her other hand's palm. "Alright, we'll take your challenge! Ready Sindy?" The Cyndaquil squeaked, the flames on its back flaring up again as she faced off with her new foe, the Bagon's eyes narrowing again as it spread its legs slightly apart, readying itself to attack.
"Alright, let's get this test started! Sindy, hit him with a Quick Attack!" Sindy obliged and dashed forwards, surprising the Bagon by crashing straight into its chest, sending it stumbling backwards. It was tougher than Christina had figured, though, as it growled out angrily, rage shining in its eyes and ran forwards, swinging its head to slam it into Sindy's side, sending her tumbling.
"It's okay, we've got this! Let's show him how strong you are! Extrasensory!" Sindy opened her eyes slightly, a purple glow surrounding them as the air behind Bagon rippled before a flameless explosion happened, sending the little dragon tumbling forwards. However, this seemingly only served to piss it off as it snarled and charged forwards, once again slamming its head into Sindy's side. However, this time, Sindy staggered a lot more than last, to Chris' surprise. "W-whoa! Be careful Sindy, I think it's getting stronger!"
Sindy was still stumbling as the Bagon ran around her, opening its maw before clamping down on her back, the flames on her back seemingly doing nothing to him, as Sindy whined out in pain, writhing in the strong Bagon's jaws. "Crap! Sindy, try to get out! Otherwise, you'll faint!" Sindy continued squirming and wrestling in an attempt at freeing herself, but the Bagon had a very powerful grip on her. Chris bit her lower lip, clenching her hands into fists while desperately trying to think of something. Finally, her eyes widened and she pointed at the Bagon. "I've got it! Sindy, use Smokescreen!"
Sindy growled out and clenched her little paws, the flame from her patches dying out, only to be replaced with a thick smog. Instead of covering the area, the smoke went into Bagon's mouth, its eyes widening and watering as it quickly let go of Sindy, stumbling backwards, coughing and hacking for air."
Chris smiled to herself at her quick thinking. "Okay Sindy, let's do this! Tackle him and show him who's boss!" Sindy squeaked out challengingly and ran forwards to the still stumbling Bagon, its watery eyes widening as the Cyndaquil slammed into its chest, sending it to the floor. It lay there, coughing weakly, trying to get up before finally collapsing against the floor, still conscious, but very weak.
Christina threw her hands into the air and did a little jump. "Nice one, Sindy! That was some great fighting!" She stepped over to the two, smiling as she pulled out a potion from her back, lowering and spraying it onto the Bagon. The little dragon blinked and slowly got to his feet again, blinking a little up at Chris in surprise, before putting on the angry, annoyed expression again, growling out quietly and looking away.
"So… does that mean you'll travel with us –and- help us find the exit?" Christina questioned, tilting her head a little. The Bagon, turned away, was silent for a moment, before nodding his head. Christina smiled widely and pulled a Pokéball from her pack, holding it out to the Bagon. The little dragon looked from the Pokéball to Chris before gently tapping his head against the ball, allowing himself to be captured. Chris smiled brightly and looked at Sindy. "We have a new companion, Sindy! And it's a –dragon-! I can't wait to show him off to the others… although he seems really… uhm, prone to anger. So I'd be careful around him."
Sindy squeaked out and nodded quickly, seeming just as happy with their new companion as Christina felt. Smiling, she released the Bagon once again, standing up and putting his ball away. "Great, welcome to the team! Now let's get out of here. I can imagine you're dying to get outside as well, aren't you?" The Bagon huffed a little, looking at Sindy for a moment, giving a small, respectful nod at her, as if recognizing her strength. He then proceeded to turn and start walking down the hallway, with Christina and Sindy following right behind, the red-haired trainer smiling brightly. This maze had been good for something, at least.
Vincent was certainly feeling sorry. There was no amount of excitement that a bunch of ruins could conceive that would stir any enjoyment in Vincent. He wanted to implore with Melody to simply skip the ruins and head south towards the next town. There was a gym there! They could make progress. At this point, he kind of wanted to slip past her and do his own thing. She wouldn't notice, but then again, she'll probably hunt him down. Perhaps it would be better to entertain her for a bit and prove that he was not someone to stick around with. Vincent grinned at his own genius, but he made sure to make it only subtle so Melody didn't catch on to his sinister intentions. It worked on that other girl, so why wouldn't it work on her? The logic wasn't perfect but it was worth a shot.
Vincent kept his gait slow and methodical, dragging behind Melody as she continued to lead the way. The geography of the route slowly became a bit hilly as the two crept ever closer to the ruins. A few rumbles of thunder could be heard in the distance and the entire situation truly became unsettling. At least for Vincent. He admired storms and the like, but something about this one felt almost natural. Coincidental even. He didn't like, but kept his suspicions to himself. There was no reason to alarm Melody and truthfully, he doubted she would even care. The reality of the matter was he was being dragged along by this overly energetic girl and she deserved to be freaked out by whatever storm or accident occurred. It wasn't quite justice, but it was what she deserved. Not that justice ever served Vincent well.
Entering the ruins, the rumbles grew more frequent and slightly louder. It was only a matter of time before the storm would be overhead. Already the clouds looked thicker and darker. We should probably head into the ruins soon. However, there are so many of them. I guess we'll have to take the tour then.
"Oi! Mel!" Vincent yelled out to her. "We should probably head back and take the to-" Vincent said, before crashing to the ground with a loud groan.
Melody turned to face Vincent as he had began to speak, her eyes widening as she watched the boy tumble to the ground. The girl quickly made her way towards Vincent. A look of worry made its way to her face as she knelt down close to him.
"Are you okay...?" Melody questioned. "Did you trip over somethin'?"
"Ugh, I've been better," Vincent said with a groan, sitting next to Melody as he dusted himself off. "I think I did. What the f- Is that a sword over there?" Vincent blinked as he pointed at the ground.
Vincent dug into his pockets, pulling out his Pokedex and pointing at the sword in the stone. "Honedge eh? Steel and Ghost. Well, that would explain why it looks fancy. It's a damn Pokemon," Vincent said with a chuckle. "Dibs!" He shouted at Melody. "After all, I need another member to the team," he continued, clicking a Pokeball off his belt. Now, let's see. If that old man from the academy was right, there a couple of types that don't work well on ghosts. What were they? Normal types? Yeah, that makes Brian just about useless then. I gotta use Hanzo then. Having made up his mind, Vincent chucked his ball at the Pokeball and Hanzo emerged from the light.
Melody looked at the sword Pokémon and then back at Vincent and his Froakie. "Um... Do you maybe want some help?" the girl asked with a smile. "You can catch it if you want, but I heard that Steel types are supposed to be like, super hard to wear down... A lot more so if you don't have any of their weaknesses to throw at 'em."
"Tch. Are you trying to insult me?" Vincent barked back at Melody. "I don't need help. Ever. Got that?!"
"Oh... Um, okay then!" Melody replied, giving the boy a quick nod.
Despite the sudden change in Vincent's voice, the smile never left Melody's face as she took a few steps back from the boy. Blossom on the other hand, had a rather nasty look pointed in his direction. The small grass Pokémon let out an annoyed set of chirps, but Melody did not seem to particularly pay them much attention. Rather, she took a seat in the grass close by and placed Blossom snuggly into her lap.
"I'll be rootin' for you two, Hanzo and Vinny! Good luck!" Melody cheered.
Hanzo and Vincent looked at each other and nodded. "Alright. Let's use old faithful to start off with! Aerial Ace!" Hanzo seemed to vanish for a second only to reappear with a swift strike right at the floating sword. The Honedge had appeared to brace itself, parrying the attack ever so slightly. Hanzo bounced back, sliding against the ground. It slid back to mere inches away from Vincent. I guess because it's a steel type, most physical attacks aren't going to work in general.
The Honedge appeared to dance around for a second or two before it's single blade shone brightly. Then it lunged forward with a large sweeping slash. Hanzo ducked around the large blade. The Honedge cut at the air again, but Hanzo leapt up pushing itself off the sword with another graceful dodge. Honedge made one more quick cut, this time grazing Hanzo's body. The frog Pokemon nimbly landed despite the attack and blew a wave of bubbles at the steel type. Honedge attack again with a fury cutter, hitting Hanzo in the same spot before. The attack did noticeably more damage.
Vincent was growing frustrated at the battle, knowing that Hanzo was struggling a bit. "Jump back Hanzo!" As the Honedge geared up for another Fury Cutter, Hanzo leapt back, placing its back at the wall. The water type looked nervous, but Vincent looked at Hanzo dead in the eye and winked. It was then that the Pokemon finally realized his trainer's change in tactics. The Honedge went for a finishing blow, the blade shining brightly despite the dreary cloudy day. However, Hanzo at the last second dove out of the way. The blade got stuck in the rock wall behind Hanzo. Honedge attempted to free itself but it was too well incase in stone to budge. "Water Pulse, Hanzo!" Using the new techinque it just learned, Hanzo said a large pulse of water at the Honedge, knocking it free and crashing to the ground with a loud clank of steel. Wasting no time, Vincent chucked a Pokeball at the Honedge and swallowing it with a red light. The ball fell to the ground, shook violently for a few seconds before ceasing any movement. Vincent walked slowly and picked up the ball, attaching it to his belt. "Like I said. I didn't need your help," he said seething with pride to Melody.
"Nope, you totally didn't!" Melody exclaimed, smiling brightly at Vincent as she climbed to her feet and made her way over towards the boy. Blossom chirped happily in response towards Hanzo, giving the small frog an equally bright smile. It sounded almost as if the little Chikorita was giving him some form of congratulations of her own for his hard-fought battle. "I bet Honedge will be a great addition to your team, Vinny! Wha'cha gonnd name him?"
"Hmmm," Vincent murmured before snapping his fingers. "Excalibur. After that cool sword I read about in some stories. It suits him...well I think it's a him that I caught. Oh, doesn't matter. It's a cool name."
"Yep, it's totally awesome!" Melody agreed.
It was at that moment, that the celebration of Vincent's new catch was quickly brought to a close. A rather loud clap of thunder rang out overhead, causing Melody to jump a bit in surprise. The winds were slowly starting to pick up as well, most likely meaning that the storm that had been slowly coming about was not long from finally appearing.
"H-Hey, Vinny... Maybe we should get to the ruins for a bit... You know, so we don't get struck by lightning or drown in a torrent of rain... or somethin' like that?" the girl asked quickly, glancing up at the boy with a weak smile.
"I guess we could check out that tour if you insist on stickin' around here," Vincent suggested with a shrug. He rather liked the storm, but Melody seem scared. Sure, he didn't care too much but she proved to be decent company. At least she respected his personal space.
"Oh, the tour!" Melody exclaimed, her eyes lighting up once more. "Yeah, we should totally check it out!"
Vincent sighed a slight bit. "Alrighty then. Follow me then. I think I know where to go to," he said. He motioned for Hanzo to follow, rewarding the frog Pokemon with some more time out of the ball. Hanzo leapt up and perched itself on his shoulder, mocking Brian the Pidgey slightly with some strange ribbit-like noise. Vincent then looked over at Melody: "Come on, Mel. Let's head towards the main entrance."
Melody nodded, picking up her pace to where she was walking right by Vincent side once more. The girl was quite excited about getting a chance to look around the ruins that were just ahead. For some reason, Melody just knew something exciting was about to happen...
Sarah Walter
Chapter 4 - Ruins Of Alph
h5UiTkQ.png
iyCgXh7.png
Sarah beamed a big smile as she walked along the road holding a small box which inside contained something very precious to her, it was of course her first gym badge. She successfully defeated Falkner in order to procure herself the Zephyr Badge. However Falkner was no push over, granted he is ranked as the lowest gym leader within Johto but he gave Sarah a fierce battle even pushing her to the edge of defeat, but thanks to her newly acquired Poliwag, she managed to pull through leading to a victory for both her and her team. She placed the box back into her bag, raised her head and looked up at the sky to see it covered in clouds with some low grumbling of thunder being heard in the distance, she let out a small sigh and brought her head back down and looked around at her surroundings. Just a small bit away from her she could see a sign which pointed to something called the 'Ruins of Alph'. Due to her curious nature, she decided to follow the sign, heading of in the direction of these ruins. It was the first time she had heard of this place, she had heard of many different places within Johto, but this place was completely alien to her.
Reaching the ruins after a very short walk she could see there was several stone buildings and even a small museum for people to visit and explore. Sarah decided to head into the museum because according to some people talking nearby, one must take a guided tour in order to visit the old stone buildings and Sarah right now was enjoying her own company so she decided to stay put. The museum was filled with all kinds of old and decrepit materials, bits of pottery, rocks and even some fossils. The walls were lined with pictures depicting certain Pokémon and a much older Johto. Bookshelves were in abundance, filled with books presumably dealing with research towards this area. It was all a bit overwhelming for Sarah but she decided to look through the books on the bookshelf none the less. She picked up a random book and sat down on a small chair seated not too far from the bookshelf itself. The book dealt with research relating to the ruins and anything contained within it. It was incredibly in depth and well written, the only problem was that it was extremely boring! Sarah flicked through the pages, not reading any of them before getting up and placing it back onto the shelf again. She decided that checking out the pottery and fossils was more her style.
After checking out the museum for an extended period of time she exited the building and emerged outside. She looked up to the sky to now see that it was much duller and heard that the thunder had now become more frequent and louder, the weather was getting worse, no doubt about it. She decided to head back inside to wait in the small porch area of the museum, thinking about what to do now.
Exploring the ruins would be pretty cool, especially after everything I've seen inside and considering I can't risk heading to the next town now with this storm rolling in. Looks like I'm gonna be stuck here a little while longer Sarah thought. She continued to stare out the doors until something caught her eye. There seemed to be two individuals acting very suspicious a short walking distance away from the museum. They started peeking out from a rock and then going back to hiding again if someone looked in their general direction. As far as Sarah could tell, their sights seemed to be set on the exit. "Maybe I should check this out. I wonder what there're up to?" thought Sarah.
Luckily for Sarah these shady individuals didn't seem to notice her at all as she exited the building and then proceeded to slowly walk across towards their hiding spot along with circling behind them to avoid being seen. As she got closer and closer she could start to see that they were all dressed in black and one of them seemed to have some items in their hands. It was only until Sarah was within talking distance that she could see that the items looked identical to the ones in the museum. Given their current position, their current clothes and the fact that the items looked identical to certain ones in the museum, Sarah came to the realization that those items were more than likely stolen.
She clenched her fists and swallowed a lump in her throat. She didn't know why, but this was nerve wracking. She steadied her hands before shouting at these mysterious individuals.
"Turn around and give those items back! They aren't yours!"
Both shady figures slowly rose from behind the rock with a mischievous grin on their face before turning around and standing directly opposite Sarah. Sarah could see now that it was a man and a woman. Sarah took a step back and placed one hand on her belt as they stood directly across from her.
"Little girl …. Do you have any idea who you're messing with? If you know what's good for you, you'll scram now and forget you ever saw us. Understand?" the male spoke in a rough, menacing tone.
"N … No … I won't do that. Those things don't belong to you and you have no right to take them! Now give them back!"
The male figure chuckled at Sarah's response. "You have no idea who we are, do you? We're Team …" Just before he could finish his sentence his female companion slammed her hand down on his shoulder and shook her head as he looked back at her. The male nodded before continuing to speak.
"Ok! Never mind that. The time for talking is done. If you won't stand aside, I'll make you stand aside!" shouted the grunt as he hurled a Poké Ball into the air, it cracked open revealing a spherical Pokémon with a skull-and-crossbones marking just below its face. It was of course a Koffing, something which Sarah had never seen before so she was unsure what to expect from it.
Sarah unclipped a Poke ball from her belt and threw it on the ground. "Go Fennekin!"
After a small flash of white light on the ground, Sarah's Fennekin stood poised ready for action.
She could tell that her opponent wasn't about to let himself get defeated easily, especially considering that him and his partner had all this stolen gear from the museum. Sarah frowned and prepared herself for a battle, the one thing which showed off Sarah's fiery personality.
Blaine - Finally a light in the darkness!
Blaine managed to stand up after a few moments and decided to test out his legs. At least his bones hadn't been shattered by the fall! He looked up at the hole they had fallen through and sighed, "Of course, why even try to look for traps in ancient ruins?" He muttered to rose up into a seating position. He rubbed the back of his head and saw his crystal on the ground. He quickly snatched it up as he saw Derpy near a wall… sucking on an exposed rock. The Totodile spat out his new toy as he walked on over and pulled on Blaine's leg, gurgling as he pointed out into the darkness.
"Well great, no lights, no way to see if I'll fall down a bottomless hole. This day keeps getting better and better." He had to work himself up the wall, doing his best to use it for support as he stood on his feet. His legs felt like jelly but with the wall he managed to start moving through darkness. His eyes were straining quite a bit to see, but after a while they began to adjust and he could see only a few inches around himself. Of course with such prevalent darkness his senses were going to be tricked and so began the onslaught of noises and images he would see out of the corners of his eyes. Every little breath taken seemed to become a growl to Blaine and every time he moved he sword he could hear something hidden in the darkness scratching its claws along the walls.
Of course he had a rational mind, but also an imperfect one at that and soon Blaine was finding himself slowing down considerably. On the one hand he wanted to find the exit and get out of here as fast as possible… on the other if he turned a corner he might end up face to face with a Garchomp who would quickly devour him in one gulp. He did his best to get rid of the image, but it just kept popping up over and over again.
Soon he found himself slowing to a crawl and finally stopping against the wall, his heart thrashing wildly in his chest as he could clearly picture being chopped up and served as dinner to whatever gruesome monster existed down here. He was starting to shiver, sweat trickled down his neck, … and Derpy chomped his fangs into his leg.
Blaine cried out in surprise, fear, and anger and quickly fell back to a sitting position just as the water type let go. The boy glanced at his mon and at those eyes that could quite easily illuminate the vile personality the starter had. The Totodile stared at him for a few moments before reaching over and patting his knee, letting out some soft gurgles. To Blaine it seemed as if the Totodile was trying to comfort him and the trainer sighed, "I need to get my act together. Alright."
Slowly he began to rise, "We're not stopping here. No, we have to get out of these tunnels. Sure we might get eaten by a dragon or two, but that still won't stop us!" Derpy let out a gurgly cheer, "We'll find the light of the exit and push to it!" The start let out another cheer. "No stopping us now!" Blaine placed his hand against the wall and felt along it as he made his way down the path, made a turn, and screamed like a little girl. He fell down onto his rump as he stared at the strange object floating there in the darkness.
After a while Blaine burst into laughter, "Oh… that got me good." He said as he wiped some sweat from his brow. The object floated there for a bit, before slowly turning and an eye appeared on its body. "Unown." It chime out. To any sane person who hadn't been wandering around in a dark tunnel they might have seen the creature as something cute. Blaine however quickly jabbed a finger out to point, "Derpy attack!"
The Totodile smirked as he ran in front of his trainer and opened his jaws wide, "Toto!" he cried out as a gush of water flew out and slammed into this strange pokemon. The black figure cried out as it was hit and ended up reeling back. That eye had held a neutral expression before but now it glared at Derpy. The iris glowed purple as suddenly some nearby rocks rose up and flew at Derpy, smacking the Totodile right in the head. Derpy in turn staggered back and huffed angrily.
Blaine whipped out his dex and pointed it at the creature, "Unown… uh, not much data is here." He said as Derpy gritted his teeth and allowed the light shimmer of water to coat his body. In an instant the Totodile flew up at the psychic and slammed into it. Just as his attack ended a blue glow formed over his body and the Totodile was flung out and slammed into a wall.
The Unown floated to the downed Totodile as Derpy groaned. The water type shook his head and glared at the psychic. That didn't scare off the strange pokemon as it instead began to float around Derpy, almost as if wanting to observe every inch of him. Even though it was curious that wasn't going to stop Blaine from fighting back. "Derpy, Water Gun!"
The Totodile let out another gush of water at the being and the Unown was thrown up into the air. Blaine took out a pokeball and threw it was the Unown fell. The red light briefly illuminated the area before darkness became prevalent once again. On the one hand, the ball wasn't opening so that meant it had to be successful… however the ball had landed somewhere else… in the darkness… Blaine sighed and began to search around, using his hands to try and find the ball as Derpy joined him in the search. Eventually Blaine put his hands into his pockets and blinked, pulling out his phone and clicked it on as the screen illuminated the area.
"Oh, haha… I forgot I had it…" It was Derpy's turn this time to just stare at his trainer. Still, with the use of his portable light Blaine was able to scan the area and easily find the ball. He clipped it to his belt and smiled, "Well, that wasn't so hard. Now to get out of here." Blaine wasn't so great with directions, but Derpy seemed to know what to do. The Totodile eagerly led Blaine through the hallways and surprisingly they managed to encounter more unown down here. How could there be so little evidence on these psychics when they were so abundant?
Still, he knew they were psychic and with his panicking state removed thanks to his light he instead allowed his new Nincada to battle them, given the psychic weakness to bugs. Unlike Bellsprout and Derpy this Nincada seemed to have a single mindedness to the way it battled. Blaine would call out for Leech Life and the Nincada would do it. Funnily enough unlike his other mon the Nincada really didn't speak during battle. It just would silently eye its opponents and do whatever was asked of it. That of course was a welcome change from Derpy, but now that he thought about it he could use this place as a training grounds of sorts. Still, it seemed as he walked along to find the exit he found less and less mon in his path. He had found only three Unown for the Nincada to battle… and that was it. Maybe he was just lucky and came upon rare pokemon easily? Well, that was trait he wouldn't mind having then!
The Nincada just walked along Blaine and the trainer thought for a moment, "Hm… how about Legious? I mean, you're like a soldier in a way and you have that attitude." The Nincada just stayed silent and Blaine shrugged, "Alright, you'll be Legious anyway." Out from the darkness suddenly came a loud cry and Blaine paused as he held up the light to try and see into the distance. "Hm… where-" He didn't finish as suddenly a large shape came running out of the darkness and slammed into Nincada on the way past.
Blaine watched as the bug went flying and smacked back onto the ground on his back. Blaine quickly tipped him over as the being came into the light. Blaine took out his pokedex and looked at it, "Hm… Bagon. Dragon type… well, if I get one more mon I'll have six… I'll have a full team at least." He said.
The Bagon cried out again and made another charge, this time with Legious begin hit smack dab in the face by the rocky head of the Bagon. It was good that Legious had been using Leech Life in all of his battles, at least he wouldn't be put down so easily here.
"Legious, he's a dragon so he's tough, use a Sand Attack!"
The Nincada buzzed his wings as ground came flying up from the ground. The bug angled his wings as the dirt struck the Bagon in his eyes, yet that seemed to make the dragon angrier! He roared out and slammed once more into Nincada. At this point it was easy for Blaine to figure out that the Bagon was using a Rage attack similar to Derpy's. "Another Sand attack!" Blaine commanded and once more the Nincada sent dirt into his opponent's face. The Bagon cried out and charged again, though this time Legious side stepped and the Bagon ran on past, having to stop and turn about to growl. "Once more, sand attack!"
The Nincada's wings buzzed as more dirt came out. In fact so much dirt had hit the Bagon's eyes that the dragon's eyes naturally began to produce tears to try and remove the dirt. That only made the dragon even angrier as he charged and once more missed Legious. "Awesome! Leech Life now!"
The Nincada bussed and dashed forth, it's small fangs sinking into the Bagon's side as it drained some health from the dragon. It quickly dashed away as the Bagon tried to hit it once more. "Harden!" Blaine said as the Nincada's body glowed a bright white and its carapace grew a bit thicker. The Bagon managed to strike at the bug again, but another Harden helped to improve Legious defenses.
It was soon becoming a game of tag in a way as Blaine had Legious drain health from his opponent, then use either a sand attack or a harden to keep ahead of the Bagon who at this point was just attacking for the sake of attacking. Legious mostly stayed rooted and the rushing nature of the Bagon took its toll on the dragon, soon causing it to pant and gasp, and finally it fell onto its stomach, groaning a bit from exhaustion.
Blaine took this as the perfect opportunity to ready a pokeball and toss it at the downed dragon. It was easily sucked up and Blaine retrieved the ball, "Nice work Legious." The bug only let out a light buzz and Blaine sighed, "You aren't talkative much huh?"
The two continued on down the tunnel and Blaine could spy a bright light ahead, "Heh, the exit!" He said eagerly as he made a dash for it, but then paused, "Chrstina, you around?" He called out. "If you can, come to my voice! I finally found the exit!"
(OOC: Named my Nincada finally! Name is Legious. Caught an Unown and a Bagon, and also saw you haven't added my Smeargle onto the front page yet. It's Sketch became Water Gun.)
"Hmm… are you sure you know where the exit is, Conan?"
The Bagon walking along in front of the red-haired trainer came to a stop and glanced over his shoulder with a half-annoyed and half-surprised look on his face. If it had been anyone other than her or Sindy, he would've wasted no time charging right at them for doubting his abilities. Instead, he was slightly confused at the word she stated at the end.
Christina blinked a little and came to a stop as well, giving a sheepish little smile down at the little dragon. "Oh, uh… I decided to name you Conan. Just seemed like a great name for a stout, strong fighter like yourself. Is that okay?"
The Bagon looked thoughtful for a moment before letting out a little huff as if saying 'Sure, whatever', and promptly turning around to continue walking along the semi-darkness of the long corridor they found themselves in. Christina sighed a little in relief as she followed after both Conan and Sindy, who was walking along besides him. Phew, that was close. I can tell that he's going to be… a bit of a handful.
The trio continued walking down the torch-lit corridor, with the same, oddly eerie sounds piercing the sound around them, with the group only stopping briefly for a quick snack. Conan didn't seem all that happy with the choice of food, but he gobbled it down none the less. While they were walking, Sindy and Conan seemed to be chatting a little together, which made Chris smile. She was happy that Sindy finally had a companion and hopefully, a friend, to talk to. While Conan's replies seemed short and to-the-point, he had some sort of grudging respect for Sindy, which was also shared with Chris, probably because they managed to defeat him so thoroughly.
Suddenly, something seemed to whiz by Chris' face, causing her to stop and look around her. She definitely felt something brushing past, but even in the light of the torches, she couldn't see anything. "… Hey, guys, hold up. Did you feel that?"
The two Pokémon came to a stop and turned around, looking up at Christina before looking around in the hallway. Everything had gone eerily quiet, and even the weird, ambient noise that she had heard earlier had disappeared. The suddenly tense feel in the air made Chris swallow down as she stared into the darkness of the hallway in front of her. "Well… uhm, maybe it… wasn't… anything at all…?" She waited another few moments before taking a step towards her two 'mon, just as a metallic-sounding,, echo-y ringing sort of noise erupted somewhere behind her.
She froze in place, her eyes wide as she slowly turned around, greeted by a large pair of white eyes, staring directly at her. She let out a shriek and stumbled backwards, falling and landing on her rear with a wince, Conan and Sindy running up beside her, both of them preparing to protect her. After her surprise and her heart beating firmly in her chest, Chris looked up to see that the two eyes were actually two –separate- eyes. One of which was in the shape of a U and another, in the shape of a T, with black… limb-like appendages protruding from said eye. Both of them were hovering in the air in head-height where she had just been standing, slowly rotating around one another as they looked between her and her Pokémon.
"W-what-" Chris began before letting out a nervous little laugh. "Oh, they're just Pokémon! Arceus, I almost ran away in fear then…" She pushed her hands to the floor and stood up, her heart still pounding and her breath a little staggered, but she felt a lot more confident now that it wasn't just some sort of threat in the dark. She smiled as she pulled out her Pokédex and aimed it at the two creatures. "Alright, let's see what these two are…"
Her expression went from relieved and curious to baffled and confused as she stared down at the dex. The display read 'Error, unknown Pokémon'. "… Unknown Pokémon? What do you mean 'Unknown Pokémon'? You can't –not- know-" She paused, staring from the dex, up at the two creatures that continued to hover around one another in a sort of still spiral. One of them suddenly chimed out in that otherworldly sort of hum once more. "Unnnn…" With the other continuing the first one's chime. "… Oooown."
Christina stared with wide eyes at the pair, looking down at the dex again, triple-checking that what it was saying was right, and that it wasn't just a typo or a malfunction. "I can't… believe this. I stumbled on a completely new Pokémon! It all makes sense! If the ruins have been shut off for hundreds of years, there's a possibility that nobody has seen these Pokémon before! This could be the ticket to overcoming my brother's fame I've been looking for!"
The girl grinned as she made sure she had a pair of Pokéballs at the ready while taking up a battlestance. "Alright guys, you ready to see what these things are capable of?!" Sindy let out a squeak while Conan snarled, glaring at the two Unown, which seemed to lower themselves a little down, as if wanting to level the playing field. "Great! In that case, Sindy, use Ember, Conan, Bite!"
Sindy spat a slew of embers forwards, one of which connected with the T, sending it flying backwards. The U managed to fly sideways, avoiding the Bagon's bite, though this only served to anger Conan, who growled and went after it again. The T began glowing dark-blue, which also appeared around Sindy, before the Cyndaquil was tossed sideways along the hallway's floor. "Ngh! Keep at it Sindy, hit it with a Quick Attack!"
Sindy lowered herself down before dashing forwards, just as the T began glowing again, but before it could react, the Cyndaquil slammed into it, sending it tumbling backwards. Conan, meanwhile, had managed to be outmaneuvered so far, the U finally glowing as well, sending the Bagon into a nearby wall. Without Chris even calling out for the Bagon to attack, Conan lept to his feet again, almost unharmed, snarling out with fury shining from his eyes as he dashed forwards, leaping into the air and slamming his steel-hard head against the Unown, slamming it into the ground.
Just then, however, Sindy came flying from the side, slamming into Conan and sending them both tumbling. She'd been sent flying by the other Unown, both of which were now hovering side by side once more, as Sindy and Conan staggered to their feet, ready to fight again.
"Ngh… this isn't easy." Chris was biting her lower lip, but smirked, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "But I have to learn to manage several things at once sooner or later. "Sindy, use Extrasensory on the U, Conan, keep using Rage!" Conan snarled and shot off like a rocket, his eyes burning as they locked onto the T, the Unown scattering to continue their assault. Sindy's first flameless explosion missed the Unown as it was flying around, but with a quick tip from Chris along the lines of 'Aim in front of it instead of at it', the second one connected, the Unown plummeting to the ground. Its brother joined it a moment later as Conan had managed to smack it around twice with its Rage attack, now standing over it with its little chest rising and lowering, and the anger slowly leaving his system.
Christina narrowed her eyes and tossed both the balls she had prepared forwards, swallowing up the two Unowns. They both rocked around on the ground in unison before calming down once again and Christina did a little jump on the spot before running over to pick up the balls. "Wow! That went –really- well! I can't believe I won my first double-battle! Or, well… -we- won it." She gave a bright grin down at the two, lowering down to pet them both, Sindy seeming rather happy with it and Conan simply growling and turning his head away, crossing his little arms over his chest.
Standing up again, she patted the two balls now resting on her belt, smiling down at them. "Great. Now, I just need to meet up with professor Pine sometime and we'll figure out just what-" She paused, looking up and out into the darkness of the hallway, her two Pokémon doing the same. They all seemed to hear some kind of echo-y voice, and as Christina strained her ears, she heard a semi-familiar voice, echoing from further down the hall.
"… you can, come to my voice! … found the exit!" There was no mistaking it, it was Blaine! Christina smiled and looked down at her companions. "Sounds like Blaine found the exit as well! Come on guys, we need to get to him!" She was just about to take another step as she felt an odd warmth emitting from one of the balls containing the caught Unowns at her hip, her eyes widening as the warmth grew in intensity and suddenly, everything was replaced with a bright-white light for just a second, along with the feeling of being lifted a foot or so up into the air. A second later, she felt her feet connecting to the ground again, causing her to stumble a little. "Gah! What in the world…?"
She looked up and around, the hallway seeming more or less the same except for two things. On her right, about a hundred metres away was a stoney archway cut into the wall, with a dull sort of daylight creeping in, although the dark-grey clouds outside didn't seem all that inviting. On her left however, just about fifty metres further into the dark hallway was Blaine, with his back turned, shouting back into the hallway. Christina's eyes were wide as she looked between the exit and Blaine, then down to her two Pokémon who seemed equally as confused as her. She gave a brief look down at the two captured Unown, the balls now as cold as normal and equally inconspicuous.
Blaine and Chris: Hallucination or just being crazy? You decide!
Blaine finally heard something approaching and turned to the sound. He had to hold up his phone yet again to try and see what was in the distance, but whatever it was also had a light of its own. In fact it looked like there was some sort of lit torch in the distance. Legious was as calm as ever and Blaine had to rub the back of his head awkwardly, "So uh... I guess get ready just in case it's something bad." He said to the Nincada. Still Legious didn't tense up and Blaine looked on but he soon relaxed, "Looks like a Cyndaquil. That much be Chris."
Christina raised her arm as Blaine turned towards her, smiling brightly. "Blaine! Hey!" She half-ran over to him, stopping in front of him with a warm smile on her face. "You found the exit! Nice job! Are you okay? You didn't run into anything nasty and get hurt, did you?"
Blaine nodded as the Nincada cautiously regarded Sindy and the Bagon. It chirped lightly and stepped back a bit. "Well at least we didn't die down here. Oh you got a Bagon eh? I found one too." He shrugged, "Well did you see anything... else?" He asked warily, "Like... giant floating eyeballs and the like?"
Sindy gave off a little squeak as well, waving one of her little arms at the Nincada before shaking her head, letting out another little squeak. Conan simply snorted and crossed his arms, promptly ignoring the bug. Christina raised her brows slightly. "You saw them too? Yeah, there were a couple of them. When I pointed the dex at them, it said that they were an unknown Pokémon species. I can't wait to show them to professor Pine." She gave a bright smile and gestured at the Bagon by her side. "This is Conan, by the way. He's, uh... pretty feisty."
Blaine nodded as the Nincada visibly relaxed, though Derpy's ball opened up as the Totodile came out, gurgling happily and looking generally cute. He looked over at the gathered mon and ran up, jabbering a bit as he patted the Nincada's head and causing the bug to shiver a bit. "Anyways I got one that looked strange. It was all black and it just... I don't know. I mean, how can there be species still we haven't seen before you know?"
"I guess it's because they're down here in this labyrinth and nobody's been down here before?" She shrugged lightly to add to her questioning statement. Sindy growled out quietly at Derpy and Conan continued ignoring both the Totodile and the Nincada.
Blaine nodded, "I guess, well we can show this tunnel to the guides and all, see what they can do about it. I'm sure that there are some relics down here that they can label or something." Derpy meanwhile let a single hand grab one of the Nincada's antennas and gave a tug as the bug squirmed. He just jabbered on to Sindy and winked as he let go, once more patting Legious' head.
"Yeah, I suppose. So, should we get out of here? I think I've had more than enough of this underground... maze, whatever it was used for back then." Sindy dug her paws slightly into the ground while glaring at Derpy with her squinted eyes, the flames on her back billowing somewhat angrily.
Blaine nodded as he recalled Legious into his ball and began to make his way to the exit, "Yeah, anyways we can find that statue again and maybe we can try and fit the stones in it?" Derpy hopped along, slowly a bit to walk alongside with Sindy, just grinning all the while at her.
"I dunno, Blaine, I think we'd just end up falling down here again." Chris gave a shrug as she turned and followed Blaine towards the exit, with the three mon walking along behind them, Sindy returning Derpy's grin with a scowl of her own. Conan gave a glance in Derpy's direction, but simply snorted and looked ahead again.
As soon as they were out Derpy made his way to be right by Conan, jabbering a bit as he just smiled at the dragon with that same naive smile. "I guess you're right." Blaine said. "At least we can tell them about this maze down here."
"Yeah..." Chris glanced up as they got out, frowning. The skies had gotten even darker and the rumbling thunder had moved in closer. It was definitely going to rain soon. As Derpy made his way up to Conan and began jabbering at him, the Bagon turning to look at Derpy with a surprised expression at first, which quickly turned completely overtaken by rage as he bent his head backwards and simply slammed his forehead square against the Totodile, snarling out angrily.
Derpy fell back, but as he did he whimpered and let a few tears form along his eyes. The Totodile sniffled before bursting into a crying fit. He jabbered on and then ran and hid behind Blaine, sniffling as he let out a few small croaks. Blaine looked on and at Chris, "Uh... what was that about?"
"W-whoa! Conan!" Chris blinked in surprise, staring in confusion down at the Bagon who was about ready to pursue Derpy, at least going from the angry look in his eyes. "Conan, stop! What're you doing?" The Bagon continued snarling, but the rage slowly subsided into just him being very angry as he began jumping up and down, jabbering and growling while flailing his arms around. Christina shook her head and sent Blaine an apologetic smile. "... Heh. Sorry. I, uh... haven't really gotten control of him yet."
Blaine shrugged, "Eh it's okay. It's just how wild pokemon act." He said. Derpy made his way over to Chris and lightly patted her calf, almost as if also to assure her it wasn't her fault, "Toto toto." He said as he rubbed his tears away and offered a weak smile to her.
Chris looked down at Derpy and gave an unsure little smile. Before she could say anything though, Conan came flying in from the side again, crashing square into Derpy's side and back, head-first, causing Christina to stumble a little backwards. "... Okay, that's enough!" She pulled her ball from her belt and recalled the Bagon, who was just about ready to attack once again.
Derpy laid on the ground, whimpering a bit and soon got up and ran to Blaine, hugging onto his leg as he gurlged out, the only one left who could understand him being Sindy. "Well... you might want to get some lessons in for him." Blaine said as he patted Derpy on the head.
"Heh. Maybe." Christina shrugged a little, glancing down at Sindy, who simply huffed out and turned away from Derpy, walking over to Chris. She smiled and leaned down to pick the Cyndaquil up in her arms. "Anyways, we should go and tell the guides about the-" She paused as she turned towards the exit of the labyrinth, her brows raising in surprise as the exit they had come out of was completely gone. It was as if it had never been there at all, replaced with a smooth, stone wall of a small house. "... Exit to the labyrinth. Uhm. We -did- come out there, right?"
Blaine looked back and frowned, "Uh..." He looked down at his waist, "We still have the pokemon we caught there... um... we didn't hallucinate that did we?" He asked. "That couldn't be hallucinating... wait the statues! We can find them again!" He said with a smile, "But... I mean we weren't in a house or anything that I can remember from." Derpy just clung to Blaine's leg and after a while stopped clinging, but still looked the part of being tense.
"I... hmm. I don't know Blaine, this seems really... weird. I think going back to the statues is only inviting trouble. I'm just gonna hold onto these Pokémon and show them to Pine at some point. You can go ahead and talk to the guides though." She offered him a smile and gave Sindy a little squeeze, hugging the Cyndaquil to her chest. "I better get a move on though. I wanna get to the next center before it starts raining."
Blaine nodded, "Yeah, me too. But I'll just talk with them still. I'll catch you around Chris, just be careful and all." Derpy gave a small wave from behind Blaine. The trainer picked him up and made his way back to the information booth.
"You too, Blaine! It was great seeing you again! I'll catch you later!" She smiled warmly and gave a wave as Blaine and Derpy headed off, lowering down to give Sindy a little peck on the forehead, turning and heading out of the ruins via the pathway.
Melody Hughes, Aberdeen Montany, and Vincent Baker
Chapter 4 - Ruins Of Alph
And It All Came Tumblin' Down
The weather was looking darker as Aberdeen finally queued up outside the museum to join the guided tour around the ruins. He noticed that other visitors were giving him stares and keeping their distance though. Huh? Oh, Honedge was levitating just behind him, giving off hostile whirrs or threatening to draw her blade if people came too close.
A nervous looking man in his twenties, with neatly combed red hair and a green suit, approached Aberdeen.
"Excuse me, uh... 'sir'. Would you mind putting that pokémon away as we start the tour?"
"What, why? I thought pokémon were allowed outside their pokéballs," Aberdeen objected.
"Well it's... Um, your pokémon is a bit..."
"Just withdraw it already!" some random man's voice from the group came, and several people voiced their agreement.
Aberdeen swallowed hard. Welp. He hadn't really caught Honedge properly yet. He faced her eye and saw that she wasn't really angry, rather nervous herself. How should he get himself out of this situation without making her feel worse?
Melody smiled brightly as she led Vincent to the outside of the museum. The girl was slightly afraid that with the delay the duo faced when Vincent caught his Honedge that they would miss the tour of the ruins. Needless to say, Melody was quite relieved to see that the tour group had not yet departed.
"See, Vinny! I told ya we wouldn't be too late!" the girl exclaimed, beaming up at the boy.
"How disappointing," Vincent said with a sigh. I was hoping we'd miss it and skip the ruins completely,he thought to himself. "Let's just try to avoid that kid over there with the Honedge. Little twerp can't even control the damn thing. If I am going to sit through the tour, I at least want to attempt to learn something." Maybe it won't be too bad if I try to enjoy it.
"Someone else has a Honedge...?" Melody questioned. She glanced over in the direction that Vincent was looking in. Her eyes widened as she spotted the boy he was speaking about, quickly recognizing him from back in Cherrygrove City. "Aberdeen...? Aberdeen, is that you?!"
Ab swirled around and found the source of the voice calling his name in the crowd. A happy looking girl with pigtails. He didn't quite recall her, but perhaps she was from Cherrygrove just like him?
"Hello, hello," he said, waving a hand and smiling a bit sheepishly, noticing the glare from the boy beside her. "Uh-oh." That guy was probably one of the people unhappy with his lack of control over Honedge. As the girl seemed to want to walk up to Ab, he hurriedly turned back to the sword pokémon.
"Please, pleeease step into a pokéball for a while, okay?" he whispered and saw her appalled look at his suggestion. "I promise I'll let you out later, okay? I rescued you, I wouldn't lie to you!"
The crowd and the girl and Aberdeen confused Honedge and a thunder from the sky didn't exactly help in the situation. So when Ab offered an empty pokéball at last, it was almost a welcome sensation to nudge it and get sucked inside. To safety and calm. For a while. Though... hang on a minute, had she just let herself get caught by a trainer?
Ab let out a breath of relief before he spun back right in time to face Melody with a bright smile. "Sorry, hi! Do I, um, do I know you?"
Melody smiled, nodding at the boy. "Sort of! Both our mom's work at the Pokémon Center in Cherrygrove! I've seen you there a few times when I would go there with her... Although I don't think we've ever really talked a whole lot before... I guess maybe we know each other in passin' would be a better way to put it... Anyways, my name is Melody. Melody Hughes!"
As if to give the boy a proper greeting, Melody shifted the Chikorita she had still been carrying about in her arms. She extended her right arm forward, as if motioning for the boy to shake her hand. Blossom meanwhile, beamed up happily at the boy, giving him a friendly chirp of a greeting.
Aberdeen's eyes widened at Melody's explanation. Now that she mentioned it, it was quite obvious. His mother had a few colleagues at the Pokémon center about which she spoke now and then, and he could actually recall a bouncy girl, often with pigtails, being there sometimes when he was. He just hadn't really been the guy to pay much attention to girls previously in his life, as his sister and Rachel had been girly enough to make him want to postpone that part of puberty for later.
"Wow, maybe I do remember you after all," he said, maybe sounding as if he was trying to be nice in a cheesy, sneaky way but actually just being bluntly honest. "Nice to finally talk then, Melody Hughes! I'm Aberdeen... But, uh, I guess you already knew that," he added with a smile and gave the Chikorita a quick pet on its golden head.
Hanzo, still perched on Vincent's shoulder, fired a look at Blossom indicating his lack of acceptance in the Chikorita perky disposition. Likely Hanzo had felt Vincent's own apprehension about Melody insisting on being kind to every single person. It meant that Vincent, in turn, would have to deal with people. Like this Aberdeen. The boy couldn't put his own Pokemon into a ball. How did it make this far if he was from Cherrygrove? Was Falkner that pathetic of a Gym Leader that he couldn't stop trainers like Aberdeen?
Vincent simply looked around and saw the tour was about to start. "Sorry, but not sorry to break up your lovely little moment but the tour is starting," he said in a low but harsh voice. Vincent made his way over to the tour guide intending to at least attempt to get something out of this wasteful venture.
"Oh, just in time," Ab commented with a nod at the clouds above, which were the darkest yet. He counciously put a hand down to his belt, petting Honedge's pokéball as to assure her in some way that things were okay.
Before much more could be said, the crowd gathered behind the young male with red hair and green suit, the tour guide. He led them inside the biggest ancient building, through an arch several meters tall, made of sandy brown stone. They were pushed and nudged by the crowd - which was consisting of twenty or so people - through an entrance hallway that had probably been pretty epic before the ceiling had been partly torn down and one wall had gone completely missing. The guide made a short intro speech about the age and era of the Alph ruins and the importance of keeping your Pokémon in shack throughout the tour, before they went through a slightly narrow corridor with strange paintings on the walls.
"These paintings are believed to be some of the first written words in the world," the tour guide's still somewhat nervous voice came from the front of the group, still strong enough to be heard to the ones in the back - namely Aberdeen, Melody and Vincent. "Not all has been properly translated, and the shapes of the letters..."
"Hey," Aberdeen said with a friendly smile at Vincent, not really finding the talk as interesting as the front rows of the tour group, and sensing that Vincent might feel the same. "So you're Melody's friend?"
"In a matter of speaking," Vincent said with a grunt. "What's it to ya? Got a crush on her? She's all yours, kid." Vincent spoke without offering Aberdeen as much as a glance, staring at the various pieces that the tour guide pointing, trying to memorize every detail because it gave him something to do.
Ab was momentarily stunned by Vincent's words and shot a glance at Melody. "No, I don't... I don't have crushes," was all he could think of saying, before he mentally slapped himself because it was a rather dumb choice of words.
"Not that you're not cute!" he therefore added urgently to the girl. "I mean, not that I'm going around thinking about it. No, I mean, oh, nevermind. Anyways! I became a traveling trainer because professor Pine wanted me to raise a pokémon of hers. I was just guessing, because of your Chikorita looking a bit odd... That maybe you're on that mission too?"
Melody remained quiet for a moment, not quite sure how to respond at the moment. Melody had a deep shade of crimson gracing her cheeks from listening to the banter between Vincent and Aberdeen. The younger boy's comment did nothing to aid in getting her blush to die down for that matter. Needless to say, Melody was quite thankful when Aberdeen switched the topic over towards her Chikorita.
Melody glanced down quickly at Blossom, nodding in response. "Y-Yeah, that's right. She was a gift from the professor. I'm supposed to watch and observe her behaviors and stuff as she grows. Like, her color is supposed to make her special or somethin'."
"Yeah, that's what she told me too! I guess she has a lot of trainers running around doing her a favor these days. Here, look!" Ab said and took out his unusually brown Chespin from its pokéball. This pokémon was a lot calmer around people than Ab's Honedge had been, and smiled a happy, toothy smile when he recognized Blossom from the lab. Pine's grass pokémon had been lumped together at times, after all. "This is Chespin. Chespin, meet Melody, Chikorita and..." He glanced up at Melody's friend and realized that he still didn't know his name.
Blossom smiled down at Chespin, chirping happily to see a familiar face. She began to excitedly wave her little, stubby front legs at him, causing Melody to smile at what seemed like a long-awaited reunion between good friends.
"Vincent," he said cutting in before Aberdeen fumbled over any more words. "And this is Hanzo before you even think of asking," Vincent gestured towards his Froakie. "And about this whole 'oh my, our Pokemon are different colors' talk continues, I think we need to realize that you are making a big deal about nothing. Who cares if our Pokemon are different colors? I don't see sensible people making big deals about your hair color or her eye color being different from mine. Same goes with Pokemon. It doesn't make them any different from any other Froakie, Chikorita or Chespin," Vincent made sure to mock their chirpy tones before shifting his voice deeper as he concluded his little rant.
Aberdeen frowned, something he didn't do too often. Was Melody really friends with this guy? "Professor Pine said it was important. If you're part of the study too, didn't she tell you that? But yeah," he gestured towards Chespin, "it's not like I think Chespin's more valuable than the rest of my pokémon, if that's what you're getting at."
"Yeah, I agree too!" Melody chimed in, grinning brightly at both Vincent and Aberdeen.
Before more could be said, the crowd in front of them started moving again, pulling the trio along. They exited the narrow corridor with the strange letters and entered a huge, mostly intact room, wide stone laid stairs leading down from the arch of the corridor into the bigger space. There was a long way up to the ceiling and there were many thick pillars made of dented, brown stone throughout the hall. Here and there between the pillars, there were walls that only went a few meters up, as if to divide the big room somewhat without losing the spacey feeling. A gloomy light spread through the hall from the tall window openings high up in the walls, and from the cracks in the ceiling. The guide ensured the group that it wouldn't fall down on their heads though; the restauration project had stabilized the parts where the tour was given.
From the top of the stairs, Aberdeen thought the whole room looked somewhat like a maze. He wouldn't have wanted to walk around here without a guide to lead the way.
"Wow... This place is kinda creepy," Melody said quietly, looking around in awe. "You know, that scary-kinda-creepy, but the cool-kinda-creepy."
The Chikorita nestled in her arms seemed to have the opposite opinion as Melody. Rather, Blossom closed her eyes, shaking a bit as if she was scared of her current surroundings for some reason. Melody glanced down at her Chikorita, gently petting her head with a weak smile on her face.
"Don't worry, Blossom. I won't let anything happen to you," the girl reassured with a soft voice.
Vincent was not moved by the new surroundings like Melody was, sharing Aberdeen's silent observation of the labyrinth like design that the room introduced them all to. At this point, he didn't particularly want to be on the tour, hoping that it would end soon. The sights and sounds were being encased in memory, but the memories were tainted by boredom, repitition and the occasional reminder he was dragged into it. If only some excitement would flash before him.
It was that moment, as if fueled by his perverse wish, that a blinding flash beamed through the tall windows of the room, followed by a booming rumble and a shockwave radiated from the walls causing the entire room to quake violently. Bits and pieces of the walls and celings fell to the ground like small raindrops. Some panic filled the room, but as the ceiling began to collaspe, chaos ran rampant. People were spilt up in the maddness and the tour guide tried his best to maintain order. His calls fell on deaf ears as every man and woman was out for themselves.
Aberdeen threw himself instinctevely to the ground, shielding Chespin and trying to pull the closest person with him, which happened to be Melody. She was just out of reach.
Melody watched the scene play out with wide eyes. Everything had been so calm and relaxed a moment ago. Now the entire room was thrown into chaos, The girl was snapped out of her daze as she felt a sudden weight nestle itself further into her arms. She glanced down, seeing that Blossom was postiviely spooked by this point. Melody did her best to try and calm the Chikorita, gently stroking her back and whispering comforting words to her. While they did seem to have some effect, it was still clear that Blossom was still a bit shaken from the incident.
"Is everyone alright?!" Melody called out, glancing around to see if Vincent, Hanzo, Chespin and Aberdeen were all still with her.
Aberdeen nodded, sitting down on his knees near the stairs with Chespin in his arms. He wasn't too shaken, rather he felt excited.
"I'm fine," Vincent answered, seemingly appear out of nowhere behind Melody. Hanzo followed along, choosing to stand at his trainer's side rather than on his shoulder. "Seems the place is caving in. We should probably get the hell out of where unless we...I'd rather not think about what we'd have to do actually."
Aberdeen fought down an urge to say that he'd like to think about it. "Yeah, let's go!" he instead agreed.
"Oh no, what do I do, what do I do!" they suddenly heard the tour guide say, walking over some rubble nearby. The ceiling had disappeared - or rather, it now lay on the ground around them - and the very dark clouds above were visible, growling at them.
"Are you alright?" the guide said when he spotted the trio, but he didn't wait for an answer before he rambled on, very rapidly. "Everyone in the group ran in different directions deeper into the ruins! What were they thinking? The tour is only set in the safe part, but deeper down there could be unstable areas and if the lightning strikes again-"
"Breathe!" Ab interrupted, moving up to put his hands on the guide's arms and stare at him.
The man did breathe, but not any slower. His eyes shone up when he saw Chespin, Blossom and Hanzo though. "Wait, you guys are trainers, right? You're used to tough situaions, you could go and fetch the rest of the group and take care of yourselves, right?"
"Um..." Aberdeen hesitated, glancing back at Melody and Vincent. He wasn't too tempted to risk his own life for a bunch of frightened people who didn't have sense to stay put or at least run towards the exit in an emergency. Not without compensation, at least.
Melody seemed a bit hesitant to reply. On one hand, she felt that venturing further into these more unstable parts was a bad idea. If it did not take a great deal to bring down parts of this section that was suppsoed to be safe, what chance did these other parts to the ruins have in not collapsing? Then again, now that she knew other people may have been trapped further in... She really could not justify just leaving them there, especially when there was a chance that she and her friends could do something about it.
In the end, the female trainer knew she had to whatever she could in this situation to help, it was the right thing to do. Melody turned to glance over at Aberdeen and Vincent. A look was on the girl's face that was pratically begging them to tag along and help.
"You can't be serious. We need to get out of the caves. Not go in there and risk our lives. No way. Count me out," Vincent said. He looked around and began making his way to what he felt was the exit with Hanzo following along closely.
Ab let go of the shuddering guide and looked from the girl to the other boy. Melody's face was like having a puppy - a pretty cute one at that - beg you for food and want nothing in return. And even though Ab might have basically agreed with Vincent, he was once again put off by how blunt and rude the guy was. Thinking that you didn't want to help isn't the same as voicing your thoughts without hesitation. Besides... His sister, Anabel, came to his mind, reminding him of why he was accepting Pine's offer on the journey in the first place.
"We'll help," Aberdeen therefore said with a determined face, before flashing a smile at the guide. "It might be dangerous. But you only live once and I don't want to live my only life like a coward! Come on!"
Chespin cheered and motioned for Blossom to jump down and join him as he and his trainer began climbing the rumble in the large hall.
"Or are you too scared, Vincent?" Aberdeen said, standing on top of a fallen pillar with a sly face. He couldn't help himself at this point.
Melody watched as her Chikorita chirped happily at Chespin in response. For some reason, the fact that one of the grass types seemed so confident and sure was more than enough for Blossom to work up some nerve after all the disturbances. She leapt out of the trainers arms, quickly making her way to join Chespin and Aberdeen.
Melody still seemed to be some what hesitant. She glanced between both of the boys one more time, before flashing a small smile at Vincent and then making her way to join the other boy in his mission to rescue the lost tourists.
"Wait for me, Ab!" Melody called out as she made her way over towards the rubble.
Vincent grinded his teeth and spat at the ground. That little runt thinks he's better than me. Aberdeen's little taunt was merely a taunt. Vincent knew this, but it was something about his delivery. It got to him. Probably the fact that he was completely wrong. Vincent wasn't scared. He doesn't get scared. He gets angry. Here, he was angry at the idea of having to do things for other people with little to no benefit for himself. He rolled his eyes and slowly followed Melody towards Aberdeen. At this point, the idea of helping processed more like a complete and utter waste of time. Time better spent on training, but Vincent would help. At least then he might get out of the caverns on accident or something.
Sarah Walter
Chapter 4 - Ruins Of Alph
A loud thunder was heard from the dark clouds looming above. The weather was as ominous as the two dark people standing ready to fight Sarah off in the Ruins of Alph.
The female grunt scoffed. "The kid's actually gonna battle you," she said to the male, who grinned.
"It won't even be worth calling a battle," he said. "Koffing, Smog!"
The purple, levitating Pokémon breathed out what looked like a thick stream of filthy gas, curling itself through the air towards Fennekin on the ground. There was no doubt touching that gas would sting in one way or another, not to mention inhaling it.
"Fennekin dodge it!" shouted Sarah but alas she wasn't quick enough and the gas hazed around Fennekin causing the small fox Pokémon to fall to the ground coughing.
"See?" the male grunt said with a shrug at his partner, who nodded.
"No!" shouted Sarah as she watched her Fennekin try its hardest to shake of the gas. She panicky reached down to her belt and unclipped Fennekin's Poke ball before aiming it and returning the fox Pokémon. She placed the Poke ball back onto her belt before unclipping the second ball and tossing it into the air.
Out from the Poke ball appeared a short and round blue Pokémon. It was of course her Poliwag which she had caught on route 30. She sent out her Poliwag a few feet away from the filthy gas so thankfully it was useless now.
"You don't know when to stop, do you?" the male grunt growled.
"Okay Poliwag. Use Water Gun!" said Sarah as she grinned, obviously proud of her switch out in order to prevent the gas from doing any more damage. A solid stream of water came shooting out of Poliwag's mouth and headed straight for Koffing on the other side of the field.
The poison Pokémon got caught in a straight hit, blasting hard into a big stone.
"Koffing, Assurance!" its trainer shouted, and Koffing gathered a dark aura around itself, getting up from the stone and shot forward in what looked like a strong tackle towards the little Poliwag.
The Koffing came flying across the field towards Poliwag with full force. "Dodge it Poliwag" Sarah said as she clenched her fists. The Koffing had its sights set on Poliwag, so when Poliwag jumped the side, the Koffing quickly moved to the side also and struck Poliwag with its full force.
Poliwag was launched backwards and landed just beside Sarah's feet. Reaching down she picked up Pokémon and gave it a check over to see if it was okay. She could see that Poliwag took a nasty hit and was clearly badly injured, but she wasn't about to let these crooks walk.
"Do you think you can continue on Poliwag?" quizzed Sarah. Poliwag responded by giving a small frown before leaping out of her hands and back onto the battlefield. Sarah raised herself up, frowning while doing so. She pointed directly at Koffing and ordered Poliwag to use Hypnosis.
Several small rings started to appear on Poliwag's swirl at the front of its body before they drifted across the battlefield heading straight for Koffing.
"Let's see how you battle when your Pokémon's asleep!" shouted Sarah as to almost taunt the Team Rocket goons.
Koffing didn't stand a chance. It stopped levitating and fell back onto the ground, eyes closed with its face snoring loudly. The male grunt groaned and returned the Pokémon to a poke ball.
"Move over," the female sighed and shoved him aside before tossing out another poke ball. A purple snake curled up on the ground, hissing violently towards Sarah. "Wrap!"
Ekans seemingly jumped forward and ensnared the water type in its long, strong body. In a normal battle, it would have been Sarah's turn to issue a command here. But the thief didn't seem to play by the rules. Before Sarah had time to take action again, she called out another command.
"Bite!"
Ekans opened its mouth and bit down hard on Poliwag who was wrapped up tight. Poliwag couldn't do a thing but endure the hit, a hit which would prove to be too much for the poor Pokémon because as soon as Ekans released its jaws and grip from the Poliwag, it fell to the ground knocked out.
"No …" whispered Sarah as she looked onwards at her Poliwag. She reached down to her belt and grabbed Poliwag's Poke ball. She aimed it and returned it back into its ball. She held the ball in front of her for a few seconds while looking down at it smiling before clipping it back onto her belt.
Sarah looked over at these crooks thinking to herself as she did. "Poliwag's down! I totally would have won this battle if that woman hadn't stepped in and taken over. Take about unfair! But I can't give up now … my father wouldn't run from something like this so neither am I!"
"Come on out Fennekin!" said Sarah as she released her starter Pokémon from its ball. Standing on the ground was the small fox Pokémon from before, of course minus the smoke now.
She clenched her fists as she locked her sights straight at the goons directly opposite her. "Fennekin … heat that Ekans up by using Ember!" shouted Sarah.
A small ball of fire started to appear in Fennekin's mouth before it shot across the field heading straight for Ekans.
Ekans was struck and scorched by the embers and seemed to be really bothered by it.
"What a wimp of a Pokémon you have!" the male grunt suddenly spat out at his partner.
"They're not trained to battle, they're trained to destroy!" the female retorted.
"How are you supposed to destroy things if you can't stand a hit from others?"
"He's just nervous is all!"
"Whatever," the male said, waving away the woman and turning back to Sarah. "Kid, you're way in over your head. The fun and games are over. It's time to finish this!"
The male reached down and pulled out a Poke ball and released the Pokémon inside. It was another Koffing, different to the one from before. These guys sure didn't have much imagination when it came to their team of Pokémon.
The male looked over at the female grunt and gave a small nod as a sinister smirk appeared on his face. Sarah stood baffled, two vs one!? How was this fair? All she had left was Fennekin, Poliwag was already knocked out.
"What are you doing? This isn't fair! You can't have two vs one in a trainer battle! Retreat your Koffing now!" shouted Sarah.
The male goon chuckled when he heard this, "My my, such fire and such passion from such a small girl. If there's one thing we –don't- do that's play by the rules. I told you to stay out of this but you insisted on meddling. Now we'll show you what we do to meddling kids!"
"Ekans, Wrap!" the female said as she grinned over at Sarah.
"Dodge it Fennekin!" replied Sarah, but Ekans proved to be too much for the poor fox as Ekans slithered up hissing and wrapped itself around Fennekin, rendering it immobile.
"Now let's finish this!" roared the male. "Koffing use Poison Gas on the girl".
Koffing floated across the field with Sarah locked in its sights. Sarah's eyes widened when it dawned on her what was happening. She was being poisoned by a Pokémon, and what was even worse was that it was under the other trainers command.
She quickly grabbed Fennekin's Poke ball and returned it before placing it back onto her belt. Raising her head up she was met by the Koffing which was right in front of her face. It spewed thick dark smoke from its body before it returned back over to its owner's side of the field.
Sarah was right in the middle of it, she started coughing profusely and tried her hardest to catch her breath, even after she had exited the smoke cloud. Unfortunately she had inhaled enough of the gas for it to take effect. She could faintly see the goons return their Pokémon as they laughed at Sarah.
The male rocket goon walked right over to Sarah who was now on her knees still coughing and trying to get her breath back.
"You were warned about messing with us. The only person to blame here is yourself because you were too stubborn to listen and you tried to be the hero" chuckled the goon.
He rose up and walked back over towards the female goon who was now standing with the bag of stolen goods from the museum slung over her shoulder.
"Let's get outta here" grunted the female goon before both her and the male drifted further from Sarah's vision. Sarah's continued to cough and her eyes were now starting to become heavy, she struggled to keep them open.
She tried her hardest but alas she was beat, her eyes closed, the coughing stopped and she fell to the ground unconscious.
The clouds above continued to rumble loudly with the thunder above. The storm was almost here, Sarah needed to wake up ... fast.
