im trying to go with a strategy of having moves that would cover being super effective over most pokemon, and this is what i have:
hitmonchan:
revenge-fighting type move-100 accuracy/60 power/10 PP
effects:
gains intensity if users pokemon has been hurt.

comet punch-normal-85 accuracy/18 power/15 PP
effects: hits 2-5 times

rock tomb-rock-80 accuracy/50 power/10 PP
effects: lowers opponents speed if hit

pursuit-dark-100 accuracy/40 power/20 PP
effects: works especially well if opponent switches out.

im planning on getting ice punch and switching it with comet punch when i get to level 26. this is for solo challenge so this is my team.

ice punch-ice-100 accuracy/75 power/15 PP
effects: 10% chance to freeze

all of the moves i have are physical, and all make contact except rock tomb so it leaves me vulnerable to poison point and similar effects. is this an okay moveset? if not what is?

this is the effectiveness of the moves, with ice punch instead of comet.
fight: 2x normal, rock, steel, ice, dark
rock: 2x bug, fire, flying, ice
dark: 2x ghost, psychic
ice:2x dragon, flying, grass, ground

I'm playing Platinum and I'm lost on my in game team. I ALWAYS chose Empoleon so I knew in advance what team I needed to run. With Infernape I'm kinda really lost. Tbh I've never used him in Platinum. Reason I'm lost is cos I need a good water and electric Pokemon. I'm aiming for a team I've never ran before and I've used quite a few Pokemon in the past in Platinum or any game for that matter. I wanna say away from Luxray, I mean he's good but I always had him on my team, and again I'm choosing Infenape so Empoleon is out of the question.

So far I only got 2 Pokemon planned out and that is Infernape and Gardevoir. I'm choosing Gardevoir over Gallade because Gallade is a physical attacker and by the time I get the Shiny Stone I'll of already passed up most of his good moves so I'm stuck with Gardevoir. Once I figure out my water and electric Pokemon I'll be able to complete my team. Also is a grass very useful in Platinum? I always had Roserade but if you guy's don't recommend Vapreon I'm thinking about trying Leafeon for the first time if he's worth it.

These are the moves my 2 Pokemon are gonna have and why.

Infernape - Flare Blitz, Shadow Claw, Close Combat, U-Turn/Stone Edge
Flare Blitz and Close Combat are both very powerful STAB moves so it's a no brainer for him. I'm running a physical Infernape btw. Shadow Claw covers it's Psychic weakness and if I go with Stone Edge it takes care of it's Flying weakness.

Gardevoir - Shadow Ball, Psychic, Calm Mind, Reflect
Psychic is a STAB and covers its Ghost and Bug weaknesses leaving only Dark. Shadow Ball also covers Ghost as well but also takes out Psychic types. Calm Mind makes for a sure special sweeping combo and Reflect to increase it's Defense when needed, for it has terrible defense.

Please don't recommend Empoleon over Infernape cos I believe I've made it clear and I'll just ignore your post. If you know where I can get a Shiny Stone early on in the game then say so, or if Gallade would be better than Gardevoir. I beleive Gardevoir is a solid Poke on my team so it really depends. I will put moveset changes into consideration but I personally think they are solid. Please, I repeat PLEASE don't recommend Focus Blast with Gardevoir. I know it covers it's Dark weakness but it's not worth fainting over because of it;s 70% acc. I went down that rabbit hole once with Dragon Rush and never again will I do that.

Why not try Quagsire for a Water-type? It's a little slow, but quite bulky. You can catch them on the southern (rainy) part of Route 212, and it's part-Ground, granting it immunity to Electric. It's got a solid movepool and access to Ice Beam to counter Grass-types.

If you want a good Grass-type not named Roserade, you should give Leafeon a go. It's movepool may not be the best, but its high Defense allows it to take a few physical hits and STAB Leaf Blade hits really hard.

Gardevoir can also use Thunderbolt via TM, eliminating the need for an Electric-type. Most Psychics can learn Thunderbolt, Shock Wave and/or Charge Beam so keep that in mind.

Spoiler:

First of all, which generation are you playing? You didn't state it in your question. I am going to assume you're playing B/W2. If not, please correct me.

Hmm..your current moveset for Hitmonchan isn't very good in my opinion. This is what I would recommend:

Close Combat/Sky Uppercut/Drain Punch - powerful fighting-type STAB
Ice Punch - counters flying-types
Pursuit - counters psychic-types
Any other elemental punch move for type coverage (Fire/Thunderpunch)

Hope I helped. If you have any other doubts, feel free to ask.

Ah, let's see if this is the right place to ask this. :) This isn't really a team help question, it's an "analyzing what I'm reading regarding one specimen" type of question.

I have picked up two Emolgas in my travels and am trying to decide which is the better one to keep (as I'm going to do an in-game trade using the other for a Gigalith). I'm currently training on Route 7, where a bird breeder always challenges you in B2/W2, getting ready to face the new Mistralton Gym. I am going to level up the Emolga to take part in the battle with Skyla with my other Electric types; I have six total, and all of Skyla's trainers (and her own birds) are weak to Electric with no immunities, so I may just go in with a single game plan unlike other Gyms. Further usage I haven't decided yet, but the Levitate ability makes it immune to Ground attacks, something I love (and the same type of reason I like Marshtomp/Swampert so much, being immune to Electric with Ground typing).

I decided to toy around with the Action Replay code for viewing IVs and EVs (naturally, EVs for both are all 0 right now), and here's what I learned about them:

1) Lv.22, EVs are 24/18/25/31/02/02 (yes, 2 in special defense and 2 in speed, but an impressive 31 for special attack)
2) Lv.31, EVs are 12/19/27/09/26/16 (special attack is now the lowest, but this one's defenses are up there near the best).

My analysis:

1) Provided I don't stick it against something it's weak to, it's an excellent special attacker and could likely take out a foe with a OHKO frequently, even if underleveled. Its HP is higher than average as well. Attack is about average, defense above average.
2) Defensively, it's a wall; however, special attack is nowhere near as good as (1) and it has lower HP, while basic attack is about the same.

I'm debating trying to capture a few more by inducing them into battle with Electric types leading the party, and then go to check their IVs as well. My question is this: what would be an ideal (minimal) IV set for a Pokémon like Emolga? Keep in mind my way of building a team is covering weaknesses, and I like having a Pokémon that has moves that will cripple its opponent; thus, having a good attack or special attack is probably more important than defense, though in certain matchups my defense might be more of importance.

(Think I just answered my own question, as I found and successfully captured a 19/13/30/30/26/19; I'll load it up with special attacks so the lower Attack stat. isn't an issue.)

Emolga's really not cut to be wall... if you want to use it, go for the 31 Sp.Att IV one.

While you're right in that it shouldn't be used as a wall, it has 2 in speed. :( The last one he captured has okay speed and 30 spa, which is comparatively better, given Emolga specialises in speed and having a 2 speed IV is very unfortunate.

Also @ Cyclone, it's not Levitate, it's part flying - in fact one of its abilities allow it to absorb electricity! :) Anyway you want to be able to outspeed her birds so you're best off going for the higher speed you can get (so because of Emolga being somewhat frail you need to not take many hits and rather all-out attack), given they're pretty frail and die easily (and generally she's the easiest gym leader to face).

team help

Hey everyone, I decided to take a break from White 2 so I could play Black 2. I chose Snivy for my starter and was wondering what a good/strong team would be to build around him. I already caught a Riolu because, well, he is !%@# awesome. Other than him though, who else should I get? Thanks in advance.

Please, help with my team

I now have for a team: Charizard, Venusaur, Blastoise, Raichu and Gengar. They are all level 100, but I do not have a sixth pokemon. I used Mewtwo, but using legendary pokemon is now forbiden for tournaments where I go.
Can anyone please tell me a good pokemon I could use? I would also be very happy if someone is able to tell me what are my type advantages and disadvantages with my current team.
I am sure you all noticed, but my team is all from Kanto, so please suggest a pokemon from that region.

One more thing. What are vitamins for? Once a guy told me to give them to my pokemon so they would get stronger, but since i defeated him I never did it. Does it increase the stats? And is that increase permanent?

Mr. X

It's... kinda effective?

It increases their EV's. When you have enough EV's (I think it's 4 @ lvl 100) then that will give you +1 to that stat.

Anyway, post the movesets and natures.

I would only add that this applies only when EVs are under 100.
If they are >= 100 then vitamins no longer work.
But seeing ranso's team is level 100, I believe if not full, then surely Pokémon have more than 100 EV.
Also, ranso33, may you specify which game are you playing? Because generation also helps as we'll be able to know whether the physical/special split is present.
