Let me guess. You just downloaded the sprite already made as a .gif and threw it into pokemon essentials?

I had this same problem a while ago, the solution is simple.
Long story short, the problem is with how the GIF layers were made, not good for essentials. You need a gif that uses the complete image every layer. There is a site with such GIFs
http://sprites.pokecheck.org/?gen=1&
But in this site the GIFs are half the size you want. Now you will need something that can resize all the GIF's layers at once (otherwise it will be tremendously boring, resizing every layer).
There is a site called gif magic, or something like that, where you can upload gifs and resize them. Try testing it with your charmander GIF, just to make sure your problem is the same I had.

Good luck.
