Setting
Welcome to the story of the Arcana Famiglia. In this role-play you play a member of the Arcana Famiglia, a proud family of gifted individuals, each of whom have made a contract with a certain Arcana card. The Arcana cards are items of huge power which will lend their strength to a human upon forming a contract with them and swearing their loyalty. Each card has different effects, some of which are more powerful than others, and each card presents itself as an Arcana mark tattoo somewhere on the host's body. Arcana cards work using the host's emotions as power, so in order to master the power of an Arcana card, the host must have full control over their emotions or the powers won't work as hoped. Only those proven to have a deep connection to their emotions and the power and dedication to sustain a contract are selected to host an Arcana card and are invited to become part of The Familigia; not all members are related by blood but there is a well established connection between certain bloodlines and their affinity to hosting the Arcana cards so many family members share the same ancestors. Having a contract with an Arcana card also lends the user powers when their emotions are high such as increased strength, vitality, speed, or even in some cases the ability to conjure and control balls of pure energy. Losing control of emotions whilst using Arcana powers can be fatal; therefore only the best are selected to join The Famiglia. There are a grand total of 22 major Arcana cards, all of which are governed and controlled by card #21, The World.

The Famiglia, led by their 'Papa', uses these powers to help their sunny trading island of Regalo survive any threats that become it and act as the island's government by ruling it in sectors. Set 30 years after the death of Mondo, the family's most beloved Papa to date, the island has become a bustling hub of peace and activity abound with docks and markets as far as the eye can see. Such a busy place obviously attracts a lot of crime but this is easily dealt with by Sword, the family's defence and policing division, leaving the criminals unlikely to re-offend whilst Sword remain vigilant. Coin, the family's economic sector, has run the economy well since the retirement of their previous leader Debito and as a result form a staple part of the island's structure whilst working alongside the other sectors of the house to ensure the community thrives. There is a large mansion with impressive steel gates and countless looming statues atop a steep hill in which the Arcana Famiglia resides, overlooking the serene sea-side town below with pale yellow buildings and canvas roofs abound. The city is often full of market stalls and boats coming to the island for trading, providing a warm and friendly atmosphere all year round. Almost every point on the island overlooks the vast blue ocean surrounding them, making it the perfect place for a little R&R.

30 years ago Mondo, the holder of The World card, passed away leaving his title and Arcana contract to Nova, his son-in-law. The holder of The World card is responsible for maintaining the power, contracts and stability of all other Arcana cards and is given the title of 'Papa', making them the head of the family. Cards being left without contracts or cards forming unstable contracts with their holder take more energy from The World to sustain, resulting in the host's life force being drained and leading to a premature death if contracts are not established for the remaining cards. Felicita, Nova's wife and the 'Mama' of the family, has a contract with two cards one of which is The Wheel of Fortune which she regularly uses to ease the burden that Nova carries, but as the life force continues to drain from him time is running out and The World needs a new host.

Plot

In his early childhood, Nova was abused constantly by his father and his powers were exploited by his family as a chance of getting rich; this became too much for Nova to bear and so his Arcana powers went out of control. His contract at the time was with card #13, Death, giving him the power to put people to sleep instantly, resulting in him cursing both of his parents with a never-ending sleep. After Mondo's passing and Nova gaining the powers of The World card, he used it to break his contract with Death and in turn broke the curse on his parents; however only his father Moreno awoke from the eternal slumber leaving his mother deceased. This caused Moreno unimaginable suffering knowing what his son had done to him and his wife and thus he swore revenge to show Nova just how it feels to be turned on by your own family. He pretended to be grateful for Nova saving him from the sleep and worked his way into the family to the point where he was able to make a contract with card #15, The Devil, giving him the power to control the emotionally weak to act at his whim. After having received this contract, Moreno disappeared from the family for 2 years with no trace leaving a huge strain on The World and therefore Nova as a conflict arose within the emotion of the Arcana cards.

After 2 years had passed Nova became too weak from the strain of The World to continue ruling the family and so passed on his responsibilities to his childhood companion Liberta, the family's executive head and second in command, whilst he focussed his energies on maintaining the stability of The World. Moreno heard of this news and took it as an opportunity to use the powers that he had been training since obtaining his Arcana contract and so contacted the Famiglia with threats of war. These threats were accepted by the family as they needed The Devil card back in their possession before the strain became too much for Nova to survive with and they assumed that one old man couldn't be any kind of a threat to them. However, when Moreno arrived at the Famiglia's house, he brought with him an army of warriors prepared to fight on his behalf, resulting in large bloodshed on both sides as the war raged on and powers grew stronger. A man named Luca, the family's adviser, finally managed to work out where Moreno's army was coming from as he had made a contract with The Devil, allowing him to control emotionally-weak people as his slaves and thus creating a huge army of those that had not learnt to deal with their emotions. They made for angry and vicious fighters as their rage and sadness was exploited by Moreno but just as all seemed hopeless for the family, Nova concocted a plan to stop the army's assault. He gathered the family together to find someone worthy of contracting with one of the most powerful Arcana of all; #1 The Magician, and eventually Luca was found to be the suitable host. He then used this power to amplify his previous Arcana, #14 Temperance, and use it to severely cripple Moreno's powers and therefore release most of his army from his control. A few fighters still remain which Moreno sends in waves to attack the Famiglia, but whilst Luca remains strong the army stays small.

Due to the huge strain caused by these events, Nova grows ever weaker and is in desperate need of a new contract to be formed with The World before it becomes too much to handle and he dies. However, such an important and powerful card cannot be given to simply anyone, so it's now up to you to see who gets the card and the title of 'Papa'. A tournament called the Arcana Duello will soon be organised to take place late in the year in which everyone with an Arcana contract will participate to test their powers and see who's strongest, and the winner will be granted one wish from Nova whilst becoming the new 'Papa' of the family. However Luca has been growing tired from the years of suppressing Moreno causing his powers to weaken by the day, so it's only a matter of time before Moreno will get his chance to strike again.

  • Liberta - Executive Head (#0; The Fool); Nova's best friend and Felicita's ex-love interest; leads the family whilst Nova is unable.

Rules
  • Each card can only be contracted by one player and each player can only choose to contract one card.
  • Arcana card contracts provide a primary effect (listed below) and a secondary effect; the secondary effect provides power, agility, stamina, and in some cases elemental effects such as conjuring energy balls (include in SU if relevant to your character).
  • Two players will be dealt a secondary Arcana card each but will not be told about them until relevant to the story.
  • If you wish to leave the roleplay, please ensure your character dies so that someone else may create a character to form a contract with that card.
  • There can only be one leader of each sector; if two or more apply to be leader of the same sector the decision will be based on each player's RP sample.
  • When fighting, players cannot control each other's actions but are able to control NPC actions, other than against enemies which are specified otherwise.
  • Players may create NPCs to speak to and interact with, but none may be part of the famiglia (AKA no Arcana cards can be used up by NPCs that are created by players).
  • At first, a maximum of 12 players will be accepted leaving 3 spare Arcana cards.
  • Players may apply to enter the RP at any time, but may be asked to wait till a certain event before joining.

Question, do 4 and 18 negate each other? Can the moon look at the memories removed from someone with card 4?

Card number 4 allows memories to be locked away in the person's mind or be slightly altered to change a few details within the memory, whereas card number 18 allows the holder to 'enter' the person's mind and physically look through their memories. As for memories locked by card number 4, card number 18 would be able to unlock them if a certain amount of emotional strength is supplied and depending on how long they've been locked away/how strong the memory is. Essentially they'd be freeing the memory from the chains that are holding it down which requires a lot of power if the chains are strong. Then once the chains are broken, the memory will return in the person's mind and The Moon card will be able to look at it in the same way as usual. Hope that makes sense :)

How did I miss this?!

This looks and sounds amazing. Is The Hanged Man considered to be one of the "powerful" cards? Because it certainly allows for a lot of survival, but isn't very effective in retaliation to combat.

It was only approved earlier today so you haven't missed much don't worry :D

Really it's up to you how you choose to take the power (as in whether they become intangible as a result of bordering on death or if it's just in response to any desperate situations such a rock falling from a cliff or whatever [likely on an island, right? xD]), so if you were to make it so the power only occurs when the character is about to die then you'd be able to have more secondary powers than if it occurred in response to any dangerous situation. It also depends on how long you choose for the intangibility to last, to what extent it has an effect (so if their whole body becomes intangible or if it's just the effected area and they're left vulnerable at other areas), whether they have to be aware of the danger or not to activate it (eg getting stabbed in the back may not activate it), etc. It's one of the more customisable cards in the sense that you have pretty much full control over how this one works, so really it's up to you how powerful you want to make it, just include how the power works as the "How the powers have manifested so far" section of the history and make sure the secondary skills keep it balanced. In general though, it's a card which allows for average secondary skills since survival is a great benefit, but it doesn't give much help in combat other than that. :3

Here is my SU, I rotated like 4 different cards lol
General
Name: Annabelle Belizaire (Anna)
Age: 18
Appearance: Anna is half black and half white (caramel skin) with dark hair that extends past her shoulders. She tends to wear street clothes that have been tattered and worn out, though she this is because of her pass time activities and not lack of money. Her hair is not nicely brushed by the end of the day, though if you catch her in the morning it would be very surprising for you to recognize her. (Excluding the fact that her mark is on the side of her neck below her ear, easily visible). She carries around a bag that has books, pencils, and empty journals, a rope, and occasionally there would be some candy or other treats (likely stolen, unless it is a pastry). A medium sized golden labrador retriever follows her around the city but is incapable of aggression.
Personality: Anna loves her dog, math, writing, and harmless chaos. She spends most of her time in the economic sector and recording what random people buy. When asked why, she will simply shrug and say, "Because I can." Though harmless there are people who know of her hobby and pay her for certain information regarding it (Wives asking what husbands are buying and vice versa, along with parents asking what their children are buying). Not only does she agree, but she will also record that transaction in case it is needed. Her master do not approve of this information trading and often scolds her.

To classify Anna as a rebel wouldn't be very incorrect. She doesn't do things to go against authority, as a matter of fact she respects the Swords and is an admirer of the family. It would be more correct to categorize her as a free spirit, as she only does what she wants. Normally her activities are benign though she won't think twice about drawing on the wall of a building or stealing small items from stores if her thoughts are into it. She can be very resourceful as well, especially when it is avoiding trouble. She seems to be a target for trouble, because every few days she will get in a fight with some delinquents or run away from angry shopkeepers. As a result she has decent fighting skills, enough to one on one another person and not get OHKOed that is. She has above average athletic skills for her age, and does her best to exercise when she isn't studying or causing trouble.

Anna is not anti-social, easily able to speak to others and even large groups, she just prefers not to listen to people or have any obligations to spend time with people when she doesn't want to. People who have met her claim that she acts much like an innocent ten year old with the mind of veteran mathematician, and indeed she is very immature (though this is a conscious decision on her end and she doesn't really think she is that good at math). She tends to do and say things on a whim without very little thought and she can't ever recall feeling angry or enraged before.

Arcana
Arcana Card: The Moon
Secondary Effects:She has increased flexibility, agility and endurance along with an increase in her intelligence. Her reaction time is also significantly higher than before. Her fighting skill would be the ability to create a small, weak energy field around her skin (capable of protecting from a fall, punch, knife stab or one arrow, but not very effective against a card holder with super strength, or a normal person with a sword or blunt weapon). She doesn't have an increase in strength, overall knowledge of fighting, or hand-eye-coordination.
Ability to control powers: Her use of the power is limited, it takes much time for her to find memories as each mind is different. It could take an our to simply find a name that was forgotten, thus she usually practices on volunteers who go on break and wish to remember something pleasant. Occasionally if she looks someone in the eye, there is a chance she could see his or her past, though this rarely happens and usually gives a name or event that she wouldn't have knowledge to use anyways.
Section of the house & position: Apprentice of the coin
History on the island: Anna was raised by a banker who taught her all of the ins and outs of managing, counting, and recording money and transactions. As long as she did the day's required work, her master would allow her to do whatever she wanted for the day with very little control. Often she would finish the day's work as quick and efficient as she could, making her master very proud, he often boasted about having a "prodigy apprentice". One day on a whim she broke into the Familigia's mansion on a whim, wishing to see what it looked like. At the time she was seventeen so when one of the guards saw her, they assumed she was a malicious person. When the guard went to apprehend her, she used her wit and athletics to outmatch him. After defeating him she explained what she was doing in the castle, apologized for breaking in and explored the house (with him tied up). Since it was night time, there wasn't too much activity but she did run into an occasional cook or servant who paid her no mind. After a good look, she decided she wanted to be a part of the house (only hearing rumors of the cards) and set out to find the head of the house. She stole a maid's uniform and looked around.

Eventually she bumped into Luca, who she mistook for the head of the house. She promptly asked for a position in a humble manner. Luca took her to see the "Papa". Though when she met him she couldn't quiet figure out what was wrong with him, so out of fear of insulting him she did not speak. Luca pulled her out, "What is the matter young lady? Does he really scare you so?" He said ever so kindly.

"Sir I did not say anything because what I would have said would surely have insulted him." Luca had laughed at the comment which made her confusedly ask, "No disrespect but what is so funny?"

"Well you beat up and tied one of our guards, broke into our house, and" He looked her up and down, "Stole a maid's uniform, and you were afraid of talking because you would insult him?" He laughed again, "Normally thieves do not act so polite."

"Sir, I am not thief I swear on my money, I wished to see what people lived in this manner one day, so I bought a rope and came in. As for the guard, he threatened to kick me out, so I tied him up. I was not going to keep this uniform either, seeing as it is much to soft and I would ruin it on my climb out the window."

"What of the front door?" He asked, "Would it have occurred to you that we may have allowed you a small tour?"

She thought for a moment, "It didn't neccisarily come up, though even if it had I wouldn't have done it. It would have been boring to follow a servant, this is much more exhilarating." She swung her arms and turned side to side, "I think you would do the same too because all people want to adventure, some are just afraid to do it."

"I can't say I'd want to break into my own house my dear, but I admire your honesty. What is your name?"

"Annabelle Belizaire, but only call me Anna, not Bell or Ann, but Anna. I live in the trade district with my master who is a banker." Anna held her hand out to shake his, "I do not wish to shake your hand, though this is the respectful gesture I was taught."

He laughed again and grabbed her hand, "Well thank you for the respect! Why don't you go in and talk to Nova now? I promise you that if you show this kind of politeness and honesty he will surely forgive you for breaking into his house, he may even invite you to the family."

"Very well, but you must stay out here, I do not wish for a crowd." She entered the room, though she didn't close the door, "Sir Nova, can I ask for your attention?"

"Why so formal" He had asked, "I believed you did not wish to talk to me."

"Well I was afraid of insulting you by bringing up your frailty, though I guess eithe way I am in trouble" She bowed her head, "Even though you are weak right now, you still demand great respect for surely one who owns a magnificent house as this is a respectful person!"

"Well as polite as that is, do you really not know who I am? What this house houses?"

"I heard it was a family of heroes, with great power and intelligence. Though I believe that to be rumor, for surely a family with great power would care less for this island. To be honest I think I care for this island more than any power or person out there." She really did love the island, though was not familiar with the history.

"What would you do with power? Would you use that love for the island to fuel your power and keep it safe?"

"That is a silly question sir, I wouldn't need power to feed off my love for this island."

"Do you have good memories of this place?"

"Yes sir, I have never felt anger toward the people, I love it here."

"Hold out your hand dear." He bestowed upon her the moon card, "You will be able to weed out the good memories of our residence."

As time went on, they eventually allowed her to stay in the house, though she still found using the front door to be incredibly lame, and just climbed through her bedroom window. She still spent most of her days in the city and helping her master, though now she would play through the houses corridors, city streets, and back allys. Her powers were time consuming, and she only perfected using her energy for defense reasons, making small energy fields. Her increased physical ability allowed her to learn various fighting styles and her increased intelligence allowed her to quickly solve math and strategical problems, making her known as the child fox due to her childlike hobbies and cunning nature.

She still loves the island with all of her heart, along with er dog, and her freedom. Though she feels that bad times are coming.

@CourageHound - Is your SU finished? Unfortunately transforming into animals isn't really suitable as a secondary power - that's more something that an Arcana card would have to give since it's a very distinguished ability. Also the history needs a bit more detail/information/general bulk and the ability to control powers section needs changing too since the card you've selected has nothing to do with the powers you're talking about - same with the history. Also a last name and a position within the Sword sector that you selected need adding :)

@Khawill - Love the SU! Only thing I would ask is for slightly more detail in the history - you never really explained why she thought about joining the family, why Luca accepted her, what she was actually doing in the mansion, what made Nova agree to contract her, how she reacted to her abilities, her life within the family so far... Adding another paragraph and editing the previous one would most likely be enough to cover all of this and it'll be accepted :)

@Lilizuki - Amazing SU, I especially love what you did with the arcana mark on her back and the whole verging on immortality concept you've introduced is really fitting for The Hanged Man. Accepted! I'm curious, are you planning for her immortality to dwindle as she progresses through the story/gains more control or is this something that's set in stone for her? Or are we going to find out as the story pans out? At any rate, can't wait to see her in action!

Name: Tobi Lomborte
Age: 18
Appearance: Tall about 5ft 11in
Dark-skinned with short, straight black hair, the front strands of his hair falling just bellow the rim of the forehead and all the other sides about the same length with the exception of the back falling a tiny bit. Vibrant violet eyes Usually wearing long cargo jeans, (any)solid-dark top with an image of a wolf. He wields a sword personally handcrafted at the request of his father that fostered him upon entering the famiglia and is a memento of their nice treatment of him after taking him in from the orphanage.

Glancing at Tobi when hes in a neutral mood you'd see a plain facial expression lacking significant emotion and not very inviting. When enjoying himself, say; off on casual walks you would find a small grin on his face showing hes happy or content. Hands fitted with black leather, finger less gloves, and grey jacket. His arcane mark looks like a jagged dark sphere, containing star like figures with tiny wavy triangles making their way around the perimeter, encompassing his left shoulder. Half of the sphere is slightly faded as opposed to the other pith black side.
Personality: Usually reserved and quiet you wont often see him in any big conversation. Passing by, you might seem to find him serious. However Tobi is prone to variable mood shifts, depending on how hes feeling. You might see him happy, laughing and smiling one moment and see his trademark serious face some time later.
However despite that he is very intelligent, adores nature, helpful to everyone around, and tries to do his best to be friendly. However he doesnt like discussing his abilities of the Aracana outside the family much. He doesn't tolerate bullies or people with evil intentions.

Arcana Card: #19 The Sun
Secondary Effects: Upon attaining his power and ability to influence a person's good nature grants him a source of vibrant energy. This energy could be used in various ways such as speed, strength endurance, or even to conjure light, heat, or pressure from his palms if given enough energy. He uses his acquired energy in varies ways such as reinforcing his armor and weapons or giving him the edge over ill minded foes in battle by momentarily distracting them with gracious thoughts. He can spare a fraction of the energy he attains to another if he wishes.


Ability to control powers: Being able to control his powers was very tricky for Tobi being as young as he is. He usually succeeds to wield his powers in a stable environment to being able to concentrate and is usually unsuccessful at performing in hectic environments. However he discovered that his own power is the very answer to that. By reaching into people and realizing the good in the, he uses that serene energy to put himself at ease, even in the thick of battle. That also means he can tell if someone was truly pure evil. However only having several years in practice in his Arcana he could often feel overwhelmed by the energy or have an unintentional effect on people while passing by.

Section of the house & postion: The Sword- The faction of which guards the harbor and ports. Once joining the family, Tobi was at loss at when offered a section of the family to reside in due to his past and restriction of properly expressing himself. As such it was suggested by Nova to place him under the sword to complement his abilities' potential in combat. Tobi accepted mostly due to the scenery of the harbor and ports he is assigned to protect.
History on the island: Being an orphan housed under a village orphanage he had a rough childhood. Often mistreated and taken advantage by other children of despite his many talents Tobi grew up in his younger years being quite shy around others albeit seeking and longing to acquaint himself with another. This led to his habit of isolation and had him focus on this such as art, literacy and fencing. Such talents and distinguishing features he displayed only ostracized him further from the children and other commoners around him, claiming him "different".

As he grew into his early teens he accidentally ran into Falicita while on a daily errand for his foster parents. Spilling the contents of her bag as they bump into each other Tobi insists on assisting on aiding her and bringing her items back to the manor. Upon arrival Nova and the other residence of the manor were interested in such an intriguing boy who would go out of his way to help a strange lady. Over time through secretive test and examinations of character and aptitude through requests and even inviting Tobi to certain family affairs he was given an invitation into the manor. At first flabbergasted, he whole heatedly accepts his invitation. Tobi was then sent into the sword section of the manor while retaining the name of his foster parents.

Ever since gaining his powers he contains to make personal strides to meet the standards of the manor. Often feeling himself sluggish and slightly clumsy with his powers, Tobi retains a minor, yet reserved, inferiority complex with the more adept members of the family. The other members of the family vaguely recognize this and mostly acknowledge his efforts, albeit lightly stressing from time to time he tries to hard and to slow down a bit. Tobi however is on good terms with everyone and has made a few bonds, mostly due to his abilities and being able to see and understand the good qualities in the others. However his general character and lack of extensive prior social skills due to his upbringing cause him to be slightly obscure about himself with the others and unintentionally distancing himself slightly. Although being slightly distant from the others in the family his powers grant him incite on the true feelings and character of all he meets.

Not really finnished. Was waiting for your opinion since i havnt done a role play before, so I kinda fished around her there, and everywhere. Kinda glad i'ma be changin some stuff tho~

It's better, but still a couple of changes need to be made if that's okay! The appearance section is lacking quite a bit of detail; it'd be great if you could add to it a bit - talk about things like his build, his facial expressions, his eyes, his arcana symbol, that kind of thing, also if possible add a little more detail to the things you've already described (for example what style of short black hair does he have? Messy? Straight? Parted? etc). And the other thing that needs a little more added to it is the character's history - you haven't said anything about his time on the island since gaining his powers or since joining the house other than that he's distant to the rest of the family (which also isn't explained); that's an important part of their history so if possible an extra paragraph about that would be great. Also you didn't say why he joined the Sword division of the family, so a sentence explaining that would be useful too. Otherwise the character is looking great and I especially love what you've chosen for his secondary powers, it fits incredibly well with The Sun card and I can see a lot of interesting stories arising from it. Also the way he was invited to the family is rather intriguing, he's seeming like a very quirky character haha. As a small note, most people tend to edit their original sign-up post rather than posting a new one each time so you might want to just edit the one you've posted most recently when making these changes and post asking to check it once you're finished with it :) Can't wait to read more about Tobi!

Also in case anyone's interested, I'll submit the IC thread once we have at least 8 characters confirmed as that will be enough to start the story. :)

@Khawill - Love the SU! Only thing I would ask is for slightly more detail in the history - you never really explained why she thought about joining the family, why Luca accepted her, what she was actually doing in the mansion, what made Nova agree to contract her, how she reacted to her abilities, her life within the family so far... Adding another paragraph and editing the previous one would most likely be enough to cover all of this and it'll be accepted :)

K, give me a few bits and I'll see what I can do. Also am I correct in assuming by a "family" this is a type of gang? Or is it a literal family?
