The Oceia Region

Introduction
Hello trainer, and welcome to the Oceia region!

This custom region is based on the real-life region of the world known as Oceania, in particular my home country of Australia. Originally this region was going to be for a fan game I had decided to produce back when I first joined PC in 2012, however I don't have the skills to produce a game and I don't have the time to learn that sort of thing anymore. So for a long time this fell onto the back burner. Thankfully this wonderful new section has given me the opportunity to bring it to life.

"Why Australia?" I'm going to pretend you're asking. Apart from really loving where I live, Australia has a huge range of different geological and ecological features having everything from deserts to rain forests and being the home of some of the worlds most unique lifeforms. It feels to me like it's just begging for a region to be made out of it.

You are now able to join the Oceia region as a trainer or as an ordinary citizen. To join as a trainer please post with your trainer's name, trainer class, a bit of information on your trainer and 1-3 pokemon of your choice (excluding legendaries). To join as a citizen post with your role in the region, name and a bit of info.

Geography & Ecology

The Oceia region is located in the southern quadrant of the pokemon world, and is actually one of the most southern points on the globe. It is a fairly large region, being somewhat larger than most although smaller than the gigantic Kalos and is almost a single solid landmass apart from a few smaller islands and one larger.

The Oceia region is divided into several distinct biomes. The central regions of Oceia are covered by dry plains and dessert sands. During the day this area is one of the hottest places in the world, however at night it becomes bitterly cold. To the west of the region there is predominately open prairies and beaches, however one of the most western points of the region is a large but dormant volcano. The east of Oceia is primarily construed of forest and mountainous terrain. The southern most part of the region is a large island.

As it is largely geographically isolated from the rest of the world, the Oceia region has also given rise to many species of pokemon that are not found anywhere else and has vastly different "rarities" for some other pokemon that other regions are known to.

Looks good so far! I just realised you and BP are neighbors :< I wonder what relationships the regions would have - considering his is basically a rotting mess, and yours is more idealistic.

We don't deal with lesser folk here ;)

On a more serious note I have no idea but I think interacting in general is going to be really fun.

Lore is up!

The Lore and Legends of Oceia

The Legend of the Three Serpents
"Long ago, many thousands of years before man walked the Earth, the world was a chaotic place. Continents were only just being formed, deities fought amongst themselves all around the world and it was the lesser beings, ordinary pokemon, who suffered for it. It was into this chaos that the Old Folk made their first steps, the weakest of life forms - human beings. Yet we were gifted with intelligence and communicative skills beyond most pokemon. We were able to watch and learn from them and about them. It was these talents that eventually allowed pokemon to tamed and trained, allowed us to cooperate with them. The Old Folk were very wise people, they lived in harmony with nature and with pokemon. They were observers and scholars, storytellers that etched our history into the walls of caves. It is from them that this story comes from.

The Old Folk observed a chaotic world. A world in which legends and deities used the Earth as a battlefield as they shaped the world. The world was scarred and it was hurting and the weak suffered for the actions of the mighty. It was then that the Old Folk saw something amazing; from the Ocean, the dirt and the clouds, three great serpents rose. These beings did not join the fights of others, they did not trample on the weak. Instead, they sought to defend those who were not as powerful as they and they defended lesser beings. Still, they could not be everywhere, so they used their immense power to shape the barren lands of Oceia. They carved our valleys and gorges, filled our lakes and rivers and brought seasons to Oceia. Oceia became a paradise and a safe haven, for both pokemon and for mankind.

For many more years, the great serpents ruled over this land and kept it safe. However, one of these creatures held resentment towards the others and to those it defended. It had no true domain like the other two serpents; it did not dwell in the sea nor did it thrive in our great deserts. It merely wandered the skies, taken for granted by those whom it cared for and forgotten compared to the presence of the other serpents. It grew angry, yet it did not shirk its duty for it knew that it lacked the power to combat its brethren.

Things changed however, for the Red Star fell. The Old Folk did not know what this was, but they saw and documented the effect it had on the third serpent. Out of spite and jealousy, the serpent claimed the red star for itself and hid it away. It finally had something the others didn't. The serpent begun to spent all of its time guarding its precious star, not noticing as it begun to change due to the star's mysterious power. As the serpent jealously protected its star, its brethren slowly begun to notice its absence. They eventually begun to look for the third serpent, however it was far too late by the time they found it. The star had completely changed it from the pure and benevolent creature it had once been.

The first two serpents tried to take the star from the third and destroy it, hoping to return it to its former self, but it responded angrily. It was furious that the one thing it had over the others would be taken from it - that after being snubbed for so long, even after it had not only shaped Oceia but tirelessly defending it for years anyone would dare try to take its one precious thing. The third serpent had grown more powerful than the others under the influence of the Red Star and it attacked them both. Overcome by hatred and pent-up resentment, the third serpent begun to lay waste to the paradise it had helped create. For a long time it fought with the other serpents, who tried hard to defend Oceia and soon enough it was defeated, for even with its new power it could not overcome the combined might of the other two. Not wishing to end the pained existence of their former companion, the other two serpents destroyed the red star and forced the third serpent into a deep slumber hidden away where nobody should ever find it.

The remaining serpents then looked upon Oceia, and saw the destruction they had wrought in their conflict. It was then that they discovered that great power has an unbalancing effect on the world, even when it is benevolent and only seeks to defend. They worked to restore Oceia to what it once was and then they sent themselves into a deep slumber, leaving Oceia to continue on in harmony.

This is the legend of Oceia's creation and it is this legend that spiked my curiosity in these mysterious serpents. Most legends are routed in some sort of historic truth and I long to uncover what that truth is."
-Zayne Alta, an Oceain researcher, retelling the legend of the region's creation and explaining his research.

I love the fakemon, the art looks so good. I'm happy to see a platypus Pokémon, about the only thing the regular Pokémon lack. Very interesting to see how Firazor has Overgrow as its ability. :P

I take it the serpents mentioned in the myths are three of the Pokémon in bold at the end of your PokéDex. I can't wait to see more stories appear. (You implied you had many planned.)

Well, I really like your region. It's very interesting that you created this region based on Oceania! It's very similiar to it. I love your fakemons as well ^^ Especially Duxaven (I really liked the design) and Vandalina (Bug and fairy!Interesting...)
And OMG ... The Legend Of The Three Serpents! *-* I really really loved it ^^ very very interesting! I hope you have more stories and legends for the Oceia Region!
If you continue working, this region will be great !

In the sky above the city of Velia, a large winged shadow did appear. Soaring over the large bridge a man with striking red hair and pokéballs around his neck did ride into the Oceia region with a wide grin and a roaring chuckle that would spread throughout the land below him... and startle some flying pokémon down below. His steed? A Mega-Pidgeot, majestic and brilliant. Mega pokémon weren't as uncommon in Dúlra as perhaps they might have been in other regions. Though this man was not so sure as to the position of Oceia in this regard.

This man was named Ardan, called so for an ancient hero of Dúlra's past. In this day and age however, he saw himself as something far less lavish. The Champion of Dúlra had chosen him to be an important politician and lawman as the region of Dúlra began to branch out and interact with it's fellow nations some two years ago. Today, Ardan found himself with one of the greatest honors in his eyes, that any of his countrymen could have been assigned.

He was now arriving in another region, the region Oceia to serve as the first out of region ambassador, representing Dúlra in another land entirely and hopefully helping to form a firm and honest bond between his home and its new allies.

From above he saw the construction work, as the champion had informed him where it would be. The building was an oddity, yet quite pleasant to view in it's own right. A large structure, crafted from the durable basalt of Dúlra... it was dark in colour and a fine representation of his homes patron legend as a result. The actual design of the building was made to fit in with the surrounding landscapes, yet it was further differentiated still by panels upon the walls that bore sigils designed around the Dúlra regions unique unknown.

Ardan knew that some of his countrymen would disagree with this amalgamation of culture, but he himself found it quite pleasant.

As he landed his Pidgeot reverted to its normal form and with an understanding nod it flew to the sky above. A young boy, with fear in his face, proceeded to run from his Mothers side to Ardan, his read hair billowing in the breeze.

"Mister! Mister! Your pokémon's running away! You need to return it quick or he might get hurt!"

Ardan let out a hearty chuckle at that, the idea of "pokéballs" still one that downright baffled him. Patting the child he spoke, with a lilting accent common to Dúlra.

"Don't you worry lad, y'see my friend Pidgeot has no pokéball of his own. He's my friend and when I need him I must only whistle as loud as I can. He'll come to me when I do, without fail."

With awe in his eyes the boy looked to ask a question, but Ardan simply hadn't the time. Ruffling the boys hair he sent him back to his now smiling Mother and turned towards the Dúlran Embassy. It was all but finished and more than ready to be inhabited but for it's final touches.

It was certainly different from his home, but Ardan was pleased to be there. He would be a representative for his home, his family and his friends.

Through him, a bond between Oceia and Dúlra would be forged... alongside those sigils in the sturdy black basalt.

NEWS

Spoiler: Embassies
Embassies
The Dúlran embassy in the city of Velia has now opened and an Oceian embassy will soon open somewhere in Dúlra. This signifies the beginning of a political and commercial alliance between the two regions and marks the first step towards international diplomatic growth for both areas.

What do these embassies entail? Only time will tell the full ramifications of this new political growth but you can be sure that you will see these regions gradually begin to strengthen their bonds with trade, events and to influence each others' cultures.

Other embassies may open in the future.

Spoiler: Currency
Currency
The region of Oceia is soon going to be adopting its own currency system. You will be able to earn currency through things such as regular contribution and events and will be able to use it to expand your team, buy evolutionary items and increase your status within the region of Oceia. The Oceian government however has been indecisive about the name of the currency and so it has been decided that whoever submits the best idea for a name will receive a monetary grant of rather significant size.

Spoiler: Oceia National Bank
The National Bank is open!
The construction of the new Oceia National Bank HQ located in Velia City has finally been completed and along with it a total overhaul to the Oceia Region's currency. This new system has created many opportunities for the average Oceian to earn money whilst causing a far more efficient reorganisation of our economy. You can learn more about this here.

Diplomacy Between Ceriah and Oceia
After a good forty years serving as the Oceian ambassador in Ceriah, Jim Montgomery has retired at the age of eighty leaving a position open for a new Oceian ambassador in our northern neighbour region. In related news, the Cerian embassy here in Oceia is undergoing renovations and will be unable to house an politicians during this time even as we commemorate years of healthy trade between our two nations.

A Casino in Oceia?!
After a many years of gambling being illegal in Oceia, the Oceian parliament has overturned the longterm ban in a controversial political move in a bid to further boost the region's economy. Construction has since begun on the first Oceian casino in many years, the building being located in Cignia City.

Cities and Landmarks of Oceia

On the Names of Oceia's Locations
"The gems in the ground mirror those that dot our skies. It's because of this that Oceia's landmarks are named for the earthly wealth from whence they came, and its cities are named for the stars in the heavens towards which they reach."
-Nakuzami, 2015

Spoiler: Towns and Cities
Spoiler: Capricus Town
Capricus Town
Capricus Town is a small beachside location in Oceia's North West and is located not far from the dormant volcano Mt. Jaspa and the site that will eventually house the new Oceia League HQ and E4 Chambers. The town is small but pleasant to look at with strong but wooden houses resting quite close to the water's edge surrounded by golden sands. As tiny as it is, this location lacks a proper pokecentre or pokemart, but it does have one landmark: an old stone lighthouse that doubles as a storm shelter during cyclone season.

It is likely that the eventual opening of the new Oceia League HQ to the north of the town will result in it expanding considerably. Many of the towns older residents are displeased by this idea.

Spoiler: Virgol Town
Virgol Town
In the shadow of Mt. Jaspa, not too far to the south of Capricus Town, lies the slightly larger town of Virgol. Virgol exists as a trading post between Circin City and the smaller towns of Capricus Town and Libora and also serves as a useful resting place for travellers heading to either. Due to this, Virgol Town is quite well travelled despite its size and has both a pokecentre and pokemart.

Spoiler: Circin City
Circin City
Circin City is located south of Virgol town and is the largest city in the west of Oceia (third largest overall). Circin has a simple aesthetic with neat streets and simply designed buildings that gives it a very homely atmosphere. The area around the city is primarily grass and bushland, however to the south east on the way to Aquilus Town, forest is encountered. Circin city is the location of the Oceia league's bug-typed gym.

Notable Locations in Circin City
  • Circin National Park - At the heart of Circin City lies a large section of parkland that serves not only as a pleasant destination for locals and tourists to enjoy but also as a prime location to capture bug-typed pokemon and participate in bug-catching contests.
  • Pokemon Lab - A leading research facility in Oceia, this lab is one of two notable pokemon labs in Oceia and is responsible for providing Oceia's traditional starters to new trainers. The academic focus of this lab is study on pokemons influence on the world and on ecology.
  • Circin City Gym - The region's bug-typed gym. This gym is fairly simple although the battlefield has been designed to incorporate elements of typical bug-typed habitats.

Spoiler: Aquilus Town
Aquilus Town
To the south-east of Circin City lies the relatively large town of Aquilus. Aquilus Town sits in a flat landscape with forest to the north-west and open plains/sparse bushland surrounding it. From a high point in Aquilus city you can see for many miles in almost every direction. Aquilus Town houses a flying-typed gym.

Notable Locations in Aquilus Town
  • Aquilus Lookout - A large tower on the edge of Aquilus. The tower is used by both locales and passing tourists to observe the landscape and wild pokemon around the town. It is particularly popular among bird watchers.
  • Aquilus Town Gym - Appearing to be an ordinary gym at first, the building is catered extremely well to fit flying-types. During battles a retractable roof can be opened and the battlefield raised to allow flying combatants access to the open air.

Spoiler: Cassiope Town
Cassiope Town
East of Aquilus Town and north-west of Piktrik City lies the small farming community of Cassiope Town. This small locale has very little to note at the town's interior, with only a small pokemon centre and a small store as opposed to a full-fledged pokemart. Around the edge of the town however, lie several large farms including the Farm Stay Safari Zone.

Notable Locations in Cassiope Town
  • Farm Stay Safari Zone - Not only is this the largest working farm in he Oceia Region, but also the only thing resembling a tourist attraction in Cassiope Town. Here tourists can not only get a taste of life on a big Oceian farm, but are welcome to catch some of the pokemon found here also.

Spoiler: Piktrik City
Piktrik City
Piktrik City is the fourth largest of Oceia's cities and is located to the south-east of Cassiope Town and north north-west of Cignia City. Piktrik is the artistic hub of the Oceia region, being home to some of the region's finest musicians, poets and artisans as well as the most talented architects. Indeed, whilst Piktrik does not possess the draws of the other nearby cities it is by far the most beautiful to travel through. Buildings in Piktrik are designed and crafted with incompatible elegance, the pinnacle of which being the Piktrik church. As the artistic hub of Oceia, Piktrik is unsurprisingly home to the regions only dedicated contest hall. In addition to these artistic areas of note, Piktrik City is also home to the dark-typed gym of the region and houses the regions largest cemetery.

Notable Locations in Piktrik City
  • Memorial Park - Memorial Park is the largest cemetery in Oceia, serving as the final resting place for both people and pokemon The cemetery is an expanse of perfectly manicured lawns and hedges, adorned with gorgeous flowers and dotted with beautiful white marble tombs. Perhaps attracted to the sombre area, many Ghost and Dark pokemon call Memorial Park home.
  • Piktrik Contest Hall - A large and historical indoor amphitheatre, the building is notable for it's perfect dome shape and ornate architecture. Contests are frequently held in this hall and more often than not, so is the Oceia region's Grand Festival.
  • Piktrik Church - A pristine marble cathedral located near Memorial Park, this building is considered the pinnacle of architectural brilliance and the beauty of its elegant spires and stained-glass windows and the crisp, clear toll of its bell attract the eyes and ears of all who enter the city.
  • Art Gallery - The famous Oceia National Art Gallery houses paintings and sculptures of the highs quality whilst the square before it is home to buskers and street performers. This is a must see place for all who visit the city.
  • Piktrik City Gym - A simple but not unappealing building close to the centre of Piktrik City houses the official dark-typed gym of the area. The inside of the gym is quite dark with a red carpet winding through a marble labyrinth. The labyrinth serves as a particularly interesting battlefield.

Spoiler: Cignia City
Cignia City
In the south-east of Oceia sits a bustling mass of skyscrapers and busy streets, Cignia City - the largest city in the region. Cignia is enormous, far larger than the other cities of the region, and is an economic and scientific hub where many cultures mix and mingle. One could easily get lost in this city, which is why a lot of care has been taken in creating a quality public transport system utilising trams so locals and tourists alike can easily visit the various shops, markets and restaurants that can be found within the city. Cignia is also the location of the Oceia region's normal-typed gym.

Notable Locations in Cignia City
  • Cignia City Department Store - The largest of Cignia City's many shopping venus, this is the place to go for almost all your shopping needs. Occupying a huge premises your basic trainer items such as pokeballs and potions as well as TMs and Battle Items can be found in this store as well as clothing, electronics and furniture.
  • Cignia Museum - Cignia Museum is world famous for the amazing fossils, rocks and artefacts displayed as well as for its attachment to a functioning high-tech pokemon lab in which scientists of many fields study.
  • Pokemon Lab - Attached to the Cignia Museum, this lab dwarves the lab in Circin City and is the place of work for hundreds of scientists working in many different fields.
  • The Pokeball Botique - A store selling rare and specialised varieties of pokeballs.
  • Cignia Market - A large outdoor market that sells several different types of goods at a far cheaper rate than the big shopping chains.
  • The Old Theatre - One of the last oldest buildings in Cignia, this building is now rarely used but sits as a testament to a simpler time.
[*]Cignia City Gym - Easily mistaken for a cooperate building or a store, a tall building in the city is home to the normal-typed gym of Oceia. Inside a series of elevators connect to smaller rooms with the large major battlefield taking up the top two floors.[/list]

Spoiler: Velia City
Velia City
Velia City is the capital of the Oceia region and is the second-largest city in the region. Located in the east of the region, Velia sits on the edge of a grand cove with an enormous bridge being the cities south-western entrance across the cove. To the north of Velia City lies the largest mountain range in Oceia. Oceia is also home to one of the region's eight gyms, this particular gym specialising in the Poison type.

Notable Locations in Velia City
  • Unity Bridge - The enormous and intricately designed bridge that allows for entry to Velia city from across the cove it sits on.
  • Velia Port - The Velia half of the cove has since become a bustling port in which large trading vessels and cruise liners are frequently docked.
  • The Dulran Embassy - The recently completed Dulran embassy is a political link to the far-off region of Dulra and exists to foster a friendly political and commercial alliance. The building is notable for its Dulran architecture being made of black basalt and covered in Dulran glyphs. Aldan the ambassador for the region can usually be found there.
  • Velia City Gym - This gym specialises in poison pokemon and represents harmony between nature and civilisation. Whilst it appears to be a normal building on the outside, the interior is reminiscent of a swamp or marshland.

Spoiler: Lacertal Town
Lacertal Town
Lacertal Town is a small town at the foot of a mountain range and is located to the north of Velia City. Lacertal Town is quite pristine and rustic in its appearance and has little of note to its name aside from its proximity to the mountains.

Spoiler: Cetulus City
Cetulus City
Cetulus City is the lone city on the smaller landmass to the west of Cignia City. Located on a small island in the centre of an enormous lake, Cetulus is a stunning sight to behold. Carefully constructed to withstand flooding, Cetulus City features a state of the art drainage system in which water overflowing into the city from the lake is directed back into the lake preventing damage occurring the city. Those living in Cetulus are surrounded by natural beauty in the shimmering lake, not-so-distant ocean, woodlands and to the west a wide emerald expanse of practically untouched rainforest lying just across a small expanse of ocean. With all this water around, it is probably not surprising that this is the location of Oceia's water-typed gym.

Notable Locations in Cetulus City
  • Cetulus Lake Tours - Here you can rent a boat with a glass viewing floor, allowing you to enjoy the lake whilst watching as water pokemon swim below you.
  • Cetulus City Gym - The interior of this gym contains an enormous pool dotted in floating islets. It's the perfect arena when it comes to providing water pokemon with ease of moment and an environmental advantage.

Spoiler: Fornal Town
Fornal Town
Fornal Town is small rural community in a unique biome where mountains are not far to the north-east whilst to the west an enormous desert spreads out. The environment in Fornal is somewhat savannah-like and marks the shift from mountain land into desert terrain. There is little of note in Fornal Town in terms of attractions or employ. Many residents commute the long journey across the desert to Doradon City for work.

Spoiler: Doradon City
Doradon City
Doradon City is the smallest of the full-fledged cities in Oceia and is located slightly north of the regions centre in the middle of a enormous desert. Citizen's of Doradon have adapted to the harsh life of the desert well, resulting in the unique trait of many of the cities buildings actually being at least partially underground. This provides protection from the intense heat and from sandstorms and a system of tunnels allows residents to travel between many locations without having to spend too much time above ground. Doradon's economy is based primarily on the mining of various ores, fossils and evolutionary stones. It is perhaps not surprising that this town also houses the region's ground-typed gym.

Notable Locations in Doradon City
  • The Doradon Tunnels/Sub-Terranian Buildings - Those who are new to the city often find the underground infrastructure of Doradon to be a source of much wonder and amusement.
  • Doradon City Gym - Located below ground, this gym is not located inside a building but rather inside a renovated man-made tunnel. The battlefield is reminiscent of a large underground cavern but has a sandy, desert-like battlefield.

MESSAGE

A large, spherical object washes up onto a beach in Oceia, and as soon as it detects land, it activates, a small hole opening up inside of it, projecting a hologram for all in the area to see.

It was a hologram of a large, middle aged man, with a shiny bald head, and a curly gray mustache. He spoke in a deep, gravelly voice.

"Hello to you, citizens of Oceia! Please deliver this message to your superiors. Press the blue button to deactivate this device. Until then, it will replay for your convenience.

It has come to Af-Large's concern that the waste from our factories is heading towards your shores. I assure you, this is not a problem! The waste is almost completely benign, besides a minor purple tint to the water. If however you wish to rid your water of this waste, Af-Large is willing to sell to you an Af-Large Water Purifier for a very small price.

Here's to a better relationship,

Mr. Large
