Gen 3 introduces two champions of the Hoenn region: Pokemon Champion Steven, who uses fossil & steel pokemon, and on Pokemon Emerald, the pokemon Champion is Wallace, how gave his former position as the 8th gym leader to Juan.

If you've faced these two guys, you'll probably have your own experience with them: Steven can be taken down with fire moves, but he's also pretty tricky; his Claydol can set up screens to keep his other pokemon safe, while his Cradily is really bulky to take down in a clean hit. OR/AS, his Metagross can Mega-evolve, which makes it faster & stronger, so you'll have to be on your toes for that!

Wallace, well, you'll know that he changed his team a bit prior of him being a Champion from a Gym Leader, so while your tactics might of changed, you can still exploit his weakness pretty easily with electric and grass moves. His Milotic is tough on the bulky side, but can be taken down.

Knowing all this, which champion do you prefer to battle? Why? Which one was more of a challenge for you?

Personally, they are both quite challenging in my opinion- but I do have fun building teams to prepare for them. Each champion has an aspect about them that's more challenging than the other. I usually have a tough time battling Steven's fossil Pokemon, and sometimes Metagross does put up a good fight if my fire type is already down. But I do have to tip my hat to Wallace, with the wide variety of dual typed water Pokemon he has, he's sometimes hard to prepare for. He can pull a W on me if he manages to disrupt my battle strategy. Milotic is one tough customer!

Although I voted Steven, I can at least appreciate Wallace because his character is more regal and grandiose to me. But I haven't done as many playthroughs of Emerald that were casual, so yeah, Steven has proven to be more for me to take.

Steven till death do us part

He's more challenging and actually feels like Champion material. Wallace really does feel like what he is, a placeholder. BUT if Wallace never took over for Steven then we never would of been introduced to Juan who is my favorite Hoenn gym leader so sometimes you gotta make sacrifices. I think both Steven and Wallace have good character development though and they're both likable from my standpoint.

I like both of these fellows, but if I were to choose one over another, I'd probably go with Steven.

There wasn't much steel-type specialists out there when generation three was still an ongoing thing, which, I feel, is one thing that had made him stand out so much in my eyes. On top of this, his looks seemed to have had complemented him pretty well; generally, he is cool-minded and open, and his appearance represented that.

As far as battling is concerned, he wasn't too difficult to go up against, luckily, but he wasn't too easy, either; somewhere in-between. I definitely wasn't able to defeat Steven first time I had went up against the guy; it took me about three to four tries to finally get this done. Even then, I don't have to put much reliance on recovery items like I had to while having matches against other champions in the past.

I prefer Steven, because he uses a much more varied team. Not all his Pokémon share one type, but they are still connected to each other being all ancientlike Pokémon. When challenging Wallace, I thought: "Water, again?" The final Gym and Elite Four are quite close to each other. I like some more variation.

Personally, I like Wallace, even though it took me shorter time to beat Steven and his Metagross, it just is that I have a weak spot for Steel-Types

I prefer Steven. I have a Manectric in almost every playthrough of Gen 3 so I can kill Wallace anytime.

Oh god, Steven by far. He has plenty more resistance and is well-rounded altogether despite being a steel-type trainer primarily - I definitely had more trouble battling him than Wallace. Only issue with Wallace was that electric moves didn't affect Whiscash so I had to use something else.. but either way his team was veeery easy to take out.

Steven has that champion "demeanor" to him whereas Wallace felt forced for the sake of giving Emerald more differences in comparison to R/S.

I like both as characters, but I prefer battling Steven. I like how diverse his team is. Wallace just has water types, which isn't a hard type to beat if you got Electric and Grass attacks. Wallace just doesn't fit the champion image for me. I like him though!

I can understand all the love towards Steven, because he does have a strong team but my love of Water-types had to show again so yeah went with Wallace, plus he is fabulous.

I choose Wallace because
He can deal with Blaziken
And Swampert easily. And hoenn region have very few grass type too.(In which shiftry and cradily are useless against water). So really good team is needed. I agree that emerald have many electric type through... But you can take down Steven's whole team with pokemon like shedinja

As much as I love the Water-type, I have to pick Steven. As he looks cool among them and he was the one who gave me a challenge!
