Three Before First Challenge

The idea is simple, your team of Pokemon can only consist of Pokemon that can be caught before the first gym! This restricts you to somewhat weaker Pokemon than you may be used to, thus forcing you to think creatively with your team of misfits. You may just discover how useful Butterfree can be with a 100% accurate Toxic and Sleep Powder! Or you may realize how a Dunsparce in the original Gold can be an insanely powerful ally!

e8tu.png

The rules:

  • Your team must consist of at least three Pokemon
  • HM Slaves are allowed, but cannot be used in battle.
  • Your first three party members must be caught in the areas before the first gym. However, after that you may catch other Pokemon later on, so long as they are available in the areas before the first gym. (This includes their evolved forms) So for example if I started LeafGreen with Squirtle, Caterpie and Weedle, I would be allowed to catch a Pidgey at Route 3, or a Raticate at the Pokemon Mansion, or a Primeape at Victory Road, etc. This applies to all games.
  • You are not allowed to trade Pokemon from other cartridges into your game. However, it is okay to use real life trades to evolve Pokemon such as Haunter and Onix.
  • Pokemon such as Skitty in Ruby/Sapphire and Riolu in Black/White 2 are allowed since they are obtainable before you are REQUIRED to fight the first gym.
  • The in-game trade for Onix in Johto is allowed.
  • The challenge is considered over when you see the end credits for the first time. This includes Johto's elite four, and Ghetis at the end of Black 1/White 1.

Update on my quest #1

  • Picked Squirtle as my starter as I'll need him for Gary's Arcanine at the elite four. Nicknamed it "Turtle"
  • Devilered Oak's Parcel and obtained the Pokedex.
  • Was shown how to catch a Weedle by some old man who afterwords shoved a TV into my arms.
*Ridiculous things I'm carrying: 1*

  • Captured a level 5 Weedle in Viridian Forest with a Mild nature. (The worst possible nature Beedrill could have)
  • Caught a much better level 5 Weedle, and ditched my old one. Nicknamed it "Bee"
  • Caught a Level 5 Caterpie, and nicknamed it "Butterfly". Would have rather had a female one to use Attract at the elite four, but got annoyed looking for a high leveled female Caterpie. I might end up really regretting that. : <
  • Caterpie and Weedle evolved into Metapod and Kakuna!
  • Fought my way through Viridian Forest, and arrived in Pewter City.
  • Used the pathetic fight with Brock as an opportunity to give Metapod and Kakuna some free exp. Poor Brock will always be a joke.
  • On the way to Mt. Moon, Metapod and Kakuna both evolved!
  • Slowly traveled through Mt. Moon, evolving Squirtle along the way.
  • Obtained a fossil of a creature that evolves into a monster with scythes for hands that only a crazed man on an island in a laboratory somewhere can resurrect using magical science.
*Ridiculous things I'm carrying: 2*

  • Left Mt. Moon and taught Turtle Mega Punch.
  • Beat up Gary and he gave me another magical science spy gear machine that automatically detects and records when people are talking about certain celebrities, and even categorizes them!
*Ridiculous things I'm carrying: 3*

  • Fought across Nugget Bridge, and rescued Bill from his bizarre transporter accident. (By the way, how did he originally activate the machine to cause this if he needed me to turn the thing on? Made more sense in Pokemon Adventures)
  • Went and fought the lovely Firered/LeafGreen version of Misty. ^__^ Beedrill won no problem with Twineedle.
  • Taught Turtle Water Pulse.
  • Fought a bunch of trainers and arrived in Vermilion City.
  • Obtained the vs Seeker.
  • Fought everyone on board the SS. Anne and beat up Gary once again.
  • Obtained the Cut HM, and caught a Spearow to trade for Farfetch'd to be used as my usual fly/cut slave.
  • Fought Surge with Butterfree and Beedrill and won thanks to Compoundeyes' 100% accurate sleep powder/poison powder, and double team not affecting Butterfree's Confusion until it was too late. Some war hero, my butterfly almost knocked out his whole team. >__>
And now you're caught up to where I left off!

Current Team:
wartortle.png
Lv24 Turtle (male) Relaxed Nature.
Moveset: Tackle, Mega Punch, Bite, Water Pulse

beedrill.png
Lv24 Bee (Male) Serious Nature
Moveset: Poison Sting, Twineedle, Secret Power, Brick Break.

butterfree.png
Lv25 Butterfly (Male) Bashful Nature
Moveset: Thief, Poisonpowder, Sleep Powder, Confusion

- Fought Brock
- I got a new attitude... Or maybe it was a pair of running shoes... Not quite sure which

Update time for Silver

  • Started the game
  • Got my Pokegear
  • Got Petal the Chikorita as my starter
  • Went through Route 29
  • Got the Map Card for my Pokegear in Cherrygrove City
  • Headed up Route 30 to Mr. Pokemon's house
  • Got the egg from Mr. Pokemon and the Pokedex from Oak
  • Dealt with a certain jerk in Cherrygrove on my way back to Elm's lab
  • Returned to New Bark Town
  • Named my rival Ron
  • Got some Poke Balls
  • Went to Dark Cave and caught Bloodwing the Zubat
  • Also went and caught Rockzilla the Geodude in Dark Cave
  • Trained up Bloodwing to Lv. 7, then headed to Sprout Tower in Violet City
  • Took down every trainer in Sprout Tower, then moved on to the gym
  • Destroyed Violet City gym with Rockzilla, especially after he got Rock Throw. Once he got that, everything got destroyed.
  • Made my way to Union Cave
  • Got through Union Cave and reached Azalea Town
  • Took care of Team Rocket in the Slowpoke Well
  • Owned Ron
  • Went and took on Azalea Gym
  • Took down Bugsy by "dropping the rocks" on Scyther
  • Went through Ilex Forest
  • Reached Goldenrod City
  • Went ahead and owned every trainer up to the tree blocking the way towards Ecruteak
  • Went back and tackled Goldenrod Gym
  • Beat Whitney after a very long, rage filled battle with her really annoying Miltank
  • Went and killed Sudowoodo since I'm not allowed to use it
  • Reached Ecruteak City
  • Went and took down Ron in the Burned Tower
  • Took on the Kimono Girls, where Bloodwing finally evolved into Golbat
  • Destroyed Morty
  • Went through Glitter Lighthouse in Olivine City
  • Caught a Krabby as an HM slave
  • Surfed all the way to Cianwood and got the medicine
  • Went and took down Chuck
  • Since Bloodwing can't learn Fly in this generation, I had to Surf all the way back to Olivine
  • Went and delivered the medicene to Jasmine
  • Went to Olivine gym and owned Jasmine
  • Headed to Mahogany Town and the Lake of Rage
  • Killed the shiny Gyarados
  • Went to the Rocket Hideout
  • Took down Petrel (He's just a Rocket Executive in G/S/C)
  • Took down Ariana (She's also just a Rocket Executive in Gen 2)
  • Killed the three Electrode
  • On the way back to Goldenrod to buy some TMs, I went and caught a Goldeen as a future Waterfall slave
  • Went back and bought some TMs before going to tackle Mahogany Town's gym
  • Destroyed Mahogany Town's gym and Pryce
  • Returned to Goldenrod again to take care of the Team Rocket problem
  • Owned Petrel...again.
  • Owned Ron
  • Well, to be exact, I swept Ron's team with Rockzilla's Rollout
  • Took care of Team Rocket once and for all
  • Returned to Mahogany and went through the Ice Path
  • Took on Blackthorn City gym, the last Johto gym at last
  • Beat Clair after a difficult battle, but of course, she can't admit defeat and won't give me the badge I rightfully deserve
  • Went to the Dragon's Den and got the Dragon Fang, then finally got my final badge from Clair
  • On the way back to New Bark Town, Bloodwing finally evolved into Crobat
  • Returned to New Bark Town and surfed east into Kanto
  • Went through every trainer in my way on my way to Victory Road
  • Owned Ron for the last time
  • Did all my final preperations such as buying items, healing, and putting all my slaves in the PC
  • Got owned by Will twice, so I went back to Victory Road and trained up the team to Lv. 44
  • Owned Will
  • Swept Koga with Rockzilla
  • Eliminated Bruno with a team effort of Petal and Bloodwing
  • Survived a close call victory against Karen
  • Beat Lance after a long nightmare of a battle

Team Zero (Final)

154.png

Petal (Meganium) Lv. 46 @ Miracle Seed
Final Stats: 141/102/119/96/111/96
Moves: Cut, Body Slam, Razor Leaf, Earthquake

Chikorita is always considered to be the hardest starter choice, and yes, that's true, but I had Bloodwing and Rockzilla on my team to deal with the annoying gym leaders. Petal did help a bit, but I feel like Bloodwing or Rockzilla are better candidates for MVP. Sadly, Petal is my LVP for this run. I really couldn't find too many good uses for Petal in battles because Team Rocket had mostly Poison types.

169.png

Bloodwing (Crobat) Lv. 46 @ Amulet Coin
Final Stats: 148/109/92/85/94/148
Moves: Wing Attack, Return, Bite, Confuse Ray

Bloodwing was pretty much the Confuse Ray spammer and speed demon of the team. I've used a Crobat before, but in SoulSilver, so it was easier to raise then. Getting Bloodwing trained up early on was a misery since all he had was Leech Life, and even after I got Supersonic, it really didn't help much at all. Although, his high speed really helped in the long run, especially after he finally got Wing Attack in the Rocket Hideout. Many Grass types died that day, but I can't exactly say that Bloodwing was the MVP either. He's pretty much the middle man.

75.png

Rockzilla (Graveler) Lv. 47 @ Quick Claw
Final Stats: 123/117/126/70/70/55
Moves: Rollout, Earthquake, Rock Throw, Mud-Slap

Despite being unable to evolve him into Golem, Rockzilla was a beast in general. Even as a Geodude, he was taking things out like a pro with Rock Throw, and even with Magnitude once he got it. Rockzilla got the most battling action out of the whole team, but that's mostly because there was so much I could use him for, especially in the battle with Whitney and her annoying Miltank. Rockzilla is the MVP of my team without a doubt, and I know I'll be coming back to using a Graveler in a future challenge, but most likely for Monotype.

Anyway, now that I'm done with Silver, it's time to move on to another game. I'm feeling like Yellow Version this time around.

Username: KoboraX

Additional Restrictions: Pikachu must stay in the party at all times, Only one HM slave in my party at a time, and I can't use anything better than Hyper Potions, so that means no Full Restores or Max Potions

I have a question... You said the first 3 must be caught before the 1st gym. So I can catch 2 others after the first gym? Or can I only use those 3 for battling?

You must catch your first three in the beginning areas, but after that you may catch Pokemon in other areas, so long as they are Pokemon that are available in the first part of the game. So if you started LeafGreen with Squirtle, Pidgey, and Caterpie, you could catch a raticate at Pokemon mansion, or a Primeape in victory road since they're evolved forms of Pokemon you could have caught before the first gym.

Hope that cleared things up. : )

Update #1:

  • I woke up, wanting to explore the world outside of Pallet Town. But some old man in a lab coat stopped me from continuing my journey, blabbering about how "there are wild Pokemon in tall grass!"
  • I went back to the old man's (Prof. Oak) Pokemon lab and obtained a Pikachu. My next door neighbor Gary was there, too, and he got an adorable Eevee from the Prof. I nicknamed my Pikachu "Lightning"
  • Gary challenged me to a battle and was swept away by Pikachu's electric shock. After the battle, my Pikachu decided to pop out it's Pokeball - what? Prof. Oak said that some Pokemon liked being outside of their Pokeball rather than in it.
  • I continued through to the next city, battling wild Pokemon as I went. Soon, I got to Viridian City and started to explore it. I ended up going into the Mart and the clerk asked me to deliver Oak a parcel (a pizza maybe ^_^)
  • I gave Oak his pizza parcel and in return he gave Gary and I a Pokedex. How cool! I then got a Town Map from Gary's sister, even though he told me she wouldnt ^^
  • I continued to Viridian City, trying to go through Viridian Forest, but another old man stopped me from continuing on. He showed me how to catch wild Pokemon (even though I already knew how :P)
  • In Viridian Forest, I caught a lvl 6 Caterpie and nicknamed it Beauty. I then went back to Viridian City with my new Caterpie to catch a lvl 3 Pidgey (Nutmeg). Then, I battled trainers in Viridian Forest and raised all my Pokemon to lvl 12 - Beauty evolved into not only a Metapod, but a Butterfree, too!
  • I got into Pewter City and went straight to the Gym, battling the Jr. Trainer and Brock with my Butterfree's Confusion. Brock gave me the BoulderBadge and a TM to teach to one of my Pokemon.

Current Team:
gby025.gif
Lightning the Pikachu (lvl 12)
Moveset: Thundershock, Quick Attack, Tail Whip, Thunder Wave

gby012.gif
Beauty the ButterFree (lvl 13)
Moveset: Tackle, Poison Powder, Harder, Confusion

gby016.gif
Nutmeg the Pidgey (lvl 12)
Moveset: Gust, Sand Attack, Quick Attack
