when i resize pictures for a sprite like you did for the bayleef, it always comes out blurry or just unusable. Is there a criteria?

You can use MS Paint to resize without having the colors blend into each other. Lots of image editing programs will try to keep the overall image as close looking to the original as possible which is why it gets a little blurry. Paint is much more basic and simply chooses one pixel over another when you shrink an image.

If you have the newer paint, then it may come out blurry if you don't select the sprite and then resize it. I'm not sure why, it just does that.

It comes out best if you resize by full measures. 50% is half size, 25% is half of that, etc.; if your image is too small, that could cause the blurriness you're referring to when you make it even smaller.

My first (only) trainer sprite:


I can already tell that the main problem is going to be the shading. The PokeBall arm is taken from Red (HGSS) and the hat is taken from Red (JP Green). Suggestions?

I'm gonna give trainer spriting a try. I'm currently only a concept artist, for August Emerald.
But I think it'd be nice to have some other stuff to do too. This guide will really help me at that. When I've made my first trainer, I'll post it here. After that I'm gonna give Fakémon spriting a try too! Boy, I'm just like Greed from Full Metal Alchemist... GIMME! GIMME! GIMME!

Shawn, your Pokemon sprites are pretty good, but you should consider modifying the shape and color of the ridges on the head... they look unchanged from the base. Also, they're not aligned with the head; they seem to start above the right eye. As for your trainer sprites, you should try to modify them so that they'll look less like the sprites you based them on.

ProdigyX, I just draw lines from the foot circles to the pelvis circle, then adjust them to match the shape of the pants or legs I have in mind.

How's this for a transparentizing tut on GIMP?

Spoiler:
1)
Okay, so I filled in my worksheet in blue, and recolored a Nintetales, which is now pretty. Step 1 is to select around the Nintetales and hit Ctrl+C, or Copy.

2) Open up GIMP, hit Ctrl+V, or Paste, and it should look like this now.


3) Click Layer>Transparency>Add Alpha channel, like in he picture.


4) Now click this little tool button. The Select By Color Tool.

Then click the blue and press Del or delete.

5) It looks a bit like this now.

:/ I don't like that fuzzy outline, so now click Select>None, like in the pic


6)Now click Image>Autocrop to get rid of all that unnecessary transparent space.


7) It should now look like this

8 ) Click File>Save As and name your file and then write .png
If you don't, the quality will get screwed up.



Save it where you want.

9) Now, upload it onto a image hosting site, like Iaza, Photobucket, Tinypic etc.

10) Copy the BBCode URL it gave you and paste it into the text box of the forums.

11) When you hit Preview/Submit, it looks like this

:D Well done, you transparentized a sprite on GIMP :D


Made it in one try.

Cobalt'Scizor, don't most programs have a one-click "replace selected color with transparent opacity" tool?

qaz, I don't really have any advice... Just experiment, and make sure that the facial features are properly oriented with the head.

WoW nice tutorials so well organised it is realy a great help.
I mean, I'm still a rookie spriter but I managed to create the trainer in my avatar myself.

Oh and I wantet to ask for the Overworld objekts since thats something I realy need help with.

I re-did my trainer sprite from earlier, because it felt a little (lot) flat to me. Also, it's more from scratch than then the last one was. So, here's take 2:

I also made an (obvious recolor of Red's OW sprite) OW for this trainer sprite, which I will use until I can figure out HOW to make my guy's OW NOT look like Red's:


EDIT2: Moved the arm closer to the body (it looked weird). Current version is in my avatar. BTW, do you have any plans on teaching how to do those VS. (eyecatch) sprites?

Spriting and pixel art in Pokemon Games is extra easy now that the Nameless Sprite Editor came out... though it would be nice to get some pointers on making 'Level Transition Images' Those special images in FR/LG that you see giving a hint on the next area you're going into, like when you enter Pokemon Tower, or Viridian Forest...

I can make pixel art showing a landscape, I'm just not good at nintendo style...

What you're talking about is known in the film industry as an "establishing shot". Think of how on tv they'll show a brief shot of the outside of a building to establish where the setting is, before cutting to the characters. That's actually one of the tutorials I'm "working on right now". It's about half done, and has been for nearly year, but my time's been occupied by other things. I really need to get these things finished...
