What is the saddest scene in an anime you have ever seen? I'd say list about 3 in order from saddest to least sad. If giving a reason please put in spoilers.
1. Clannad: After Story
Spoiler:
The whole series was fine but then Nagisa died and he just ignored Ushio. Then even when he got her back she died not to long after.

Even the soundtrack from Clannad will bring on the tears

2. Angel Beats
This one was the whole reason I watched Clannad, but that's not what made it sad. Even though it was hilarious for the most part there were some scenes
Spoiler:
I'm talking about Ep. 2 when Yuri tells her childhood story, then Ep. 3 when Iwasawa disappears. Then when Yui disappears, and finally the end where Kanadae disappears
The worst part is that this one is only 13 episodes, making it short (still a great anime)

3. XXXholic (the xxx pretty much means -insert-holic)
Okay this is my favorite anime, it is interesting and funny. It also made me think about things. But there are two specific scenes that makes me a bit sad
Spoiler:
When that spirit lady at the end acts like a mother to Watanuki and almost kills him (by accident) because she wants a son and he wants a mother (who died when he was younger) Then there's the OVA where it shows Watanuki as a kid and he makes a friend who can see spirits also. But he disappears turning out to be a spirit of a child who died there

I'm curious to see what you guys think.

I actually hate most forms of anime but here are some moments which I found genuinely sad. You can put anime movies in here and not just shows, right? In no particular order...

1: Kimba the White Lion
Spoiler:
The death of Kimba's mother and father, mother appears in the stars guiding him back home

2. Ringing Bell (The Ringing Bell of Chirin)
Spoiler:
The ending, Chirin defends the other sheep but wanders away to the mountain. Also the death of his mother.

3. Spirited Away
Spoiler:
It wasn't really all that sad but the ending of this movie was like... moving XD It was oddly heartbreaking at the very end when Chihiro and her family exit the park.

That's all I can think of right now

Yeah movies count, I've never seen the other two but Spirited Away was a great movie and I love the American made animes like it. Oddly enough I was trying to remember the name of that specific one a few days ago.

I chose 4 sad moments.

Another

Spoiler:
A lot of deaths were pretty sad in this anime... Particularly Izumi's, who was my favourite female character. I really thought she wouldn't die... Poor Teshi'.

Clannad

Spoiler:
Nagisa... Ushio... D': Poor Okazaki... I cried so much in this anime. The two characters were so engaging ! Fortunately there was a happy ending, otherwise it would have disquieted me for weeks x)

Tasogare Otome x Amnesia

Spoiler:
The end... When Yuko leaves... The soundtrack is just gorgeous, and make the moment even more sad but beautiful.

Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni

Spoiler:
We're used to main character's deaths in this anime, so usually they don't affect us. But in the next to last world, the moment where Takano killed them all was pretty sad. We were so much hoping a good ending this time, that it was moving

I think elfen lied had some sad moments but I really just didn't care as much when Lucy died, I mean even with her history I saw a psychopath lol. Though the whole show was a downer

I'm going to be that one and say Wolf's Rain. I watched it a few years ago and it was a pretty big tearjerker for me.

But also, Grave of the Fireflies. Oh man, that movie.

My Neighbor Totoro can be pretty depressing when you read about urban legends and such regarding it.

I wonder, what is the real ending for clannad. I mean the second one is happy and all but it seems like it was put there so people didn't leave the anime with a downer vibe

I'm not going to spoil any specific moments because I swear I'm like the only person who has watched this anime, but... Bokurano has a handful of sad scenes. Highly recommend the anime, if you don't mind an anime that's serious, depressing and doesn't try to pull a happy ending out of its arse to cheer up the audience.

Some of Digimon Tamers was pretty sad, Leomon's death in particular. Especially since afterwards, Jeri, his Tamer, goes all emo and stuff.
