ROLEPLAY OLYMPICS
Survey Thread

The first ever Roleplay Olympics has come to a close! Before I begin I'd like to give a congratulations to all participants and winners and a thank you to all who participated, assisted, and even read the RPOs. Created by the minds of SuperVegeta, Raikiri, and The_Original_Raitan with you all in mind, the RPOs have made a satisfying outcome for it's first year! As encouraging as it is, that's all it is, our first run and now it's up to you all once again to decide the outcome of our games! As you may or may not know, the Roleplay Olympics are an annual event and will not return until next August. That being said, our board room only has 525,600 minutes on the clock to come up with something even better. However, a couple of guys and a graph can only think of so much on their own--we'll need you to help!

Our request is simple as asking, "How did you like the RPOs?" in fact, that's all it is! From the sign-up to the final, accomplished press of the "Post Reply" button, how was your experience? Was it good? Great? So awful you'd rather chew gum off a bear's butt? Whatever it is, don't be shy to say, and don't worry about feelings. We have genetically produced specialists with platinum hearts to take the worst of it.

To make things easier, we've constructed a neat survey to help communicate feelings:

Participants

1. What was your first impression of the RPO's when they were announced?

2. What made you decide your events, decide to become a judge, or both?

3. How was your writing experience? Was it a breeze or did you feel rushed? Word count too short?

4. If we have another RPO, what kind of events would you like to see?

5. How was your Olympic experience as a whole?

6. If we have another RPO, what would you do differently?

Judges

1. How was your judging experience?

2. How do you think the judging process can be done better?

3. Would you have liked to confer with other judges, or did you think keeping your opinions unshared made the judging easier/more honest?

4. If we have another RPO, how would you like judging to change or not to change?

Spectators

1. What was your first impression of the RPOs when they were announced?

2. What stopped you from participating in this year's Roleplay Olympics?

3. What did you think of the organization of the RPOs?

4. If we have another RPO, would you participate in some way?

5. What improvements, changes, or events would you like to see in another RPO? Would this change whether you joined or not?

But wait! Surveys are all fine and dandy, but you're a rebel! You don't want to be tied down by lists! Or maybe you don't like surveys, or maybe what you want to say isn't here. That's okay! The survey is merely made for organization, you can write your opinion in any order or format you choose and add anything you like! Don't even let the survey sections bother you. If you see a question you'd like to answer from another form, then add it in at your leisure. If you're still too shy or have something you don't want to express to public then create a confidential PM to either SuperVegeta, Raikiri, or The_Original_Raitan with your opinions. It would be to our greatest appreciation that you use your time to help us improve and many enthusiastic thanks come your way.

The only thing you must hold yourself to is to remember that this is a survey thread and a friendly RP site. This thread is only for posts to the survey, if you'd like to discuss take it into the RPD or amongst yourselves through PM/VM. If you'd like to change anything to your survey, please edit your original post or send it to SuperVegeta in a PM. We are all entitled to our opinions and we all have our disagreements. While doing your survey do not discount others or imply any change that would require the exclusion of other participants. If you must use someone as an example do not mention their name or go into detail to help highlight who said person was.

Once again, thank you for participating, spectating, and rating the RPOs! Let's hope to do this another time next year!

How was your writing experience? Was it a breeze or did you feel rushed? Word count too short?

I actually think the word count was good, it kept things getting out of hand and made people write concisely, and without blabbering on too much!

If we have another RPO, what kind of events would you like to see?

I liked the Escape category, I think there should be another new 'situation' roleplay for people to run with. It was cool to see how people took it in different directions.

If we have another RPO, what would you do differently?

Longer time to Sign Up would have been good - I know a few people who were away for the SUs so couldn't join in.

How do you think the judging process can be done better?

Include some kind of criticism. Writers need feedback more than a number. Even something like "Give one compliment and one thing you feel the writing could be improved on" would be great.

Would you have liked to confer with other judges, or did you think keeping your opinions unshared made the judging easier/more honest?

I think the judges should stay separate but I'd be ok with it not being anonymous judging, and having my name next to any scores/comments I gave.

If we have another RPO, how would you like judging to change or not to change?

Comments, more structured frame for voting. For instance if it is a Romance piece then judges should be reminded to look for that, rather than just marking the piece for its overall writing.

1. What was your first impression of the RPO's when they were announced?
I was quite ecstatic! I felt it was a brilliant idea by the guys who made it possible. It was my chance to get to know how Roleplay events actually work. It also gave me more experience of “give a situation and do it” type of roleplays. Honestly, they were fun. :D

2. What made you decide your events, decide to become a judge, or both?
It took me a few days to decide what events I wanted to partake in. It also depended on my schedule, since I was somewhat busy at the time. I went ahead and partook in two events, and with the extra time, I was able to judge two events.

3. How was your writing experience? Was it a breeze or did you feel rushed? Word count too short?
I struggled a bit with the Escape event, as I wasn’t quite clear on the scenario given. So I just went with the flow. The My First Catch event was a breeze. The concept was very simple, and was able to write it all in one sitting.

4. If we have another RPO, what kind of events would you like to see?
I believe the events we’ve seen here in this RPOs are sufficient in nature. However, maybe next year we can have a SU contest, on who creates the best SUs or the best characters.

5. How was your Olympic experience as a whole?
Do you mean the RPO’s or the Olympics in London? Loljk

My experience was excellent. It was amazing enough for me to demand a second RPOs for next year.

6. If we have another RPO, what would you do differently?
I’ll participate in more events. This year I participated in two, so maybe with more time then, I’ll add in an extra event.

Judges

1. How was your judging experience?
It was excellent, actually. I was told clearly on how the judging portion works, and I just went with it. :D

2. How do you think the judging process can be done better?
Not much really. Everything was just crystal clear.

3. Would you have liked to confer with other judges, or did you think keeping your opinions unshared made the judging easier/more honest?
but I love being that one judge

It would be best to keep my opinions, and scores to myself. Talking to other judges would just spoil everything tbh.

4. If we have another RPO, how would you like judging to change or not to change?
I think my judging role would just remain the same tbh.

1. It seemed like it would be awesome and really fun

2. The ones that sounded like the most interesting and the most fun

3. We were supposed to write? I thought it was supposed to be a ROLEPLAY? =/

4. I have no suggestions, just explain them a little more thoroughly please.

5. Not good because things weren't explained thoroughly

6. Nothing.

1. What was your first impression of the RPOs when they were announced?
I don't really know. I guess I thought it sounded cute. I'm not however generally interested in competitive roleplaying environments.

2. What stopped you from participating in this year's Roleplay Olympics?
Get ready for a familiar looking one liner. "You can't please everyone" comes to mind. I was disappointed to find out that the RPOs attempted to cater to all writers instead of just roleplayers. A good comparison would be trying to please Tabletop Gamers and Video Gamers by making a video game version of a tabletop game. It might please some people, but ultimately it's not what's best for either group because it ignores the fundamental differences between the two which can't simply be combined away. Somebody has to get the short end of the stick.

3. What did you think of the organization of the RPOs?
About as good as PC allows. Organization didn't appear to be an issue from what I could tell.

4. If we have another RPO, would you participate in some way?
Eh... Probably not, because I don't expect things to actually change very much. But hey, wouldn't be the first time I've been surprised.

5. What improvements, changes, or events would you like to see in another RPO? Would this change whether you joined or not?
Two seperate events, one catering to roleplayers and the other to traditional writers. This would involve a bunch of sub-changes to cater more directly to roleplayers, but I don't feel the need to cover all of those. This alone would make a big difference to me. It'd still be a maybe, because once against competitive environments aren't really within my personal taste... But it'd be an objective improvement that would significantly increase the chances of my participation by a large margin. I don't know about some of the others, but I am not a writer. You couldn't pay me to write books. I'm just not interested. So if it doesn't feel like roleplay, I'm not going to do it.

1. What was your first impression of the RPO's when they were announced?

"Hey, this looks fun." <== Exact thoughts.

2. What made you decide your events, decide to become a judge, or both?

I picked the ones that looked the most fun, but got lazy and only did a few of them. I became a judge because I was going to read them all anyway, so I might as well judge them too.

3. How was your writing experience? Was it a breeze or did you feel rushed? Word count too short?

It was mainly a breeze, but I do have insane amounts of time on my hands. Maybe for someone with a job or even harder schoolwork would have had trouble. The word count seemed fair, but it could have been a bit higher.

4. If we have another RPO, what kind of events would you like to see?

I would like more situational events, like rescue and escape. Rescue was easily my favorite category, and would love to see more events like that.

5. How was your Olympic experience as a whole?

It was fun, and I really went in being carefree. I didn't actually expect to win any medals, so I was mainly there for fun. And yes, it was.

6. If we have another RPO, what would you do differently?

Hmmm....perhaps have a better heads-up or sign up dates? A few people were away for the sign ups and missed it, so an extended sign up time would be better. Other than that, just have more fun events.

Judges

1. How was your judging experience?

It was great. I read every post anyway, so all I had to do was rate it.

2. How do you think the judging process can be done better?

Hmmm....have the judges look for specific content rather than overall quality. (I'm not really sire how to put it) Basically we shouldn't be judging romance the same way we judge parody or short story.

3. Would you have liked to confer with other judges, or did you think keeping your opinions unshared made the judging easier/more honest?

I would keep it unshared, so one judge cannot influence the others.

4. If we have another RPO, how would you like judging to change or not to change?

Honestly I like the way we judged this go-around. So if it stays the same, its good woth me.

1. What was your first impression of the RPO's when they were announced?

I thought it was a really cute idea!

2. What made you decide your events, decide to become a judge, or both?
I decided to be a judge since I wouldn't have enough time to be an actual participant. I don't think I would have entered as a participant anyway though, it's been far too long for me to be confident enough in my writing hahaaa...

Judges

1. How was your judging experience?
There's.... not much to say really, I read two or three posts and called it a day.

2. How do you think the judging process can be done better?
I thought it was fine, but being able to give commentary would've been nice, in my opinion.

3. Would you have liked to confer with other judges, or did you think keeping your opinions unshared made the judging easier/more honest?

I don't particularly see a merit/purpose in conferring with other judges.

4. If we have another RPO, how would you like judging to change or not to change?

I think other than being able to have commentary should the judge so choose to take the time to write it out, the judging system was fine.
