I think this goes here sorry if I'm wrong.

I was wondering if someone could explain Evs and Ivs in a bit more detail to me and tell me how to work them out properly. I have been considering doing some copetitive battles but figure I should learn all this in detail first.

IV or individual Values are inherited, every Pokemon you catch has a generated genetic precursor. There is nothing you can do to manipulate that precursor. Furthermore IV's that a Pokemon has are based on luck. I havn't played pokemon since D/P generation so I'm not sure if this still holds valid.
I did at one point get my hands on a Ditto with perfect IV's and I used that to breed the pokemons I wanted to compete with. In theory if you breed Pokemon with excellent IV's you could essentially get an egg whose IV are up-to-par.

There are few calculators out there that offer a means to determine your current pokemon's IV....
This is the one i use:
psypokes.com/dex/iv.php

EV training on the other hand is far more complex. I suggest you watch videos on youtube. Nothing beats kinesthetics that is a visual presentation.
